So I heard that Simplicity launched it’s summer 2024 pattern line this week and the reproduction patterns they chose are not my style, so here is a not complete list of all the vintage patterns I would reproduce if Simplicity would let me help.
From the 1930’s to the 1970’s i think there are some killer vintage sewing patterns that need to be reproduced!

Yes! with plus sizes that already have a full bust adjustment to a D and more! Lets stop drafting almost all patterns to a B cup ffs

And the one thing that they need to do along with the patterns is they need to start reproducing decent fabric. I get that the quilters have kept the fabric people alive for the last 20 odd years but the sewers are having a moment and we need decent fabric with which to make vintage clothing. Because you only have so much and once we buy it all where are we going to get it? 😂

@@allangradus1917 It's funny you think we don't know that. Fabric is already expensive, we see the prices. But believe it or not, there's a real market out there for quality fabric. There are a lot of people sick to death of fast fashion and crappy fabric.
@@sharimeline3077 I don't like the newer fabrics. I buy the vintage ones online or sometimes find them in the thrift stores when I am lucky.

I am so sick of spending money on cheap fabric that rips and pills easily.......I guess thats why I cannot part with my clothes that have the quality fabric ,even if I' not trending with the latest style....I love everyones comments
Someone should send this video to all the big 4 companies. And remind them we want the real patterns, not the miss adjusted that don't fit, reproductions they throw together. Actually get the vintage patterns, make them for more sizes, with the details, and extras. now that's a pattern I wouldn't mind paying your silly over the top prices for. They need to listen to their customers, the people actually making stuff with their patterns, I went to my local fabric store looking for specific foundation garment patterns, they had none of what I was looking for, in any of the pattern books. They are not listening to the customers wants. And JoAnn fabrics, you have more than quilters shopping your stores, get more fabrics for foundation garments, and vintage clothing. a small section in your store would be popular. sell everything from bra making to the stuff for the details in the patterns we want. including wider horse hair braid. This would get you out of your financial issues . Don't be like the HL store that is now Home Decor and more without the name change. sorry for the rant just my little soap box

OMG! Just stopped at a garage sale and bought a suitcase of vintage patterns, including some that are in your video! My life is complete.
The Gunne Sax line!!! OMG!!! YES!!! Bring it back!!! I would love this! Even the more modest swimwear stuff, so many good choices in this selection. Thank you Stephanie for compiling this, I hope someone listens to you as someone who knows something of what people want.
Especially if they could put out the swimsuits and rompers with proper lengthening/shortening lines, and instructions on how to measure and know what you need. I added 3½" to the rise on one pattern, and it _fit._
Please make Gunne Sax size inclusive to at least size 32!!!

My graduation dress was a Gunne sax 1976 and I have never seen any picture or pattern or anything that looks anything like mine. There was no lace. It didn’t go all the way to the floor. It was kind of a off-white cotton with smocking on the front bust like little girl dresses and it had puffy sleeves, and the trim and smocking were red, a medium greenish turquoise, and yellow.
My prom dress in 82 was Gunne Sax that I made from a pattern that funny 2 of my friends also made theirs. ❤ We each changed the pattern to fit our different body shapes and sizes.
My mother gave me a book called Sewing Made Easy in the late 60. The book was from the 50s and had an entire section on accessories for changing the look of a basic dress.
The Wearing History blog has just put a free downloadable copy of "Home Sewing is Easy" on their site.

gummy sax dresses and patterns were originally made for the junior body (😅read no breasts) type if they were to reproduce them they need to do women body types, including plus size
I guess I need to revisit simplicity. I have always hated simplicity because the styles are too easy. I really prefer vogue just because it's one step up from the basic stuff and I know that many people like the basic stuff because they're learning to sew. it's all good.
How I hope and pray that 'someone' in the Pattern-Making industry is actually watching AND LISTENING to our Pleas!
Not just listening, but, actually acting on it.....
If they do decide to hire Stephanie, she cannot do reproductions in one day.
She will have to put it in her contract that:
-they use an ORIGINAL pattern to grade, and:
-they avoid using a CAD machine to do the mathematical conversion/size downgrades/size upgrades from the founding patterns used:

That they also use a experienced human to cut the sample graded patterns, as well as the reproduction graphics, markings, and typefaces from the early 60's ( as they are a lot easier to understand than their computerized brethren: also, my st people worldwide-not just here in the U.S.-have either a visual impairment, or are over 50[census bureau], so, this is necessary).......
I’m so glad that my grandmother’s vintage pattern collection is mostly intact and while not factory folded, they have pretty much all of the pieces and sizes kept…she was never over 5’ with hair fluffed and shoes on…and had a DDD chest before graduating high school. Patterns got traced and adjusted instead of buying a new pattern for every person she sewed for. I inherited both her love of sewing and a somewhat problematic figure so have continued keeping patterns intact.
For anyone who loves sewing vintage style clothes, I highly recommend taking a pattern drafting class even if it’s just via online videos. Sooooooo many of the older patterns have the pattern pieces in silhouette on the back of the envelope. I’d have to completely redraft the pattern anyway so that’s more than enough info since I usually ignore the written directions anyway.
I agree so much with this whole video. I think they just found some old patterns in a basement box and called it a day. We want pintucks, wrap dresses, sleeves, flutter shorts, coats, menswear, combo house dress/day dresses, ballgowns! I mean come on, Simplicity, take our money!

as a short girl (4'10"), by the time I shortened a pair of bell bottoms, they no longer had a bell. that's when my sewing life began.
Back in the 70s, there were whole stores devoted to bell bottoms with the most beautiful embroidery work on the side panels. But if you cut them for hemming (5'2"), you lost most, if not all, of the embroidery work. My 5'11" friend was in heaven, as she could actually get pants that didn't look like pedal pushers on her.
5’1.5” lady here. Oh the massive amount of hemming I did in the 70s. There weren’t a lot of RTW petite pants in the stores. There was a great petites’ store called 5-7-9. Alas, they’re gone.

I loved Simplicity patterns back in the day. I started sewing in the 70's, and found Simplicity to be the best choice for me and my skills. And when I made my prom dress in 1981, it was a Princess Diana wedding dress-inspired gown by Simplicity. With giant sleeves. Anyway, I'm really here to say WHYYYYY have they not picked up on the Gunne Sax trend? How much money have they already lost by dragging their feet on this?
Speaking as one of the mensfolk, I for one would love to have more vintage patterns.

Yes! Yes to all of these. Every single one. These companies are sitting on literal gold mines... have they seen the bidding wars on ebay?!? Do they not understand that modern patterns are not only boring but are generally and uniquely unflattering - I am not a box, stop dressing me like one. Size inclusive, properly redone vintage reprints that actually end up being something that looks like the illustration. All we're asking for. That and Gunny Sax dresses. That's an itch that is begging to be scratched. To the tune of these LLC's being able to keep the name of the company alive...

Yes! I totally agree with you on all of it!!! I used to sew alot of our clothes. I made the baby stuff, toddler stuff, and the mens stuff too. I sewed some really good plaid flannel shirts for my husband. I had a 1970's pattern for a western style shirt that I made him with the pearl snaps and satin trim. He had three dress shirts like this that lasted forever. I even made him a velvet with satin lapels suit coat in black. Snazzy!! I have hung on to a few of these things as they were his favorites. Mostly I have sewed for me.(of coarse). But all of those Halloween costumes were our favorites! Your imagination is the limit with sewing. Come on bring these back!! Have a great week!!
My mother used patterns to make my Halloween costumes in the 60's. Inspiring me to draft and thrift my children's costumes. And my children to design and thrift theirs.

ideal thing they should do is make a questionnaire for the sewing peeps. Specifically about which reproductions they should do.
Knowing the most popular era or most asked for pattern would do wonders.
If they send it out to fashion history youtubers they would immediately get straight to their target audience.
I also say this as someone who drafts my own patterns. I only started buying patterns once I realised the old ones I like are available on stores like Stephanie's and on etsy (love you downloadable patterns).

OMG I made a bubble skirt in 6th grade I think for a 4-h sewing class. I loved it! I still think about that skirt!
I’m there with you, especially the ‘housecoat/dress’. I’ve been sewing for over 55 years, my gran taught me. She made her own suits. I have a few of her original patterns! LASTLY…YES TO THE GUNNE SAX! I had 4 dressses back in the 70s. Even my 1980 prom dress!

I love all fashion eras really, but I think my favorite is the 30's. I just love bias cut dresses and those sleeves. Everything flowing and elegant, it's just so pretty.

I once had a men's pirate shirt pattern from the 80s pass from my possession...that one still haunts me.
OMG! Candy stripe sun set, with candy bag pockets AND a Bonnet!! They'd probably never produce it in my size but I'd sew it up for anyone who asked me to, just for the fun of it.
Those are patterns from my teens. We called them elephant pants--the legs were THAT wide. My grandmother (born 1905) gave me her black satin lounging pajamas. They looked exactly like the pair on the far left.
I do have two newish patterns that give me that high waisted 40s feel --Butterick 5859, and Spanish cowboy vibe--McCall's 5185, that might appeal to some.
And yes, I wear beach pajamas too. Otherwise I'd be red not white. 😁

I was out for a drive today and found myself in west Olympia. I stopped into that little junk store where you found so many patterns. Such nice people there, but alas, no new patterns have materialized on their shelves.
Reminder about vintage swimwear (I was there) many had zippers and very little stretch. Fashionable, yes, but great for swimming? Maybe not my first choice.
I wish they would bring back those jiffy patterns with the 2 or 3 pattern pieces! They weren’t just simple bit so so stylish.

I work from home. I have been hunting down and buying up the house coat / dress patterns and finally this weekend will begin to make them. The brands need to make them and. And make them accurately. Because I want to strut down my staircase in a flowing silk house dress to get my mail.

OHG in 1976-77 I had a pair of yellow elephant bell pants. I was 4'11' and 80lbs soaking wet. Those bells wrapped themselves around my legs every step I took.
1971 gray corduroy elephant bells and a white gray and black Jesus tee. My favorite outfit. I was in 7th grade. Loved them. The hid my shoes as I walked. I think of them when I think of bell-bottoms.
I loved my Betsy Johnson elephant bells, but a more modest bell is a better cut for me.

1930s Beach Pajamas are the best styles ever! Big, breezy legs. Interesting seam details. Pockets. And loads more comfortable than a plain old jumpsuit. Plus the patterns cover both 1- and 2-piece outfits. Add 1930s sandals and a huuuuuuge brimmed sun hat - divine!
What a concept, listen to someone who actually deals in vintage patterns, and not just a person with a marketing/ business degree. Real life experience for the win. Thank you for keeping the vintage patterns around.
Okay, so this is the mid-60s, but my very first clothing purchase on my own as a teenager was a bandstand skirt and a boatneck blouse. So cool….but my mother made me return them😭😭😭. I’ve never forgotten those styles and would definitely rock them as an almost 80-year-old if there were patterns.
well, I jumped in, at 63 I sewed an apron, without a pattern no less....I want those cross back kind, I watched several videos, drew up something tried to fit it to me, I wanted light weight denim so it was cool but tough....I wanted the edges to ravel, cause it's cool, and I am again attempting to embroidery again, not since I was 12. Using the apron to relearn the stitches....so far my apron is bright, kooky and all me...still embroidering the pretty part....I may try to take a photo and email it to you....enjoy your channel....

You are correct - “elephant bells” was what we called the very very wide bell bottoms. And surely there’s a true “skort” pattern out there with pockets? I think the skort had a side zipper? Or just an elastic waist….

Yes to the Gunne Sax. It would be fabulous if they had the sizes that included us bigger ladies too. It’s a pain when you buy the largest pattern available and still have to add inches.

A friend of mine and I bought matching elephant pants in probably 1972. They were a fine whale corduroy, navy with small, white dots. hip huggers with a built-in belt/waistband.

Hat patterns. ABSOLUTELY
Many of the pattern companies could benefit by following a different sales model. For one thing never discontinue a pattern (yes update sizing etc) but make all patterns available as PDF or print on demand. That alone would drastically reduce overhead. I know that if makeup brands can do eyeshadow palettes on demand instead of making a huge amount of them then for sure pattern companies can do the same. This would allow any pattern to be available at any time. Can you imagine how amazing that would be??

Gunnie Sack oh Yes! I made one and I made the alteration’s because it was not size inclusive. People asked where did I get my dress and I said I made it. I was in jr high school. I made all of my special dresses.

during the 1980s I used Gunne Saxe patterns for square dance dress bodices - they were great patterns if you were small enough to be able to use them.
I loved the two pieces (skirt with matching top) dresses of the late 1960's. Doris Day wore some of the cutest two piece suit/dresses in many of her movies. What happened to the A line, true full back wrap golf skirt (with the pork chop pockets on the front) of the late 1950's. There was enough fabric in the two full back panels that you didn't have to worry about being exposed by the wind.
Capes, swing coats, caplets with the dress. Hats too.the pattern at 12:44, top left I made that one, 4255. The top is soooo good. I made the pants too, cute as heck.
I think my biggest beef with the vintage patterns I see in second hand stores, or even my Mom's sewing box, iS I can't reinterpret those drawings to what the pattern would look like on a normal person, in my head! Which is so weird, considering the actual vintage dresses, I have got to own and wear, were so perfectly built for real women.
Yes! Yes! Yes! to all these reproduction requests. Simplicity needs to realize how many of us would buy patterns if they would start selling patterns like these. I loved all your choices, keep up the good work and perhaps someday they will actually listen.
How about a bubble skirt that bubbles into a pair of shorts underneath? You would pull the shorts on that are attached to the bottom of the skirt, then slip the dress on and zip up the back.

In the seventies I had elephant pants . That pattern was so versatile! It had work appropriate pants, shorts, palazzo pants. I made it in a dozen different ways and fabrics! And Gunne Saxs yep I had those too. I kept all my patterns but those papers didn't survive a roof fire where my ground floor apartment was inundated with a foot of water and collapsed ceiling. They turned to papermache....

Yes! All the nightgowns since all the mass produced chain and department store collections are now polyester crap! I would love to see reproductions of the Lanz of Salzburg (published by McCall's) sleepwear... with a line of natural-fiber fabrics.

This is the first time I've seen a vintage pattern you present be one I actually own and have sewn hundreds of times. Simplicity 5310 is a go to favorite of mine, and one my mother used to teach me how to sew. I recently pulled it out again and made the skirt for an event back in March where the theme was "through the decades." It was a huge hit among the other attendees, especially when I mentioned I had made it using the original pattern. The only downside to my pattern is the fact the blouse was my mother's favorite to make and the pieces have disappeared over the years. I have copies of the pants and skirt pieces so I don't lose the originals.
And yes I rocked a pair of the elephant bell pants in a fuchsia and cobalt hibiscus print through middle and into high school. I made them for 4-H and refused to let anyone tell me they weren't fashion.
I see some of the patterns that I own and themes of ones that I have on my desk for my next several projects. Yes to all of these especially wrap dresses, playsuits for women, pinafore dresses with ruffles and pockets that could fit a baby in them!

I love the Navy dress look! When I was about 4-5 my sister and I had matching Navy dresses, hers had red trim, mine blue. Mom hated them because they were white 100% cotton that acted like 100% cotton. I loved it so much.

Funny thing about the nightgown/daydress pattern: I have this fabulous "budgeting" book from 1937 (Orchids on Your Budget by Marjorie Hillis) that recommends something similar.
