I would agree with Julie. Rapping is stylized rhythmic speaking over a beat. However, just because it isn't music doesn't mean it doesn't require talent.
Chris Tran I love Julie Andrews so much. She’s my favorite celebrity and I absolutely adore her. However, I do disagree with you and Julie that rap isn’t music. I agree with your definition that rap is stylized rhythmic speaking over a beat but by your own definition of rap we can categorize rap as music. It has a beat. It’s rhythmic. You can dance to it. Etc. I don't know that music has a formal definition by which you can determine what music is real and what is not, but It is my belief that any sound that has rhythm is music. Humming is music. Whistling is music. The sound of birds tweeting is music. Most classical songs are melodic and rhythmic without words or lyrics but no one argues whether classical music is music.
Julie's rap with Carol Burnette is awesome! She never disappoints! I miss her magical creamy beautiful voice but am happy she's so versatile & talented she inspires!
I am a singer. Have been my whole life. If I lost my voice, I would be absolutely lost and devastated. It has gotten me through so many tough times, and it is the one thing that I can always turn to. Nothing compares to feeling a song so deeply in your soul and belting it out with no shame! Julie Andrew’s is a legend. A true genius in her craft, and it would be such an honor to meet her just once!!!
I love that she says that rapping isn't music, because it isn't! I've always thought that too. It's fun to listen to and there are some very talented rappers around, but it certainly is just speaking on top of a beat, as Julie says here.
IrishEyes1989 agreed! Rap is like ACTING . . . there is no "melody" to rap. It is rhythmic speech . . . NOT melodic. Sure, drumlines are musical, but there is a discernable melody (to me) and not to rap. Rap is more like a poetry slam set to music.
it's not *singing,* but it's still *music.* The lead vocal may not be melodic, but there are plenty of musical aspects to it -- the entire instrumental, the rhythm, etc.
I agree that a lot of rapping out there is just speaking over a beat _which is fine_ but rap CAN be very melodic too, just not AS much as say a classical piece of music. It's melodic and rhythmic and in that sense it is music. I see where she and the commenters here are comming from, it is a so to say rather "alternative" form of music but it is a form of music and of course, a form of art.
mlc HC, the special was not done at Carnegie Hall. It was done at the Pantages Theater in Hollywood in 1989. She did do a special in 1962 withBurnett at Carnegie Hall.
I don't understand why everyone insists that she can no longer sing. She sang in The Princess Diaries 2. I think she just can't do the more powerful higher notes anymore but instead can do more sultry soft singing.
So Ursula succeeded in taking away Ariels otherworldly singing voice. such a loss for us humans to not hear how an angel sings anymore. her voice was magical. :(
I strongly agree with Julie Andrews in her remark that rap is not music. It does not have the melody, only the beat and rhythm. As a huge fan of Julie, I miss her singing voice but I admire her optimism toward her voice. I listen to her songs when I miss her as a singer. Julie is so elegant and amazing. By the way, this is the URL of the video which Julie talks about rapping with Carol Burnett. It was aired in 1989. This is so funny. I hope you will enjoy taking a look at it. ruclips.net/video/XguwG_VHCSM/видео.html Mama's Rap
Nope. It’s the other way around. She developed nodules and got a surgery which was a botched surgery which permanently damaged her voice. Nodules themselves are temporary and heal with time.
Thank you Julie for breaking it to people- rap isn't music. At the most it's rhythmic poetry, but certainly not music. I love her even more now (if it's even possible).
She is just so gorgeous!! I absolutely love her
she looks so sad , when she talks about singing :/
"Rap isn't music"
The queen has spoken, we can all go home now.

I love the way she talks about rapping, saying that it's really just speaking to a beat & she'll leave it to the people who do it best! :-)

If that is the case, one could say that drumming isn't music either. And I don't like rap, but do like drunmming.
Rap is music it’s just not singing
I heart Julie.
Where?

Andrew Shearin Yes it's still art. "Rhythmic poetry" is probably the best descriptor. And while poetry is art, it isn't music.
I agree I don’t like rap and don’t think it’s music

Lol she went to watch Hamilton afaik
Rapping may not qualify as singing but it does qualify as poetry.
nope- it qualifies as verse at the very most.
If only.
@@voxtur__7 i think it all depends on the artist. there is real poetry out there, as profound as anything ever written.
I've never heard her say OR w/ an R! my mouth just dropped open!
Love her she is such a honest humble woman.
Her singing was so delightful I loved all her songs in Mary Poppins , she is a Queen
This makes me so sad 😭 I wish I could give julie my voice so she could sing again
Aww
Thankyou Julie! I try to tell my friends rapping iant music all the time!
Vc tem o céu nossa olhos. As montanhas na voz e o carisma dia raríssimos! Vc viverá pra sempre! Deysr.
Vc tem o carisma dos raros!😊
God, I love this woman. What a great attitude to have
Love her rapping with Carol Burnette in Carnegie Hall, seen a clip here on You Tube! Mama's Rap!!! She can do anything & make it beautiful

Julie was AMAZING in her rap. Shes a pro at anything and everything. Um...practically purrfect in everyway? STUPID DUH.
"Repping"? OHHHH "Rapping! Duh..."
Good thing she didn't ask Julie if she liked "Fush en Chups"...
Sadly this situation has happened She's really Super Cool 😎

I think rap can be beautiful. It's storytelling, spoken word poetry really. Don't hate.
I love Julie!
Yes, you're right. I don't hate rap coz I' a Kpop enthusiast. But you're still right since rap has no melody.
If she can speak she can still sing, the tone maybe was darkened but of course she is able to still sing, something seems off about her story
Her vocal cords got permanent damage and that's why she had to do surgery on it to make it heal faster.
Nope. It’s the other way around. She developed nodules and got a surgery which was a botched surgery which permanently damaged her voice. Nodules themselves are temporary and heal with time.
Julie Andrews must hate Kanye West then
Sophie Hanssel Most people do
I think we all do
Rap is music depending on what you’re lost omg to. It’s called Conscious/Political Hip-Hop.
Well, I'm just confused ... she can obviously speak, so why cannot she sing? Just prolong the wooooords ... isn't that it?
She CAN sing, but not hit the high notes, as she used to do
Thank you Julie for breaking it to people- rap isn't music. At the most it's rhythmic poetry, but certainly not music. I love her even more now (if it's even possible).
"Rap isn't music" sounds like she's butthurt her voice doesn't make music anymore XD
Julie Andrews doing rap? Please! How insulting!
Look up Mama Rap, it's actually really funny. 😂
