  • I converted my old Marin Hawk Hill to an E Bike using the Voilamart 1000w rear wheel kit . It was fairly straightforward with plenty of help off the internet as the instructions were not up too much.
    I got the Voilamart Kit and a 48v battery for around £500 and put 2 new tyres on for £30 , so a fairly cheap conversion in my books . It rides well and hoping to get out for some more green lane tours.
    Its not the lightest but still goes well with a decent range if you don't rip the arse out of it.
    Voilamart Ebike Build ….
    Hub wheel kit £179
    Battery £266
    Bike bag for controller £7.99
    Extras , torque arms , nuts bolts £20
    TOTAL = £472.99
    Prices as of May 2020

    Getting a 1000w kit from another brand over the weekend. Am so excited to assemble my first e-bike and be able to cruise like this wherever I go. Legit hate going slow on my bike, and I've grown up in a town with nasty headwinds that could slow any biker down to a crawl. The town I'm in doesn't have a wind problem though, but an excessive amount of steep hills problem

    Don’t put your controller in a bag, mosfets are temperature sensitive transistors and will burn out if you overheat them.
    The bag will contain the heat of higher speed riding and more quickly cause failure of the controller.
    I’ve owned the 1500 watt non lcd display version and if you don’t have sufficient heat dissipation you’ll be changing out your controllers regularly.

    • @Serpico1152
      @Serpico1152 10 дней назад

      @Elduende64 Yes a very good suggestion, I build a similar Voilamart 1000w version with a 52v battery on a unused 1993 Motiv Rockridge mountain bike 6 years ago and it didn't take me long to realize how hot the controller gets inside the bag without any ventilation 🤔, I then decided to remount it with the wires facing up & cable tied inside the alternate water bottle holder mount locaton on the rear down tube just below the bag with all the wires neatly hidden inside flexible conduit and the bag, while the battery is mounted on the front down tube primary water bottle mount screw location, I'm still using this same setup today with great success because the controller always remains cool to the touch. 😊

    Excellent instructional video there and a nice job done. Is the motor marked up as 500 watts? I am impressed by the low price of it, but my driving license is too valuable to me to risk all the backwash if I got caught riding an illegal bike in a public place. If it isn't obviously over powered (legally speaking) and I could blag my way out of the fact that the motor looks big and beefy, I might consider it. How is it on steep hills? Where I live, there are 20% hills. Hub motor might not do well and I might need a mid drive which works via the bikes gearing system to keep the old motor spinning fast and happy.

    • @davesolobiker5601

    • @davesolobiker5601

Try and see if it’s possible to remove this sensor and put it onto your existing levers. Failing that you can buy separate sensors to retro fit to your existing levers .

Power is instantly available to throttle before I turn on the system via the "M" button. When I turn off the LCD via the "M" button I get "OFF" on the screen but still have power to the throttle. Wow, Nice, I just bought the Voilamart kit and ordered the battery separately, I've never assembled anything like this before but I'm going to try..!! your Bike Is nice, Is it a large frame you have or medium? Also I've heard that the Tyre that comes with kit isn't that good, what Tyres did you get Instead? Any good make? I'm learning slowly and going to attempt to build my own.. thanks, Jeff

      @davesolobiker5601  3 года назад

      Glad I could help Jeff , yeah the tyre that came with it was no good so I put Schwalbe black jacks on both wheels . The inner tube for the rear was ok due its long valve for the thicker wheel . I think my bike is a medium.
      Just take your time route the cables as neat as possible , I also changed out the little bag for the controller as I found it a little small .

      @@davesolobiker5601 Thanks Dave, It means a lot for the help and advice.. whilst I'm waiting for the battery to arrive could I ask about the brakes? My brakes are Cantilever and I see that In the Diagram that it has 2 leads from the controller for the brakes, I've read that when the brakes are applied that it will cut out the motor.. can I use my existing brakes for this or do I need to upgrade my brakes to Disc Brakes?
      Can you help and advise? Many Thanks, Jeff

      @@jeffhalkyard No worries Jeff , mine were disk brakes but were worked via cable . So I think your brakes will be fine just swap the levers for the ones supplied so the power will be cut as you say. But what I would say is once the brakes are all fitted I would test for how well they stop you as the bike will now be heavier and faster ! Hope this helps atb Dave

      @@PlainVlogs Hi Luke, how are you? I got mine from Ebay but it came from Germany as It's cheaper than buying from the UK, I bought a 52v 20ah as I was told that the Conversion Kit controller can take up to 56v and I had someone tell me online that it's a powerful battery, It's a bit on the big side and a little heavy, but not too much, I would have preferred one of the normal downtube removable batteries, but, they cost as much as I paid, for less power, although, now that I've bought it I do wish I hadn't due to the size factor.. but here's the link to it, take a look, it only took one week to arrive. www.ebay.co.uk/itm/UPP-52V-20Ah-Lithium-Ebike-Battery-for-1000W-1200W-1500W-Motor-Triangle-Case-LED/392996557131

      @@davesolobiker5601 I know about the speed limit, but reading about it on the gov website said it was also limited by 250w. I would have no problem getting a larger wattage and just keeping the speed low, but if its not allowed at all I will have to go low power.
      I have a big bike trailer to pull or I would just stick to pedaling, I'm only asking about it here because it seems confusing that so many people have what the gov website says isn't allowed and I'm not sure what to order.
      Thanks for your response btw.

    • @davesolobiker5601
      @davesolobiker5601  3 года назад

      I wasn’t aware of the 250w limit but having just checked the gov website . It seems you can have a higher watt bike but it needs registered and insured and a helmet worn . I am guessing there are a lots of illegal e-bikes out there and telling the difference will be difficult.
      I have seen lots of kids racing around on high powered Ebikes without pedalling so that is a big giveaway to the police .
      I suppose it’s down to wether you want to take a risk on getting a higher output but 250w with a trailer will in my opinion struggle.

      @@davesolobiker5601 yeah I figured it wouldn't really be a problem to have 500w or so, its just my paranoia that makes me ask.
      I can pedal with the trailer full of shopping as it is, but I wanted something to make it a bit easier.
      So the general idea is get a more powerful wattage but keep the speed under 15mph and if anyone asks say its 250w ;-)

    What's the furthest you've ridden? Over the last couple of years I've realised by cyclists use padded shorts, clip on shoes and even noticed that proper cyclists all have super thin seats, and after riding a few 40 mile rides, I realised why. Your sit bones are supposed to fit around the seat, not sit on top of the gel cushions. The gel might feel comfortable at first but after a while your arse it gonna hurt. Also, did you ever get caught / pulled over?

    Unless you’re IT savvy and know how to fix a controller motherboard you are far better off buying the external controller system for more easier access to your controller when it gets fried-and depending on how much you ride, it will eventually need changing out.
