I’m not even kidding when I say that around 2022 (when the movie became a meme), this movie unironically helped me bond with a buncha people who are still my friends today. It’s not a perfect movie, but it definitely has it’s charm and will always hold a weird place in my heart. After all, it’s the movie where they go back in time to the first thanksgiving to get turkeys OFF THE MENU! It’s also like one of two or three Thanksgiving movies that exist lmao
This was fun to revisit. I worked on this movie relatively fresh out of school as a lighter. It was a wild ride, palpable excitement from all the talented artists working on it, for most all of us, our first feature film, as you pointed out, people who had been at the studio for a long time were working towards this for ages. Such a major leadership change last minute though, it was literally being written, rewritten, and arted while we were working on it. I recall lighting one of the first scenes on the farm and realized there were no trees and someone had to quickly come up with a new tree system within a week because it was originally going to be more looney toon style but we already needed to be finaling shots. Sequences were worked on, taken almost to completion, then rewritten, then changed again by Fox. That moment in the studio in the final hour where the pizza was suddenly reskinned to be Chuck E Cheese because of a last minute sponsorship tied into a commercial deal, lol. It's not much, but it's pretty respectable what such a small team pulled off in such a short amount of time and with absolutely no stability. Great research by the way, you really found a lot of back story that I had partially forgotten about. One bitter note at the end, leadership promised the first million of profit to go back to the staff who had worked lots of over time to pull the movie off, but they then decided to double down on the marketing budget to try and compete with Frozen. Poof. I'm going to enjoy some Turkey tomorrow.

Thankfully, doubling down on the marketing budget backfired on leadership because successfully competing with Frozen was impossible, so that studio suffered the karma it deserved for breaking its promise to your staff since most of its audience in a year, already forgot about a movie that kept getting arbitrarily changed and rewritten at a moment's notice. November 29, 2024, 8:32pm (groan) This is why Hoodwinked's director, Cory Edwards was good at taking consistent production seriously and sticking to a tight budget. The animation staff had to stick to animating one finalized draft of the script because they did not even have the budget for script revisions, but in general it is really good for any film, live-action or animated, to stick to a consistent script and not re-write it every week even if they have the budget to make new scenes, because re-shoots are usually more expensive than we think.
Reel FX is probably also the company behind Chuck E. Cheese’s rebranding at the time with them redesigning their mascots and possibly their brand aesthetic! :)

I actually was aware of this movie way before Schaffrillas made it a meme. I must of been like 8 or 9, but I remember my family scrolling on demand for our TV trying to find a movie to watch, and when we came across this movie, we watched the trailer to see what it was about. We didn’t watch it that day, and I didn’t watch it until the meme took flight, but the one line that stuck with me from that trailer, was the one line that can most easily summarize the entire movie, and the one that most people would think of when hearing about it. I would quote it here, but you already know what it is. Once you hear it, you don’t need to know anything else about the movie. Once I heard it in the trailer, I knew this movie was something else.
Even as a kid, i wondered "Wow, a movie with that style of animation would be fantastic!". I never thought in a million years that FREE BIRDS was originally gonna be the movie to do that. This was very insightful, and while I do like the movie we got, the original version could've been a genuine classic.

It is a very common Hollywood practice to have a nobody Animation director to lead a FAILING film project when the original director quits or the studio sees the film script as a "lost cause". "Jonah Hex" was originally written by the Directing duo behind the Crank films and Ghost Rider 2. They saw how bad the film was turning out and left the project, refusing to direct the film. This has also happened to Andrew Stanton (Finding Nemo director) who got stuck directing "John Carter". This has happened to Chris Sanders (Lilo & Stitch and How to Train Your Dragon) who got stuck with "call of the wild". This has happened to Brad Bird (Iron Giant and Incredibles) who got stuck with "Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol", which ended up actually being a success in which his live action career died with his REAL film project "Tomorrowland". This has happened to Andrew Adamson (Shrek and Shrek 2) who got stuck directing "The Chronicles of Narnia", which ended up being a big success. Its not always a death sentence when a nobody animator gets stuck directing a live action film that nobody wants to touch, but 90% of the time it most certainly is.
I worked at Chuck E. Cheese's when this movie came out. I was forced to try to hype kids up for Free Birds with these ugly rubber bracelets. I don't think it worked.

This is an interesting take on the what if scenario. On one hand, we could have gotten a stylized animated movie that wouldn’t have gotten much attention till Spider-Verse came out. But on the other hand, we wouldn’t have gotten a classic meme filled movie that was overshadowed by Frozen and completely forgotten till the shiny crab praised the movie for Jake telling the audience that they’re going back in time to the first Thanksgiving to get turkeys off the menu.
After listening to the history behind this film I realize that this movie had so much potential to be a classic, with cartoon features and it doesn't take itself seriously, but due to the executive meddling and corporate decisions this film had no chance of becoming a really good movie, and that's ashame.
I watched this movie for the first time recently. While it's not a masterpiece, I still really enjoyed it. It was quite funny, and I thought the actors did a really good job. It's amazing how even with all the production troubles, it still ended up being really good. But it is sort of a weaker version of Chicken Run.
At least the movie has the classic quote: "Were going back in time to first Thanksgiving to get turkey OFF the menu" Oh Quick side note: I think the reason why Chuck E Cheese was part of the movie was because They were promoting the movie Not to mention (No joke) Reel FX were working on some Chuck E Cheese commercials when the movie was being made But it would pretty cool to see what the Looney Tunes style version of Free Birds would have been like if we got that version instead of what we got

Honestly this movie was fine for me when it came out I watched it a lot as a kid even not on thanks giving but that’s probably because it was a random movie my parents bought for me to see and hoped it would entertain me which it did which I guess is fine but I definitely have some memory’s from this movie also I’m only just realizing that Owen Wilson plays Reggie so adding it to the list of roles he played in my favorite childhood movies like night at the museum cars and a few others

It is a very common Hollywood practice to have a nobody Animation director to lead a FAILING film project when the original director quits or the studio sees the film script as a "lost cause".
"Jonah Hex" was originally written by the Directing duo behind the Crank films and Ghost Rider 2.
They saw how bad the film was turning out and left the project, refusing to direct the film.
This has also happened to Andrew Stanton (Finding Nemo director) who got stuck directing "John Carter".
This has happened to Chris Sanders (Lilo & Stitch and How to Train Your Dragon) who got stuck with "call of the wild".
This has happened to Brad Bird (Iron Giant and Incredibles) who got stuck with "Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol", which ended up actually being a success in which his live action career died with his REAL film project "Tomorrowland".
This has happened to Andrew Adamson (Shrek and Shrek 2) who got stuck directing "The Chronicles of Narnia", which ended up being a big success.
Its not always a death sentence when a nobody animator gets stuck directing a live action film that nobody wants to touch, but 90% of the time it most certainly is.
I worked at Chuck E. Cheese's when this movie came out. I was forced to try to hype kids up for Free Birds with these ugly rubber bracelets. I don't think it worked.

This is an interesting take on the what if scenario. On one hand, we could have gotten a stylized animated movie that wouldn’t have gotten much attention till Spider-Verse came out. But on the other hand, we wouldn’t have gotten a classic meme filled movie that was overshadowed by Frozen and completely forgotten till the shiny crab praised the movie for Jake telling the audience that they’re going back in time to the first Thanksgiving to get turkeys off the menu.

After listening to the history behind this film I realize that this movie had so much potential to be a classic, with cartoon features and it doesn't take itself seriously, but due to the executive meddling and corporate decisions this film had no chance of becoming a really good movie, and that's ashame.

I watched this movie for the first time recently. While it's not a masterpiece, I still really enjoyed it. It was quite funny, and I thought the actors did a really good job. It's amazing how even with all the production troubles, it still ended up being really good. But it is sort of a weaker version of Chicken Run.

Honestly this movie was fine for me when it came out I watched it a lot as a kid even not on thanks giving but that’s probably because it was a random movie my parents bought for me to see and hoped it would entertain me which it did which I guess is fine but I definitely have some memory’s from this movie also I’m only just realizing that Owen Wilson plays Reggie so adding it to the list of roles he played in my favorite childhood movies like night at the museum cars and a few others

Man, I had no idea Free Birds was gonna be more like Looney Tunes with a Terminator pig.
