- I wanted to start 2024 off right by finishing a project I have had laying around for quite some time. The kicker is, this isn't a project that I started! This is someone else's UFO (unfinished object). Re-starting a vintage sewing project is hard enough when it is your own project, wait until you see how I handle sewing up someone else's.

I can still hear my mother's maniacal laughter when I declared that I wanted to make a faux fur vest and hat combo. I was about 15. She had me cut it out in the garage. She showed me how to do it, but she still snickered. A lot. I loved the finished product. But, her laughter was soooooooooo justified. :)

Yes! Why does she want to clean BEFORE she works on fur? So silly! Unless it's just to learn how. lol
the way to cut fake fur is to draw the pattern pieces on the back of the fur and slice through the knitted backing only with a sharp razor blade. you have a really nice machine by the way. love Bernini but I can't afford one

Get an older one. They last a long time! I just got a 30 year old Bernina 2000D serger on ebay and it's working great!
Knitters and crocheters also use UFO terminology. The craft may be different, but the need to start new pretty projects is universal.
We use this in my miniatures group too. I think it's a pretty universal term in the creating communities
I’d love to see a series where a bunch of sewers get together and and get randomly allocated another person in the group who has to then send them one of their UFOs and see what everyone does with the project

Pro tip: make-up brushes are great for cleaning out floofy bits. I also clean my machine using an old very expensive paintbrush I used in college and promptly never had to use ever again.

I use one too is great because the brush is the rigth size and is longer so is more confortable to use
I use big makeup brushes to clean. Helps a lot.
I put zippers in every simple skirt my sister started. Well, added waistbands. Oh yeah hemmed them too. She wore them to school all by herself. She was 4 years older than me.

The sewing machine I'm currently using, I was given, by my Uncle's girlfriend.. it was her Mom's ( she passed and then i think it was stored in the barn, til her Dad passed) It was frozen up as I needed it last minute for a Christmas present I was making .. looked inside and it was so stuffed full of mouse-nest, that gears could not move ! ( thankfully no poop or pee, but a stuffed in nest )
I generally end up making quilt squares out of UFOs but perhaps the fuzzy fabric would not have been the best choice. Shout out to my mother who, 50 years ago, prevented me from turning my wedding dress into quilt squares by installing the zipper for me.. Bless her heart.
That would be a great use for UFO's but yeah, faux fur probably not the best. 😂
I now want a faux fur quilt. I must be mad. And no, I've never sewn with faux fur, so expect much madness if I ever get that idea from my head to reality.
@@Mommamacnz a quilt made out of faux fur scraps (personally, I'm picturing them all irregularly shaped, though squares probably could work too) sounds amazing, but probably a nightmare to sew!
My sewing machine tech told me not to use the brush with the machine as it pushes fluff into the machine rather than removes it. She suggested a real pipe cleaner, not a chenille stick, but the pipe cleaner that has the little barbs on it. This catches the debris and pulls it out.

Yes! I found several of my grandmother's UFOs from the early 1960s, including a zip-back bathing suit (!) and a gingham shirt. I'm going to dig into those babies sometime soon.

Im not a fan of animal prints for clothing but I really like this vest. I love the trim you chose. I have lots of fabric just because I love fabric and trim and inherited my mothers fabric stash too. My Grandmother was a professional seamstress and my mom enjoyed sewing clothes and quilting. I imagine the fun of sewing a lot but never seem to make it a priority even though I have my machine sitting on a desk in plain view of the dining area. I have a few UFOs. One is a cat bed I started for my daughter’s cat 15 years ago. Thinking I should finish that soon 🤦🏽♀️ it was a good reminder to watch this, love your sense of humour.
...I had to grab for my phone. The "He's so fluffy I'm gonna die" is my ringtone for my daughter calling me, and I was only half watching the vid while handstitching!

I worked on a play last year that not only had a highland cow costume, but also 4 hare costumes... I spent several weeks covered in fake fur fluff, first ginger, then white.
I learned that dealing with fake fur while wearing contact lenses is a BIG NOPE, so for people who have the option: wear your glasses instead!
I enjoyed your UFO busting, and it's reminded me of the... ahem... box of UFOs currently sitting in my sewing room (in my defence, I have just moved house, so haven't had much time to sew lately). I'm also trying to finish a crochet UFO from May while watching your back catalogue! So thanks for the help :)

That little silver rod with the flat swirl on it is a seam guide for sewing parallel rows of stitching for quilting or couching. It attaches above the foot and can be pulled to the left to follow your previous row of stitching. You’re welcome.

You make my days with your videos!! I have several UFO's, I will never have as much fun finishing them!
If it helps, I found out after 10 years of owning my first machine and finally upgrading it for other reasons, I realised the tension problems I always had was because I didn't thread it correctly in TWO places the whole time I owned it. xD When I got my new machine, I absolutely read the manual almost completely and also watched many youtube videos for maintenance just to make sure. Though also had issues with that for the first few days, and realised I couldn't use different thread on top from bobbin without the auto-cutter protesting. As least I know how to fully dismantle and reconstruct my new machine now. haha... haaaa..
I wish mine just popped off. I have to mess with all the small screws and my nightmare is that I lose one of them, of course. They are hard to finagle. I do love that I can do it though. And when I take my sewing machine apart and then put it back together it impresses my husband, who is an engineer. That’s probably worth it all.
I use a small jar or Tupperware dish to hold the small fiddly bits when I take my machine apart to clean
You know those magnetic pin cushion bracelets? I've found they work much better for holding onto tiny screws than the tiny silk pins I use 😄
@AllTheHappySquirrels was just going to recommend the magnetic parts dishes - cost 5 bucks, maybe !? (Harbor Freight!)

Well Stephanie you had me rolling on the floor laughing when you were searching for the owner’s manual. It’s almost like you organize your sewing room in the same manner that I do!
If you can believe it, my Mother made me real fur items. One was a red fox ‘helmet’ from one of those vintage fur shawl thingys that invariably had a scary fox head on one end. It was from a maiden aunt …I don’t know what she was thinking sending it to my Mother of seven children who never got to go anywhere! Nonetheless, the red fox was lined with satin and kept my head and chin warm for several winters…up here in Canada where it gets pretty darn cold! I loved it! My Mother also remade+a fur coat into a sort of swing coat that I wore and wore and then donated to Sally Ann …and not two weeks later I saw it on a trendy young lady who thought it was the bees knees! I can’t remember if the old Singer played a big role in both these projects but I am guessing it did!
I don’t know quite how to break this to you, but after sewing the faux fur vest, you will need to ……clean the machine again!
And, if you have never done so, find out exactly where and what you need to add just a drop or two of the best quality sewing machine oil money can buy. Maybe this ‘Bernina Jeff’ fella can help you out. I do hope you realize how lucky you are to have a High quality machine… when my mother gave away her Singer she ended up with a brand that should by all rights have been unceremoniously tossed in the Ottawa River… with a cement block tied around it! She deserved better! So treat your Bernina with the respect it deserves!

The "I don't know what that is" at 4:45 is for making uniformly spaced parallel rows of stitching.
You will find a hole toward the back of your presser foot. The thin rod slips into that and the bit that looks a bit like a foot rides along the stitches (or other design element) that you want to parallel.

Same. But she actually finished the thing in a reasonable amount of time. It took me nearly 3 months to finish a shirt for my husband 😅

I thought it was going to be a bolero. Those of us who knit also have UFOs. Since I do both I have many half finished projects/WIPs I flit between but they mostly get done in months rather than years. I have no sewing/crafting room but instead a large cupboard to store things in and I have just got a bunch of fabric in the Xmas sales. Currently my levels of chaos are probably approaching optimum creativity and creative paralysis simultaneously. Therefore I am watching you whilst eating chocolate whilst washing my haul. I think I will cut out my next project tomorrow instead. I do find your videos so amusing and relaxing.

I only allow myself to have one sewing project and one knitting project at a time because if I give the ADHD an inch it will take a mile and then my whole life will be chaos and that will be bad. It does help me finish things after the dopamine rush goes away, but it takes forever. And then I deal with the creativity paralysis between projects because I need to know I'll want to finish the next project before I start it and there are too many things I want to do...

I just started watching and (bwahahahaha) I can already relate too much. I have a couple auction lots of what was listed as vintage scraps that ended up being mostly someone’s ufo’s from the 20s-40s. I’ve finished a couple but have oh so many left to go. As an aside I have always loved the looks I’ve gotten using ‘ufo’ to describe any of my unfinished projects (sewn, knit, etc.) 😂

Bernina Jeff has answers to practically anything Bernina. You were brave to tackle fake fur and binding. Should you ever decide to make another vest check out the “Burrito method”. Omg. That would be hilarious but once you figure it out it really is easier. Love your sense of humour.

I was given a UFO by my favorite vintage store. It was a jeans to skirt conversion, with 70s Levis. The material used to expand the skirt was terrible so I replaced it with a cute vintage apron I got at the same store. It was so old that the pins that held the fabric in place were rusted and broke to pieces when I touched them...this vest reminds me of my first sewing project when I was a kid. A family friend helped me make a pillow out of fake leopard fur. I think I probably put the stuffing in while she did the rest. When I was older I took the fur and patched some jeans. I still have a little piece of it in my Shrine to Cary Grant. (yes, just casually gonna drop that I have a shrine to Cary Grant in my house...) Trust me it's on brand (Bringing up Baby!)

I love watching your reactions to the processes. Why? Because I usually have the same ones, though more cussing and threatening to throw machines and project out the upstairs windows in my sewing room
To be fair, I do a fair bit of cussing, but remove most for the algorithm.
Two comments if i may: 1. You could add a couple of gold chains across the front for closure for the disco or harem guard look. 2. At the beginning about 0:49 we get a brief glimpse of a bolt of galaxy print blue fabric: what is it and where can I get some of it?
The fabric you saw actually was a deep blue floral brushed polyester that sold out already. But there may be other fabrics coming next week that were in the background of this video... 👀
Nicely done. You could have added a couple of panels to the front using the sleeve fabric as the back fits just fine.

I have one of those. I wanted the shirt pattern. It’s from the 50’s. It came with a partially finished shirt. I don’t know if I can finish it and have my part be as nice as the person that started it. I shall see one day. Mine is very easy to figure out what’s what. It’s cut out well and all the parts are there.
Yeah, you went freestyle!! Lots of sewists past and present do that. You have skills and are gaining more all the time. I think the original person was going to do the same thing. Maybe it’s a hand me down UFO. Cleaning the machine is a basic sewing skill.
Yup this project definitely pushed me farther than I expected it to do.
I only used faux fur once to trim a Christmas stocking for my sister… I texted her every five minutes letting her know I hated her for it. Lol.

My absolute favourite outfit in high school (in the late 90s), was a UFO I bought from the thrift store thinking it was just a bag of fabric. It ended up being a multi-green paisley polyester shift dress, and I adored it
I've done this! Twice now, though, it's been a memorial make, where someone passed away and either couldn't make it anymore or look at it. It's so fun to finish someone else's work though!
My leopard print (100% cotton, woven, flannel) pajamas are trimmed in dark red (or wine). You won that time; however, I would have put it in the trash. I would not ever try to sew fake fur. My fingers get sore sewing quilt cottons. I don't want to find out what sewing fake fur would do to me.

Faux fur isn’t so bad to work with if you cut it from the back and just cut through the backing fabric. Once cut you can trim down the fur in the seam allowance and then use vacuum hose on each piece. Works great. Learned this from a professional teddy bear maker
Many years ago, I decided to make fur topped Christmas stockings. By the time I was done it looked like I had been shaving cats in my small apartments - lots of them (lol).
One of the things I absolutely loved about having Berninas for middle school students was being able to "pop" the throat plate off without unscrewing anything. Made it so much easier to clean out fluff and thread jams. I DID NOT like having bobbin cases because students either put the bobbin in incorrectly or did not put it in the machine correctly, causing needle breakage. Also the bobbin cases had to be collected & counted before students could leave. They were about $40 each to replace. I love my BabyLock, but the throat plate has to be unscrewed to clean around the feed dogs.😥
I think it's more Barney Rubble than Fred Flintstone. And it could be reversible. I like the lining. Fun with Chaos Stephanie!

What the actual forest?! Your sewing machine "manual" is a binder??? Which doesn't kill enough trees to actually explain stuff. Nuh-uh, you'll never take my two old lady Singers away from me - all they take is a little wee green book... That being said, cleaning out and oiling a Featherweight is Daunting. Which may be why I have sewn precisely nothing since the last big project... a whole bunch of months ago... Good for you for the machine cleaning. We're proud of you. Well done.
My Mother's side hussle in the 80's was working the local craft markets selling weaving and, sneeze, "fun" fur stuffed animals. We also owned a dog. And a hamster. Somehow I didn't get allergies. I guess the fluff caught all the pollen? Good luck with the vacuuming.

Ha Ha so reminded me of the time my mother tried to make my toddler a white fur coat, hat and muff for her birthday… she got so frustrated she threw all the pieces in a paper bag and gave it to me to put together… actually turned out darling just glad she didn’t just toss it! 😀

I just discovered your channel and left a long message... for some reason it was "errored". The jist of my message was: Diane Deziel from Canada has high quality rulers for scaling patterns... she has a youtube channel .... I have scaled my old size 6 patterns to 14 or once 16. She really knows what she is doing... made it easy.... love your work.
I don't dislike the vest at the end; it's cute, just not my style. But I watched the beginning just thinking, 'noooo, that's a perfectly good furry sweatshirt. All you need to do is add stretchy cuffs and bottom and finish off the neckline.' I think just finishing off the edges in black would have been adorable.

I am now very very happy with my old machine and its tiny screws on the sewing plate. Also I think that metal thing in the beginning migth be a sewing guide/ruler for when you are sewing far away from the edge of the fabric. I was plenty annoyed sewing velvet, fake fur 'ain't gonna happen' ever

Good job redesigning the ‘fur’ animal print into a vest. Those of us old enough to have had to work with fake fur would have just recycled instead of redesigning that top. Or made a dog toy…nah, we would not know what the thing was made of.
I worked in a very nice fabric store in the early to mid-70s on nights and weekends as a part-time job. Back when you had to bring samples of the clothing you had made and actually wore in order to be reviewed and determine hiring status. We ALL had to sew. No newbys! I had a full-time job during the day. I always hated cutting fake fur! So did everyone else in the store. Since I was part-time, guess who got that job. And the fake fur back then was soaked in formaldehyde in the process of making it. P. U. We always had to clean that remote cutting table afterwards. It was in the upholstery department. Talk about sneezing.

Lol, i usually get other UFO's from people who asked someone to make them something and they received a partially finished project with a "i don't have time anymore" which is generally months after it was started. Nothing better than finding pieces missing or pieces from other UFO's that were put in the wrong pile, lol.
