Roy's voice is so distinct and incredible
Texas legend and an American icon. You know his voice the second you hear it.
Elvis and Roy were good friends Elvis said he had the greatest voice he ever heard. Great timeless song! The 60s had a ton of great, upbeat timeless songs.
"I don't believe you. You're not the truth! No one could look as good as you!" Best lyrics ever!
He wrote and sang so many early iconic rock and roll songs. He had a tragic personal life--his wife was killed in a motorcycle accident in 1966 and then two of his young children died in a house fire in 1968 while he was away touring. Definitely check out some of his other hits--Only the Lonely, Blue Bayou, Crying-so many others. If you have never reacted to k.d. lang check out her version of Crying from MTV's Unplugged series in the 80's (the two of them also did the song together as a duet).

I saw him perform twice. So talented! He didn't need the stage flash. His voice could hold a person's attention that you didn't notice there was little performance flash. His voice was that mesmerizing.
You had to hear him live. My wife and I sat less than 10ft from him. Right in front of Roy. Looking at him you swear he was barely working but the power of his voice was overwhelming. He filled the space beyond capacity. I wish you both could have experienced Roy.
That song was a huge hit when it came out in the sixties. I remember a summer where every house party, every backyard had pretty woman playing and I lived in Toronto Then. That song made me almost prance when I heard it!!!

Hi Asia and BJ, to see your wonderful reaction throughout and at the end of the song fills my heart with joy about discovering the beautiful sound and soul in Roy Orbison's voice. Roy Orbison was unique.Roy Orbison had a one-of-a-kind voice with a three-octave range and what one writer called a 'glass-shattering falsetto. Elvis described Roy Orbison as the best singer in the world and felt intimidated going on after him. Whilst touring the UK and coming on straight after the Beatles he quietened the crowd and outperformed them to the point where John Lennon shouted "Hey yankee go home". To think through the terrible tragedy in his personal life with the death of his wife Claudette in a motorcycle accident ( he was travelling behind)and his two sons burnt to death at his home whilst he was touring the UK, that he was actually able to carry on singing and become popular again in the late 1980's is a very moving, inspiring story. Roy Orbison was a beautiful gentle human being that had a gift of an unearthly voice... a voice of an Angel, a gift from God. One of his sons said that Roy lived for the high notes of songs where he excelled. You must try You Got It from the late 1980's which won awards and some of his earlier songs such as Crying, In Dreams, Only the Lonley and Running Scared, you will not be disappointed. When asked how he would like to be remembered Roy Orbison replied... "I would just like to be remembered" One of a kind.... keep delving into the Roy catalogue.
A great singer a great reaction video, figured I'd share some tidbits about Roy Orbison that most people don't know though, he wore his trademark sunglasses because of a mild case of stage fright and it made him feel more secure and safe with the sunglasses (some people still think he was blind) and he was actually complimented on a couple of occasions directly by Elvis Presley for his music and Roy Orbison had a mutual respect for Elvis after attending a few of his concerts as well.
According to his son, Roy left his prescription glasses on a airplane, whilst on tour and only had his prescription sunglasses to wear so he didn't have much choice and a iconic image was born.

Roy was also a gentleman: he didn't pursue when he thought she wasn't interested, he was willing to let it go and go home.
He was, and is, my 70-year-old mother's favourite.

He had one of the best if not the best voice in his genre of music.
Roy Orbison had one of the most smooth powerful voices. He could sing real high falsetto & also low. Elvis Presley loved Roy's voice. Roy was known for performing while standing motionless & wearing black clothes to match his dyed black hair & dark sunglasses. Roy had lots of hits in the 60's such as "Only the Lonely", "Running Scared", "Crying", "In Dreams", "Love Hurts", "Blue Bayou" & "Oh, Pretty Woman". In 1988, he co-founded the Traveling Wilburys (a rock supergroup) with George Harrison, Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, & Jeff Lynne. They had a lot of great songs such as "Handle With Care" & "End Of The Line".
The recorded video of this song on his Black and White album is the best one. Greatest ensemble of singers and musicians I’ve ever seen and the song absolutely blew me away!

..."Class of 76"...Roy was one of the Sun Records signed performers that traveled the Southern half of the USA together by car playing live performances in theatres and town area's location after location...they were, Roy Orbison, Elvis, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis and I believe I'm missing another I think? Anyway June Carter who later married Johnny Cash traveled with them part time and sang solo and paired up in some of them doing their songs...Can you imagine hearing these guys with their individual distinctive music style performing together...MAGIC!
Roy came out of Lubbock just after Buddy Holly. Two great talents from the same dusty little town in the Texas panhandle at about the same time.

He has other great songs like; Crying , Dream Baby , In Dreams , You Got It , Blue Bayou , Only The Lonely , Not Alone Anymore , Blue Angel , It's Over , and the stuff he did withe the super group, The Traveling Wilburys. He died after they recorded some songs but before they had recorded the matching video, (Th End of the Line) So in the video, recorded on a train, they had an empty chair with his guitar in it to honor him.

Such a distinct song from 1964, that in 1990 it made a classic movie. All the words are different in this song, no chorus, no repeating. When asked why he wrote this way, Roy responded, if he was musically trained, he would have written songs differently, but this is the only way he knows how to write.

He resurrected major fame twice, quite late in life. Once after a duet with k.d. lang, who sang so Hallelujah so well that she did make at least one pretty woman cry: Asia. And he also did his gig with The Travelling Wilburys. Not many people are relevant for that long and in that many ways.

In 1977 I was a cross country truck driver and as I was coming into Nashville and dropped a rear end and had to put in the shop but no one had a replacement so they had to order one so I got a motel room for three days so instead of just sitting around I got a taxi and had the driver to carry me out to Johnny Cash's house and Roy Orbison lived next door and he had a swimming pool shaped like a guitar
Roy is from Vernon, TX. About 30 miles from where I grew up.

Van Halen did a rock cover version of this great song, Intruder/OH Pretty Woman, make sure you catch the Intruder intro when you review it. A local radio personality (Dale Dudley) said he went to high school w Roy, nicknamed him 'ass-face', one day his dad, n them were watching TV, Roy appeared, performed some songs, the dad said 'Looks like old ass-face did alright for himself' , Dale sarcastically replied, ' Yeah dad, you think so? That growl he does came from him recording the song. The producer said can you do that cat-call you did on the earlier take. Roy said "What? I don't know what you're talking about". So, they played it back where Roy goes "Meeercy!" They say "that. Do that again". Roy said, "I just said "Mercy" because of how long I had to hold that note".

I saw Roy on the same show as The Beatles back in 1963 ( in Liverpook, UK). He was terrific. But, because of the screaming girls, I didn't really hear The Beatles

Actually, the film was supposed to have a different title. The title was later changed to "Pretty woman" because some executives were unhappy with the working title.
