      In the Middle Ages, about one in five married women died in childbirth. Showing what they showed was, I think, a great way to highlight the bravery it took for women to go through it.

      whole heartedly agree - even today, childbirth can be incredibly risky. The cuts between the melee and Aemma fighting as they cut into her was an incredibly powerful piece of storytelling. It was very hard to watch the first time, but upon rewatch I am in love with how they shot it. It doesn't feel unnecessary in the slightest, quite the opposite.

    Idk, all due respect, I was pretty disappointed by your reaction to the childbirth scene. It’s one of my favorite scenes. This show brutally demonstrates how little history has cared for women. The show isn’t “relishing” in the violence, it’s showing you the truth of childbirth and violence against women. And in an era where women have lost their fundamental right to an abortion, it’s extremely necessary for people to understand that truth.

    • @hectorminator
      @hectorminator 9 дней назад +1

      I didn't think our reaction would have been interpreted that way, and I'm sorry about that. I don't think we believed that HBO was "relishing" in the violence we were seeing on screen, (but personally speaking, I also know HBO has had a history of emphasizing violence towards women gratuitously in shows like this, to the point where actresses had to speak out against it and it was lessened in later seasons, and I don't fully trust the producers of Game of Thrones to have women's best interests in mind when making shows like this.) But for this specific scene, I think we reacted very honestly to an incredibly violent and sad scene, that was made with the intention, I think, to make viewers uncomfortable. It was brutal, like you said. I agree that it's necessary for people (and men) to understand the truth of childbirth and the risks to women it poses, and I believe the three of us felt that, and I hope other men did too when the show came out last year.

    The next time any of you gentlemen disrespects fantasy languages, I hope you remember that Tolkien, before and while writing LOTR, was a Professor of Anglo-Saxon at Oxford University. He also did a translation of the Old English epic "Beowulf" that was published after his death, and yes, invented two fantasy languages in Lord of the Rings which were probably linguistically sound, though incomplete.

    • @hectorminator
      @hectorminator 10 дней назад

      And? Does this fact diminish how modern fantasy uses mostly white actors, American or British, to play mostly white characters in these movies or tv shows, while using invented language that sounds closer to nonwhite languages than modern English? Does your background fact of *one* writer mean that there is no truth in my observation? In my opinion?
      Next time you think I, or anyone that looks like me, "disrespects" fantasy language, I hope you remember who is mostly represented in this genre in film and television, and what you're doing to ensure that fantasy is as inclusive as it can be.

      I'm 10 minutes in and honestly it feels like they are using comedy to cope with how serious the show is. As long as they are willing to give all 10 episodes of season 1 a fair shot, that's all that matters. The show really hits its stride after the pilot.

    The Game of Thrones TV series (and books) and House of the Dragon (and the book and story on which it is based) are a different sort of fantasy, far darker and more cynical, than Lord of the Rings (which is probably the classic "high fantasy"). I happen to prefer LOTR, but there is no denying that Mr. Martin is a good writer. I prefer the TV versions of his ASoIaF ("A Song of Ice and Fire", i.e. works set in Westeros and other places in that world) series, because the written works can be very dark and, frankly, the Game of Thrones novels (particularly those after the first three) needed a good editor. I enjoy the intrigue in HoTD, the way it blends royal succession drama with dragons as WMDs, and Mr. Martin's admitted use of a real life historical inspiration (the period in medieval English history called "The Anarchy", some 20 years of civil war between rival claimants to the crown of England and parts of France).
    On to your coverage of Episode 2!

    As a long time viewer of these guys for YEARS, I think some of the comments are a little too overly serious about the guys reaction and HOTD/GOT is a little TOO precious for certain fans. In an overly serious way. I read some of the comments before watching the video and... you'd think that the guys were reacting differently than they usually do to shows. I didn't see anything wrong. If anything, I'd just say that HOTD is a maybe a strange show to watch people react too since it is a violent high-drama series, so you're either going to get a ton of silence or talking. Nothing wrong with the jokes they're making, you gotta be okay with people poking jokes at the things you like, especially if they're not as into it as you. You might even learn something from their perspectives as outsiders to the series.

      I feel like some of the people in the comments are.... You know when you show your best friend something you REALLY like? You're so excited for them to love it as much as you do? But you're also really anxious in the off chance that they won't? So your shoulders are really tense, and you're just braced for the negative outcome, but also ready to FIGHT if they don't see it as you do? I think that's what some people are doing in the comments, and you guys just need to unclench. Just chill.
      if you actually make it through to the end, you can see that they appreciated what they saw even if it isn't necessarily their cup of tea and it's fine for people to feel that way too.

      Eh i just prefer less constant jokes and criticism. Especially with a universe that at least one admitted wasn't his thing. Feel like they are only watching it cause it's popular.thats not entertaining to see in a reaction.

    2 main points. 1st the smaller of the two. Noting the spots that made you guys uncomfortable, the brutality of the child birth scene and Rhaenyra being hit on when she looks like she's 14. Just you wait. 😮
    The second being how neither of you could get into the first series. OMG! Hector! My man of story telling. I harken back to your MCU days of reviewing I think Wandavision or Loki season 1, "Story potentiality! Story potentiality." You guys called this first ep of House of the Dragon as just setting the stage for things to come. That is what the whole first season of Game Of Thrones is. It's setting the stage, setting the chess pieces in place to tell a grand of a story. Yes the final season is objectively terrible. Im in the minority when I say I liked the finale season. The story choices were perfectly fine, my gripe is that it was a shortened season and felt the events were rushed. It wasnt played out as organiclly as the rest. I think most peoples issues come down to so many different types of set ups and potential outcomes but there can only be one. Every season after 1 just gets exponentially better and better. The interwoven and connected stories is on another level. I promise all 3 of you, if you give Game Of Thrones an honest chance, you will enjoy it as much as you all enjoyed Andor. Youll see a familiar face or two as well. And I know how much you all liked Andor. The writing and acting in Andor make it the Game of Thrones of Star Wars. You'll learn to love and hate characters and towards the end you find yourself liking characters you initially hated in the first flew seasons. Such epic writing, acting and production.

    Honestly, I quite liked this show. I went into it with caution after GoT s8 and was pleasantly surprised. There are some changes from the book that I'm not crazy about but don't mind. My only serious complaint would be that, like its predecessor, this show suffers from dark lighting, which means sometimes you can't see a thing.

    The real bummer is that you seem to have let online discourse sway whether or not you watch GOT. There's no denying that the last 2 seasons were not as up to snuff as the what came before but I find it a bigger bummer that people just dismiss the entire show now as "bad" just because they didn't land the plane the best. GOT was an amazing series and I find it super weird that these 3 completely stayed away from it. My guess is you aren't going to understand much of what's going on in House of the Dragon.

    Lord of the Rings is about the common folk?
    I do prefer LOTR, but most of the characters are gentry, nobility or royalty: all the hobbits but Sam are members of the finest, oldest, wealthiest families in the Shire (Pippin's family had originally been given the responsibility for governing the Shire in the name of the King, but it's lapsed to an informal, distanced sense of responsibility since there hasn't been a king in a thousand years at the start of LOTR). Sam and probably Gollum are the only commoners who are main or even supporting characters.
    Gandalf is a wizard who is actually an angelic emissary from the gods who are far away in Valinor, beyond Middle-earth (Saruman was one too, but he defected to Sauron) and has had a mortal form for about 1000 years (since he was sent by the Valar to Middle-earth to inspire and encourage the people of Middle-earth to rise against Sauron).
    Boromir and his brother Faramir are the sons of the hereditary ruler of Gondor, the largest and most influential kingdom in Western Middle-earth.
    Eomer and Eowyn are the nephew and niece of Theoden-king of Rohan, all three members of the royal House of Eorl.
    And of course there's Strider/Aragorn, who has the best human pedigree and claims the kingship of Gondor and Arnor in the end.
    Even Legolas is a king's son. Gimli is related to royalty, I believe, though he doesn't have a title. (Beregond, Bergil, and Ioreth were probably commoners, but they didn't appear in the LOTR movies, so you might not know who they are)
    Let's not get hung up on a character's class - characters of all classes can be good, bad, shades-of-grey (most of the HoTD characters), but hopefully all of them have some interesting features.

    Something that pisses me off about (nearly all) people reacting to this episode, is that they respond to Baelon’s birth as if it’s presented as an “either/or” situation. At no point does the maester give any indication to Viserys that there’s a chance to save both, or whichever one he desires to. It’s presented as “we can try to save your child, or let them both die”.
