Been thinking a lot about Super forms, so it's about time we went back to Archie to checkout the famous Super Sonic vs. Hyper Knuckles one-shot special!

Oh this is happening! We’re getting closer and closer to the infamous Ken Penders’ Knuckles comic run! Nick can’t hide from it forever

There is something really delightful in seeing these two superpowered, invincible, immortal beings just yelling schoolyard insults and yanking each other's hair.
I generally prefer things to have an actual, you know, story, but as I get older I really appreciate the vibe of the early Archie run. They really encapsulate an era of sincere, goofy fun that you just don't see anymore.
One thing I do love about the Archie Super forms is that they all have unique adjectives for them. You got Super Sonic, Hyper Knuckles, Turbo Tails, Master Mogul, Perfect Chaos, it was cool. Kinda wish they kept that for some of the characters. Like instead of Super and Hyper Knuckles, we get Hyper and Ultimate Knuckles. Instead of Super Mighty, we get All Mighty. Instead of Super Ray, we get Ultra Ray, etc.
I love the variety SO much.

Yeah, really freaking sad that the only character they bothered doing this for canonically is Burning Blaze. And Burning Blaze isn't even a clever pun like Super Sonic, it's just an alliteration that literally translates to "Fire on fire". And some versions of this transformation like the Archie one aren't even actually on fire, at least that's something IDW fixed.

Knuckles running across the ground on his hands is the exact type of insane energy we need for fight moves in this series.
Meanwhile, twenty-ish years later Batman vs Superman's fight ends when the name "Martha" is mentioned. Green rocks were also involved, and nobody in the audience is satisfied with the outcome.
I wonder how the Chaotix of the games/IDW would react to meeting their pre-SGW Archie counterparts, mainly in that Knuckles leads the Chaotix.
Unrelated but I had this idea where if Julie-Su existed in Sonic Boom, she and Knuckles would have a relationship akin to Nicole and Richard from Gumball where she’d love Knuckles in spite of his idiocy.
Yeah! I love to hear talk about Archie Sonic comics from people who were consuming them when they were relevant. Comics have changed a lot over the years and I feel like people brush off this run a little too much. Quality could have definitely been better, but I love how insane and experimental they got. The wild artwork and ideas sparked all sorts of creative stuff in my head, and sometimes that's more valuable than a well polished take on an existing formula. Granted Archie Sonic did plenty of crappy takes on existing formulas, but when they kick it up it's so much fun.
Watching this, I'm impressed that Knuckles has been portrayed as Sonic's reliable and friendly rival again in recent years. I think it would be a good idea to give him his own series independent of Sonic, like Donkey Kong.
I’m assuming the emeralds are gray on the cover because their energy is getting absorbed by Sonic and Knuckles. You can see a green aura around the emeralds, showing their power getting sapped away.
I'm with Knuckles on this one.

Your thoughts are all pretty much the exact same I had, to being excited for the comic, to the funny little jokes and interludes, to being a little disappointed in the fight and confused by the elements inside the zone, to still being happy it happened, everything. This comic was great and it was amazing to revisit it here now.
Still one of my favorite issues, even after all these years. Absolutely love the art and how many creative ways they have these 2 pummel each other.

Back in the day, it was easier to accept the inaccuracies of how the the Super forms looked, how the special zone looked, and other details. Because not every kid was capable of beating the Genesis games, especially if you weren't using a Game Genie or any cheats. You might get to see Super Sonic or Hyper Knuckles maybe once (might not even be on your copy of the game, might be on a friend's copy or something), and you'd have hazy memories of it at best by the time you picked up the comic. There was no internet. No one sharing game sprites. No one talking about the finer details. You could still notice things, like the Emeralds being multicolored in the games and not all green, but it was still a lot easier to enjoy and accept whatever the Archie comics were doings.

I had this theory that the climax of the fight where the zone was destroyed was actually an early, raw and unrefined version of what would later be called Chaos Control.
I real love your analyses. Going into depth, while criticizing and praising. It gives me more insight into these things. It was cool and fun to just see Sonic and Knuckles duke it out. I love their friendship nowadays, but the old stuff still has wonderful charm.
I would really like to see something about Archie Amy. It felt like she was undermined a lot, but also some good moments. Wish they didn't scrap her potential story arc. But this is just one idea. Just do you, dude.

Ya know, this is kinda like that time when Shadow and Knuckles fought in the Archie comics. Different circumstances, but one was just as stubborn as the other and both didn't want to talk it out. All it took was that first punch.

I never grew up with the Archie comics since those were before my time. (Although I do keep up with the IDW Comics.) So I like watching these speed reading videos on them to see what I’ve been missing.

But I did read all the comics and specials before issue 57.

This was one of my favorite comics back in the day. I would love for this fight to be redone with more fight scenes added. That superpowered throwdown blew my mind and I love the fact that Knuckles used his game superform and I really wish his superform was used more or at least used in the IDW comics.

I'm suprised, I wasn't expecting an Archie video but I'm glad it's on an issue that I own! I don't mean to be picky, but the emeralds on the cover look less Grey and more like a combination of the green, cyan and white emeralds from the games. The material the cover and pages are made of were printed more like a newspaper or a paper back book, so there isn't a glossy finish like new-er comics. I'm sure the quality has degraded and the paper isn't as white now, but the colors are definitely darker/less saturated than the updated "Sonic Select" scanned print. Sorry for long comment, but it's one of my most Valuable comics and most favorite sonic anything. Thank you for doing such a nice video about this weird, hype, goofy story

One of my biggest motives in reading these comics has, of all things, been watching your videos. I just want to watch your vids without fear of spoilers- so I must consume the entire archie such that I cannot be spoiled on anything.
Anyway, love your stuff, and I love these comics. Just about to get to the fourth section of the reading guide, "1999-2003: Robotnik's Return," and eventually I'll be able to watch all your videos without fear lol.

I didn't have too many Archie Sonic books as a kid, but I did have this one, and read it all the time, cuz Super Sonic is cool!
Always found it odd that Super Sonic’s quills didn’t stand up, since in his first debut, issue 4, they do. But I have always been a fan of there being more than seven Chaos Emeralds, and I really like all the Emeralds being green
The Sonic Select series was my introduction to the Sonic Comics and Sonic Select 2 was the first ever comic I owned, with this very story being the first one I saw. It was awesome and all I wanted. Read it over again and again.

As a 10 year old kid, my first Sonic Comic was Archie Comic #40. So I missed Triple Trouble, Sonic vs Knuckles, Super Sonic vs Hyper Knuckles, and Mecha Madness. I remember having to use an in comic order form to send in a money order for all of them. Lol good times. Mecha Madness was my favorite but Super Sonic vs Hyper Knuckles was sooooo Hype. I want Spaz’s autograph before he’s gone!!!
This story Archie Sonic Comics so hard. The epic battle between Super Sonic and Super Knuckles boils down to Archie Sonic being an absolute troll.
The emeralds on the cover are probably become depleted of their power dew to both of them transforming, who knows in the comic's since they were all over the place but I loved them as a kid.

Yeah the Inaccuracy was Knuckles going Hyper using the Chaos Emeralds as Hyper can only be obtained by the Super Emeralds being in unison with the Master Emerald
He didn’t go hyper, he went super. In Archie Knuckles calls his super form hyper to differentiate himself from Sonic.

I didn't get to grow up with archie but after and I got into it, fell in love with it, and hate some parts of it but overall love it.

We haven't seen super forms clash?... 9runs through all the modern games in head)... huh, no I guess we don't. Doesn't help they don't want anyone beyond hedgehogs to have super forms, but only thing coming to mind is Sonic and Shadow, but that was in Sonic X, an anime, even if based off the Adventure games that doesn't happen in any games. Super weird to think about, but I guess makes sense, super forms 9and by extension hyper) are only from inate goodness of chaos energy. Like Perfect Chaos or Metal Overlord... I guess coooould count? Because they're using negative energy, but it is a monsterous form, not super, and... well by extension that's kind of werehog Sonic.
There is 1 game I can think of... but it involves spoilers... only say Triple Trouble 16 bit Remake, play it, free, super fun, easy to get and play, Game Jolt, or if you want playthroughs of it there are many out there.

I know this isn't connected to the theme with this video, but Being honest. Both Nails (F.Y.I. I'm nails is actually metal tails, I wanna call him nails because, hey, if the people who made Sonic Prime can call tails' pirate dimension counter part a word related to that world, then by bogiddy am I gonna call metal tails nails because nails rymes with tails because tails also rymes with sails) and Mamy (which of course I'm refering to metal amy) don't seem to be fitting the killer robot theme that we see in monic and Muckles.
Both Nails and Mamy look like protecter robots built by tails, and not killer robots built by Egg-man. Also metal tails has hedgehog eyes. And they don't look like monic's eyes, they look more like sonic's eyes! Don't worry, they eyes of Nails and Mamy are the only things about their designs that I don't like.
