“While you might not realise he’s an android, you should recognise he’s a dick...” - this sentence is so funny, and has an air of truth to it, especially when I look around the staff canteen where I work!!
The biggest mistake they made was breaking quarantine. The fact Dallas was ordering, "to Hell with quarantine!" proves he should never have been captain. Ripley was far more intelligent and clear headed. I think it's awesome they made this fantastic space horror film and the protagonists are basically the equivalent of transfer-truck drivers hauling a load cross country. Having such drivers in my family I can say that it's pretty accurate.
May Dallas and Kane are great friends, so I think that Dallas did not follow the rules because of that, he let his emotions get better than the crew safety.
The start of most sci-horror movie usually seems to start with someone not caring about procedure and then paying for it. But alien is one of the few movies that pull it off in a way that isn’t completely infuriating or totally unbelievable.
@@yeetsheet9537 They might have survived if Ash didn't overude the air lock entry. Ripley was the officer in command and she ordered a quarantine. And she was right, Ash should have followed that order particularly as the science officer. But well ... we all know why he didn't ...

Me to Xenomorphic: "Look dude: You can't exist, you break the Laws of Thermodynamics. You can't grow like this in a few hours (or days, or months for that matter.) Matter is never created or destroyed: WHERE DID ALL THIS EXTRA MASS COME FROM?!! I'm calling bullshit." That's how I'd survive
It could possibly just be volume, and retain the original mass unti they consume a fluid or a solid. We don't truly know how dense or what mass the chestburster is it could possibly be a quarter of the host's mass at the largest. So in the case of Kane maybe 35 to 45 lbs. I mean he was complaining of ravenous hunger which would coincide with nutrient depletion caused by rapid parasitic growth.
In the script and novelization of Alien, it was described that the crew found their food stock raided by the xenomorph. That would explain where it got all the acquired mass from. Since the morphing of Brett and impending impregnation of Dallas was cut from the movie, we might assume the xenomorph ate parts of them for nourishment, too. Since none of this made it into the finished movie we are left to speculate. However, the laws of thermodynamics have nothing to do with acquiring mass. And matter can indeed be created and destroyed. This comes out of Einstein's special theory of relativity, which shows that energy and matter can convert into each other. It takes a ludicrous amount of energy to create even tiny amounts of matter, though. So I think we can safely assume that the xenomorph had to eat or in some other way assimilate other matter in order to grow. It was Giger's vision that the xenomorph looked part organic, part machine. It could very well be that the xenomorph fed on parts of the spacecraft itself in order to gain mass and grow.
You may be right, but I think the reason Ripley asked Hicks how it worked was because she is a commercial pilot not a marine, and would likely not have used a weapon like this. I wonder what weapons the Alien Covenant crew were using, as it is technically set before this movie!

It's always troubled me that when the crew first sets out to explore the beacon, Dallas says, "Better break out the weapons" (or similar words). Later they seem to be carrying multi-barreled weapons as they navigate towards the alien craft. So there are apparently weapons aboard the Nostromo, but they make no appearance after the chest-burster appears, requiring Parker to fabricate flame-throwers, which are of no practical use at all as the plot unfolds. Perhaps Weyland-Yutani had planned this all along, knew about the Xenomorph eggs, and didn't want to risk the crew destroying it. So they had all weapons removed from the ship.
I read an Alien novelization where a renegade Dr did experiments with adrenaline and fear suppression. He discovered that the aliens large cranial structure is necessary to their hunting, a psychic receptor picking up victim's fear.
