- The Atari 7800+ has been announced, following closely in the footsteps of the recent Atari 2600+. Much like its predecessor, this console offers HDMI output, Atari 2600 and Atari 7800 cartridge compatibility, and a few modern tweaks. But with so many similarities, it’s hard not to see this as a bit of a cash grab aimed at nostalgic gamers. In this video, I’ll quickly dive into what the Atari 7800+ offers, how it stacks up to the 2600+, and whether it’s really worth your time or just a rehash of the same formula.

Well, with many consoles, conpanies release limited editions and different colored shells. Atari went the extra step and made a shell for us who are more nostalgic to the 7800. Cashgrab or not, it makes business sense. :) Theres people like me who held out on the 2600+ for something like this. Atari listened, its a big win for me. 🎉
Absolutely!
I pre-ordered it and have a 2600+ and many iterations of OG hardware. I remember when the 2600+ came out, many folks remarked, "Why didn't they just do a 7800+?" Now they do a 7800+, and some of those same folks are calling it a redundant cash grab. For me, it's just another way to play the games I love with an esthetic I prefer over woodgrain. Choice isn't a bad thing.
Also, it will release with the most recent firmware. Both 2600 and 7800 compatibility are much improved - with the 7800 side only having issues with one homebrew that has a custom sound chip (Rikki & Vikki).
It does feel kind of redundant with so little changes . I’m glad it’s gonna release with the most recent firmware. honestly, though, if someone offered me an even up trade for a 7800+ for a 2600+ I would probably take that trade because I’m not the hugest fan of the woodgrain. I even have the Onyx Atari VCS. To me, I think it would’ve made way more sense if both of them released at the same time. The reason it feels like a cash grab for a lot of people I think it’s because of how little time has passed between the two and how few of changes there are. I’m glad the firmware though has come along way and of course that’s a huge upside.
I am going to get this one. I am glad I waited on the 2600+.
Yeah, if you didn’t know to get the 2600+ it makes more sense to get this honestly.
It is odd that they skipped the 5200. I wonder why they don't release a system that plays 2600, 5200, and 7800.
That really would be something to see them release the ultimate classic Atari machine. It could use two slots just like an Evercade VS.
Cubbies fan too?!? Same! And I’m getting this because I didn’t get the 2600+ and I think the 7800+ looks better and I love the wireless controllers with this 🤷🏼♂️
Yeah, my wife is a Cubs fan and I’m a Sox fan , but I root for both teams , except when they’re playing each other. It’s been a very hard year to be a Sox fan. This might be a hot take but the place I enjoy going to see them play the most is Milwaukee. I’ve discovered milk. Going to Milwaukee isn’t a whole lot farther than going to Chicago from where I’m at.
Yeah, I’m not gonna lie, if someone wanted to trade me a 2600+ for a 7800+ even up I’d probably take that trade. It’s a good looking system.
@@PKInTheUniverse yeah I used to go to the old county stadium, I don’t mind Milwaukee 🤷🏼♂️
@@PKInTheUniverse yeah it caught my eye and the free copy of Bentley Bear crystal quest is pretty great too!
It's a good option if you connect more with the 7800 and passed on the 2600+. I've got a feeling that if a 5200 was to be released it'd be by Retro Games Ltd because they've already released The400 Mini which is compatible with 5200 games. Keep up the awesome work PK!
Good point! Thanks man !
Where would you buy the software for the 5200? They didn't make millions of copies like they did for the 2600. I mean they are out there but it a much tighter market.
@@SoulforSale Retro Games reproduction consoles always ship with inbuilt games and you can "bring your own". I suspect it wouldn't accept cartridges.
@@jayme69 I suspect it will
@@SoulforSale That's not Retro Games Ltd's MO. If there's a cartridge based 5200, Atari will make it.
I already have the 2600+ so I'm good. I'm just waiting on the official update for it.
I definitely should update my 2600+
Agreed. I love what Atari is doing these days but it's a hard pass for me on that one. I'm sure it'll sell like hotcakes though.
Absolutely! It’s a cool idea, but not really for me.
They are not going anywhere.
Your favorite mini is coming up.
Nice sunglasses!
Thanks! 😊
After recently purchasing a 2600+ a few month's ago just so I can play my 7800 games on a HD telly. This upcoming system has no interest for me. I can already play my 7800 cartridges on the 2600+ and that is more than fine to me. I've never had that fear of missing out mentality when it comes to games. And I'm certainly not the kind of gamer who has to have every variant of a console and handheld. The evercade being an example of that. I already have the original, the VS and the EXP. I don't need to get the super pockets and I especially don't want the upcoming alphas.
I know what you mean. I have the OG, VS and SP And have no interest in the EXP or the alphas. This feels like it’s for hard-core Atari fans or people who didn’t even get the 2600+ to begin with. If I bought something like this, it would be buying it for the sake of buying it.
@@PKInTheUniverse indeed matey it'd be a purchase just for the sake of it. I only would of bought it if I didn't already buy the 2600+
Up graded chip-set
Current firmware
This will sell like hot-cakes.
A welcome revision.
The 5200, Jaguar et al are too niche
All this stuff is niche
Lol it went from not letting me like the video to going up two likes. RUclips is silly
Idk anything about Atari but still, cool to hear you talk. Sorry I've been mia. It's been really tough keeping appearances, applying for jobs, working, and keeping the lady happy.. lol. I do NOT know how you do all of this with two kiddos. Impressive
No don’t criticise Atari, you’ll make him mad 😂
There’s a line out the door I’m sure of people I make mad on any given day. 🤣
@@PKInTheUniverse yeah same
I'll just use my 2600+
Same
i play all atari on pc .. emulator..i have old atari console. iam not buying their crap now

emulation is close.
but never perfect.
I love the 7800 but I will not be buying this.
Yeah, just doesn’t seem worth it
If a Jaguar+ is announced...maybe.
I might want a Lynx +
I want a Stunt Cycle+.
