  • French President Emmanuel Macron is hosting German Chancellor Olaf Scholz for a joint ministerial summit today.
The two leaders and their respective cabinets are expected to hold talks on energy, economic policy and defense, subjects they haven't seen eye to eye on recently, particularly in regards to Russia's war in Ukraine. 300 lawmakers from both countries are also coming together to mark 60 years since the landmark Elysee treaty, an agreement which brought postwar France and Germany closer together and laid the foundations for today's European Union.

As a German we must be forever be grateful that France held out its hands after all the ugliness of the great wars and the whole world must be grateful at France for the French Revolution - Liberty, Ègalité, Fraternité. Making democracy possible at such a high price for so many people!!! Every country has its own interest but ultimately it is about compromise and close collaboration. we can only face todays challenges together and I am a grateful. Long live the European Union!!!! In terms of military please be patient with us because our constitution for good and obvious reasons allows us to use military only for defense purposes - changes to this approach are not easy for us....

Being french, I have only met lovely german people (who were usually visiting my region in south west France).
But as for germany as a political entity, I have only felt frustration.
    - Germany has pushed to an endless EU expansion eastward. This offered the germans industries a new cheap workforce, but led to a paralysed EU and brought eastern mafia to the west. Honestly, I am of those people in France who only hope we will leave the EU by now (France has a notorisouly high level of euroskepticism).
    - Germany turned into an export behemot with the reforms in 2005, just after the euro had bound us all (and so having the natural rise of currency by an export politic dampened by the fact that said currency is common), and by 2008 had siphoned all the demand in europe (as the other nations couldn't compete).
Basically in europe Germany created little new demand but a lot of offer, and this destabilized the rest of europe.
The rest of europe couldn't apply the same politic, as there would need a 2nd planet to buy the products, and anyway, the world and euro crisis prevented any such change.
    - When the crisis came, Germany pushed against keynesian politics in europe (as it didn't need it itself, and wanted to prevent a downgrade of the euro and as a result of german bank accounts) and pushed for austerity, which led to a decade of lost economic growth in europe, while the UK, US and Japan would spend their way out of the crisis.
They went as far as demanding the local chypre govt to find the finances by taking directly in private citizen bank accounts.
Of course when austerity didn't fit germany anymore, they changed the course of the EU.
    - Germany has milited against the nuclear energy in europe, stopping it at home, and weakening the french one in the EU (and going as far as demanding to stop a french nuclear plant "too close" to germany). Meanwhile, Germany has foolishly made itself dependent on Russian gas.
We have the end result here, and as usual, everybody does what is best for germany (european solidarity against the energy crisis is going full swing), while the germans go solo and sign 200 billion checks without even taking the time to give a call to their "partners". And watching Germany opening coal mines and coal plants would be laughable if it wasn't that terrible for the climate.
    - Germany was spying on France on behalf of the US. This one really stings.
    - Germany right now refuses to act in the conflict, and even blocks other nations which want to give their own tanks. Overall, they were way too happy to depend on the US to pay their security bill, dragging the feet everytime the french wanted to build up the european defnece industry and armies. Of course, they now wake up after the facts, sign a 100 billion check, but that is too little too late (and will probably be spent outside europe).
Quite franckly, it seems that Germany has made a specialty of always being on the wrong side of History.

Imagine an alternate world where the German and French nations were of much more similar mindsets, whether that's more like France, more like Germany, or something else altogether. The entire European Union would be a different, and a more capable beast all-in-all. I really wish the two could honestly find a more unified position, but if I'm being honest, I think that while Germany is the larger economic/industrial engine between the two, I think French leadership is much more designed to act as a much more global figure.

lol, most countries are acting as if there will be no Russia after this conflict is over, which is not the case. even if Russia loses this conflict, it will still exist and Germany will need cheap oil and gas from Russia to rebuild its industrial capacity. Germany wants to keep its production cost as low as possible, so it can't antagonise Russia beyond a point. The interest of Poland + baltic states is to hurt Russia as a payback for historic injustices and France will like to see Germany lose its access to cheap Russian gas so that French goods become more attractive. Ukraine on the other hand is a sinking ship, whos only hope is complete defeat of Russia and liberation of all its territories and using frozen Russian assets to pay for rebuilding Ukraine, any thing less will be a economic disaster worth a trillion dollars and no one has the money to rebuild a fraction of the Ukraine that has been turned into Rubble already. If this war goes on for another 6-12 months this cost will go up a few times over and the Ukrainian victory will become that more hard.

Deep down, nobody wants to admit this, but Germans don't like the French. An example: As the covid was hitting France hard, many French citizens suffered discriminations, vicious maltreatment including verbal and physical assaults in the hands of ordinary German citizens in Germany especially near the border areas (cities, towns . villages, industrial zones...)
As for the French, well, we don't dislike the Germans really. We just still feel an unexplainable awe towards the Germans. A few years ago, I remember a radio presenter call it "une peur ancestrale".
Deep down, I have always suspected the French overdrive to create a "couple" with Germany and make it work almost at all costs and being careful not to rock the boat of the relationship between our 2 countries comes from this "ancestral fear".

1914, is a debate, France had colonies and Germany went into Eastern Europe country because of an alliance, France than threatened war with Germany. 1914 the victors are viewed as right. 1939, France declared war on Germany remeber that.
