Absolutely fantastic! Brilliant concept for showing the original route.
During the early part of WW2 the line was doubled to assist arms and freight getting to Southampton directly. Many were surprised it was closed resulting in freight taking long diversions from the north to the ports.
Travelled this line from Fareham or Gosport via Eastleigh so many times in the late fifties. Not so many times going back as the train didn't run late Sunday so then bus to Basingstoke and on to Eastleigh by train. Took half the night in those days. Caught the paper train at Eastleigh to Portsmouth then ferry to Gosport or early morning back to Fareham. Preferred to Hitch. Always got a lift in uniform.
Deep joy!
That was superb.
Thanks.
Winchester Chesil must have been a very interesting station to visit, in its quarry like setting reminds me of Ventnor Town. Thank you.
brilliant video well documented I had just seen a video on you tube of a train journey in the early 60's doing the same run but further . any chance of continuing the journey to Didcot
