I worked at a restaurant chain called Friendly’s in 1984, and our uniforms were all double knit polyester. You could spill ketchup on them and rinse them off with a hose sprayer and there’d be no stain at all. They were super uncomfortable but easy to maintain.
Lol I vividly remember that green. Mom and I were gifted a bolt of that when the boys were seriously hooked on teenage mutant ninja turtles. We made jumpsuits and then created turtle shells for Halloween costumes, they loved them! When they could no longer fit into them they gifted them to their younger cousins. Very long wearing fabric
My first few sewing projects were polyester double knit. [I was a teen in the early 70s.] I remember one pantsuit with a vest ... I was a perfectionist and people would argue that I could never have made it! Poly double knit is very easy to sew, and a good pressing makes it behave well. It's the perfect fabric for a 15 year old perfectionist using her mom's 1950s era Janome. The fabric was hot, but I lived in San Diego, didn't wear it in summer, and didn't bother with a coat. In college, I got my own sewing machine (Sears Craftsman) and switched from polyester to cotton velours and wools. In the decades since, my perfectionism has faded a bit, too.
I started college in a double knit bell-bottomed pant suit. I believed myself to be beautiful. Of course, most days were bell-bottom jeans or cut-off shorts and hippie tops - I was an art major. But, double knit meant that I did not have to iron dresses or 'pant-suits'. I also did not have to put them in the dryer as they would not wrinkle if just washed and hung. I wore lots more pants than dresses because stockings were not optional. Texas. Hot, hot, hot. By the time I dragged myself through to graduation I only owned one dress. I had another at Mom's house to wear to church when I visited her. It was double knit. :)
Yes I made myself a double knit hot pink bell bottom and matching long vest when I went to university as a reaction to school uniforms. However I lived in Canada and had a 20 minute walk to the train station and a 15 minute walk from the station to the Hall building in Montreal. Polyester worked well from October to March. Plus as you said washable and no ironing.
I loved this video. Bless June's Journey for carying the entirety of costube on its back for the nth year in a row. This was glorious and I loved the groovy 60s music. :D
I was Velma one year! I had a red cowl neck sweater from goodwill and a pleated orange skirt, all polyester. I was the Velma from the old cartoons from the 70's.
I did Velma too once, last minute before heading to the Halloween parade at my kids’ elementary school. The idea first came from my glasses. I already own an orange turtleneck. To me, the skirt is brownish, and I happened to have a brown half pleated/half circle skirt. I easily found a brown bob wig, either from Walmart or Dollarama…needless to say one of those wigs that were under $5. The hardest thing was to find knee high brownish socks, cause I also happened to have heavy calves. And I already owned Mary Jane. It was all simple, but the kids at school recognized my outfits, they thought it was neat that one of the parents had dressed up. And like maybe 12 years later, my kids still remember. And well, no sewing involved, cause every time I started making a costume for myself, I always ran out of time…this year included! That’s ADHD for you. Maybe I should start for next year.
I’ve never used the big plate that came with my Bernina. I’ve had the machine almost 30 years!!! Those purple double knits are perfect for Daphnes costume! Double knits are super easy to work with. The light purple stripes hit in exactly the right spot!! Great fit!! Well done! I just remembered a fabric that was popular in the late 60s early 70s. Bonded double knits!!! It was a heavy double knit and on the back side of the fabric they bonded a Trico (sp) like fabric. Talk about HOT!!! That stuff was so heavy!!! And so thick!! I remember making culottes out of it. I wore them to school and roller skating. I made a pair of pants out of that stuff too. One of the bonded knits I used had an almost foam like layer bonded between the knit and the Trico. YIKES !!
When you saw yourself in the mirror with just the front half of the dress, you looked like you were so happy. I don’t know I’ve never seen you with quite that childlike joy and delight on your face before. That was a treat.
My grandmother got the bright idea to gather up all the leftover pieces from the sewers in the family and make quilts. The one and only twin quilt was 2 tied together layers and you only needed a sheet under it during an Iowan winter.
This turned out so good ! You did such a lovely job recreating Daphne ! The Hex Girls have always lived rent free in my head as my most favorite Scooby Doo memory!
As a child from the 70's, I am proof that you can survive. Luckily you can't smell pictures. But they really were wrinkle free. - Cathy (&, accidently, Steve), Ottawa/Bytown/Pimisi
I am almost positive that Daphne has pockets, so your dress is accurate there too. thanks to my little sister, we watched A LOT of Scooby Doo growing up
OFC she has pockets, considering her personality I think she'd definitely need them so she could carry at the very least some Chapstick and a little sewing kit to mend her clothes advert all the running she does
I hit peak chaos listening in my headphones to Stephanie look for her pocket pieces while I ran around the house looking for my mislaid phone. Found it and loved the reveal ❤. BTW my grandma wore her lilac double knit polyester suit only in the winter. In Iowa 😂 Absolutely love watching your content!!
Great job! It always amazes me how you can take a 2 dimensional drawing and turn it into a recognisable 3 dimensional garment. I am in awe of your skill. And of your willingness to wear double knit plastic in heat and humidity.
You look so amazing in this dress! I know you made fun of the fabric but it’s perfect for this look. You need to make another dress like this in different fabric, because it’s very flattering on you. You should always show your legs! You have great legs!
I refused to wear anything that was polyester double knit. Oh, the horror of wearing it! Besides, that's what my mother wore! Please, just give my bell-bottom jeans and t-shirt! (Well, now, straight-legged jeans, and definitely a cotton t-shirt!)
This brings me back to the very first episode of Scooby Doo. Of course, the girls' clothes were groovy. About this time in my youth, there was a new fabric called double-knit and Mom enrolled us in Stretch & Sew classes so we could learn how to sew stretchy fabrics. I made a pantsuit and was in a contest-fashion show at Montgomery Ward, in the basement. LOL. I was super hot in my pantsuit in Arizona. I do remember learning to cut open the sewn darts on the wider end and press them open, only if the fabric was too bulky. Now you know I am kinda old. Love your channel! The dress turned out so cute.
Funny thing is.... I made this same purple dress (without the lilac stripe) in Home Ec. in 7th grade. Also without the pockets. I loved it but then we all wore scuba fabric in the 70s. Thankfully that was before hot flashes. 😂
I was in grade school in the seventies and remember double knits without any fondness. I remember wearing it, but I never sewed with it. I started sewing at age 9, but mostly cotton or cotton/poly mixes. My mother did, however, and she says it was easy to sew. I just can’t even think about wearing plastic now. Too hot, even for here in Iowa!
Oh my goodness! I’m not done watching and I have to stop to comment. Not only do I love the dress, I love how much thought and creativity you add to your videos: the editing…the music choice…perfection! I’m so grateful I found your corner of the internet!
As someone who was a kid in the late 60s-early 70s and who had to wear polyester double-knit, the only good thing I can say about the stuff is it doesn't fray along the cut edges. My grandmother actually made a quilt from the fabric. A very hot, very heavy quilt. I let one of my cousins have it.
There are "double knit scissors"? I just love everything about you and your channel, Miss S. Especially your chaotic, brave and wonderful way of sewing! Thanks for being yourself because she is quite spectacular! Oh, and you have lovely hands...but you knew that, right?
I did so enjoy your squeaking when presented with not enough bobbin thread. I too use the squeak, mostly to describe ages that end in nine. I’m not 40, I’m 30 niiiiiiine?. A very useful technique.
Ah yes, polyester. My grandma bought me a suit set, in the 70’s. Raspberry, it included a blouse, skirt, pants and vest. Looked ok but I was always hot while wearing it. Fine for a chilly third grade classroom but not the playground.
About shortening the sleeve, there is a horizontal line halfway up the pattern. All pattern pieces have a single or double line. That is where you fold the pattern to shorten without distorting the hemline on skirts, pants, and sleeves. It's so easy 😊
Your costume came out great! I do like how you worked with double-knit polyester to keep with the 70s vibe. I live in Florida, so I give you extra kudos for your dedication to providing content by wearing that costume in the heat.
Zoinks! Nicely done! I always seem to make too-hot costumes for my climate, too! Though I feel like to get the full Daphne experience, you need to get kidnapped.
It turned out well, but as a person who sewed and wore double knit in the 70s, I hope you get a cold front there on the days you wear your new costume!
I love that you had the music as vibe and two I was born in 77 so good feeling to know that you youngsters still remember and like Scooby Doo cause I am literally making my smart car for two into mystery machine because I love the cartoon so much but obviouslymy character is Scooby-Doo
That turned out super cute! I've never sewn on polyester double knit myself but my mom used to and she says it was really easy to work with. Maybe not wonderful for wearing outside in Florida, but inside an air-conditioned con it might be great.
I liked the secret scoobys. I remember the first scooby because I'm old. You have to sew negative ease in the double knits. I'm not sure if they were hot to wear or we were just used to wearing them. Your Daphne was pretty spot on..
Bravo ! I have to say even though the fit was great, the stripes really MADE that dress ! It all came together SO well ! Points to you for wearing it in the heat ! 🥵
I’m in Tarpon Springs, Florida, so I feel the double knit heat/scuba comments. However, that costume is outstanding and well worth the use of vintage fabrics. Well done and adorable.
Hola from a former Orlandoan now in Baja Mexico. That outfit looks like a dress my mom made me in orange back in the 70s. My first navy 4 piece suit was double knit from Sears I got for a high school trip to England. Never wrinkled.
I just love you!! Your crazy punch lines make me laugh😊. You are one of my favorite vintage sewist, PERIOD. Plus, you're a very talented sewist!! I am a subscriber. Loved the costume!!❤😊

I play June’s Journey. Have for 6 years. Almost from the inception. It’s a fun game!
Were we supposed to be counting how many Scooby doos we saw? I feel like I missed a game 😂
Same! I came to the comments part way to find out
I found myself asking the same thing at about the 19 minute mark. I'm relieved to know I wasn't the only one!
Geeze, me too! I'm so glad I'm not alone in this! So I didn't actually miss any game instructions...
Glad I didn't back track to count them. I was wondering too.
OMG. Reminds me of sewing costumes for our local Up With People group!! SO. MUCH. POLYESTER.
You had me at "Double Knit Daphne"! The groovy cool music made the creative chaos even better. ZOINKS & JENKIES! You look fab!
I worked at a restaurant chain called Friendly’s in 1984, and our uniforms were all double knit polyester. You could spill ketchup on them and rinse them off with a hose sprayer and there’d be no stain at all. They were super uncomfortable but easy to maintain.
Friendly's! Used to be a great restaurant and great ice cream! 🍦😀
Let me tell you, I have lived away from Friendly's for ten years and I STILL crave their chicken fingers. And their honey mustard.
Velma is my go to secret cosplay when I'm working in office on Halloween and want to dress up on the down low. 😂
Lol I vividly remember that green. Mom and I were gifted a bolt of that when the boys were seriously hooked on teenage mutant ninja turtles. I'm dressing as Velma for Halloween. I thrifted an orange turtleneck sweater, red miniskirt, and orange knee socks. I already have glasses.
I loved this video. Bless June's Journey for carying the entirety of costube on its back for the nth year in a row. This was glorious and I loved the groovy 60s music. :D

Okay, only 6 1/2 minutes in, but I am chuckling away ! Lol.
"Oh, sweet Moses" really got me ! Lol ! Yoinks !
Back to the video!
I feel hot just watching this dress get made. Your bravery wearing this in Florida is much appreciated.

Like, groovy threads, man.

Double knit polyester is the reason why I'm relieved I wasn't born before the 1980s.
As a child from the 70's, I am proof that you can survive. Luckily you can't smell pictures. But they really were wrinkle free.
- Cathy (&, accidently, Steve), Ottawa/Bytown/Pimisi
I was born in the 50s, but refused plastic clothing.
Despite the challenges of the double knit polyester, it looked like you were having a fantastic time in the outfit!! Thank you for making your videos!
I am almost positive that Daphne has pockets, so your dress is accurate there too. thanks to my little sister, we watched A LOT of Scooby Doo growing up
OFC she has pockets, considering her personality I think she'd definitely need them so she could carry at the very least some Chapstick and a little sewing kit to mend her clothes advert all the running she does
She always had a compact mirror on her person so there's pockets for all her gizmos too
I hit peak chaos listening in my headphones to Stephanie look for her pocket pieces while I ran around the house looking for my mislaid phone. Found it and loved the reveal ❤. OMG!!!!! I have ALWAYS hated that polyester!!!!!! Even when I was sewing in the late sixties, I preferred just cotton!!!!
Me too, same era
I refused to wear anything that was polyester double knit. Oh, the horror of wearing it! Besides, that's what my mother wore! Please, just give my bell-bottom jeans and t-shirt! (Well, now, straight-legged jeans, and definitely a cotton t-shirt!)

Even in Alaska, there is a danger of making a too warm cosplay. Those convention centers get hot. 🥵
Funny thing is.... I made this same purple dress (without the lilac stripe) in Home Ec. in 7th grade. Also without the pockets. I loved it but then we all wore scuba fabric in the 70s. Thankfully that was before hot flashes. 😂

Not only do I love the dress, I love how much thought and creativity you add to your videos: the editing…the music choice…perfection!
I’m so grateful I found your corner of the internet!
When I was a little kid, Scooby Doo was a NEW cartoon!😅
lol I was going to say this!
Wow, that's neat! What would you say was the general reaction to Scooby Doo when it first came out?
As someone who was a kid in the late 60s-early 70s and who had to wear polyester double-knit, the only good thing I can say about the stuff is it doesn't fray along the cut edges. My grandmother actually made a quilt from the fabric. A very hot, very heavy quilt. I let one of my cousins have it.
This made me think of my late bff who was also a Scooby Doo nerd and she’d highly approve of this video. She was a redhead and used to cosplay Daphne.
Back in the 70’s our moms wore the double knit pants! We called it bullet proof!😊 it never wore out!
Aside from the discomfort of the fabric, that is fricking adorable!
There are "double knit scissors"?
I just love everything about you and your channel, Miss S. Especially your chaotic, brave and wonderful way of sewing!
Thanks for being yourself because she is quite spectacular!
Oh, and you have lovely hands...but you knew that, right?
Yes! Perfect timing, just woke up( it's 1:30am) and there you are!!
Sinning thread chicken is always so satisfying!
Love the costume! You did a great job.
Loved this episode. I was raised on polyester double knit! My mom was an early stretch and sew teacher…and I was the model for her classes.
I bet the handsome Mr. Canada could make you a nice, smooth extension for the sewing machine...
I admire your commitment. I would die in this costume!I just need to hear the word Polyester and i sweat like crazy!
I did so enjoy your squeaking when presented with not enough bobbin thread. I too use the squeak, mostly to describe ages that end in nine. I’m not 40, I’m 30 niiiiiiine?. A very useful technique.
Music choices on point. Here for it.
Your imagination is beyond wonderful. Also love Daphne and Shaggy etc. What a creation. Thanks for the show!
Ah yes, polyester. My grandma bought me a suit set, in the 70’s. Raspberry, it included a blouse, skirt, pants and vest. Looked ok but I was always hot while wearing it. Fine for a chilly third grade classroom but not the playground.
Mine was lavender. No other students at my school or pant suits😢
What a good Daphne you are. The dress came out great. 😊
That’s the best thing you’ve ever made!!! Though as a child of the 60’s and 70’s, I’ll admit I’m biased.
About shortening the sleeve, there is a horizontal line halfway up the pattern. All pattern pieces have a single or double line. That is where you fold the pattern to shorten without distorting the hemline on skirts, pants, and sleeves. It's so easy 😊

You outdid yourself on this one! Bravo 👏 👏 👏 👏 👏!
Perfect Daphne! I love it! Although Scooby Doo is not old. It could be vintage. I love my OLD cartoons from the 40s forward.
Zoinks! Nicely done!
I always seem to make too-hot costumes for my climate, too!
Though I feel like to get the full Daphne experience, you need to get kidnapped.
All the Decoder Ring listeners have our ears perked up :)
30
Also I love everything about this!!
Absolutely fantastic - I adored the 'olden times' Scooby Doo and you've done the gang proud xx
I actually like double knit polyester ! The dress turned out awesome ! Love it !
That looks amazing!!!!!!!! You give me hope! I sew just like you do and your final products are awesome!
It turned out well, but as a person who sewed and wore double knit in the 70s, I hope you get a cold front there on the days you wear your new costume!
Daphne Squad! Daphne Squad! Daphne Squad! You're a spitting image of her!
You look fabulous! Never in my life could you convince me to wear double knit polyester, but at least you got some solid content out of it. 😅
I love that you had the music as vibe and two I was born in 77 so good feeling to know that you youngsters still remember and like Scooby Doo cause I am literally making my smart car for two into mystery machine because I love the cartoon so much but obviouslymy character is Scooby-Doo
Kings Island!❤❤❤❤
What a fun make!! And the shape of that dress looks really nice on you!
Awesome. I am also a huge SD fan from way back, and have always wanted to cosplay Daphne. Thank you for living my dream, despite the heat!
I love and adore Scooby Doo as it was my favorite cartoon as a child and teen!!!! See we have more in common than ever now!!! Hugs and love💚💚💚
Vintage Scooby Doo was 🔥. Also, I had no idea there was a Hannah Barbara land. Im so jealous that i never got to go
That turned out super cute! I've never sewn on polyester double knit myself but my mom used to and she says it was really easy to work with. Maybe not wonderful for wearing outside in Florida, but inside an air-conditioned con it might be great.

It all came together SO well ! Points to you for wearing it in the heat ! 🥵
That is freakin' awesome! It's- you can't get it any closer to perfect. Ya did good!
I freaking love ScoobyDoo! This video is the best ❤
I was Daphne this year too! Thrifted a dress, extreme closet cosplay vibes.
I want this pattern! Looks great Stephanie!
I’m in Tarpon Springs, Florida, so I feel the double knit heat/scuba comments. However, that costume is outstanding and well worth the use of vintage fabrics. Well done and adorable.
The dress looks awesome and you look so good in it.
That came out so awesome. Which is saying something considering it is double knit polyester.
What a blast from the past!
Well done 👍🏾. Those are my favorite colors
OMGOODNESS!!! That turned out so cute!! LOVE IT!
Awesome job, Stephanie! Happy Halloween!
In the late 80s Sarah Cannon would roll up to our bookstore wearing double knit pantsuits.
You look awesome! I think it turned out fantastic.
Great color for you!!! Love the purple.
Hola from a former Orlandoan now in Baja Mexico. That outfit looks like a dress my mom made me in orange back in the 70s. My first navy 4 piece suit was double knit from Sears I got for a high school trip to England. Never wrinkled.
You look so good! I love how the purples turned out! 💜
I wore polyester double knit and survived!
Oh i love a fun double knit and gave learned the joys of a leisure suit for the fall and winter
It came out fabulously!
I just love you!! Your crazy punch lines make me laugh😊. You are one of my favorite vintage sewist, PERIOD. Plus, you're a very talented sewist!! I am a subscriber. Loved the costume!!❤😊
That main magenta purple is so pretty. However, I was in middle school from 1969 to 1972. I remember those fabrics. The pits.
Your outfit turned out great and you look fab!
That came out very well! Sweet!😊
I remember polyester double knit. And not fondly. I absolutely hated it! That being said, the costume is wonderful, and you look perfect!
You won bobbin chicken!!! Well done, you!
Jinkies, that’s a lot of polyester! Remember to hydrate!
I love it! 😂😂😂 Purple really is your color! 👏👏👏
Awesome; may you get some nice cool weather.
Jinkies you are so adorable!🥰
need a scooby and scrappy doo costume for the floofs
That turned out well, even if it was very warm!
