    Saying that they put honor higher even than gold won't put you in the book. Greed that becomes theft is one of the sins that will force a dwarf to take the slayer oath. His crime dishonor not only him, but both his family and his clan. Scamming on deals, in splitting loot and taking a greater share than you should, or cheating in games of chance, all sins concerning riches of some kind, will have a dwarf forced to take a slayer oath. Especially if he cheated or scammed another dwarf. Gold is in this life, honor is what counts when you trek to the halls of your ancestors in your afterlife. An honorless dwarf will not gain entry, but be lost in the cold forever, and only by becoming a slayer can a dwarf regain his honor by dying in battle.

    Back in the day, I occasionally ran a single Slayer character, just for fun. But it never seemed to make any sense that, from a lore viewpoint, these loner, suicidal, nut jobs would ever band together into units. That, and you certainly got the feeling that Slayers of any ilk were pretty few and far between. Too rare for there to be enough of them in a single hold to form a sizable unit. The exception, I guess, was the hold of the Slayer king, who’s name escapes me at the moment.

    maybe im misunderstanding what you are saying @15:24 but doesn't the motley crew rule make you spread the casualties to the upgraded slayers as well?

    • @ClydeMillerWynant
      @ClydeMillerWynant 24 дня назад

      In combat enemy models in base to base with particular models of yours have to target those models so those are the ones that have to be removed. Your Giant Slayers have to be in the front rank so are very likely to be the first ones killed when you take a charge. Other than against WS5 or WS2 opponents they're not any better defensively than the Troll Slayers unless the extra point of Initiative comes into play, but it usually won't at least in the first round of combat. If you've charged and some of your models get to go first then assuming they haven't taken too many casualties the enemy will very likely target the GW models to take them out before they get to strike. That's my understanding anyway - taking from the back is only a practical thing for when it doesn't matter as all models are the same.

    • @xLAZY666
      @xLAZY666 24 дня назад

      @@ClydeMillerWynant At the time stamp he is specifically talking about taking ranged dmg, and the motley crew rule states "Against enemy shooting, casualty removal should be divided as equally as possible between the different models within the unit."

    • @ClydeMillerWynant
      @ClydeMillerWynant 24 дня назад

      @@xLAZY666 I thought he was talking about both, but you're probably right - his use of 'cut down' threw me and made me think he was including combat as well. From missile fire you're clearly going to lose some of his front rank and some of his back rank - how exactly that's determined isn't clear to me. I have seen people claim it should be proportional - the maths can get messy on that front and may require more dice rolling, and others who say that if there are say three different types of model you take one casualty in turn from each type - this seems to unfairly remove your minority (in this case elite) types too quickly. I think I've also seen someone take from the biggest group until numbers are even and then start taking from all groups in turn - can't see how that can be right though. And if there's only say one casualty are you just taking from the biggest group or rolling dice to find out where it comes from? Would love to know how this is being played in tournaments etc - probably hardly at all with regard to Slayers, but it must come into play with Black Orcs and could be extrapolated from that. Hopefully people are making it both as fair and as simple as possible!
      In any case when/if you do get into combat I'd be pretty confident you'd really want some of your best stuff in the second rank as it's the second round of combat your Slayers are going to have the best chance of doing any damage in - you'll lose too many models to the charge in the first round and want some well armed models left for after that. Giant Slayers have to go in the front rank though. So on all fronts I don't think Mordian's idea helps at all really.

    Genuine question: what is the consensus on how casualties from missile fire are split when a unit has Motley Crew? I've seen more than one interpretation and one of them makes Giant Slayers pretty much unplayable. I mean they'll probably get killed before getting to strike if they make it into combat anyway, but it would be nice to at least get them that far.

    • @mrsnakesmrnot8499
      @mrsnakesmrnot8499 24 дня назад

      Well, in combat, it is simple: remove casualties ( of a motley crew) from the front rank - not the rear, because the rear rank is not fighting and dying. As you have stated, casualties from shooting is less clarified as to how “evenly” the types are split. It is simple if the crew is a 50/50 mix of troll and giant slayers. For every one troll slayer shot, remove one giant slayer. If there is an odd number of casualties, there will be one extra troll slayer killed.
      Now what is fair if there are 10 troll slayers and 2 Giant slayers, and two or three shooting wounds occur? At what point is it fair to remove one giant slayer as a casualty? In this case, most would say, “two troll slayers and one giant slayer are dead,” which is why you think that shooting unjustly hurts giant slayers. It definitely doesn’t follow the rules to have all three casualties be troll slayers; so, the moral of the tale is to NOT get shot if if you want your giant slayers to see combat. Hopefully, GW will FAQ this issue, just to settle disputes, with a better example than mine. Life is not fair for the minority troops in this case.

    • @ClydeMillerWynant
      @ClydeMillerWynant 24 дня назад

      @@mrsnakesmrnot8499 The most extreme understanding of it I have come across (not a game I was playing) is that equally means that if there are two casualties that would be one troll slayer and one giant slayer no matter what the proportions are i.e. if you have two giant slayers in your unit of 12 the giant slayers will be two of the first four to die. If anything RAW does seem to lend it to that interpretation though it is very hard to imagine that is what is intended. What I would like to know is how are people who are playing a lot doing it - Black Orcs seem to be very common and some people must be fielding minotaurs so it must be coming into play even if very few players are fielding (mixed units of) Slayers.
      Totally agree about combat and Mordian's idea about a back rank taking the casualties is clearly wrong.

    • @mrsnakesmrnot8499
      @mrsnakesmrnot8499 24 дня назад

      @@ClydeMillerWynantIt May seem extreme, and “extreme “ can be a term for other rules as well, and we can assume that the rules have other intentions, but there is a faq or errata, equally / evenly is going to remove an equal percentage of various types of soldier in a motley crew formation, unless it is a template weapon, of course.
      Ex.: A unit of brigands with 10 regular blokes, 4 with crossbows and 6 with blunderbusses… TEN shots will target 5 regular, 2 with crossbows, and 3 with blunderbusses, and this, in my opinion, is the best interpretation of the somewhat vague rule.

    • @ClydeMillerWynant
      @ClydeMillerWynant 24 дня назад +1

      @@mrsnakesmrnot8499 You seem to think I'm arguing something that I'm not. I agree that the way you describe is more or less how it 'should' be as I think it's fairly reasonable - this contradicts the interpretation I described as extreme which takes 'equally' to mean something different to 'proportionally' and they have a point though I personally think it should be taken as 'proportionally'. However, it's far from clear that that's how it is. I also think it states that it's the casualties that are distributed evenly, not the targetting. So in your example we need to look at how many casualties there are. For any given number how are you splitting them? Are you rolling dice for it? What if the maths isn't neat etc. What I'd really like to know is how tournaments are playing this - not that I have any intention of going to any in the near future, just that that's the only way I can think of of getting an idea of whether a consensus has been reached on it.

    • @mrsnakesmrnot8499
      @mrsnakesmrnot8499 24 дня назад +1

      @@ClydeMillerWynant I haven’t seen consensus anywhere. In my last example, instead of “target”, I should have described removing casualties, as the entire unit is really a single “target”. I see what you mean about the difference between the extreme equal method and my (our) proportional method, but if anyone wants to understand my rationale, I thought the intent of the rule as written was to remove “equally” as in the “fairness to each sub group” type of “equality”. So, It isn’t equal treatment in dwarf society to only make troll slayers pin cushions. Equal treatment means that giant slayers should also have to be pin cushions, target dummies, draftees… they aren’t royalty! 😁Being a social studies guy, my brain’s default setting is social / class struggles. lol-So my idea of equal / fair treatment of the target dummies IS proportional %.
      Anyway, I wonder as well about the divisional math which more often than not has a decimal number. I was going to give examples of how to most fairly do this, but the more I think of it…. I CHANGED MY MIND. I now feel that the most flavorful, easiest way is to make it RANDOM, which is “equal” treatment in MY book. We want to avoid advanced math. So I like this house rule, at least until the faq clarifies it.
      The player with the motley crew unit has a glass jar or clear bag with 10 red (pick one) marbles, tokens, painted 25mm bases, or dice, or whatever the player has available that represent the 10 troll slayers of his unit, the clear jar/bag/plastic Tupperware container also has five blue marbles or dice or whatever, OF EQUAL size, representing the giant slayers, so when the motley crew get 3 shooting casualties, the opponent can draw 3 elements from the SHAKEN container, as he looks away, of course. He could draw all blue, or all red, or any combination, but this most realistically represents what happens when a volley of arrows comes raining down on a block of troops. If someone complains, “Yeah, but I am more likely to pick a red one,” you answer, “Yeah, that’s how it would actually be in this scenario.”
      Of course, the drawn marbles are left out of the bag. Next time the unit is shot, make sure that the number and color of marbles in the bag are the same as what is on the battlefield.
      Of course, follow the rule that says one giant slayer must always stick around until the end to hold the unit’s standard, if I recall that correctly.
      This method of drawing chits is perfect for the scenario where brigands have either just hand weapons, crossbows, or blunderbusses. 3 different colors of chits and no hard math. It’s like a fast mini game.
      Um, the characters and command don’t have chits representing them, of course, as regular rank and file troops are the lucky or unlucky pin cushions. Thank you, Socrates, very much for inspiring me to think on this as much as I have.

    The main problem ist the "Motley Crue" rule. This rule is so complicated and can be easily abused, Black Orcs really know how to do so!
    Besides that the Slayers are very strong for their points, but good players can outmaneuvre dwarfes easily and then shoot the slayers! If stuck in a big unit with more initiative they won't do that much either.
