  • More action with the Squad Scout M1A in 7.62X51. Yes, I sent a check back instead of the rifle. Thought this would be a nice rifle to post on Memorial Day weekend.

    I have no idea why so many people nit pick the M1 so much and to such an extent. Springfield: has a proven track record. I have fought in Afghanistan and Iraq(OIF and OEF Army combat veteran3/3 Armored Calvalry Regiment/Brave Rifles). I must admit I have shot many many different calibers-- and I'm not just talking Basic/TRADOC training. That Scout Squad M1A is an entirely different beast. Don't knock it before you've shot it. Keep going Hickock!!!!!💯💪💯💪💯💪💯💪💯💪💯💪💯💪💯💪💯💪💯

      Veteran here (2/2 Marine), I think it's hard to knock the M1A, when it's still in service today to marksmen to make up for the shortfalls of the 5.56 in ranged encounters and penetration. Not only that, but its robust, and has no cheap plastic.

    So glad to hear you kept the Squad Scout M1A! Sounded like you were heading that way. The original M-14 I had in the Army, 1964-68, was the sweetest battle rifle. In some way it "felt" better than the M-1. I agree that the sights are pretty much identical and are great. In one op I had the full-auto M-14 and it handled, recoiled just as mild as a single round, didn't rise too much - you could lay them in at 500 yds just like an M-60, but for the 20-round limitation and the reloading, etc.. RPM seemed about the same but I wasn't counting. Taking off the safety? Just grasp with your right thumb and forefinger instead of pushing from inside with the trigger finger, that way you can do it quietly without the click. As you suggested, everyone please get to shoot this fine piece someday, just to appreciate it.Thanks!

    In 1967 I was issued an M14A1 to train with and went all thru Infantry training using the M14A1. Upon reporting to my T.O.& E unit I was issued the M-16. I honestly thought the Military was wanting to kill me. And one never forgets their first love. Totally wish I could own one. However, the M-16 has certainly proven itself over the years and I so own an AR. Thank you very much for sharing this video on the M1A.

      PabloMontoya You're very welcome, Pablo. Unfortunately, The M-14 was designed and built with a selector switch giving it the capability of automatic fire. Since the ATF considers this an automatic weapon, chances are slim to none that I'll never be united. I've resigned to this fact and never gave more thought. I do however get excited when I see or able to fire an M-1 Garand or this M1A.

    Have this exact same rifle including the G.I. Sling. Love it. Rapid fire will stand you up with 3 or more rapid fire. This would definitely be my SHTF rifle if I could only chose one. Shot the Garand and the M14 in the Army although issued the M16 in 1970. Something about the M1A though to me is what I would chose to carry and shoot. Hickock your an answer to all us shooters and see the different arms and formats we may have not thought of. Excellent Job as always.

    Yes, firing the M-1A is addictive! I've got a nice Super Match that will put rounds in the X circle all day at 600 yards. I've never been able to shoot National Match competition at longer distances, but pretty sure the rifle would do the same at 1000 yards! Wearing the shooting coat and getting strapped into the sling and putting rounds on target shot after shot after shot is a heady feeling. The bucking recoil is not oppressive due to the gas operation, but you will know that you've been in a competition by day's end! The feel, the look, the sound, all contribute to fulfilling my desire to own and shoot a M-14 since watching "Combat!" as a child. Oh, I guess the rifles in that TV series were the Garand and BAR, among others. I guess it was the soldiers in early days of the Vietnam War that I saw firing the M-14. And perhaps our family's encyclopedia set had a photo pictorial of the M-14. Anyway, I had the chance to get a M-1A in the early '80s, and have loved it ever since.

    The M1 Garand needs a proper video in 1080p 60 fps. Most of the Garand footage on this channel is from 2009/10 when you guys still filmed with a SD Camera. The M1 Carbine could need a chapter 2 as well.
    This is the greatest firearm channel on youtube and those rifles deserve the highest Hickok quality, in my opinion. :)

    I went through Basic with a M-14. I went through Airborne AIT with a M-16 rifle. When I got to Viet Nam I was issued a M-16 rifle until I got to weasel my way into Sniper School. After completing Sniper School I was issued a XM-21. Of all the firearms that I have ever shot, that XM-21 still has my heart even all these years later on. Nothing will ever take the place of that rifle.

    This was always my choice for an apocalypse gun, if I had a bunch of money 😅. The scout version seems like a perfect compromise between weight and power/range. I would get a synthetic stock as I assume that would make it a bit lighter.
    Hickok45 is the best. I wish he was one of my uncles 😂. Also big props to the cameraman (I forget his name... Jesse?) for always being completely silent. I am sure he has plenty to add on videos but he is very smart for being quiet. It makes the video a lot more personal to the viewer. I hope you two live forever. Much love.

    It's impressive to maintain accuracy unsupported with a heavy rifle for as long as you were holding it. A big issue with alot of my shooters is that they try to hard and they take to long so they end up swaying and forcing a shot. Well done

    It is a rifle that makes you feel like history is being made in a classic design. A Garand reeks of history the minute you touch it. This one echoes that feeling just seeing it in place. Glad to see training and education as part of the sponsors for the channel. A classy video at every level showing the concentration effort at that distance with a target that small.

    In the early '70's Pop bought a full size Spfld Arm M1A from a Catholic Priest,,, for $300.oo ( a decommissioned M-14, chrome lined chamber) We shot it a few times at a proper range, I was still in Jr High, so I mostly shot my M1 carbine.
    The first time I took it out myself was '83-'84. Fresh out of High School I didn't really have a clue,, so I stuff a mag and some 5 rnd stripper clips in my pockets, sling it over my shoulder, jump on my 3 wheeler and meet a buddy down at the river so I could teach him how to load/fire a muzzle loader. A cap lock pistol Santa had given him a few weeks before. We didn't hit anything with it, but he learned safe loading/firing procedure.
    About the time we finished the lesson, 2 hippies walk up. One tells me, ''Yer 'ol Arrmeeee gun ain't werth a fuuuu----c'' Aggravated by this fool, I backed up quite a bit, then cycled the action on the vintage GI Hardball,(LC '57) and shot the 10'' willow tree the small target was stapled too.
    At 50-60 yrds I didn't see the impact on the Z but I could clearly see the rounds splashing into the river another 30-40 yrds further downrange. I'm like you,, what a rush!! After the first 3-5 rnds I adjusted myself for the rather stiff recoil and quickly ran the 20 round mag dry. As I started down range, everyone followed commenting on the loud report.( I never forgot ear plugs again, that's for sure)
    Hippie's laughin', tellin me,''You can't even hit that tree, boyeeee'' As we reached the tree I'm wondering if I had indeed missed. No, I see a decent group a little high/left.
    It wasn't till I looked at the back of the willow that I realized what had happened. Every round passed effortlessly through the tree and continued downrange into the river with little if any deflection, the 20 rounds of 150 grn FMJ's taking very large chunks of wood upon exiting. The hole was the diameter of a cantaloupe and 2-3 inches deep in the center.
    A few other people had begun to gather down range after hearing the unmistakable sound of a true Battle Rifle being fired. Everyone, especially hippie,, was shocked at the power of this '''Ole armeee gun''. I'll never forget the look on their dumbstruck faces,, priceless. I get the same rush each time I shoot it. But then,, you know the feeling.
    I get home, Pop asked me,''Well, how'ed you like it?'' I told him what had happened,, we laughed till it hurt. Then he looks at me seriously,,''What about the brass?''
    ''Yea Pop,, I recovered all the spent casings'' I told him, as I rattled them in my BDU pocket.

      +Franco Tramble Cool story :) 7.62x51/308 is a fantastic round.. My absolute favorite rifle cartridge. It's no 50bmg, but it gets the job done, and is hell of a lot of fun to shoot. Admittedly, I don't own a Springfield M1A variant yet.. I have a KelTec RFB that I've put about 600-800 trouble-free rounds through. Awesome gun to shoot, and being a 308, everyone comes over to see what I am shooting at the indoor range.. It's loud! But everytime I see Mr. Hickok doing a video on a Springfield rifle, I get more and more of an urge to buy one.. Classic guns, and great shooters no matter which version you buy :) They've had several M1A Socoms at my local FFL over the years.. They just feel great in my hands. I will have one in my collection someday!

      Franco Tramble Awesome story!!! I went to the range with some friends, not hippies, lol. But they had never seen or heard of an M1A. They're new to shooting, and of course all had AR's. They wanted to shoot my SIG MCX with a binary trigger (fires when pull trigger, fires when release trigger), thought that was the best!! But.... then someone asked what was in the big rifle case.... it was my M1A, one guy joked, "dude, Vietnam called...." lol. It was BY FAR their favorite gun at the end of the session!!! There was about 8 of us, thing got so dirty from all the shooting it started to cycle slowly, like, bang, sssssshhhhhh cçcclunk, next round, haha, never stopped though. Now it's all suped up and suppressed. By far my favorite rifle!!!
      Mostly because I get to hear cool stories like yours from the older guys. Be safe and keep up the good tree shootin'!

The 308 isnt the most powerful round you can get but it is a cost effective hard to beat accurate and simple platform that consistantly delivers rock solid performance.

      DanNantz Thanks. Believe it or not, we do think before we act on anything. While there will always be a sorehead, jealous, troll factor out there quick to be grandstand in a negative way, we think long and hard about our mission and about our viewers before we take any new steps. We will not allow anything to interfere with our actual content and unbiased approach. We pass on financial opportunities regularly, but if something makes sense to us and does not affect our content, we'll at least give it consideration.

      hickok45 Yeah, I was a bit nonplussed when the add came on at the end, but on second thought, it isn't really obtrusive, since it isn't at the beginning or in the middle (like youtube does). And SDI does seem like a pretty unique and good institution, so I'm glad you're being selective in your sponsors. Keep up the good work!

    Used the M-14 everyday in the U.S. Army Honor Guard (The Old Guard). We used it for firing parties. So I got to fire it a lot and take it apart and clean it a lot. But is was always blanks. I wish I could shoot it with live rounds.
    One thing I can say is it is reliable. Even shooting blanks this thing just kept working and working.

    Agree with you on the Iron Sights. Except for very long range shooting, those iron sights will take care of the target. In basic training I was reaching out to targets with iron sights on my M-14 that I couldn't believe I could even hit at first inspection. One GREAT weapon.

    The first gun I ever shot in my life was the M-14 rifle at Fort Gordon GA. in 1967. Heavy but accurate. The peep hole or rear sight has three different positions for the front sight. Low for close, middle for 75meters and full cover for extended range. In VietNam we had the rifle for about five months and were replace with the M-16 much lighter also very accurate. In hindsight The M-16 was more appropriate for the jungle.

    • @jmi0112
      @jmi0112 6 лет назад

      I think it depends on the mission too. I think once they started lining the barrels and regulary cleaning them the M-16 was perfect for the infantry. Had buddies in Nam who carried different stuff. A couple of Recon guys that carried M-1/30s carbines in the field and a couple of Scout Snipers that used M-14s. I think most of them trained with M-14s in boot camp.

    Hunter100t, actually, I can and have. Last month I had a late 1950's Crossman M-100 come in that wouldn't hold a charge, CO2 cartridge just leaked as soon as the trigger was pulled. I thought a gun is a gun, triger, striker, barell, sights etc. it should be fun. Again, design, function, and repair. Took a while, but I figured out disassembly, recognized the problems, researched parts suppliers, ordered them, replaced them and discovered why a particular seal would leak. A few minutes with a file and we were good. Reblued it, oiled and sighted her in and she shot well. Thanks for the vote of confidence, this is all I've ever wanted to do, from age 6 to 60, and I'm never tired of it, never!

    I have the Burris 2x7 pistol scope on my Scout Squad and love it. The only rifle I have owned with open sights I could shoot well .Was a light weight SKS Para-trooper. But I am 60 and had a motorcycle injury that has left my left shoulder a bit weak. So generally speaking I need a shooting stick to steady my aim. I have to say with the Burris scope I can shoot easily at 400 yards. Great Rifle very well made & designed.

    I am going to buy this same gun very soon here in Connecticut which is funny due to the fact that this gun is still legal with 10 round mags but the much weaker AR platform is outlawed here. It shows you how stupid the laws that were passed in 2013. I cannot but an AR with 5.56 but can buy a semiauto M1A chambered in .308 which will pass through a house. I would not be thinking of buying this gun but it is only a matter of time this gun is outlawed so I am not taking that chance. BTW Hickok I love my Sig 226 TACOPS that I bought due to your videos.

    Great rifle & video! A Good Iron muzzle brake from Smith Enterprise, and a tuned trigger will enhance the experience. If you want to use a forward mounted optic, replace the factory barrel mount with the M8 from UltiMAK, or the lighter, cooler running Scout Hand Guard (SHG) imported from Canada. Both allow you to position the optic as low as possible, and the iron sights will co-witness through a Micro H-1/T-1 or similar RDS... you should not need to a add a cheek riser either. Another option for iron sight shooters, replace the barrel mount & hand guard with cut-out with a standard hand guard, this will reduce weight, and give it that clean BUSH M1A appearance. -H2O

      clamum Not for me. I don't know about you, but when I am looking at something in person with my eyes, it does not look jerky like that.. It looks smooth. As I said, I love the quality of the picture, just not how things seem to "whip" back and forth. Reminds me a little of films from the early 1900's, where the action appeared to be sped up due to the film technology of the time.
      I like the new frame rate on things like video game playthroughs, etc., where it seems to improve the quality of the animation. But not for videos that depict real things, like Hickok walking around his compound.

    • @crazyfvck
      @crazyfvck 9 лет назад

      ***** Internet is fine. I have faster internet than most people watching these videos. It's just the frame rate, possibly combined with Johns movements as he uses the cam to film his dad. I just wish the 1080 option was offered without the new frame rate, for those that don't want to watch that version.

    • @crazyfvck
      @crazyfvck 9 лет назад

      I don't care about frame rate. I care about having a realistic image. "Advances" in technology are useless if they do not offer some sort of benefit over what they are replacing. 1080p was fantastic. I just don't see what everyone loves about the new frame rate, especially since it looks less realistic to me. But to each their own.

    For sportsman's sake and for the historical aspect, I prefer guns with wooden stocks and grips to polymer and fiber. Maybe from a practical standpoint, plastics are better, but I just don't see classic rifles without thinking of a rugged walnut stock. I like my guns to have weight to them anyway, so that extra pound or more doesn't bother me none.
