Hi guys, I've just uploaded my review of the Shimano Tiagra 4700 Groupset that I used in this video, hope it's helpful: ruclips.net/video/d0TTnIyA9yk/видео.html
Great job and certainly a good upgrade The only thing I can recommend is get the front derailleur for this it has a different throw than the one you are using and works much better 👍😎
Everything I like about bikes in one video: Giving old, simple things new life, being proud of the accomplishment of restoration, self-expression and problem solving without busting the bank. Cool!
Love the low key approach, I'd raise the saddle and drop the handlebars but that's more of a road racing position - but you might still get more power out of legs if you raised the saddle. Awesome bike tool set-up
Thanks Bernard! 🙂 Yeah, I had the saddle a tad to low in the video. I would like to get the handlebars lower eventually but I am really not very flexible 😂
Few things: lube every thread and surface that moves inside other surface. BB threads, crank axle, pedals. First, it'll keep moisture away and secondly you'll be glad you did when it's time to remove them.
Hiya 👋 because all the parts were new they came with thread lock already on the threads. You can see the bottom bracket had a load of silicone grease in it at 6:00 in the video. The only bit that didn’t have any sort of retaining compound was the pedals because I had used them before, so I put anti-seize compound on them.
I'm gonna call it right now -- this channel will be at 100k subs by this time next year. Prepare a spot for that silver play button in your living room, mate. Top content this.
I was really frustrated with the way my bike felt while out on rides to the point I almost tossed it and bought a whole new one. Luckily I had some sense and took it to the bike shop for a much needed Tune up on a 13 year old bike- the replaced all the cables/cable housing l, and trued my wheels, and now it drives like a dream! I have the old SORA shifting, and maybe in a year or two I will upgrade to something new, but for now I am totally satisfied and excited to be riding again!
just did this exact same thing and finished yesterday. unfortunately just ran into your video now. however, high five! i feel the same. the only noise is the air coming through! it only took me twenty years to decide to overhaul...... thank you man.
i keep getting told to “upgrade” my bike ‘cause it’s a 7 speed but i love my frame. i’m slowly buying parts to do this tiagra upgrade and wanna do this exact thing! no need to buy new when what i got works great, thanks for sharing this it was a blast to watch
nice build mate - tiagra is a huge upgrade from older and cables-out-the-side groupsets - its honestly underrated, but a reliable tank of a groupset. hope you have happy KMs on it .
Haha no worries. Btw I thought you did a great job with the bike and it looked great too! Did you end up changing your front derailleur and if so is your shifting smoother? 🍻
Thanks Adam! Building up a bike is so much fun, so it’s worth it just for that 😄 I don’t think road bikes have changed a whole lot in the last few years, but that’s just my opinion. It could be worth it to save a few quid. Let me know how you get on?
You really have nailed how to pass on DIY education along with gold class entertainment. Brill vid. I work at halfords on the bikes (mostly assembling and basic jobs such at flats/wheel truing, but I'm not confident to give new stuff a go! I've owned my road bike 10 years and would absolutely love to delve in, just terrified to end up with a bike I can't then reassemble😂
Hey Enis, don’t be scared! Why don’t you just break it down bit by bit until you’re comfortable with what you’re doing? E.g take the handlebars and forks out, do what you need to do with them and then put them back on instead of completely stripping your bike down?
@@TheSlowworms Appreciate the feedback, to be fair headset bearings will be my 1st point of call so I'll be going for that. I have a habit of diving in head first and getting lost on new ventures😂 I'll be going slow for sure, cheers🙏
Lovely work......removing the old square taper bottom bracket is a great upgrade...those things are like a solid piece of steel...very heavy....the hollowtech ones are much more rigid too..
Congrats, this was a very well-edited video. You said the crankset is a compact 34-52 but I guess you meant 34-50. Anyway great setup for climbing up walls on a 1:1 ratio. Useful! Thanks
This era of Trek 1.1, 2.1, 2.3 are some of the best deals around. The framesets are excellent, highly refined alloy frames with carbon forks. (Yes the fork is indeed carbon.)
Love the build. I also put that bar tape (the very orange version) on a Decathlon RC520 I ‘gravellised’. Realised afterwards you’ll get the white ‘fizik’ on one drop and none on the other. If you want to match, you need to completely unreel 1 tape and start from the wrong end. As it’s a gravel frankenbike, it kind of works, but on a full roadie I think the OCD might kick in!
ah thanks mate! That sounds like a cool project. Have you got any photos? That is exactly what I thought and that is the only thing I would change about them! I would rather it just didn't have Fizik written on them. I didn't bother worrying about the lettering in the end because I was too worried about getting the spacing the same on both sides 😆 I've heard good things about the new Decathlon Riverside 920 gravel bike. I would love to get my hands on one.
good job mate! first of I really like your video, although there are some proper videos out there with the similar the content but all video are meant to be unique and your video is brilliantly unique . I'm thinking of upgrading my groupset from an 8 sp to 10 and this video is an absolute saviour. Keep it up and looking forward to more content from you. cheers!
Thanks for the video, I happen to have the exact same bike and was wondering about the cassette fitting. Now I can upgrade to Tiagra 10 speed! Thanks!!!
Nice kit. The spec is just fine. One tip...dont be afraid to wind bar tape the traditional way....top to bottom. It means you dont need that naff tape at the inside, you just finish the ends off with bar end caps
@@TheSlowworms 105 from _over 20_ years ago was robust, fast, and smooth. The main "advance" we've seen since then is more cogs in the cluster. I’m still keen on my 2012 2.1, my first and only road bike. Thing about a road bike, they feel so effortless on flat terrain that it’s like your cheating. Uphill, compact crank and a little patience do the job.
I built up a NOS 2005 frame (Trek 1200) with Tiagra 4600, though I didn't care for the short cage rear derailleur. I wanted more range, and I had an old 9 speed XT mech in my parts box, which pulls great with the new shifters, and I'm running an 11-34 cassette now.
@@TheSlowworms actually, the rear derailleur doesnt know the difference between parts. Its movement is governed by whatever shifter is used, so the main issue is the length of the cage.
Yeah, but Jak is saying he had the Tiagra 4600 but he wanted more range so now he’s running a 11-34 cassette. I’m talking about the compatibility between the Tiagra shifter and the new cassette not the derailleur.
@@TheSlowworms ah. I see. But still should be fine I think. Thanks for explaining. Cheers. Enjoy your vids and only just discovered them. Ive built a few bikes similar to what you seem to do. Its all good fun. I have a specialised sirrus which started life as a 3x8 speed hybrid, and is now 3x10 speed with drop bars and 105. ahh thank you very much! I love playing with bikes and modifying them to suit my needs. What do you think of the mini v brakes? I might put some on my girlfriends bike if they're any good.
Just a note: With that back brake, if the front of one brake pad wear out fast then you can still fix your problem by setting it again as the bolt with those funny shaped discs will allow the bolt to wiggle itself into whatever direction necessary.
I think a couple brands make a tire lever that's still plastic but much thicker and sturdier -- I have some "pedro's" that work well. great video, very pleasant vibes.
FYI -- You can adjust the pitch of the brake pad on these types of brakes. So the brake caliper probably wasn't bent. Also some people like to adjust the angle of the brake pad to avoid squealing. Although with modern brake pads they only really squeal if there is a lot of aluminium from the rim embedded in the pad. You can just rub the pad on a flat pavement to take off the top layer with the aluminium dust embedded.
Yeah I tried to toe it in but I couldn’t adjust it enough. In all honesty the callipers weren’t much more than pads would’ve been on their own. I guess because nobody wants callipers with long arms? 🤷♂️

I have a 1.1 2013. I was thinking of doing something similar since my shifter broke and my cassette and chain is pretty much worn down. You didn't have any issue fitting a 10 speed on the wheel/hub? That is my main concern and it is hard to determine these things. I have Weinmann 700c LP18 rims and I think the stock hubs. Any advice? I'm thinking I can keep the stock cranks as they seem fine, but not sure. I can replace those once they are all worn down.
Really enjoyed your video bro. I'm using Tiagra 4700 as well but with a 105 5600 crankset and brake calipers. So far so good. Been using it for a year plus now. Not a fan of carbon frame so a CAAD10 is good enough for me.
I recommend you change the chain to a road-only one , the hg54 chain may rub the next cassette cog when it is in the smallest cog (Although Shimano says they are compatible). You can check that by reversing the crank.
@@TheSlowworms Yes. I'm sorry, I must've clicked on a wrong link in another video of yours. I was asking about the wheels on your budget gravelbike build. Have found the answer by now... ;-)
Hi Theodore, I don’t have a specific place where I buy parts. That was especially true with this project because I had to get each component from a different shop due to the global parts shortage
Looks like a not so budget upgrade. Yet I found myself in a same position trying to swap into new wheel from freehub into a cassette and ended changing the whole set but the frame and bb/crankset ( oh, and the brakes)
It’s really good to see people build bikes when it’s like realistically possible to do, the amount of vids I’ve seen where people say they are gonna build a bike and then buy some £900 groupset 😂
I know exactly what you mean. I didn’t go mountain biking for years because I had a really rubbish, badly made bike and couldn’t afford a good one. In the end I thought sod it and bought a cheap new one with good reviews. Everyone’s got a better bike than me but I don’t care because I have so much fun on it and unlike everyone else I’m not worried about chipping the paintwork. Bikes and bike parts are so expensive. If I’m honest with you, I actually wanted to get Sora components (the level below Tiagra) but I couldn’t find them anywhere 😆
Nice, I’ve just finished swapping all the components from my dads old btwin to a slightly better old Claude butler frame I’m got of eBay for about 60 quid 😀
Sorry, I’m not really sure. Parts were in short supply at the time so I bought them over several months from all over the place. I think Shimano have stopped selling Tiagra now as well
Thanks, I really appreciate it! It was just over £400 in the end but I had to do a bit of hunting. Just about every part came from a different website because the prices varied massively. Out of interest, do you think you’d be interested in a quick 2 minute video reviewing the groupset? That’s what I’m thinking of doing next.

Really enjoyed your video bro. I'm using Tiagra 4700 as well but with a 105 5600 crankset and brake calipers. So far so good. Been using it for a year plus now. Not a fan of carbon frame so a CAAD10 is good enough for me.
Thanks Amir, I really appreciate it 🙂 That sounds cool. What made you go for a mixture of 105 and Tiagra?
Hi bro. No particular reason really. Just love the looks of polished alum compared to the newer all black groupset.
looks good, like a brand new bike 👌🏻
Thank you Pao 🙂👍
What youve done is ulgraded from a 1.1 to a 1.5 effectively. Frames are same. Maybe carbon forks upgrade soon?
cool video dude, thank you!
Thank you 👍
Technically the most sound upgrade. I would just upgrade to 105 cranks and dura ace shifters
Looks way better... and if you could remove some of the graphics it would clean it up even more
Thanks! They’re all painted on unfortunately 😒 I could spray it but I’m not that fussed about it at the minute
The 1series1.2 has carbon forks I know because I tried to sand them down but soon realised stopped and prepped for paint
Ah-ha, that’s interesting. Does it come with the same components?
I personally use flatheat screwdrivers to take of tires.
Beautiful
Thanks Derwin!
I recommend you change the chain to a road-only one , the hg54 chain may rub the next cassette cog when it is in the smallest cog (Although Shimano says they are compatible). You can check that by reversing the crank.
Ah ok, I’ll look into that. Thanks 👍
Ive been using decathlons tyre levers. Cheap and does the job.
Great video! What is the model number for the brake calipers you are using?
Thanks Hans! They’re Shimano R451 57mm. All the parts are listed in the description
really enjoyed watching these informative yet quirky videos :) reminds me of the @c90adventures Ed March
Thanks mate! I haven’t heard of that channel. I’ll check it out 🙂
schwalbe has good tire levers
Cheers Larry, I’ll have to get some!
Other then Amazon where can I shop online for Shimano Tiagra group set? I as well have a old trek 1.1 that I’m looking to upgrade
You’ll have to shop around I’m afraid. Each component from this bike came from a different place because stock was so low. Good luck!
What kind of grease do you use for the bottom bracket and crankset?
I use TF2 on the crank shaft
I seem to recall you also mounted new wheels that were kind of budget?
Could you also link to those? Looking for a set of new wheels for my own bike.
Hi 👋 I didn’t put new wheels on this bike. Are you talking about another bike?
@@TheSlowworms Yes. I'm sorry, I must've clicked on a wrong link in another video of yours.
I was asking about the wheels on your budget gravelbike build.
Have found the answer by now... ;-)
Ah ok, glad you’ve found it. They’re quite old now but they seem to do the job👍
Hi! this was an easy going straight forward video, where do you buy your components?
Hi Theodore, I don’t have a specific place where I buy parts. That was especially true with this project because I had to get each component from a different shop due to the global parts shortage
I think it's quite normal to change out your tires every year. They just get worn and the rubber loses its grip.
Ahh right, I just change them whenever they wear out
@@TheSlowworms if you buy more performance oriented tires they will wear out faster but have more grip which is valuable in cornering, braking.
@@phqnomenon ah I see, like a softer formula 1 tyre wears out quicker than a harder one
Which part of England do you live in? Are your bikes for sale?
Cornwall! It depends really. Which bike do you like?
2:05 Keep an eye on the red tomcat ... :-)
😂 he was circling me, trying to catch me for his dinner
The Slowworms :-) ... good work btw - and good Video.
Looks like a not so budget upgrade. Yet I found myself in a same position trying to swap into new wheel from freehub into a cassette and ended changing the whole set but the frame and bb/crankset ( oh, and the brakes)
The upgrade wasn’t budget, but the bike is. Are you happy with how your bike turned out?
Yes, and hope you’re happy how it rides now
Does it have a Kick Stand?
No, I’m afraid it doesn’t
How big of a tire, can the bike take.
Not a clue to be honest maybe 30c
Great vid 👍
Thanks Taran, I really appreciate it! 🙂
Ah nice one! Claud Butlers are great bikes. Is it a steel frame?
How much did it all cost? I want to do something similar with my 2013 Trek 1.2. Great video!
Sorry, I’m not really sure. Parts were in short supply at the time so I bought them over several months from all over the place. I think Shimano have stopped selling Tiagra now as well
Pedro's tire levers, bud! Use two, and they'll never break.
Cheers Cody! 🤘
+1
How do you know so much about bicycle repair if you don't ride really or care about riding really?
I don’t do a lot of road cycling but I do a lot of mountain biking.
Nice job dude. Good to see your videos. May I ask you how tall you are? I see the frame's size is 54.
Thanks mate! I’m 5’6”. 54 would be a bit big for me on a normal bike but it’s what Trek recommends for my height on their website.
May i have the old ones?
No ya can’t 😂
Glad you didn't pay 13,000 pounds for a new bike, congratulations!
Hi great video. How much was all the parts for this upgrading? I have just bought this bike on gumtree and is my first road bike.
@@TheSlowworms going to be honest here mate I know HEE HAW about bikes 😂😂😂 so a review from me would be no good to anyone 🤣
Nooo, I mean if I made a 2 minute review video of the Shimano Tiagra parts on this channel would you watch it? 🤣
@@TheSlowworms aye go for it 👍
You need Shimano BR-R650 long reach brake (57 mm)
Are they better than the R451?
@@TheSlowworms yes, they are based on what I’ve read around.
Ah ok, that’s good to know. Thank you!
I still have this bike as stock.
Well that’s really good. It means Trek specced the bike perfectly for you and all the parts are still in working order
