The monorail was doomed after an accident in 1996 where the two trains ran into each other, many were injured and Butlins was fined. The monorail never ran at Minehead again.The earliest CGI video for how the Skyline would look at Minehead did actually retain the monorail and showed it going in and out of it, so at one point it clearly was a serious thought that they could keep it, but that would have ended after the accident. I imagine the death warrant on the chairlift was signed at about the same time and any possibility of keeping them post-1999 was over.
My first ride on this was in June 1972 aged 7. Why would you ever remove an iconic Butlins attraction like the chairlift or monorail?
