It's true that - to know whether a meteor is a Geminid or just a random meteor - you can trace its path backwards in the sky. The Geminids radiate from near the star Castor in the constellation Gemini the Twins. Not sure what you mean by "not going thru our atmosphere." Yes, the meteors are coming through our atmosphere. As far as I know, we can only know that it is a Geminid by its radient, but since it is not going thru our atmosphere it will not show any direction.
