To celebrate the release of the new mobile game, Andre revisits, rewatches, and explains the first 5-part pilot premiere of the G.I. Joe animated series in 1983, subtitled The M.A.S.S. Device, which introduced G.I. Joe and Cobra to weekday afternoons for one week only before a sequel special The Rise of Cobra in 1984, the further adventures in 1985, and G.I. Joe The Movie in 1987.

Black Nerd Comedy hey Andre I loved gi joe. I had a lot of the action figures with the weapons that fire missiles and removable helmets ⛑. With the introduction of sgt slaughter (wwe hall of famer ) in the movie was amazing. I had so many figures but parents couldn’t afford the vehicles and my mom made bases out of cardboard boxes and it was amazing. Great review and I prob will download the game .
its kinda of important for a dude like you (733k subs) to talk about GI Joe, the Joes have to come back (movie/ cartoon/ toys) and we need all the help we can get ;) i know about the Snake Eyes movie and the rumors about a new toy line, but still...tubi doesn't have the REVENGE OF COBRA :( dont know why!?
I have all the episodes and movie on DVD! ^_^
You want another inconsistency? When Cover Girl is covering her mouth, there is are two Timbers! One with her the other in the Jeep. Pretty please watch more!
“ Don’t they know their dealing with...DESTRO ! “
I am continually impressed at the level of character and plot development in all of the old mid-eighties cartoons. Thundercats is very much like this too. There are so many intricate stories and details in even the minor plot lines and minor characters. He-man, Thudercats, GI Joe, Transformers...they all have educating storylines about how to treat people, ethics, morals, stuff kids need at a young age, and they do it in very adult ways that you don’t see in modern cartoons.
Yeah! It's why I love old 80's cartoon! They were the best!
Yup they treated us like we had some brains back then. While selling us toys. My favorite was Robotech.
Our society is so scared to say things that need to be said now of fear of offending someone. Its more hindering than helping.
You clearly have not seen modern cartoons like MLP, Steven Universe, and She-Ra. They also have educating storylines about how to treat people, ethics, morals, stuff kids need at a young age, and do it in very adult ways. Old mid 80's cartoons were products of their time abiding to what was socially acceptable back then that today is viewed as outdated/nonsensical/harmful. Those PSAs they had back in the those days were added in to appease moral guardians who fear of their kids getting influenced by violent cartoons.
Well part of it was a reaction to the success of the Star Wars toyline, which made toymakers realize that toy's attached to a storyline could sell much better than nameless generic toys. Which is where Marvel Comics came in, helping Hasbro come up with character names, character backstories, the existance of Cobra because badguy toys let kids play out battles with good guy's and bad guy's and more. Plus before the animated series, Hasbro was so gung ho about the storyline that before the toy specific commercials, they arranged for ads for the Marvel Comics as a workaround the standards saying "don't do that sort of things in ads for toys."
That intro to G.I.JOE the animated feature was so freaking incredible epic. " Crashing through the sky, comes a fearful cry.. Cobra!... Cobra! Cobra! Cobra! Armies of the night, evil taking flight, Cobra!.. Cobra! Cobra! Cobra! Nowhere to run, nowhere to hide, panic spreading far and wiiide who can turn the tide?... * shoots Major Bludd* GIJOE!! ". Hells yeah, that is an intro.
What Marlon Sanchez said!!
Listen to the commentary with the writer on the movie... apparently the studio added that whole into action sequence after the movie was made because they wanted a massive epic intro and the writer was SALTY AS HELL about it too *lol*
It’s forever an ear worm. And that is good
Cooobraaaaa (Cooo-braaaaa)
Destro and Cobra Commander are literally Starscream and Megatron 😂😂😂
Well you know Cobra Commander & Star Scream has the same voice actor in the cartoon series.
Bryant Williams yes I quite aware...I’m talking about the dynamics of their relationship as leader and second in command.
@@TheDreMacShow Gotcha....Well not really. Destro wasn't really trying to lead Cobra
Totally TRUE!
Bryant Williams on this first 5 episodes he technically is 🤷🏾♂️😂
Knowing is half the battle.
And now I know!
G.I. Joe!
Battle:
50% Knowing
25% Blue Lasers
25% Red Lasers
The other half is extreme violence.
And some hot women
Make it a series Andre!
Yes!! @Black Nerd Comedy Andre!! Turtles, He-Man, X-Men, My Little Ponies G1, OG Ducktales, Chip and Dale Rescue Rangers!! .. kay what else?? hmmmmmm
@@TheCommonGentry Well for sure he'll need to do Smurfs, and by extension the Snorks. It would be cool to see Darkwing Duck, Tiny Toons, Animaniacs, He-Man & She-Ra...surely there can be plenty more too
Thundercats! Hooooo
Yes. At least the first few specials. G.I. Joe is one of the old cartoons that holds up upon rewatch. I definitely can't say the same for Transformers or Thundercats, which I loved as a kid. Also, the G.I. Joe comics by Larry Hama are amazing
Yes maybe do the first episodes of a few series....Great job.
Andre getting excited about the baroness. 😂 😂 😂
Can't forget about the Transformers episode that has Cobra Commander.
Yes. I love this episode. He out live all of Cobra.
Only Human - Rodimus Prime is defeated by Cobra Commander
You should do a video like this for the 1987 teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles cartoon
GIJOE has been under the radar for far too long! Thanks for the video. Last year the 55th anniversary came and went with little fanfare. Please do a G1 Transformers video similar to this!
Mostly all the power rangers shows are on Netflix ‼️
Nothing beats the G.I. Joe animated movie intro.
_Cobra_
*_COBRA_*
The Rambo animated movie was also pretty cool.
Yes that intro song is so dope!!!
Yeah, that's a bitchin' intro.
Transformers
I agree completely. So much great over the top action. When it ends, you start to walk away until you remember "oh, that epic statue of liberty battle... was just the intro".
This is what I meant when I told you the OG play cousins missed your reviews on classic nostalgia stuff like this. This was amazing. Please do more GI Joe and other 80s cartoons.
Tough trying to do it all, but I think I’ve found the balance. Definitely plan on doing more. Stay tooned.
@@BlackNerdComedy and balance is half the battle! I appreciate you so much Andre.
I like how when people called them out for no one getting shot in a military show, Hasbro introduced battle android troopers so gi joe could actually shoot an enemy without killing someone.
They're worse than stormtrooper aim. Cobra Aim.
Make this a series? One word: YES!
Revisit The Littles! Thundercats! Silver hawks! Inhumanoids! Jem! He-Man and The Masters of the Universe! Jayce and the Wheeled Warriors!
You have great taste!
The littles were beast!!!!
@@BlackNerdComedy Thank you! Oh and I forgot to mention Galaxy High... I had such a crush on Amy, I thought she was a teenaged Lady J 😂
@@Kap00rwith2os No mention of Thundarr? *my boy's always forgot lol* ☹
@@WolfEatZombies Lords of Light! Nobody forgets Thundarr while I'm around. (also there's a documentary video called "Lords of Light - the Thundarr the Barbarian Story" somewhere on RUclips if you're interested.
Chris Latta passed away too young, we lost him too soon, since he passed away in 1994, he died before he could fully witness and experience the impact of the legacy he left behind and the full impact of the fandom, besides Cobra Commander, without question his next most iconic role is the original voice of Starscream, basically, those two characters are his two main most iconic voice roles.
It's not quite 4am...and you are makin' me so happy. I use RUclips to help me get through anxiety/depression, by breaking up bad mental spirals. Your videos work better than any other channel. Thank-you so much for being who you are. Glad I sub'd. Really wishin' I'd kept my giant-ass Cobra Army...I had so many figures/vehicles.
Andre: “I’m sure Cobra Mountain was a playset”
Joe Fandom: “If only...” 😭
It was with spy troops.
yeah if only,and cobra island.
You should do this as a series where you review the first episodes of 80's and 90's kids shows. Love your content!
Edit: I would love to see you do this for the original transformers and tmnt mini-series.
I would watch all of them!
I would watch this as well. Love watching old 80s cartoons I grew up with! Love to see more videos like this.
I love this idea!
That is a great idea! I'd absolutely watch that.
"They kidnapped the Eiffel Tower"
I totally forgot Carmen Sandiego was a member of Cobra.
She is the Baroness' sister
@@Rodshark75 ...That is my new headcanon now thank you for that.
LOL
Rodshark75 Well in the new series it feels like they’re hinting that she’s literally related to Laura Cruz’!
I love your review of the first 5 episodes of GI Joe! I'm 46 and I remember watching them and wondering why the heck they keep shooting and hitting absolutely nothing. I even remember Duke's jet getting blown up and out of this massive fireball came a parachute and Duke without a scratch on him! Anyway, I would LOVE to see more of this type of review. Starblazers, Robotech, Thundercats, Transformers, Captain Harlock and the Queen of 1000 years, Jayce and the Wheeled Warriors, Battle of the Planets, He-Man, She-Ra, and Silverhawks just to name a few possible future reviews. Would absolutely LOVE to see it!
They totally missed an opportunity when they didn't name the Cobra robots "Cobrots".......
I hope this becomes a regular series here! Love your retro content.
Great recap brought back so many memories. Scarlett was my girl back then but the Baroness was a close second
don't sleep on lady J
I always love your energy when you talk about these nostalgic things, especially when you get enjoyment out of what you're doing a video on. I'd love to see you continue this concept, and a lot of people before me have listed some good/great ideas.
For me, since I didn't see anyone else bring it up-It'd be a lot of fun and hilarity if you ever chose to do something like this for the OG My Little Pony animated series. That first movie (the one with Firefly and the seaponies, and those...dark dragon-like steeds? It's been a while since I watched it XD) still holds pretty decently, but trying to go back and watch the other MLP stuff that came after it...I'm certain you'd have a blast with it.
I'd also love to see your take on more obscure 80s stuff, like Popples, Pound Puppies, Moon Dreamers, Glow Friends (?), Snorks, Teddy Ruxpin, Potatohead Kids, Snorks, etc. The list could go on.
"You fooools!"
As a former fourteen-year-old devotee of the GI Joe cartoon (and all the rest of the mid-80's toy-plugging lineup) I absolutely loved every moment of this recap. More please!
Between this, Cats, Dr. Doolittle..... I LOVE this "I have to explain" type format! Please keep up these thought torrents, these opinion and observation overtures.... they are great.
This reminds me of how they introduced Thundercats (first two episodes), She-Ra (first 5 episodes = Secret of the Sword movie, which can be found on youtube *hint hint*), and Gargoyles (first five episodes).
“You can’t hit duke!” should be a catchphrase.
Also, people actually get killed in the first 5 part series. ...I know, right?
7:00 c’mon, Andre! You’re _also_ a STAR TREK nerd, so you should know that extraterrestrial crystals (dilithium), plus “heavy water” (which is actually something necessary to create nuclear fission) and meteorite (unobtainium/ extraterrestrial coal) = transporters.
16:00 you’re not going to bring up how Cobra has a frikkin Helicarrier?
19:00 you’re not going to talk about Conan grabbing a motorcycle with a side car, moving at full speed, and _shotputting it over a cliff?!_ _WITH THE COBRA SOLDIERS STILL ON IT?!_
I grew up coming home from school and watching GI Joe and Transformers. Best times ever!
I remember when Community did a G.I. Joe episode I loved that episode. How they did all the meta references to the series about how no one ever gets hit, the messed up lip sync they do when they have the wrong voices for another character when it's the voice of the other character sometimes, and all the flaws of 80s cartoons, I miss Community so much!!
@Luc Collin if I'ma be honest that's what I'm watching now cause only Community can make me laugh after hearing about the death of Kobe Bryant
This would be a fun series Andre. I vote yes to that.
Yes, I would love to see you do more of these! By the time you've watched the entire series Andre, maybe they'll make a new GI Joe cartoon and cast you as Cobra Commander.. cause... you nail that voice for Cobra Commander... it is spot on!
This is so crazy, I just started a rewatch of the series the other day. I remember growing up with the series fondly and still love it. G.I. Joe is like The A Team. Filled to the brim with fistfights, massive gun battles and vehicle battles. Topped off with interesting and distinct characters. But in the end no one really gets killed or seriously hurt. Fun fact: to the best of my recollection there's only two instances of someone getting shot. Bazooka in a series episode and Duke in the movie. The comic was a different story though, people were getting taken out in that ruthlessly on the regular.
Thank you for the review, Andre! This really made my day. I own all of the Family Home Entertainment Big Box VHS tapes from the 80s.
YES! I saw the post on IG and I couldn't wait for this video. Love Andre Explains!
I never watched GI Joe as a kid, so I don't have any emotional connection to them - but watching you rundown these episodes was hilarious and wonderful and it got me all pumped and excited for how diverse and badass these characters are. Please do more!
Dude. Its funny your watching those! I just restarted watching this series about a week ago. Im on episode 17! Cool man.
I remember this show as a kid and I loved it. Me and my brothers watched it a lot.
I would love to see you talk about the Teddy Ruxpin cartoon. 💜
I busted out laughing when the plot went weird, you'd look into the camera and shout: "Go Joe!" I expected the chirping crickets. Your voiceover work is SPOT on! Especially, the commercial.
G.I. Joe is still shown at 5 am on one of the Discorery Channels, so they know it is a good cartoon. Adults, teens and kids can watch it and enjoy it, especially friends and family.
The show is exactly the standard of story telling, characterization, and plotting we need in some cartoons now. Nobody has to copy the story telling technique, but you can take notes.
Now we need a cartoon studio that doesn't hire bad writers to do Bravestarr, C.O.P.S, and I don't know some well done cartoon that had a good premise that was never finished.
The original G.I. Joe himself eventually appeared in this series. At least in the comics, I think. He was given the full name "Joe Colton" (Best name ever, by the way) and had become a general since his heyday back in the 60's. He also got a new 3 3/4 inch figure in 1994 with a big ass M60 as his weapon!
Joseph Colton was in the live action feature film, GI JOE Retaliation, played by Bruce Willis.
General Joseph R. Colton codename G.I.JOE
I love this show. The background music and the movie theme song. Squeeeeee
These were the best episodes of the series IMO (I also loved the wiper(viper) episode when I was younger). Thanks for doing this review Andre!!! Pure greatness!!
I really loved the show when I was a kid, the Sci Fi and Fantasy elements and whitty one-liners really made it all a fun time!
I always had a thing for Lady Jaye...
She was fine as hell!
I'm still lookin for her...where is she? Lol
Ok. You asked for it. Watch the first 5 episodes of the care bears.
I'd love to see your reaction to that
Andre in between kept singing "GI Joe" and he busted out with The More You Know. 😂
I know this was just an ad for a game, but I still enjoyed the walk down memory lane. GI Joe was a staple in my after school TV watching, and the toys were the main things I played with for years. Maybe the cartoon was cheesy, but I think it was overall a good influence on kids like me with its stories of good vs evil.
Rewatching GI Joe, I realized a lot of stuff went over my head as a kid. Pretty trippy stuff.
This five parter was good, but the next one with the Weather Dominator was even better! Also, my inner child giggles whenever Destro says "My DEAR Cobra Commander".
I disagree. I never thought the ensuing shows were as good as the first miniseries. Sure, the weather dominator was fun, but it was goofier. Plus, it was basically a copy of the the first miniseries...gotta track down three elements, er I mean parts, to win the battle. Zartan was cool, though. The next miniseries, Pyramid of Darkness, was lame, another three battles template, which set the tone for the terrible regular series.
Please make this a series. I loved all of this. As another show suggestion, try the defenders of the earth. It's from 1986, has characters of flash gordon, ming the merciless, and the phantom. All of the episodes are currently on prime video.
For some reason I like the tv theme song more than the movie theme. Guess everyone else feels differently.
Nick Brennen I agree
At first I thought Andre was trying to get waves when I saw the thumbnail!😂
Ha ha ha! Nah, not on this bumpy head 🤣 I was wearing a hat in one of the shots, but I liked the expression.
@@BlackNerdComedy You should get corn braids or box braids, that would be dope.
15:53 holy shit is this where SpaceX got the idea to catch their fairings with giant nets??
Awesome breakdown of this legendary cartoon...
That's why this was my favorite cartoon as a kid.
My favorite episodes were "The Pyramid of Darkness" series, and the messed up 2-part Shipwreck episode "There's No Place Like Springfield".
Of all the episodes, you should definitely make a video about that one.
I'm all for it keep on going I gotta know how the other episodes are cause just these five alone was nuts!!
Great video. I would love to see more reviews on G.I. Joe cartoons. I would love to see "Thunder! Thunder! Thundercats ho!" Sorry, had to do it.
Me and my brother used to love these 5 episodes of GI Joe. We made fun of Cobra commander's voice endlessly. "Dessssssolation....ruin.....chaossssssss.......Bwahahahaha!!!!" And the squabbling between CC and Destro: "You loudmouth serpent of a dolt!" Endless quotables, even from minor characters, like the big, vaguely First Nation design guy from the "arena of sport" who growled, "We will be ready!" while crushing his drinking cup. Thanks for covering this material. It came out when I was around 13 or 14. I was into 6 animated features at the time: GI JOE, Charlotte's Web, Animal Farm, Watership Down, The Secret of NIMH, and Bambi. I was an eccentric kid.
I grew up with these as a teen of the 80s and just bought the first season on dvd, and then discovered you did this video on youtube, friggin love it!!!
The cobra castle wasnt a playset but god i wish it was.. We got the terrordrome instead but thankfully that was just as epic
Ok Andre. I forgive you for lying on Twitter and never giving us the review for final Armageddon episodes of TMNT. This was awesome
I can't help but feel Andre did this to purge Cats from his mind. But hey! Love this thang!
I know this was sponsored, but I’d love more 80’s cartoon reviews. G.I. Joe or otherwise.
There will be both sponsored and non-sponsored ones ha ha! Just might have sponsors so that I don't have to worry about claims from RUclips.
Larry Hama's run in the Marvel comics, particularly the Special Missions line, puts the cartoon to shame, IMO. Read Special Missions #2. You'll spend the bulk of it with your hand over your mouth like "holy crap I can't believe they went there"
Oh yeah, the cartoons had restrictions obviously, but the comics... they went there...
Well, the comic book was amazing and aimed at older kids and even adults. The cartoon was pure kids fare.
Keep doing them! Took me back to when played all day with my friend and going to toys R Us. To get the newest figure or replace the one that broke in half lol. Thanks for the memories
this animation looks better than Berserk 2017....
Cobra!!! I want to see a retrospective on Thundercats!
Imagine if Capcom made a Marvel Super Heroes 2 and had GI Joe as bonus characters
I’d happily watch this series of videos
Snake Eyes is a Mandalorian foundling, change my mind.
Also Andre please revisit Pirates of Dark Water, that was my jam back in the day😁
I don’t care how many times she backstabs, I love The Baroness. I haven’t seen this in decades. Thanks for this.
Snake Eyes had that blue outfit in the first issue of Transformers vs. G.I. Joe by Tom Scioli.
I really enjoyed watching your joy as you have your review! 😁
Oh the fun don't stop here, the 80's were a boon of awesomeness. If you want more fun might I recommend the first 5-Episodes of Transformers "More Than Meets The Eye", the multi-part pilot for She-Ra, "He-Man & She-Ra: Secret of the Sword", the Thundercats 5-Part Season 2 Episode "Mumm-Ra Lives", and in case you forgot what happens in that episode...well I don't wanna ruin the surprise. If after all that action you need a change of pace, there's always the 5-Part "Rescue Rangers To The Rescue" (the origin of Chip & Dales Rescue Rangers), the 2-Part Darkwing Duck episode "It's Just Us, Justice Ducks", or the 5 Ducktales episodes that comprise the series opener "Don't Give Up The Ship", "Wronguay in Ronguay", "Three Ducks of the Condor", "Cold Duck", & "Too Much of a Gold Thing". Maybe by this point what you could be in the mood for is some Soul, and if you can't find an episode of Hammer Man, the MC Hammer is a superhero with talking shoes series (bet you forgot that was a thing, LOL) I loved that show, there's always A Pup Named Scooby Doo, Denver the Last Dinosaur, or if you want some feels to go with your Soul, the Alvin & The Chipmunks special "A Chipmunk Reunion" has you covered. Plus if nothing else there's the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 5-Part Episode series opener "Turtle Tracks", "Enter The Shredder", "A Thing About Rats", "Hot Rodding Teenagers From Dimension X", and "Shredder & Splintered". This video was great. It was a lot of fun to relive some mutual memories of fun from back in the day, and I would love to see some more of these types of vids. P.S. The Real Ghostbusters episode "Slimer Come Home" (that's my favorite episode by the way), Tale Spin's series opener the 4-Part "Plunder & Lightning", and the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers Season 2, 3-Part Episode "The Mutiny" you might also enjoy. 😉❤✔💯😍
Andre this Video is Dope, I love the commercial break!!!! Great Job bro
If they ever rebooted the cartoon, you should definitely audition for the voice of Cobra Commander. Loved it, and am now thinking about calling in sick so I can re-watch said episodes.
Aww thanks! COOOOOBRA!
His imitation of Cobra Commander makes me wonder if CC and Skeletor were voiced by the same actor
@@ARBoham Thanks for the info. It's just that when Andre does the Cobra Commander, he sounds like Skeletor to me. I never watched G.I. Joe, but I did watch He-Man. I've also seen one of Andre's cartoon voice challenges. He's pretty good.
Love your energy and enthusiasm! I watched these as a kid in the 80's, played (not collected) the toys. Oh why did I throw away the boxes? Lol! Keep up the great videos!
Love G.I. Joe! Watched it all the time when I was a kid! I've got Tubi TV, so I'm gonna watch it again. Thanks, Andre! Loved your 80's style commercial btw!
Snake Eyes sacrificing himself in the radioactive chamber has to be a Star Trek 2 callback to (spoiler alert ) Spock dying, right??
It’s actually pretty interesting that a kids cartoon that was made to sell toys would consider that governments can’t just surrender.
This was awesome! I hope you do more of them too. Thundercats and Ninja Turtles episode reviews would be great too
The comic book fleshed out Snake-Eyes much better. His face was scarred due to being severely wounded in Vietnam. That's why he wears the mask. And he took a vow of silence after the ninja master that trained him was killed. That's why he doesn't speak.
This was so Awesome, yes you need to do more G.I. Joe cartoon reviews...keep up the great work 👍
I'm a baby boomer than loves all cartoons (old & new) to death. The G I Joe shows from way back when are so entertaining. I never tire of watching the reruns daily in the AM hrs on Discovery Family Channel. Thanks Black Nerd!
As far as 80’s toys and action figures go, there was no better toy line than GI JOE. The vehicles, the action figures, the bases.... nothing beats it.
I would absolutely love to see you do more videos like these! Revenge of Cobra and G.I. Joe The Movie would be epic, but also the first 5 episodes of the original TMNT were so top notch! I think that pretty much any cartoon that has that initial 5-in-a-row set up would go really well with your style of reviews. Thanks for what you do!
Renamed Action Force here in the UK, my favourite episode was Sink the Montana. I loved Shipwreck.
This was an extremely fun watch, Andre! I know very little about G.I. Joe (wasn't ever a franchise I had much interest in), so having you lay out essentially an entire generation's introduction to it in your very "you" style was a really enjoyable way to experience it without putting all the time into watching it. I'd love you to do more animation videos like this! (I'd personally be really excited to see you cover the various TMNT knock-off shows from back in the day like Street Sharks and Biker Mice and Mighty Ducks. Maybe you could even do a little ranking at the end to show which one you liked best of them!)
Your Cobra Commander and Destro impressions have earned you a sub!
Yo! Joe!
not only do I have a new found respect for this show since it is more complex than I thought it was but I also am impressed with these first 5 episodes cause they really feel like their own cool self contained story almost like a movie not episodic at all like I remember also yes you should do this more it was extremely delightful for both you and us please do more
Do also Transformers G1 , Beast Wars .
Bruce Robinson Theme composed by Ford Kinder and Spencer Michelin. Music composed by John Douglas!
I would love to see more of these kinds of videos where you re-watch a cartoon and explain it
Powerhouse Animation should do a GI JOE: Revelations or something. I feel like a Marvel Civil War is ready to happen between Cobra. Deathstro didn't earn the right to wear that Cobra uniform.
Brilliant! Do it, do it, do it! Make it a series bro! Excellent breakdown. Dang funny too! Love your G.I.Joe battle cry with fist pump. Great Cobra Commander voice too. Do ALL the Joe series up to the movie!!!!! I'm serious. We'll be expecting it!
12:21 but OF COURSE they gave her the jiggly bounce
