Jack, a game called "Songs for a hero" is a must play for you, i guarantee you gonna love it. It's a musical game and your whole adventure and every action is narrated trough a song so very entertaining.
I love how the fuel gauge literally is used as a sign of emotion in the end it had the look of someone passing away. A old sad but understanding look and as the night comes the last final light of your freind who's pulled you through so much goes out. He did his job brought you where you needed to be atta boy Thomas you did good rest easy old friend you deserve it.
Completely agree, by the end when only half of the vehicle was left, I wandered off a little bit and He inched towards me with the sail and that broke me internally. A vehicle made me feel more emotion than anything else.
54:15 The "little thing in the foreground and the massive thing in the background" could be described as "size-dominant background" using art terms, but maybe a one-word term that would apply (but in a less specific way) is "sublime" (in philosophy, literature, and the arts, the sublime refers to "a quality of greatness that is beyond all calculation, awe-inspiring or worthy of reverence"). Seeing the scale of the world and realizing things are so much bigger than you is awe-inspiring, after all.
Hail shouldn't set the sails on fire though, I would think. I've never had it set anything on fire around me, including my car when I've had to drive through it. It did really resemble hail in form and sound, I agree, but I also thought Seán was right that it had an acid nature to it since the sails had to be continuously doused with water so as not to set on fire. Since the rest of the weather was pretty transient and intense and a bit dystopian I wouldn't be surprised if it was acid hail of some sort. But I have absolutely no idea, I'm just guessing :)
@@sunstripe85 well it was not the sail that was on fire though, it was the machine which controlled that operated the sail that broke, and i don't know about you, but i am quite sure that when something like a machine ,which is using some kind of fuel or electricity is really damaged a lot, it has the habit of starting fire.
Honestly hearing about the people who resolutely refuse to stop living in nuclear fallout zones or similar, simply because that's where they've always lived, this kind of reminds me of that. The main character doesn't want to leave their home behind, because that's where their loved one is buried. Then they think there's no point going because everyone has already left without them. Only to get to their destination and find out everyone else was just waiting for them to make the decision in their own time
In literature at least we call that forced perspective “the sublime”, where you’re overpowered with emotion because of an enormous, humbling thing. Poets of the 1800s talked about it with nature and it comes up a lot in stuff from that time :)
Yeah, same with philosophy and art. The sublime refers to some greatness beyond what we can possibly measure, and it’s basically exactly what Seán was describing in that part of the game, the vastness beyond us and the amazement/humility we feel when observing it. I get it when I look at pictures from the Hubble telescope or read about the infinite nature of the universe
What a lovely and cozy "movie time with Sean" vibe this had. Watched the whole thing in one sitting though that wasn't the intention when I hit 'play'. Well done and rust in peace, Thomas.
It was genuinely way better than some movies. I just downloaded the game after watching like 10 mins of this, but instead of playing it myself I just watched the whole thing here.
This is making me irrationally angry lol Every time he's wincing because he's about to slam into something at full speed I'm sitting here like "THE BRAKE, JACK! YOU HAVE A BRAKE! YOU CAN PREVENT THIS!"
I actually like the fact that at the end of this game, the water started to rise and the rocks you just ran across sink beneath the surface as the "tide changes". (Part 2 is called Changing Tides)
in my eyes the analogy is essentialy that we grow very attached to anyone or anything when going through tough times together, supporting and helping each other, so much that loosing them or it, hurts more
Yeah yeah that's an awesome idea. And the part when your ship/train is wrecked you light up a light and and move on meaning that you need to move on even when that someone/something is ended

That's one of the things I like about the micromanagement in this game - you can never screw yourself over with your fuel management. Even if you run out because you just don't pick any up, you can tow the train to the next one by hand. It'll be slow, but it's doable.
I really do adore these long, atmospheric and almost silent kinds of games. So glad Sean does too. We need more games like this that really just makes you think and immerses you in the ambience of it all.
the end was so tense, I kept waiting like "where's the horn, they have to give us a fog horn or something, they can't just end it like this!" and when the horn came I felt so much relief XD
In the beginning I was very skeptical, I thought it would be too simplistic for my liking but I’m glad I stuck around. The art style and the music and the visual storytelling was phenomenal. Seriously underrated game, I had never heard of it until now. I really like your take on it representing an afterlife journey, but I interpreted it more as perhaps a journey through grief. In the beginning I’m pretty sure that was the grave of a close loved one the person was at, which is what sparked the thought it could be a journey through grief. The first stage of grief is obviously denial, which I think the character may have already gone through and now had shifted into the anger stage of grief when we start the game. The first actual colour that wasn’t a shade of grey or black that we see is red, which is associated with anger. Then we shift into the bargaining stage as we start to see more colours in the blue isles again. After that comes the depression phase, which represents the darker colour pallet again with the occasional reds. Then finally the last stage is acceptance, your train boat is destroyed and you choose to leave it behind and move forward again by lighting the beacon and rekindling your hope and happiness. Those are just my thoughts, it definitely seems like a game where the interpretations are up to you! No one is right or wrong :)
THE SEQUEL IS OUT IN 2 WEEKS FROM WRITING THIS COMMENT , jack.. You know what we need. Or not its up to you but this game was amazing. And another 2 hour video about it would be epic. Apparently this one is about boats. So cya there -maybe- Jack!

That's Jack's analogy of how he faces obstacles in his life. He doesn't back off and cower from but instead pushes through, struggling till the very end

Everything's so pretty and peacefull until you can imagine all the "JACK, THE BRAKES HIT THE BRAKES" screams huehue Really nice watching you play this :)
I remember first playing this game, it was great knowing it’s a silent narrative while also showing much of the story through visuals. The game doesn’t show you much on how the game works, but let’s the player figure it out for themselves. It doesn’t hold your hand, but instead let you strategize while also take in the game’s atmosphere. Can’t wait for the sequel!
It reminds me of that one other game with this perspective Oh yeah! I think I'm thinking of inside?.... maybe?or was it limbo... Oh It was inside jack just helped me remember
I just got home from school and was like "Hey this thing from Jack in my watch later looks kinda cool, Imma make dinner and watch some of it." I then proceeded to watch the whole thing just vibing and enjoying the ride. What a lovely game that reminds me too much of Inside and the likes of minimalist, gorgeous and ambiguous storytelling. Such a great watch! Thanks for playing it!
Jack: “you spend the afternoon watching a 3 hour movie.” Me, resurfacing on his page after discovering and watching critical role for a month and a half: “i mean…. I’m just here for you.”
I swear I’ve never had a more emotional reaction in a game more then watching Thomas slowly break apart I was in emotional shock as we left him to rust AND HE ISN’T EVEN ALIVE
These short, visual based games with little to no talking are some of my favorites to watch because they’re so atmospheric and bring about a story of personal interpretation. As an enjoyer of creativity and an artist myself, the vast emptiness and the dimensional 2D style of this game is like art porn to me.
that ending almost hit me as hard as BT, we will forever miss Thomas, what an awesome story, and what a beautiful experience. thanks jack for the 2 Hr chill pill!
All I can say is that it was a very beautiful in art style and story telling game. It told a story with nothing but a train and some energy but it sent a message that all of humanity eventually moves on with each other, each at our own pace.
That game was a MASTERPIECE. The entire experience was just so beautiful, from the soundtrack, to the art, to just being on the journey that of itself. Such beauty, I kinda can't really comprehend it. Have a wonderful rest of your day, to all of you.
I never thought about the afterlife interpretation, but it makes sense, especially since you see the grave in the beginning and the coffin in the larger vehicle later.
These types of games are some of my favorites and they honestly make me so emotional so it nice to see Sean play some of them again. I've missed these types of playthroughs everything feels so fast paced now in the world.
Every time Jack says “look at that it’s really cool”, the first thing that comes to my mind is that one moment when he played the last of us 2, shortly after Joel’s death scene when everyone was sad and some others literally cried, Jack was like “look at the light reflection, it’s so cool”
I loved this. The whole experience. Sitting down to watch this, exploring the world along with you, watching your journey. Even the length. I watched the whole thing in one go, actually was playing my own game while watching you. It was a relaxing escape. Lots of fun. Great game!
I loved this, the whole gathering fuel as you go thing and jack just picking up and "hoarding" all of it even though he didn't need it was somehow very comforting.
Sail train: Has brakes. Sean: Hits the brakes to stop to pick up fuel. Also sean: Slams full speed into every obstacle without even trying to brake. Me: 👁👄👁
I love it when Séan plays these chilled out, beautiful kinds of games and to see how much joy he gets from them. That was a well needed relaxing 2 hours ❤️
Dude this is one of the most chilled and pretty games I've ever watched a gameplay of, it was so so peaceful. Thank you Sean for always showing us beautiful games! I was cringing every time you bashed the ship to a halt instead of using the brake though hahah, also you could use the front door to scoop up the things on the floor instead of stopping ;) Edit: I now realise you get a sucky upper hoover upgrade haha!
I don’t know when I saw this game but I remember playing or seeing a demo of it and finally I was able to get the game for myself. Seeing this notification brought back a childlike joy that I haven’t felt in a while
Yeah I tried a demo version of the game a while ago, but for some reason couldn't get it to DO anything. None of the control keys actually worked and I was too annoyed to try and troubleshoot a free demo. Maybe I'll try the full release.
"It's just like going over Denmark, not a hill to be seen" As a danish person, I do not know if I am offended, or glad that Sean acknowledged my species
As a Swede living in Malmö, I can only agree that Denmark is flat, especially since Danes invade Vallåsen & Kungsbygget ski-slopes in northern Skåne... (Well, Skåne is flat too, but on that border to Halland, there is a bit of a rise)
I love that the train really does look like a whale. The energy being the eye and when it's getting low on energy, it looks like the eye is closing as though it's going to sleep
And when you vent steam, how the energy-liquid sloshes makes it look like it's furrowing its eyebrows with determination to go faster. Like, *hrrrrgh! Full steam ahead!* for all of a few seconds before it sloshes back around.
Please tell me someone notices it looks like a camera too? Like the front piece you can see where the flash would be and where the lense would be and the back piece up top is where you'd look through...(?)
I highly recommend the game Gris. It's an indie scroller type game like this that has an AMAZING soundtrack, the story is told through colour and is beautifully emotional.

These short, visual based games with little to no talking are some of my favorites to watch because they’re so atmospheric and bring about a story of personal interpretation. As an enjoyer of creativity and an artist myself, the vast emptiness and the dimensional 2D style of this game is like art porn to me.
Agreed. These type of games give me chills no other indies can. The sheer storytelling purely based through visuals will always take the cake for me.

All I can say is that it was a very beautiful in art style and story telling game. It told a story with nothing but a train and some energy but it sent a message that all of humanity eventually moves on with each other, each at our own pace.
