Great battle! One thing to note, though, your wizard wasn't allowed to target the mangler squig during turn 2, as magic missiles require line of sight to target a foe. Line of sight in Old World can only be drawn in the model/unit's vision arc, which is the the front 90 degrees of the unit. Furthermore, the Squigs during turn 4 were not required to make a panic check, as Immune to Psychology applies to fear, panic and terror
Usually, the cannon is aimed 10 inches back from the enemy’s base. So you can add the 1st dice and then the bounce. It’s more likely to hit the target. This will work more for single targets. For big blocks maybe aim 6-8 inches in front.
I've been pouring through RUclips and Reddit, devouring The Old World content, especially battle reports. I hadn't found a channel that I loved yet, until now. Omygosh this was so well done. This gentleman's narration was SO much fun! I loved the thematic voice acting, "DRIVE THEM MEN!" Seriously, just top tier content, thank you for this. Subbed and eagerly awaiting more content! Also, that KITTY 😍
I find it to be a bit of a bummer that fanatics are so strong. Its such a fun concept which would be way cooler if there werent always a bit of a bad feeling for the receiving player
Only way to kill with shooting is to incidentally catch them with a template (breath weapon targeting a unit with fanatics in between, scatter a template onto them etc)
Can you get the fanaticals to shoot out as before with moving a unit close enough? Also what about outnumber +1 for biggest unit in close combat resolution? Is that gone?
Fanatics are even stronger than you think. The Goblin player may place them during ANY start-of-turn subphase. So he can just place them 3" away from his units at the start of the enemy's turn. If the enemy then charges, he has to go through the Fanatics and take 3D6 hits. After the charge the Fanatics move and in the turn they are placed the Goblin player gets to control their movement. So he just moves them through the enemy unit again for ANOTHER 3D6 hits. That'll delete most units in the game for 75 points.
Every greenskin keen to win will always use these - they do now seem overpowered as you choose when to release, its like a mini directional nuke going off, noone can stand 3D6 STR 5 AP2 hits. Either be debuffed or increased in pts or numbers restricted
Not being able to choose when to bring them out (automatically when enemies in X inches) allows some counter play. Scatter dice on release, possibly allowing a hit to be choose direction would reduce the initial NUKE. Allow to target with shooting would limit the ongoing nonsense. Still denies an emergency shooting/magic turn.
Heavy Casualties: If, during any single phase other than the Combat phase, a unit loses more than a quarter (25%) of the Unit Strength it had at the start of that phase, it must make a Panic test. P161
It didn't matter in the fight between the Empire general and Goblin boss, but Night Goblins have Horde (Rank Bonus goes to +3) and Warband (add +1 LD per rank) so the goblins went from LD 4 up to 7 (I think and 8 was rolled). Though I believe they fall back rather than flee.
Nice, classic match-up. Love the terrain and the church in the middle. Cool. My Orcs & Goblins is basically just Core and some characters right now. Lol. But pretty fun with loads of greenskins in big -ish blocks
Yeah I really love the sight of those Empire Core blocks. Nice stuff and the smaller detachments.. Ah.. Lovely. Playing smaller games with more basic troops is nice. Some escalation league or just some small narrative campaign.. Not always having big fuckers and stuff..
Cool battle report. A couple of points for you. Firstly as others have noted you can't target fanatics and your wizard couldn't have seen mangler squig. Secondly cannons (like most artillery) have the skirmish rule and can pivot without counting as moving. So the cannon could have fired grape against both the squig hoppers and goblins. Also the spearmen should have followed up after they pushed the goblins back, it would have counted as an ongoing combat so they could have fought in two tanks.
I think when the Night Gits fell back and into the church footprint, they would now be 'disrupted' because they are straddling an obstacle, (wall, fence, etc.) So that will affect them next combat, they wont get their rank bonus, is that right?
This brings back some Nostalgia. I may have to give Old World a try at some point, although I'll probably 3d print what I need until they release new minis for the factions I like.
Power scroll doesn't just add another dice. You roll the extra dice and then remove the lowest scoring die from the three you rolled. So you rolled a ten, not 13... Besides a dispell roll of double 6 always dispells unless it was cast perfectly.
Love the empire. Been writing fluff for my army after every battle. Lost all 6 of my inner circle knights to a fanatic last game and my chapter master to some trolls
For the algorithm!!! Looking forward to our first TOW encounter! I have a feeling that your Sorceresses' dabbling in Daemonology might attract some 'unwanted other worldly attention...'
Gonna be honest, the Prayers of Sigmar and Ulric look better than a lot of the magic lore spells. Ulric looks good with boosts to charge, defence or damage, and Sigmar looks great to pair up with Flagellants with ward saves vs missiles and reroll 1s to hit and wound
Fun to see some fantasy battles. Personally I won't return to GW and Warhammer Old World as I instead started playing Kings of War (after the fall of 8th edtition warhammer fantasy battles). Have you tried that game Mordian Glory? Whilst Kings of War felt a bit simple and such at the start, now in 3rd edition, it's very fun and has a lot more tricks, whilst still being well balanced and easy to play. I can recommend trying it out and it is SO nice to have multibase units with some cool options for scenery.
If you really wanted a Runefang, you could say that your mercenary captain has the Drakwald Runefang, Beast Slayer. Maybe when the last count of the Drakwald was slain, a fake or other sword was sent to Emperor Boris, to rest in the imperial treasury. Now your Captain has the real thing, maybe taken from the person that made the swap originally, or at the end of a chain of black market fences and thieves that's so long and convoluted no one knows where the sword came from. Maybe he doesn't even know what sword he wields, just knows that it kill damn well.
You asked if you were supposed to take Panic Test from wounds inflicted by the Fanatics. There used to be a catch all rule in 8th about taking casualties from "events" that are outside of missile and CC attacks, so you might have had to take a Panic from the Fanatics. Check if that catch all event rule is in this new edition?!?
Goblins and Night Goblins have Horde so they should have gotten an additional combat resolution during the combat on the right flank. Also they have Warband so they add their rank bonus to their leadership so 6+ 3 rank would have given them a leadership of 9. Should have checked their rules first come on!
Your mate saying he wants to dump the gits already! You wont learn with that way of thinking! I'm an old O&G player and a pure Night Gits army is the hardest to run, no artillery, no chariots or cavalry, apart from the Squig hoppers, mediocre shooting with Night Gobs archers with short bows... Fanatics do the damage while they last, Squig hoppers hit hard if they can get there. You need lots of characters to deal out the attacks and kills, they're super cheap. Also, the Night Gobs secret weapon.... Trolls, standard cave Strolls!
Nope, and they don't die and deal extra damage when charged through. So the whirlyboys will stay around and goof around a lot longer than in 8th for good or for bad.
Great battle! One thing to note, though, your wizard wasn't allowed to target the mangler squig during turn 2, as magic missiles require line of sight to target a foe. Line of sight in Old World can only be drawn in the model/unit's vision arc, which is the the front 90 degrees of the unit.

This will work more for single targets. For big blocks maybe aim 6-8 inches in front.
I assume from the backside of the enemy's base? Because 10 inches away from the base will let you miss pretty often..
iirc aiming 4“ in front of the base (so 4“ would just hit it) yields the mathematically highest chance to hit.
10 inches for 1-2 ranks
8 inches for 3-5 ranks
6 inches for 6-8 ranks
4 inches for 9+ ranks
@@christopherclayton5500 i think your table is upside down? If you aim 10“ back from the base with only 2 ranks the chance to hit nothing is immense
@@lestrike2707 The table I provided is from the front rank (like the original poster).

You can't shoot Fanatics. Quote: "Death of a Fanatic: A Fanatic model cannot be charged, targeted or attacked in any way."
Only way to kill with shooting is to incidentally catch them with a template (breath weapon targeting a unit with fanatics in between, scatter a template onto them etc)
Or a terrain spell, something like tempest and the likes.
oof, really? That was a key way to get rid of them in previous editions.
vortex is the way to get rid of them....if you don't mind having a vortex right beside ur own unit lol
Can you get the fanaticals to shoot out as before with moving a unit close enough?
Also what about outnumber +1 for biggest unit in close combat resolution?

They definitely need a bit of tuning, at least a way to force them out early like they've always had in previous editions.

Immune to Psychology also means immune to Panic (pg 171 ) So the squigs facing the cannon would have survived
Not in old world.

@@karlaldridge4848 Yup, in the Old World. Page 171 in the rulebook. The squigs shouldn't have exploded.
Great batrep Mordian. It's so chill watching you getting your feet wet in ToW. It would be rad as fuck to see more games soon
I think you forgot night goblins have mob rule they get +1 leadership per rank
They also have Horde so they can claim 3 ranks instead of 2.
I love a Ork vs Empire battle ❤️
And I do enjoy the wee stories you come up with for a battles 😊
Doesn't magic have an view/firing arc too? When the mangler squigg was zapped it would have been out of view?
true dat.
Great vid! Excellent atmosphere, commentary and cool mini play.
There's a guy in the place with a bitter sweet face and he goes by the name of Ebeneezer good. Great shaman name Simon
Men of the empire, we stand and FIGHT
also first law slaps

Both units should have tested when they were hit by the fanatics.
Good spot! We will remember for next time, inthink we were just caught up in moment with how epic the fanatics were!😅
It's great to see to see people play Old World, I'm happy that the original Warhammer is back!

well and 8 would be a flee

Great board. Loved the backstory in the beginning and that you actually named your army. Seemed like a really great game!
Loving the First Law references for your heroes! Great battle report!

You have Jezal and Bremer as your melee characters, but you don't have Bayaz as your spellcaster!? Blasphemy!

I noticed the similarities between the mercenaries and the black company..hopefully this mercenary company doesn’t meet the same end.
