Elvis once said of Roy Orbison that he thought Roy Orbison had the best singing voice he had ever heard.

Roy wrote " Only The Lonely " for Elvis but, Elvis said; Roy there's no way I can this song like you can, you need to record this song so, he did! He wouldn't let anyone else have the song! He and Elvis were close friend's! Roy was one of the GREATS, his fan's call him Big O. He was Elvis' favorite singer. They ask Elvis once what it felt like to be the GREATEST singer in the world, he said; IDK you need to ask Roy Orbison!

Roy was NOT blind, but he did need his glasses to see. While on tour in the U.K. he had left his regular glasses on a plane but still had his dark glasses with him. When he got off the plane everyone in England was taking pictures of him with the dark glasses and he decided to keep wearing them. His sons wrote a book about it, " The Authorized Roy Orbison."

    • @richdiddens4059

He also kept wearing them because he had near terminal stage fright. For a long time he barely moved on stage because of it. On of the greatest voices ever.

There are also interviews with Roy on RUclips, explaining the story. A short, audio only, one is titled "Orbison, Roy TV Interview", posted on the Marty Sinclair channel (wish I could post the link, but RUclips seems to be deleting some posts with links). He left his clear glasses on the plane in AL, had to fly to NY the next day, on to Europe, to tour with the Beatles. The tour was huge, with photos seen all over the world, so as Roy said, "I was sort of stuck. Instant Image." I've never heard him (or anyone who knew him) give any other reason (such as stage fright) for wearing them.

@@HemlockRidge Roy was not legally blind (nor "light sensitive", as some people post). He did multiple interviews over the years saying so. In one, titled; Interview Roy Orbison on “Good Morning Britain”, posted Dec. 11, 1987, he addresses it twice. At 3:30 he tells the story of the sunglasses. The interviewer says “There’s nothing wrong with your eyes, though” he replies “I need corrective lenses, but they don’t need to be dark.” At 6:36 he was again asked if there was anything wrong with his eyes. He said “no, I see quite well. I am a bit far sighted.” Roy just needed regular old corrective lenses, like millions of people.

Roy had one of the most tragic lives you will ever hear of.
"In 1966 tragedy struck when (wife) Claudette Orbison was killed in a motorcycle accident, with Roy riding just ahead of her when it happened. He found it difficult to write any more songs, but he kept touring. Two years later, a fire destroyed his house in Hendersonville, Tennessee, killing two of his three children. From that point on, he refused to attend funerals." Rolling Stone

Fun Fact: at one point Roy, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins, and Elvis were all part of tiny little Sun Records in Memphis. There is an album called “The Million Dollar Quartet” which was Johnny, Jerry Lee, Carl, and Elvis. They all were in the studio at the same time (by coincidence, only Carl was supposed to be recording that day) and began singing and playing around, being silly together. It’s just an incredible look into the past and we only have it because Sam Phillips was smart enough to realize how special it was to have those four in studio together and recorded them.

Roy initially started wearing sunglasses onstage because the stage lights were so bright. Fun fact: When Elvis was just starting to get big in the 50s, you could book him to play a show for $100 a night. A concert promoter in Texas hired him to play five different cities in Texas in one week for $500. During that week, in two different cities, two unknown teenagers named Roy Orbison and Buddy Holly saw Elvis and decided that's what they wanted to do with their lives. So we owe Elvis, and that promoter, an incredible wealth of music. Roy, sadly, died at 52 when he was just starting to make a comeback with the MTV generation. No one sang about loneliness like Roy. Check out "Crying", "Blue Bayou", "In Dreams" or "Only The Lonely". Roy was a rock icon.

" People, even now, think Roy Orbison was blind.
He wasn't! He began wearing his trademark dark glasses in 1963, just before a British tour with The Beatles.
Speaking years later about his dark glasses and clothes, Orbison said: "I wasn't trying to be weird, you know? I didn't have a manager who told me to dress or how to present myself or anything. But the image developed of a man of mystery and a quiet man in black somewhat of a recluse, although I never was, really."

Notice how the band is dressed. Up until the mid 1960s bands were always well dressed but then times began to change. Sonny and Cher were the first act I seen where they were not dressed up and then Paul Revere and the Raiders started wearing costumes. At some point the bands just started wearing street clothes. I grew up in the 1950s and 1960s and this was my music.

One of the musicians that Roy collaborated with as a member of the Traveling Wilburys was Jeff Lynne, the lead singer and driving force of the Electric Light Orchestra (ELO). They have a massive rabbit hole worth of songs to uncover. You can start with "Roll Over Beethoven" "Evil Woman" and "Mr. Blue Sky" and you'll get a ton of more suggestions along the way.

He other Beatles met Roy Orbison 1st time when Roy asked by Beatles' manager, Brian Epstein. If he can tour with the Beatles? Roy didn't know about the Beatles, but they knew him because he was one of greatest their idols. Roy was definitely one of the pioneers in Rock History. Someone mentioned about Million Dollar Quartet, and years later, Roy joined another Million Dollars Band called The Traveling Wilburys. The Traveling Wilburys were consisted of Roy Orbison, ELO's Jeff Lynne, Tom Petty, Beatles' George Harrison and Bob Dylan.

Try his songs "Only The Lonely", "Leah", "Uptown", "Blue Bayou", "Workin' For The Man", "Blue Angel", "Pretty Paper", "Ooby Dooby" and so many others. He wasn't blind at all. He wore the dark glasses as he was very shy in person and it was his coping mechanism...like a security blanket.

Hey Shawn and Mel, Im Ashley and Im a big fan of yalls channel and I love yalls love connection. You can see how much you love and adore one another. Yall remind me of my hubby Justin and I. My husband and I have been together for 19 years now. But we were just friends and co workers for the first two years when we met on the job and I was 16 years old back in early 2003. He was almost 7 years older than me and one of my bosses. I had already gotten my GED and had been in homeschooling and I was working full time 40+ hours a week same schedule as him. Most people thought I was 21 years old because I looked older than my age, I had always dressed more like a college student than a teenager. I grew up so fast and had alot of responsibility on my shoulders and I didn't act like other teens. I tried to date guys my age but they were so silly and immature and not always respectful. My mother gave me the blessing to date guys sometimes 4 years older than me cause they treated me a thousand times better than some silly 16 year old boy. I was not looking for some spring fancy or summer romance. I was always ready to commit to the right man and be a wife. I didn't have any wild oats to sow. But I wanted to find a man who was a good gentleman and shared my same faith and was respectful to me and we shared a lot in common and were each other's best friend. And I ended up finding everything and more in my guy best friend and coworker who happened to be one of my bosses. He had been divorced for 3 years because his wife of one year cheated on him and got pregnant by another man's baby. You could sort of say that he had trust issues and just never dated and only focused on work. When I started working there he felt an instant connection with me. We had so much in common including our faith and how much we loved or heavenly Father. We had the same taste in music, movies and the literature. And I come to think of him as a great best friend. Now I did date some during this time. And I even got engaged when I was 17. And just weeks before I was supposed to say I do, I found out my fiance was cheating on me. I was hurt obviously but I think I wasn't as hurt as I should have been. I had cared for the man and loved him in my own way but I wasn't exactly head over heels in love with him. And he knew that and was okay with that. I thought that our love would grow more strongly over time. I didn't expect to ever experience the kind of love that could compare to a fairy tale. But months after my engagement was cut off I did start to see that I was starting to have growing feelings for my best friend. And I just never allowed them to grow because I was always very faithful to any boyfriend I had in the past. I would not allow myself to entertain thoughts of anyone else when I was with someone because I'm very much against cheating. I would not ever want anyone to do that to me and I would not want to do that to someone either. But fast forward several months my feelings for my best friend at work started to grow even stronger. And before I knew it I had fallen in love with him. But I never dared to let him know because I knew he had been hurt in the past and I knew that he had not dated since his divorce 5 years ago. Little did I know he had fallen in love with me and been in love with me for one year already. And he was patiently waiting for me to turn 18 and tell me that he had feelings for me. It was always the perfect gentleman and he never let me know that he was in love with me. I had no idea that when I was engaged back then that he was in love with me. But he didn't say anything because we didn't think that I could ever feel the same way and then I got engaged and he didn't want to take away any chance I had for happiness. But when I became single he had hope that there would possibly be a chance in the future that he would get to tell me how he fell. But it required patience on his part because I was still 17 and liked a few more months turning 18. But sometimes he would join me and my mother for lunch on our break when she was in town and it didn't take long for her to realize that we were secretly in love but not say anything about it. My mother absolutely adored Justin and thought he was an amazing man and could tell that he really did love me more than just a friend. So she pulled him aside one day and had a heart to heart conversation with him, And she asked him if he had feelings for me and he was honest with her and told her that he was in love with me but he respected my age and didn't have any problem with waiting for me to turn 18. My mother said that I've practically been an adult since I was 14 years old. I've taken care of her And also my grandmother during times when their health was failing them. I never really got into any trouble And my teen years because I was so mature and obedient to my mother who I was very close to. So that meant she gave me a lot more freedom than what other teenagers got because I never once broke her trust. But even then I did not take for granted any freedom she gave me. My mother knew that she had raised me to be streetwise and have good judgment. And she trusted me and understood that I needed a more mature partner and someone who would treat me with respect and be good to me. And she could see Justin being that man. And all my mother wanted was for me to be happy. And so she gave Justin her blessing for him to ask me out. After all I was fixing to turn 18 years old in less than 2 months. And so he did ask me out the next day and we've been together ever since February of 2005. And we got married in December 2006 when I was 19 years old and he was 26. Our age difference never bothered us once. And everyone in our family and at work was overjoyed for us being together because they could see we were perfectly matched for one another. And I count myself truly blessed to have found such a good man who happened to be my best friend for 2 years prior, so by the time we started to date we were already in a serious committed relationship because both of us have been in love with one another for some time now. He didn't try to rush me into marriage but he made his intentions clear that he did want to marry me but he wanted to give me time and let me decide when I was ready. So that's what we did.
I had my mother and my grandmother walked me down aisle on our wedding day, since they were the ones who raised me. They didn't mind me being a teenage bride. They themselves married when they were 17 years old and their husbands was in their twenties also. And here in the south, I had several friends who were already married that got married when they were 17 years old and some of their husbands were around 4 years older than them. So it's pretty common you could say.
Now I'm 37 years old and my husband is 44 and we are still very much in love. We bring out the best in one another and we encourage one another to have a deeper intimate relationship with God as well. And it has made our marriage stronger. I always wanted to have a good God-fearing man who knew how to treat women respectfully. And I could not ask for a better husband. We have always been faithful, honest and loyal to one another.
He is one of the funniest guys I know. And he is playful. Not to mention handsome. He has blue eyes and blonde hair and is 6'3 tall and people say he looks like Nick Carter from the Backstreet Boys.
He also knows how much I love this song and how much I love the movie Pretty Woman. Also have a little bit of an obsession with vampires so the growling has definitely been introduced in our marriage for sure you could say. I think the GROWL worked for women back then just as much as it works for some women now. I tell some guys that they should definitely practice it and try it on their special lady. If she's anything like me she will get a kick out of it.
It always makes me blush and get tickled and feel flattered whenever my hubby growls and says, "Come here baby".
It's not on a every day basis but it does happen occasionally.
This December is our 18 the wedding anniversary. I certainly expect some growling and loving for sure! 😅😂
We certainly have no problem keeping the passion in our marriage burning for one another.

I cried listening to this, because my Dad & i would listen to 60's music nearly every day when I lived with my parents, this summer, to help my mom take care of my Dad. Dad had been diagnosed with Brain Cancer. I'd dance, holding my Dad's hand, to his favorites, even when he was unable to leave his bed. My Dad passed away in September. Even tho it made me cry~ I thank you for reacting to Roy!!
    Thank you,
    ~Jenn

Roy accidentally left his clear glasses on the plane when he was starting a tour in England and all he had was his sunglasses. He just ended up always wearing them because he liked the look. They became part of his trademark. You should check out his work in The Traveling Wilburys and his last hit, You Got It. He died way too young, at 52. There is a story, don't know if it is true or not, that Elvis was asked what it was like to have the best voice in rock and roll. He said, I don't know, ask Roy Orbison.

From Wikipedia "According to The Authorized Roy Orbison, the family moved again to Wink, Texas in 1946.[7] Orbison described life in Wink as "football, oil fields, oil, grease, and sand"[8] and expressed relief that he was able to leave the desolate town.[a][10] All the Orbison children had poor eyesight; Roy used thick corrective lenses from an early age. He was self-conscious about his appearance and began dyeing his nearly-white hair black when he was still young."

Check out his grandson who was 3 at the time singing and playing guitar with Godfather Joe Walsh (*from the Eagles ) doing Rocky Mountain Way. After leaving his thick eyeglasses on an airplane in 1963, while on tour with the Beatles, Orbison was forced to wear his prescription Wayfarer sunglasses on stage and found that he preferred them. ... His first wife died in a motorcycle accident, his 2 eldest sons died in a house fire.
