  • This is an updated look at what and how I packed on our Leeds Liverpool canal ride.
    As always this is what works for me , so might not work for you. I have tried the other ways either panniers or ultralight but this seems to work best for me.
    My kit is always evolving to find the right balance of what works for me.
    ===========================
    ** Tent shown in this video is not the one I used, the Vango Neon UL1 was the one I took on the trip . The Big Agnes is recent addition to my kit **

    Thanks for reminding people that this set up will not work for every rider. I use panniers they are much easier that the children I used to have in a bike seat they don’t fidget. I’m a chronic over packer so need videos like this to learn what is really neeeded.

      Thanks , yeah I’m not going to preach what is the right or wrong way to pack, but panniers still have a place. If it works for you that’s great. But I always overfilled them 😂 atb Dave

    Thanks for sharing this Dave, great waterproof bags and having those particular one's must be a help if travelling part of a journey on a train and taking up less room. I think travelling light really is the name of the game in bikepacking 👈👏👋

      Thanks for watching , yes this set up has improved getting to/from start points by train. It’s not uber light but works for me atb Dave ⛺️🚲👍

    Thats a great setup Dave, plenty of storage. I am hoping to trim down my bikepacking setup this year and one thing I can do to improve is get rid of my bulky sleeping bag, I've looked at the Pipedream 200 hoping that it will suffice for Spring ,Summer and Autumn use. I guess when you combine it with extra layers then it will do well.
    I shall be using Bivi bag or Lanshan 1 on my bikepacking throughout the Summer:)

      Thanks Sandy , yeah I was overpacking using the panniers , this way means I carry just what I need . i had the pipedream 200 out in temps to 5c on Thursday night I had my softie pants and puffy jacket on and it was just coping. I think if I was in a bivi that would give another layer of warmth but I was in a tent 🤷‍♂️ minimalist without being totally naked is the way forward ⛺️🚲👍

    Good set up Dave, I do like that Altura front loader, appears nicely proportioned, stable and practical for lifting items from the top. Yes good to highlight combining rail travel and cycling, since this significantly expands the range of possibilities and at least in my opinion, always good to leave the car at home whenever possible. Also the practicalities when traveling by rail with a bike concerning baggage configuration.

      Thanks , yeah if on a trip I do like the fact I can get to start points by train or directly from home where possible. I am really pleased with the front bag , surprising how much gear I can get in it. tfw atb Dave ⛺️🚲👍

      @@davesolobiker5601 Also interesting to know that Alpkit will make a custom fit frame bag. I participate in some of their organised gravel bike rides i.e. Keswick or more local at Gateshead Metro Centro.

    For me i pack like this each bag is same category.. ie front bag complete sleep system every thing i need including base camp clothes … meaning only unpack one bag for sleep system … rear bag is just for food and cook sets 20 litres hold a lot of food 10 days .. frame bag is just for tools and water i hold 4 litres … front forts clothes …. Under frame for fuel stem bags for camera gear and drone but i have 4 stem bag other 2 for clothes while riding ie arm warmer high viz jacket etc easy accces

      Sounds like you have it nicely organised into what and when you require it . I try to keep my filming gear to a minimum ie use GoPro and iPhone rather than my compact or dslr 📷 which are far bulkier and heavier 👍

    Nice setup. That Altura handlebar roll top bag is exactly what I'm looking for. Do you have any dimensions? Can't to seem to find any on the internet, some says 65cm wide but that sounds just too much.
