I was wrong on the military MOA requirements. It was 4 MOA when these were developed which is consistent with the rifles I’ve shot, most of which are on average around 3 MOA with decent ammo.
I did some load development with hornady 168 bthp match bullets and get right around 1 moa. Granted, same effort with a decent ar-10 and I would likely have sub moa, but better than 3-4 moa is absolutely achievable.
I personally don't see the safety as being a con; I see it as a pro. Your safety shouldn't be off unless you're going to fire, so having it in the trigger guard is both convenient and logical.
It’s not too bad, I think it comes down to training. I run several platforms and most have the safety in the same place the AR does, so for me it’s an annoyance. If I stuck with the M1a and mini 14 I’d probably appreciate it more.
CMI, Check-Mate Industries is the manufacturer of Springfield’s mags. 20 rounders are $35 I stay clear of their new 25 round mags. These are outstanding rifles. I’ve a Scout Squad with walnut sitting in a Delta 14 Gen 2 chassis with USMC Muzzle Brake. Just irons and is a Mean Machine. Also a Standard in Walnut presently sitting in a black synthetic SA stock. These rifles, especially broken down, remind me of a steam locomotive.
It was the least reliable US military service rifle according the US government's testing. "The M14 was having major problems even before ARPA’s Project AGILE and a Defense comptroller reported the AR15 superior to the M14. The famous Hitch Report stating the AR15, the M1, and the AK47 superior." "The study indicates that the AR15 is decidedly superior in many of the factors considered. In none of them is the M14 superior. The report, therefore, concludes that in combat the AR15 is the superior weapon. Furthermore, the available cost data indicate that is also a cheaper weapon. - ARPA" "Although analyzed less thoroughly, the M14 also appears somewhat inferior to the M1 rifle of WW2 and decidedly inferior to the Soviet combat rifle. the AK47. - Hitch Report"
I’ll take the M14/M1A1 over most other rifles including the scout version. The more you add to it the more that can go wrong. I don’t care about scopes and optics for a battle rifle. I spent 21 years in the Army without optics on my rifle. That doesn’t mean I wouldn’t mount one. I probably go with the low power scout scope for the scout rifle. And if I could afford it I would want a match rifle for a full sized one with a good scope like the ones the Army used on the M21 version. The weight isn’t a big deal I used to carry an M203 on the old M16A1. Nor is the ammo a problem, yes, it’s heavy and you carry less. But it can shoot through tree trunks that the 5.56 mm can’t. If you’re on a recon and make contact you’re already in trouble. You shoot and move to break contact and get out of the AO. You should have more than enough ammo to do that. Also fire discipline and the inherent accuracy of the rifle gives you an edge over your opponent. I’ll take that weapon over the AR platform any day.
I run some magazines with me got 4 on my chest 8 on my lbe and a drum in the gun. I also have 10 extra mags in my back pack Now I cut everything else in half from my tooth brush to my backpack
Was issued an OG M-14. The difference between that and the AR-15 / M-4 is 5.56 puts holes in targets and 7.62x51 takes chunks out of targets. If you know, you know.

I have a SOCOM 16 tanker that is lights out at 400-500 yards with iron sights. These Scout Squads were always better balanced, even with the extra 2" on the barrel. Their thinner (standard) front sight post makes them easier to use at longer ranges than the SOCOM 16" variant. The Scout is a great DMR/force multiplier or even general purpose 308 MBR. Something like a Trijicon MRO is a good option. It robs you of your ability to really utilize the .308 cartridge's range but the Scout Squad is really more of a general purpose variant. Most people aren't taking anything longer than 700 yard shots anyways, especially in any kind of real-world circumstances. What you lose in barrel length/range, you make up for in mobility and ballistics/muzzle velocity with that 18" barrel. Plus, the penetrative nature of .308 makes it better than an AR-15 DMR variant. The weight of ammo and capacity of rounds is a drawback but these are not spray-and-pray guns. In short, for a general purpose rifle, it truly is tough to beat the M1A Scout Squad. It's not a race car; it's not a minivan; it's an SUV. And the 1:11 twist rate has it beating other MBRs like the FAL in accuracy (and I say that as a lover of FALs).
I totally agree, it’s a good do all rifle, not the best at anything, but pretty good none the less. I personally prefer the FAL or G3 pattern, but there is something about the M1A that words can’t describe, it’s just a fun shooter that’s reliable. If I needed a 308 it’d be the one for me despite the shortcomings it has.
@@redbarronreviews2429 absolutely. I love my FALs and am partial to them, but there is something nostalgic and Americana about the M1A that will never go away.
Get lost. Your video pooped all over this rifle. You had almost nothing good to say about it and now you're saying that you'd take it if you needed a 308? F- off. Its a fabulous jack of all trades rifle but you said nothing about this in your video. 95 percent of your video was crazy negatives.@@redbarronreviews2429
Great honest review. I have a scout squad that I bought used for $1250. It’s a beautiful gun but yes it’s heavy. In terms of magazines, I just bought some Checkmate magazines for it that were relatively inexpensive at $25 for a 5 round hunting mag and $35 for a 20 rounder. Midway has them for $23 and $30 right now. That’s cheap and assuming they work a great option. I haven’t tried them yet but they seem well made and quality. I have no intentions of putting an optic on mine. The combat sites that come on the gun are excellent. But the best reason to buy an M1A is if you’re in a restrictive state that doesn’t allow “assault rifles”. They don’t look scary with the classic wooden stock. However, if you are in a ban State I’d recommend a Ruger Mini 14 or Mini 30 which are cheaper and much lighter. I have a mini thirty, this guns little brother, and I LOVE it! It shoots 7.62x39 which basically is a low power 308 round. But for the high cost of a M1A, unless you love the rifle and it’s classic qualities, your better off buying an AR10. Thanks for the video.
Its a good platform. That's why after so many decades its still a such a popular rifle. I cant even guess how many rounds have run through mine and I've never had a issue. I have a B-Square mount on with a good scope it reaches out nicely and consistently. Yea it isnt cheap or light but its good looking and dependable.
It’s not the most accurate or best for modern tactics but it’s an OG rifle, pure Americana, and I can’t wait to receive mine later this month 😎 a must have for all enthusiasts
This has been the most informative video on the m1a I've seen to date. Very thorough - many thanks been debating on getting one this will definitely influence my pick.
I think you did an organized and informative review. It moved along at a good pace and covered may parts of the rifle and accessories which either an owner or potential buyer would find interesting. My opinion is you achieved the 'unbiased' goal stated at the beginning.
I'll add it is a battle rifle. As you mention, there are upgrades which can improve accuracy, and other posters here have suggested some as well. Battle rifles aren't designed to be tack-drivers. If this is one's goal, as you mention, be prepared to make upgrades. The alternative is to purchase a substantially more expensive platform.
I have a Scout Squad, it's an excellent rifle. I have not mounted optics, instead choosing to leave it with iron sights. Mine shoots a little under 2 inches at 100 yards.
That M1A is dang sexy with that battle worn look. Thank you for the thorough honest impression of the rifle. Love my Scout Squad with a black synthetic stock. Noticeably lighter than wood which I also own. The GG&G Scout Squad rail has a channel in the middle so you can use your irons under your optic. Liked and subscribed, keep up the great work, brother!
I really like my M1A, Scout Rifle I put a Burris 2-7x32 scope with M-Brace scope rings. I’m use to carrying a heavy rifle in the hills so it doesn’t bother me.
That gun is super accurate. Its not that heavy to me . A military mount screws in that hole on the side. Put a a trijicon creedo or leopold . Carlos Hathcock would disagree on this gun not being a good sniper weapon. The M1A /M14 is being used by spec ops today. Some are mil-spec. Guns are preference . You should buy what you shoot well with. A gun all depends on the shooter. Great video. Buy an ebr stock if you want to put alot of attachments. The harder situation is putting suppression on it but ive seen that done as well.
It's not super accurate. In fact, they're extremely difficult to keep accurate. The US military replaced the DMR and sniper version with the M110, SCAR-H, and the M110A1 as fast as they could.
Hard to beat for defending the home base. A bit too heavy for "scouting" with. 30 years ago when you could not buy a rifle with a forward scope mount I had a Burris Scout mount fitted to a Remington Model Seven. I put a standard Burris scout scope on it and I'm still enjoying it. Fired cases of Port ball ammo through it Recoil never bothered me and it was my go to to for deer hunting in the Northern woods. Took a med sized buck once at about 5 yards still hunting. Saw the bullet impact through the scope. I had a loaded M1A years back and it shot that port ammo great with the irons at 500 yards. Stupidly sold it along with seven 20 round mags.
Went all in on the Scout kool-aid years ago... now my Steyr wears an LPVO and my Scout Squad has an Aimpoint H2... your experience mirrors mine with the Springfield. Thanks for the video.
Got a Springfield Armory M1A Scout with a quick release mounted Leatherwood 2-7x32 LER scope as my preferred version of the Col. Cooper Scout rifle having trained on an M14 back in the day and have NO complaints. The distaff prefers her M1A Standard w/bayonet though.
Your review is spot on. Even the scope. It gets to hot up front and heavy. I have same gun, have gone thru many scope/dot/mount combos. Currently trying the "hopco" mount with micro dot. But I've had to do some machining on the hopco due to being out of square. ( I paid for the idea on the hopco) verdict still out tho. This gun will make a man out of you just trying to clean it.
@Red Barron Reviews i completely agree! It is likely in the end, I will wind up with irons back on her. Those are currently the trijicon front with large peep rear (aside from the hopco currently in place). I used the scout mount on a bolt action ishapore jungle copy 308. It works well due to less heat from the bolt gun.
I should’ve gone with the Burris. Regardless the M1A for me really wasn’t the ideal set up. This will sound crazy but for my area a 5.56 chambered gun does everything exceedingly well to include shooting big deer with less weight. I use an 11.5” AR pistol in 5.56 with 77gr OTM ammo, a suppressor, and a primary arms 3x optic and it’s really the ideal all around ranch gun. I do have a mini 14 ranch rifle that I’ve been playing with that might be taking its place though. It has some draw backs but I enjoy shooting/handling it more.
@@redbarronreviews2429 Totally same here. I now have my LWRC 10.5” .556 AR pistol with an Aimpoint T-2 and my Mini 14 with a Leupold VX-2 on hand out here in the country. Otherwise, the Warne QD rings with Burris are awesome with this M1A Scout.
I am retired USMC/ USA. I did 22 years, and was issued the M16A2 for 90% of my time in. From what I know of the M16A2, and what I read of the M1A Scout; I would have exchanged my A2 for the Scout, 'In a heartbeat.'
I’d take the M16A1 over both in a heart beat. The A2 is a great target rifle but I much prefer the weight and balance of the A1. I have a an A1 and A4 clone (and I’ve been issued the A4) and I much prefer the A1. The scout is a great rifle as well, but by far the M16A1 is one of my favorite, if not my favorite semi auto rifle. The full auto variant is very fun and controllable too. I too would take the scout over the A2.
Thank you for your service. I was in the Army for 6 years but I was shooting a M1A NM back in the late 70's before I inlisted and when I got into Bootcamp we had the Vietnam era Triangular Hand Guard M16 they were alright but I missed the Recoil at the Range and still earned an Expert Badge . I have 3 M1A's, 1st a Custom Built back in the 90's. That's the $6000 M1A that Red Barron was Talking about I have a Scout and a Socome 16 CQB I just did a Trigger job on all 3 with a 3.25 Trigger Pull I wouldn't part with them for a Million Dollars .
Just found your channel, great video on the M1A. Wanted the M1 for many many years. Was ready to spend the money on one a few months ago. At the last minute I went with the Sig AR10. For the same money bought the Sig AR10, scope, bi-pod, and a bunch of mags. One day I'll get the M1 but for now I'm loving the Sig AR10. Bad thing about the AR10's is each brand is full of proprietary parts.
That’s true, as long as it’s a reputable brand that will continue to make the platform you’re good to go, and I think you got a really good one! I have been Eyeballing the Ruger SFAR.
Just picked up my scout squad two weeks ago. Ordered 3 checkmate 20rd mags that work very well. It goes well with my navy modified m1 garand chambered in 308. Looking for a good mount for my optic so still researching best mount. Tbh, not impressed with my options so far so may just stick with trusty irons.
I use a Bassett Machining mount. It's been good for me and is highly regarded by others. It super easy install and it takes seconds to add or remove it to the rifle. The Sadlak mounts and other are very committing and force you to stick with them.
Scope mounts: ARMS-18 /swan. Best overall mount that’s low and looks factory. If you have a scout or socom16. Look for the lowpro. It replaces the scout mount and ties back to the stripper clip attachment making for long rail platform. Checkmate mags work well. Brownells had a 5 pack for a hundred bucks. Not sure if they still do… I have the loaded the scout and the socom. No issues with mounts or mags.
I built an Aero Precision AR10 with their stainless barreled 18 upper including full handguard and their lower. I attached a Magpul stock, Geissele trigger, Atlas bipod, Aero Scope mount and a Primary Arms PLX 1X8 FFP scope. The rifle shoots great and ran me about 4K for everything. The problem? Loaded with a 20 round mag, it weighs nearly 15 lbs. I hate carrying it. If I could shed 5 pounds or more on a 308 platform with a historical pedigree, I'd do it.
Ok , so I finally put that same scope and scout mount on my m1a standard and yes it does fit. The scope for the price was not bad I was actually surprised on how accurate it is. I zeroed at 70yards to make sure it was close and then I took it to 160yards and I shi% you not my moa at 160 was 1.125 yes it can do it . I did it with 4 rounds then I took it to 200yards I was hitting a 10in gong all day . My rifle I have up graded with n/m parts and a wood stock. I won't go in to it but there are some tricks I have learned to tighten the groups up with it. I think at some point I will do a video of this. Love the video 👍.
It is a good platform, whatever size you choose. The full length is accurate, great for longer applications, the socom is good for more intimate and sincere engagements, from personal experience. I can only surmise this version is someplace in between. There is no single perfect unit. It depends on your particular mission. Use what you have and are comfortable with, but some tools are better, depending on what you plan to accomplish. Precisely why you need different tools for different requirements. my suggestion is get the minimum you may need, and the maximum you can afford. God bless this country, our founders and our citizens.
Good presentation , made my scout into a bush gun : walnut stock with Dupage walnut hand guard internally heavy sanded to reduce bulk and give it an aero shape , installed flash suppressor with bayonet lug cut off ( prevents gas plug removal) , checked suppressor alignment, shimmed gas cylinder , iron field sights - nice looking rifle. Have a " Car 15" if I want light weight.
I bought an M 1A Bush rifle when they came out around 1991, same rifle without the forward scout sight rail. It originally came with a flash hider but I mounted a smith enterprise comp. Mine shoots just over 1MOA with scope mounted but I prefer the irons.
That’s my issue with Springfield. Most are 3 MOA, but some are sub and others can’t hold a consistent group at all. I’m glad yours is a rack driver! Thank you for the comment.
well you can get Check mate mags(gov contract) that normally about $30. but you need to shop around, few people use Springfield mags. most people want it as a scout rifle, last please stop being CHEAP, and my scout is about 1.5 to 2 MOA with good ammo, and good Scout Scope(Burris 2x7) good to (for Me) 500m. yes you AR can get that far with nothing left to do anything. so get off your recliner and use it.
I had a M1 carbine for years, wish I still had it!!!! I've always wanted an M14/M1a but like you said they are expensive. So for what they cost I got a couple of AK'S and I love 'em!!! Maybe one day. Great video!!
I love my M1A Scout Squad. Of course, I like the scout squad concept. A rifle that can be used for hunting or for battles. I put a 2.75 X 20mm Burris scout scout on my rifle.
I bought an M1A because I wanted an M14. I had no expectations for it except that it was an older battle rifle. It met and exceeded those expectation by far and away. Additionally, I often find myself wondering how people will justify kills at 500+ yards in SHTF if the entire world doesn't devolve into Mad Max world. Imagine SHTF happens and lasts 3 months. Now rule of law is reestabolished and the reconstituted government is now looking for the "Sniper of ".
I could be wrong on this, but rifle weight does not mitigate recoil, but instead it causes the recoil impulse to be spread over a longer time period, thereby reducing what is termed as "felt recoil." FWIW
No anger at your cons, here. While I'm a huge AR fan, I've always loved these and finally have one. To each, his own...none of those are cons for me, personally. Good video! 👍
It was a very brief RUclips policy that has now changed back to normal. They consider loading and unloading a firearm “modifying a firearm” and was therefore against community standards.
@@redbarronreviews2429 ah ok... i was just gonna ask the same thing, I was so confused seeing you turn your back every time doing that. That's so weird that RUclips thought that was modifying a firearm, I'm trying to figure out how that was ever considered to be that in the first place, even from the standpoint of say someone who had no knowledge of firearms... I don't get it.
The need for an adjustable gas system is not because it's picky, it's because they are overgassed and have a tendency to destroy parts. It does eat most 308 loads and keeps chugging, but if you want to lower the gas for parts longevity and if you want to suppress it then the AGB is a very good idea. If you suppress it w/o an AGB have mercy, your gun will die an early death an you will suck in a ton of gasses.
This may be a dumb question, but from what you said in the video. It sounded like you could shoot both 308. And 7.62 with out any type of conversation or separate firearm.
I’ve had no issues. I’d stay away from really hot 308, but standard pressure hunting loads and FMJ have been just fine. The M1A has a somewhat self regulating gas system which allows you to shoot a variety of 308 and 7.62 NATO ammo. I can’t stress enough to stay away from hot 308 like Hornady superformance though. Generally you can look at the velocity in the box of ammo and if it’s similar to NATO velocity you’ll be fine.
My buddy has a match stainless barrel model. 125 yards 3 holes in a shotgun shell. So very accurate. The recoil was worse than fal I had and a wasr 10. Not that it was terrible or crazy but way harsher than the fal and wasr.
Awesome video, thanks. what do you think the pros and cons are between the Scout Squad and the Socom 16? also , what do you think the general velocity difference is between the two as well? Thanks. :D
Thank you. The Socom is slightly handier with the trade off of more muzzle blast. The scout has a little better balance. Less blasty, but still obnoxious. Velocity wise I really don’t think there’s a massive difference. If you’re going to be shooting predominantly longer distances I know most people will opt for the scout. I preferred the scout, but both are great. I think either one will do the job for most people looking at barrel rifles.
@@redbarronreviews2429 Thank you so much for your feedback, I highly appreciate it. I'm going to check out more of your videos, i already subscribed and liked. I'm on the fence selling some ARs for a traditional rifle like this. I want a battle rifle was thinking of the Garand again, but something a little lighter, shorter, with good balance, and it seems the Scout M1A might be the ticket. A general purpose rifle. Thinking of the walnut stock that comes from SA too. Thanks again! :D
@@redbarronreviews2429 Also, I think I would remove the Scout's Pic Rail up front and just use the iron sights. I've seen a few people do this to the Socoms and Scouts, might take a little weight off and hopefully the balance might be better, idk. Thanks for your feedback. :D
I've got a Remington Model Seven in .308 with a scout scope on it. Probably has 1,000 rds. of ball through it. It it light weight and has been dependable and accurate. The weight of the M1A platform is it's one big drawback. Years ago I had a full size loaded M1A and it was a fine weapon. Probably at least a 3 moa rifle and it shot Portuguese surplus really well. Kind of sorry I let it go.
I also own that scope and I personally don't have any issues with the magnification at any point. Perhaps you just got a bad scope, happens from time to time.
Thank you for your honest review I just ordered one a few days ago I always wanted one you buy this rifle Because you want to own a piece of American history hopefully companies like magpul will tap into producing A polymer mag that will work flawlessly on this great rifle
@@StevenNorlander remember first generation Glock mags were bulging they would get stuck then Glock inserted stainless steel I’m sure the could figure it out
My MOS was 11D20 (Scout) 1970-77 1st of the 12th regiment 1st Cav. I was Airborne Assault Reconnaissance. I carried an M14 consistently ( I despised the M16 its untrustworthiness and lack of Effectiveness after 250 yards, that, and, if it hit a leaf the bullet could fly off in a totally different direction ) the M14 was heavy and so was the ammo but I'll take the weight & effective range over a Mattel toy. You are correct the very idea of enemy contact was not the plan. But I must say it happens far more than you want it to. I can tell you this... the M14 is a battle weapon designed to take abuse. I would carry nothing other than the M14 into battle. I'm assuming that scope you're using is not a long eye scope which is exactly what you need to use on a scout rifle. So far I've only found two manufacturers that make good long eye scopes. I picked up my Socom 16 for 1199$ on a Father's Day sale sale 7 years ago. The original M14 stock that you have on that Scout is exactly what I put on my Socom 16. I filled in the selector switch with a piece of Oak and restained the stock with oil same as we did in Vietnam. The biggest downside was the swelling of the stock in the extreme humidity of the jungle, that, and you could not fire it in full auto. That being said your review was very, very, very, very good one of the best reviews I've seen.
Thank you for the kind words and your input. I wish more people with real experience would do that. It was a long eye relief scope but not super great. They do have their pros for sure. For me personally a 20” light weight AR with 77gr ammo is where it’s at. There are certainly scenarios I would want more though, I just haven’t found the right 308 for me yet. It’ll probably be a bolt action though.
I have a Socom 16, a Chinese Polytech IDE M14, and a Howa HCR 308 long range American 🇺🇸 edition with Australian Carriage, 10 RD 🔩 action. Just to name a few. I do have home built great quality ( if I say so myself ) AR's for trading stock. I am definitely constitutional Second Amendment.
I own a SOCOM 16 and was wondering if anyone has added a bipod or an angle grip, if it’s a bad idea adding more weight to it? Thanks for the great Vid!!
The Socom is pretty close. It shoots maybe 1/2”-1” bigger groups. At distance it might open up but I didn’t take Socom out as far. My issue with the Socom is how blasty it is with the comp. It’s a ton of fun though.
I think in regards to the optics you can run a bad ace mount which is quite solid and adjustable along with a lion gears rail and you could then run anything from a red dot, to holo to acog etc etc the only real drawback is that if you want BUIS you would need to find some way to cowitness or tall mount the front one. The CASM scope mount is another great option which is not too far over the bore so you can still easily attach scopes and due its design its quite sturdy and looks awesome. The bad ace is about $90 +$15 rail and the CASM $139 so I think its not true that you need to pay a quarter k just to have a solid but ugly mount :)
Update on the Hopco mount and holosun micro dot... at 25 yds the rifle shot 2 feet high and the adj in the sight was maxed out.. Im going back to the factory mount and i bought a leupold 1.5x5x 20 firedot, I think its gonna be fine now!
I just bought a Scout Squad. I specifically wanted to stay away from the AR platform because of the "scary black rifle" crowd out there. I wanted the Scout for the shorter barrel for that very reason as well. A less "militarized" rifle (laughing to myself as I write this). My AR, I could get 1 inch group with iron sights on a target at 100 yards. That was with a Colt H Bar Competition. We will see what happens with the M1A platform. I am not looking to reach out and touch someone at 500-600 yards with the Springfield. If it is accurate enough for 200-300 yards I will be happy.
I have the Socom 16 and I can't for the life of me get the Vortex Crossfire II to get the required elevation. It is way off from the laser bore sight and I have tried low mount rings. I'm at a loss, I am starting to think something is wrong with the forward mounted Pic rail. God this is frustrating. Maybe it's my cheaper scope? I don't know anymore.
@@redbarronreviews2429 Thanks. I was headed down that track and had warranty repair initiated with Springfield. Ended up taking it to a Scopesmith who had it dialed in in 10 mins. Nothing wrong with scope or gun, guess it was my dumb ass obsessiveness.
If one like the M14 pattern of firearms, Bula Defense, LRB Arms, and Fulton Armory are better quality than Springfield. Bula and LRB use proper forged receivers, bolts, and op rods to the USGI M14 TDP specs. Fulton use a cast receiver, forged bolt, and forged op rod. Springfield uses cast receivers, cast bolts, and cast op rods. While a properly made cast receiver can hold up, Springfield has had out of spec dimensions on theirs. Springfield has had issues with their cast bolts cracking. Fulton Armory has had issues like this as well when they still used cast bolts, so they switched to USGI spec forged ones. Springfield's ejector spring is weak and should be replaced by a USGI one or new production from Bula or Fulton.
I heard it's a pain in the a** to change the barrel, is that true? Also can you put a 18.5in barrel on it? Springfield lists it as 18, but I've only seen 18.5in on aftermarket sites...🤔
Pretty much nobody uses these on active duty. NG units may have a few M14s but its not a lot, not my pick for a DMR, M110, as much as I hate it, would be a better option.
Perhaps the HK mfg G3 (Mod91) or a Belgian FN mfg FAL are superior. HOWEVER...neither is available any more here in the US. The clones which are available are not of sufficient quality. The M1A Scout Squad rifle is, IMHO, the ideal SHTF rifle. Yes, it's expensive. But CheckMate mags are reasonable and reliable...and a better scout scope makes the rifle unbeatable. Is it heavy? By today's sissified standards, yes. But I humped one through the jungles of Viet Nam - and was glad I had it. We all hated the transition to the Mattel toy mouse gun.
The competition: 4,000-dollar Scars with more felt recoil. There is not much competition, you are paying, 2000 and up for a 7.62X51 or .308 rifle Semi-Automatic. The only weapon that competes with a M1A is a FAL. To keep it 100, the AR-10 is cheaper and was developed before the M1A and is still in use to this day by the US military over the AR-10 Platform. It's not a WWII weapon, now that is fudlore.
At 100 yards it’s pretty negligible. My SOCOM shot .5-1” more than the scout but it’s so negligible it could just be the individual gun. I do feel more confident at 300 with it but both could hit man size targets. I like the size of the Scout better and once I get a flash hider I’m guessing it will be a lot loss blasty than the SOCOM. They’re both nice rifles and there are plenty of videos on how to squeeze better accuracy out of this platform. If I had to choose one it would be the scout though.
Facts matter. The Scout Squad weighs less than either the Springfield Hellion and a kitted out 16" AR15 with EOTECH and Flashlight and loaded mag. Also, Magazines aren't a "Con". How many firearms do you know that do not have anything but the Factory Option for each magazine? A lot of Sig and HK Pistols come to mind. Just because you're used to generic AR15 magazines that have 20 different companies making them isn't a good example. This means that only 2 magazine companies for the M1A is Par for the Course. Perspective Matters.
When compared to the G3 platform mags are high. Perspective does matter. I’m just saying for the price there is stiff competition and there is a reason the FAL and G3 served longer and are more wide spread. The M1A is a great platform, but it’s not all it’s talked up to be and for the price there are as good or better options. Just comes down to preference and there is nothing wrong with paying for an M1A if it meets your personal requirements. I personally really like the rifle.
I was wrong on the military MOA requirements. It was 4 MOA when these were developed which is consistent with the rifles I’ve shot, most of which are on average around 3 MOA with decent ammo.
Pull past the first stage then pull the trigger. You will do better
@johnkale6302 I understand how a 2 stage trigger works. That is the best this particular rifle will do.
If you get match grade ammo you will get better results. Shooting Federal 175 grain match ammo I get 1.5” average groups out of my M1A Socom.
I did some load development with hornady 168 bthp match bullets and get right around 1 moa. Granted, same effort with a decent ar-10 and I would likely have sub moa, but better than 3-4 moa is absolutely achievable.
@@fnkdtnk IMI OTM 175gr Match Ammo is good too From Midway USA .
The safety was designed that way to put a lock through. Very effective. Name one example of someone doing a negligent discharge... just one...
CMI, Check-Mate Industries is the manufacturer of Springfield’s mags. 20 rounders are $35
I stay clear of their new 25 round mags.
Bottom line, it’s a reliable weapon for people who know how to use it at its optimal range, and a damn beautiful rifle at that. 😊
It was the least reliable US military service rifle according the US government's testing.

Well said.
A bunch of Fuddlore nonsense
I run some magazines with me got 4 on my chest 8 on my lbe and a drum in the gun. I also have 10 extra mags in my back pack

Check-Mate makes the M1A magazines for Springfield Armory. You can find them cheaper without the SA logo.
I love the mini 14. Far from an AR, but still good.
Thank you for the comment and info on the mags.
I have a m1a standard and have purchased three 10 round and three 15 round checkmark mags. Grate gear, never any issues.
There's a "ban state" legal M1A scout. No evil front attachment but in return comes with a NM front sight.
Or stop complying with infringements
Its a good platform. That's why after so many decades its still a such a popular rifle. I cant even guess how many rounds have run through mine and I've never had a issue. I have a B-Square mount on with a good scope it reaches out nicely and consistently. Yea it isnt cheap or light but its good looking and dependable.
Good review, thanks for doing it as I like to see what others think of it. I own one and it’s my favorite of all my rifles.
I’m glad it’s helped you.
@wkenn14 thank you!
One of the better reviews I’ve seen on the M1A!
Thank you!
I have a Scout Squad, it's an excellent rifle. I have not mounted optics, instead choosing to leave it with iron sights. Mine shoots a little under 2 inches at 100 yards.
Absolutely love mine....fell into the Ar trap wish I hadn’t so long ago.
The AR is a better rifle.
Thank you! I’ll check out the mount. That would be handy to have.
How’s the recoil on the synthetic vs wooden stock?
I don’t notice any difference. It’s pretty soft either way.
I really like my M1A, Scout Rifle I put a Burris 2-7x32 scope with M-Brace scope rings. I’m use to carrying a heavy rifle in the hills so it doesn’t bother me.
How do you like the Burris? I’m shooting a PRS match in august and most of the targets are 400-800 yards. Is it adequate for that?
@@redbarronreviews2429 I like the Burris, I have only shot it out to 200 yards and it’s great. I’m not sure about anything past that.
Springfield Armory uses Checkmate Industries magazines. Checkmate is a lot cheaper.
Thank you!
Good honest video. Thank you for sharing.

Best review I’ve seen for this. Thanks! You’ve been a big help
Love my M1A1 scout squad
Got a Springfield Armory M1A Scout with a quick release mounted Leatherwood 2-7x32 LER scope as my preferred version of the Col. Cooper Scout rifle having trained on an M14 back in the day and have NO complaints. The distaff prefers her M1A Standard w/bayonet though.
Got the m1a standard and it is one of my favorite hunting rifles
Your review is spot on. Even the scope. It gets to hot up front and heavy. I have same gun, have gone thru many scope/dot/mount combos. Currently trying the "hopco" mount with micro dot. But I've had to do some machining on the hopco due to being out of square. ( I paid for the idea on the hopco) verdict still out tho. This gun will make a man out of you just trying to clean it.
For all of the gripes I still like it through lol. Thats the strange thing about it. Any other gun I would’ve gotten rid of by now.
I’ve been really liking this Burris Scout Scope on my black stock M1A Scout. I use Warne QD rings. Been a great setup!
Great set ups!

I have been
Eyeballing the Ruger SFAR.
Awesome review! You brought up a lot of things to consider before buying one. I've been eyeing the SOCOM-16 recently.
Thank you. They’re fun!
At least the irons are about as good as they come on them!
Saddlelack or something like that makes good ones.
I use a Bassett Machining mount. It's been good for me and is highly regarded by others. It super easy install and it takes seconds to add or remove it to the rifle. The Sadlak mounts and other are very committing and force you to stick with them.
I’ll check them out, sounds promising!
Scope mounts: ARMS-18 /swan. Best overall mount that’s low and looks factory.
If you have a scout or socom16. Look for the
lowpro. It replaces the scout mount and ties back to the stripper clip attachment making for long rail platform.
Checkmate mags work well. Brownells had a 5 pack for a hundred bucks. Not sure if they still do… I have the loaded the scout and the socom. No issues with mounts or mags.
Man, that's some ridiculous eye relief on that scope 😁
You’re telling me!
Its a scout scope and his is a really, really cheap and sh*tty one. f morons.
Get Check mate magazines they are the same as the Springfield mags but cheaper
Thank you. I’ll keep an eye out for it!
I found exactly the same thing on the magazines. Only Springfield Armory. Those work. Many others don't.
That sounds like an awesome set up!
Bula DMR if you want to mount a scope on a regular M14-type. Burris or Leopold Scout scope instead of the Vortex for a Squad Scout.
I really like the Burris. If it was my rifle that’s what I would put on it.
I had a M1 carbine for years, wish I still had it!!!! I've always wanted an M14/M1a but like you said they are expensive. So for what they cost I got a couple of AK'S and I love 'em!!! Maybe one day. Great video!!
Thank you. To be honest I prefer my M1 carbine. Not as capable but much more fun to shoot and carry around.
I love my M1A Scout Squad. Of course, I like the scout squad concept. A rifle that can be used for hunting or for battles. I put a 2.75 X 20mm Burris scout scout on my rifle.
What possible "battle" do you think you be engaging in?
I have one, just as I had in the Army. Fired expert with it. I love it. Now screw off.
Not you, RB. This is a good clip. Just the haters.
As if anyone asked
The full size Springfield loaded M1A's are very much sub MOA guns. You can pick those up for about 2 grand.
No they are not
I've had good experiences with pro-mag 50 rnd drums. If you want to put down belt fed like down range mag dumps lol
You seem confused. The government isn't your friend and works every day to take more of your rights away. That's the real SHTF.
I could be wrong on this, but rifle weight does not mitigate recoil, but instead it causes the recoil impulse to be spread over a longer time period, thereby reducing what is termed as "felt recoil." FWIW
I’m not sure but it sounds good!

Light weight shoulder weapon? I'd hate to see what was heavy back then. Probably the m2 browning 😂.
I’ve heard stories from WW2 vets talking about how the guys who carried BARs came out of the war with super swole arms 😂
I picked up a M1A on consignment in like new condition for $1,258 out the door in Sacramento, Ca at J&G Gun smithing.
Hell yeah it's worth it. I have one, and between my PSA AR-10 and my M1A SS I'd take the M1A all day long.

A polymer mag that will work flawlessly on this great rifle
Polymer is never going to work with that attachment method.
They could do metal inserts like on the AK mags.
@@StevenNorlander remember first generation Glock mags were bulging they would get stuck then Glock inserted stainless steel I’m sure the could figure it out
great tool!! we love our socom ii enjoy the day
My MOS was 11D20 (Scout) 1970-77 1st of the 12th regiment 1st Cav.
@@edthornton132 thank you for your service and I’ll take it a step further, I’m pro God given natural rights regardless of a constitution.
I own a SOCOM 16 and was wondering if anyone has added a bipod or an angle grip, if it’s a bad idea adding more weight to it? Thanks for the great Vid!!
It’s just preference. It’s not super heavy but in comparison to intermediate, chambered rifles, it is.
Thanks!
Looove the setup, specifically the cut-to-fit stock as well.
And how do you compare accuracy wise between the scout and the socom?
Always love the M1A many $$ but well spent. It does seem funny still using steel in a$$$$$ beauty. Just messing with you. Fun vid
Should have used a Sadlack mount...it will hold Zero. For mags use Checkmate..
Update on the Hopco mount and holosun micro dot... at 25 yds the rifle shot 2 feet high and the adj in the sight was maxed out.. Im going back to the factory mount and i bought a leupold 1.5x5x 20 firedot, I think its gonna be fine now!
Good video. Love the choice of Carpenter Brut intro.
Thank you!
I’m hoping someone can help me! I bought the scout, and when I try to move my rear sight (left or right ). Nothing Moves! WTH?
You sound like a Fudd. Not a real 2A advocate.
I'm really wanting one but can't decide between the scout squad and the loaded 22"
Tough choice for sure. If the longer barrel doesn’t bother you I’d go the loaded route. The scout for my uses was the ideal size though.
You do understand that Check-Make (CMI) makes the Springfield Armory magazine for them, right? You're just paying a lot extra for the SA logo.
You might take a look at the mount. Even if it’s fine I would lock tight the screws on it.
It happens. I only recently started using optics in the last few years myself, and it can be very frustrating.
what ammo do you prefer/has proven most accurate.
For cheap FMJ mine really liked PPU.
What size rings did you use for the scope?
I don’t remember at this point.
Smith Enterprise flash hider and GLFS improves the business end.
I’m not sure on these. I’m far from an expert on them when it comes to gunsmithing stuff.
It's not an AR, kid. The barrel is screwed and torqued into the receiver. The bolt and barrel must be installed by a gunsmith and properly headspaced.
@@Enjoyer.762 right, so an AR10 is superior and a better buy, you old fvck…😂
Accuracy goes way up with 168 grain match grade 308 ammo
Checkmate mags work great and cost 30 bucks. Pretty sure that's who makes springfields mags for these guns.
Congratulations on making it home, Mr. ...Took it's toll on a number of friends. .. was fortunate. Lottery #341 in 9/69.
It was *less* reliable than the M16
I Have all Checkmate Mags . Never had a Malfunction .
What sling did you put on it?
Surplus US Parade Sling. Might come up under canvas Garand sling as well.
Afghanistan need a m14 for range m4 inadequate
They were replaced with the M110 and SCAR H. Cope harder lol.
Its shoots great but expensive. Got it.
Any issues keeping the brake tightened?
I haven’t had any.
These days the big con is the cost/ availability of .308 ammo.
Still very available around my area.
@@redbarronreviews2429 Palmetto is low or out, I generally buy in bulk.
I have a match M1I love to shoot with scope. but mine is dam heavy rifle!
They are a dream to shoot though, they shed that weight pretty quick when you start pulling the trigger.
Can you tell any noticeable difference in groupings from a scout to a Socom?
I have a Socom and considered picking up a scout
