I love mine so much. Didn’t grow up with the 2600 and 7800 (born in ‘96), but I’m totally starting to understand why this console is so well loved. These are the only type of games that have been able to hold my attention lately with how fast paced and arcade-like they are. This idea of reissuing retro stuff in current times is something I seriously hope becomes more common. P.S. If you play your 2600+ as much as I do, I recommend upgrading to the newest custom firmware. It increases the compatibility to make it pretty much 99.9% of all the games playable, homebrew too. 🙂
I developed a special multi cart for the 2600+ and it can play home brew or any other game. The trick is making it think it's a real cart by hiding everything from it except the rom....
Having cartridges is always better than sd cards, now down to the 2600+, love the HDMI connection, love usb power, love how it accepts all of the old controllers, love how it accepts all most all of the 2600 games, love how it accepts all most all of the 7800 games, and love how they are releasing cartridges, now down side would have been great if it was orginal size and had all the 6 switches on the front, so when playing space shuttle you can use the overlay on the system , maybe release this game again with a new overlay, got burned because they release the 7800+ now .
I have an original woody and a CRT but picked the plus up just recently. Lovely warm image on the original with a CRT when it's tuned in correctly but the 2600+ ,makes its games far easier to enjoy and crystal clean on a modern TV. The only wrinkle is that the paddle controller isn't as smooth on the plus than it is on the original hardware when playing Kaboom! and Super Breakout. It's a splendid console.
I actually prefer using proper cartridges as opposed to an SD card- inserting a cartridge gives you that genuine tactile experience that we had as kids playing this system. Playing roms off an SD card takes away from that experience. The whole point of the 2600+ is that it is a faithful recreation of the original. Adding an SD slot makes it less genuine. And I have so much more fun going to retro game stores, toy conventions etc and hunting for new games. Always makes me happy when I happen to find a new game to try.
The Atari VCS (a.k.a. The AtariBox) was $99. I got that. Going to upgrade it, install Windows 10, and that thing is going to be nice. Small PC, possibly to where I can just plug in a USB 3.0 SSD and switch to Linux as well.
can I use my Sega Megadrive controllers on the Atari 2600 Plus, since the original console can allow you to do that use Sega Controllers on Atari consoles
Are they ever going to update the games to match the new monitor / TV resolution? The games were always fun, but the 8-bit graphics were the best they could do - way back then. Like they say - that was then, this is now. They should use the same plots, characters and items for the games but remake them for at least 1080p (32-bit? 64-bit?!)
It's been done many times. There is the recharged series, which are modernized versions of classic Atari games, and then there are more than 40 newly released games on steam and on their website.
I use an S-video modded Atari 7800 with a retrotink 2x pro because I do not like that the 2600+ has problems with 7800 homebrew games, Using the indy 500 controller, being finicky about running games, not being able to use a harmony or concerto cartridge, and I dont like that it has load times.
Everyone else is talking about the 400 Mini, and then there's this guy going on about the 2600+ 😝

Im still running an original 1980 Sears light sixer, and a 1978 Heavy Sixer I just restored. Pretty happy with those two.

Yeah, I would've preferred it to have been the 6-switcher VCS instead. I guess most people know it as the 2600

This is very cool MGG. Sadly I only have my 2600 jr with the same RF output. This new console is very tempting indeed.

If they made a universal cartridge that takes the sd card? I see that happening. and one that acted as a converter for Colecovision games?
Atari and coleco can get small ports you can install to allow HDMI ports on them just need to look around

It plays 7800 games too so your comment that it really isn't much different is completely flawed.
Nintendo should honestly be making notes. Cause i would 100% buy a modern nes,snes,n64 or GameCube with hdmi
I think the question should be how well does the 2600 itself hold up cause I’d say not very well
