I head out solo on this trip to see how I cope on the MTB doing hills, the last trip was fairly flat but this one has a good few hills to negotiate. I head deep in the forest for an overnight camp in an old ruined building. Weather was very overcast and grey so not the best filming conditions. :-:-:-:-:-:-:-:-:-:-:-:-:-:-:-:-:-:-:-:-:-: Music by: bensound.com License code: DGO13FUA53U4ZIZI Othe...

MTB now Winter ready | Bikepacking Trips
Просмотров 73321 день назад
After recently doing my first Bikepacking trip on my mountain bike I came back with a few things that needed sorting. Firstly the mudguards I thought would be ok weren’t and secondly I needed a small rack fitted to the front to keep my bag from rubbing on the forks. So with new mudguards and rack fitted I headed on a test ride to make sure all was good, now the bike is proper ready for winter u...

On this video I carry out a fork replacement on my Cannondale MTB removing the 2.5 kg Suntour ones and replacing with some exotic carbon forks weighing around 900g. And make my old mountain bike ready for some winter/rough terrain Bikepacking trips, using most of the bags from my usual Bikepacking bike. It will be used on a trip soon when Ian and I head back to the canals, so will be good test, ...

Excellent engaging post. Thanks.
Handy for boot of car 👍🏻
As long as it stays in there 😂
nice little early Xmas present Dave 🚴 is that you on about 5 or 6 bikes now ? still got your Ribble ?
5 bikes and yes the ribble is still in the stable 😂😂
That does look a lot of fun and a useful little chore bike🚲😎👍🏻
Yes but that’s about its limit 😂😂
Good little bike for the town and short runs. Handy for chucking in the car boot for a trip up a promenade somewhere. Anyhow see you next video. All the best. Take care. B. K.
Yes it’s fits that job nicely atb Dave 🚲👍
@ don’t let Ian see it Dave or he will want one Ha. Ha. Stay safe. B. K
verry nice post
Thanks ⛺️🍺🚲👍
Thanks for this Dave, living near Banks on your route here it’s great to watch another cyclists view of the area. We’re spoilt for choice around here. Have you looked at the Great North Trail ride at all? Some nice mostly gravelly type riding from the Pennines up into the north of Scotland.
Thanks , the hill out of Lanercost to banks on a heavy bike 😂😂 I have looked at doing sections of the GNT and it’s on my ever growing list of rides to do. The usual life and work balance ! Atb Dave ⛺️👍
convert it to a single speed
Still need the gears for the hills 😂
Bike packing in November, you're hardcore Dave!! You'll have to change your name to "Dave the deer spotter", looks like you were surrounded by them up there. Cracking video again matey. Look forward to the next one. Cheers, Paul 👍
Thanks Paul, yeah plenty of deer in and around the forest areas up here. Thanks for watching atb Dave 🦌🚲⛺️👍
November and still able to overnight out. Take care and see you again soon Dave
Cheers mate , to be fair it was still mild for time of year. But still damp and miserable 😂 atb Dave ⛺️🚲👍
That's some cycle in mind Dave! Hats off to you. And always good to see you back in Kershope - me and Annie were camped up that way 2 weeks ago, other side of river to the bothy. It was miserable that night, and I don't just mean Annie's company 🙄😂 The cake box on your cycle in looked the biz, I'll have to try and remember that place for next time I'm up that way. And it's great to see deer bound across the road / tracks in front of you, they might recognise human footsteps, but they've no idea what bicycles are 😁 Ciao for now atb DVS :)
Cheers Donna, my legs felt it a couple of days later 😂 yes I saw you camped there via IG 👍 cake box is great and only a £1 a cake too , so well worth it your ever passing 👍 atb Dave ⛺️🚲👍
Nice one again Dave. Looking forward to seeing your trip with Ian and James.
Thanks mate , James won’t travel by train so doubtful of that happening. Ian and me on the next one atb Dave ⛺️🚲👍
Nice one Dave really enjoyed that there’s a cracking spot to camp near me train from Carlisle to Dumfries then it’s about 10 miles out Mersehead nature reserve got forest and a beach so really good also they leave bird hides unlocked and they’re out of way could easy bivvy down in one of them and stay dry not camped there yet but spent lots of time down there have a look mate be a great spot ATB Coops 👍🏻🚴🍻
Sounds like a plan coops , but camping on a nature reserve they can get a bit uppity about it ? Well that is if they know lol I’ve come across a few bird hides and yes would make ideal bivi spots . Do you have any os map grid refs ? Atb Dave
@ dg2 8ah post code not sure about grid refs ….camping be fine mate the woods are on the far end of the reserve and both the hides are out the way too it’s lovely you go through the woods brings you out at the beach. There’s a gravel path most the way through the woods too so bike friendly 👍🏻
@ so you come in off the main road , turn left past the car park thru the farm then continue to the woods and turn right towards the shore.
@ yeah just follow road in past visitors centre keep going then you come to woods and a dead end turn right into woods they’re only small not dense with trees but plenty spots to get camped down and the beach is straight through lovely Sandy beach always quiet 👍🏻
Cheers Dave, really enjoyed that trip out, some nice country and villages. That cottage was a bit spooky though, don't think I'd have wandered down there! Glad you enjoyed the beer, well deserved after that trip. :-) Alan.
Thanks Alan, it was an enjoyable trip although the weather was flat. All quiet at the cottage 👻👍 tfw atb Dave ⛺️🍺🚲👍
Great video Dave, looking forward to the next one when you're with Ian, where did you get your mudguards from?
Thanks , hopefully out with Ian next month. Mudguards I got off Amazon - www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B08LMG9P3Z/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&th=1 atb Dave
@davesolobiker5601 thanks Dave
Very good Dave as usual some nice trails and locations. Well done. Take care. B. K.
Glad you enjoyed it Brian, until the next one atb Dave 🚲👍
Great video Dave
Much appreciated Greig 🙏 atb Dave 🚲⛺️👍
I think Route 72 is probably my favourite cycle route. It's not a challenging route particularly but it's just hard enough to keep you interested. Nice video, cheers. P.S. if you're using the DJI Neo, get yourself the goggles. When you're not using them to fly you can use them to watch films in the tent off an SD card.
Thanks yeah there is always something to pullover and checkout. I have the Neo, think I’ve spent enough on DJI this year 😂😂 Atb Dave 🚲⛺️👍
@@davesolobiker5601 aye it's not cheap once you've got all the bits and bobs to go with it 😂
Brilliant Dave, great routes and gorgeous countryside, I do miss the British countryside.
Thanks mate even on a grey overcast day lol
i just love finding all the snickettes, ginnells, and backways too ...
Thanks , it’s always good to explore 🚲👍
Nice ride and video, is it weird without you mate Ian? Looking forward to the next one
Yeah, living so far apart isn’t always easy especially as I was only off for 2 days. But we have one planned for next month hopefully , atb Dave 🚲👍
You should try the Kershope head bothey, it's only a couple of miles from where you were camped, a wood stove & bunks. I know it's not really camping but would make an interesting video?
Thanks yeah , my luck it would be full of folk. Not a big bothy lover as you gan home smelling of smoke for days lol , camped in green bothy over one the kindler side years ago now.
Another cracker Dave i remember you camped there before but how did you ever find that spot in the first place.
2 hobbies in one dave ⛺🚴 long nights on your own like but the firebox makes a massive difference 🔥 recognised the area at the start.liking the music on your vids.
Sure is Geordie , them hills destroyed my legs with the extra weight tho 😂 little firebox really does add to a camp tho . atb Dave 🚲⛺️👍
@@davesolobiker5601did you give the train driver a wave 😂
Nice one Dave….I too love this season and yes the only downside are the longer darker hours. That scout hut/cottage had lots of crap weather shelter opportunities I noticed…..keep posting mucka One question though …..what are those front bar extensions you’ve got locked onto the handlebars as I’m researching ones for my cockpit. Cheers ….Bessie’s Ron
Thanks Ron, yes plenty of places to shelter if the weather turned really bad. Those bar extensions are just cheap Amazon ones , I have them on both bikes now and they work a treat. Link below ⬇️ Atb Dave www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0CS9HD2FH/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
@ thanks Dave
I always look forward to your videos , you don't have to do huge mileage to have a super adventure . Question what are he pannier bags you use
Very true any trip is an adventure 👍 link for the bags here - winstanleysbikes.co.uk/altura-ultralite-vortex-waterproof-pannier-bag?gad_source=1&gbraid=0AAAAAD_ilfIdeLzfTBziZH8PXVsJYlzmP&gclid=Cj0KCQiA_9u5BhCUARIsABbMSPs3KI1hElAkmnz53WNbDlCuDP_vaj0DjG6HfVWY2YL4tmd0OxQ8XckaAoiREALw_wcB#172=2375
Nice video mate, those cycle routes look very appealing, lovely areas around you, having the fire at camp was great, caveman tv, catch you soon⛺️🚲👍🏻
Glad you enjoyed it, you will have to do a northern trip again. looking forward to our next one ⛺️🚲🍺👍
Yeah sounds good, Kershope Forest looks like it’ll tick all my boxes👌🏻
Yeah kershope forest is on the reivers route, takes you east thru to Kielder then towards Newcadtle 👍
I think that’s a route I’d love to do, that book you sent me is in my ‘toilet book’ stack, I’ll have to reread it in the morning😂👍🏻
Yeah the weather has been the same here (Mid Wales) for weeks. The sun did appear on Tuesday and I almost called the police!
Ha yes we had sunshine on Tuesday too , it was a shock 😎👍
Another good video. What tent do you use?
Thanks , it’s the Six Moon Designs Lunar Solo. Not cheap but very light and versatile. atb Dave
I tip my hat to you both after this day, horrible conditions
Thanks , looking back isn’t too bad but it was miserable at the time 🌧️😂👍
Update on my saga: GCU arrived today but I'm holding off on the update. WHY? I downloaded the file from MAHLE's website but the bike is now working OK...other than an odd "low battery" warning on the Pulsar One brain unit now and then. The app shows everything is OK and the bike shows 85% charge + the motor works fine. So why fix it if it ain't broke? The GCU is here along with the update file on thumb-drive, so if/when the bike stops working properly I'll try it then. Meanwhile, my wife has 2 X-35 bikes that have NEVER been updated but perform perfectly...so the last thing she wants is for them to be updated!
Sounds like a sensible decision , leave it until it does need updating. At least you have the GCU at the ready . Yeah my X35 never been updated , I only get an issue when fully charged, then all I do is ride the bike a few yards with power on and it clears 🤷♂️
great vlog guys
Thanks ⛺️🚲👍
nice.
Thanks 🚲⛺️👍
Well done Dave and Ian great adventure let’s hope weathers better next time Atb COops 👍🏻👍🏻🚴🚴🍻🍻
Thanks mates , fingers crossed for the weather 😂 atb Dave ⛺️🚲🍺👍
thank you
Your welcome 👍
Brilliant vid this. Made me want to be there with you guys, you both seem like genuine, decent blokes. Your tent looks pretty class, what make is it?
Thanks , my tent is the six moon designs lunar solo, Ian’s is the Lanshan 1 Pro atb Dave 🚲⛺️🍺👍
Great video. Superb route very enjoyable to watch, well done to you both.
Glad you enjoyed it atb Dave 🚲👍
Good video is that your brother.
No, he’s a mate 👍
Fantastic video Dave and Ian I’ve watched this trip three times. Those canal journeys and views take some beating. All the best. B. K
Thanks mate really appreciate you watching again 👍 atb Dave
I wonder how many cyclists have ended up in the drink😆......nothing there to stop them if they had to swerve erratically for any reason on those narrow bike paths near the canals.
Quite a few I imagine , I’m sure @mortyoutdoors went for a dunk in the canal many years ago ? I try my best to stay out tho 😂
Yeah I’ve been in a couple of times😂, once on the Ashby canal in January 🥶, that was a bit chilly!
Great vid lads brilliant adventure
Thanks 👍
thank you
You're welcome
Are you going to keep the chain or replace it?
I replaced it , put it down as a faulty one !
Beautiful route
Thanks 👍
great job like the tyres i leave mudguards on all the time.
That’s the plan on this bike too 👍
Interesting stuff here thanks, though none of it worked for the bike I just took (brand new) out of the box. Have 4 other X35 bikes - two of those had to go to a dealer to get updated and have been fine since. The other 2 have never been a problem and since a dealer is far away from where they are (and this new one is) they've never been updated. But the brand-new one has the dreaded 193 error code so I either get to drag it off to dealer, send the bike back to the seller or buy the GCU and DIY it. Waiting for seller to weigh-in...maybe THEY should buy me a GCU cable? Otherwise both me and the wife LOVE Mahle systems. I have another bike here with X20...with its "smart" charger you can do the updates yourself via the phone app.
The phone app allows you to do very little and especially any updates, so no is the answer 👍
@@davesolobiker5601 Update: Ordered a GCU cable to DIY it BEFORE having to schlep off to a dealer 50 miles away via train. Meanwhile, decided to take the thing out on a ride where I wouldn't need any assist. I really like the Bianchi E-Impulso Allroad, my wife now has two as does yours truly. They're in different places, two here at home in Sicily and two more at a place we visit a lot. While I'm putting my shoes on after turning the bike on and pairing the Pulsar 1 brain unit (which shows the usual error code 193 I think it is?) I notice the pink flashing light isn't pink or flashing! Now the brain unit says "Low Battery" despite the charge display above it reading 88% We ride off and I turn on the assist to see what happens. It works! By the time we get back the "Low Battery" indication is gone as well. Turned it off, than back on for another quick test-ride...so far ALL GOOD...before the GCU even arrived? Once it does, I'm wondering whether to try the update or not?
