Thorfinn didnt beat Thorkell in a 1v1. Askeladd cheated on his behalf. My friends and I watched this together and we had a debate on it and came to the following conclusions: Vinland saga is an anime where 99.99% of the population are normal humans with human limits and fights go by who has the better skill/equipment. The setting considers itself a normal historical fantasy. But.. 0.01% of the population are born with what we call 'anime physics'. Hence why Thorkell can throw entire trees as siege weapons with his bare hands and Thorfinn can wade through a squad of armoured warriors with nothing but dagger and jump and defy physics like inertia on a dime while stabbing through chainmail with a casual arm swipe. These people who have 'anime physics' learn they have it early on but never call attention to it. Askeladd realized he had anime physics but understood he had a low grade of it, but uses his genius intellect to make the best use of it. Even low grade anime bs was enough to defeat the entire kings guard. Thors realized he had anime physics but decided it was immoral to continue to use it vs helpless normals so went in to hiding. Thorkell realizes he has it and can identify other people who have it if he see's them in action and absolutely revels in it, he's having a blast defying physics like punching out charging horses and pinballing normal humans and using trees as personal siege weapons. Thorfinn is just too dumb to realize he has anime physics but subconsciously understands he can attack a whole castle on his own and win.
This is an awesome take man. I'm glad it made for some conversation with your friends. That's the whole point! I agree with your conclusions, when someone has "anime physics", obviously they could beat 99% of people who don't. The interesting part is what Thorkell says. Basically, not because someone has more anime physics means that person would lose against someone who has more... Strategy plays a hugee role, and I thinks this is true not only for Vinland but for Fighting games, tennis, etc
I agree that practically speaking that's what's going on if we go about judging the comparative abilities of characters if they existed in a real world with consistent physical rules, however the truth is they don't exist in a world with consistent rules and anime physics give out or amp up whenever it's narratively convenient in order to justify the vibe of a character and their faculties.
Thorfinn not too dumb, he could enter the flow state to see Thorkell movement but lack strength and weapon advantage to deliver a fatal blow. Askeladd even pointed Thorfinn weakness which is his hot headed nature that could easily be exploited by him, even Thorkell unintentionally provoke Thorfinn by asking the true warrior meaning and Thorfinn realized it as a cheap trick, yet when Askeladd did it, he took the bait. Also, I think Thorfinn spend more of his anime physics points on dexterity than strength. In the season 2, we see that Thorfinn get more muscular due to slave work in Ketil farm and his punch alone easily dislocate jaw, but not enough to beat Snake tho, because he restraint himself this time with a pacifist philosophy. As for Askeladd, I won't said it as a low grade tho, since he could broke Thors' sword during their duel (I don't think blow fractures and slashing technique alone could break a steel like a twig tho) and he can cut a man vertically with a sword from head (which is protected by an iron helmet, mind you) to bottom long before his last stand. He could just let his anger drive him, but he didn't want make his former men using bows and arrows because he just too strong for them in meelee combat. Beside, he like to be in control rather than fighting like a beast, that's what separated him from the typical savage viking, something that he hated so much.
bro you have a point, like in pokemom water type beats fire, fire type beats grass and grass type beats water. But Thorfinn is stronger than askalaad, just that he gets very emotional and askalaad uses taunting to goad him into a mistake
Bro, like you, I love Vinland Saga. I know that Thorfinn could beat Asklaad if he didn't get so emotional. My point wasn't like the Pokemon trianlge, it's not "Rock, Paper, Scissors". My point is what Thorkell said... Even though someone might be "stronger", that doesn't mean that they are gonna win. Ranking people is interesting in paper, but in practice, strategy plays a huge role. Also, I think this applies to other things, not only Vinland. Thank you for watching the video, and leaving a comment! Hope you have an awesome day!
Yh I feel that at equal skill the outcome of a fight is a toss up most of the time. Thorfinn is small and fast and Thorkell has trouble with those types of fighters. Askeladd has been that small fighter before but also knows thorfinn very well and thus exploits that. Thorkell is strength incarnate but unlike thorfinn is too old and experienced to lose his cool in a fight.
Exactlyyy you got it!. My point was that strength is not linear. When 2 fighters have a similar skill level, other factos make more impact, like strategy, for example.
Its kinda odd to say..but vinland saga writes as well as "Bleach "in how strength is gained and how they deconstruct the MC and the growth from that is amazing
Not exactly. What I meant is that "more power" only matters when the difference is huge. When the levels are around the same, anybody can beat anyone with good strategy. The point is that strength is not linear. Thank you for watching the video and leaving a comment!
Thanks man! I like to see that people are enjoying the content! I'm trying to upload every Wednesday, so more stuff coming soon. Thank you for watching the video and leaving a comment. Have an awesome dayy
Your channel's ideas are very high quality. These ideas are very well fleshed out and the script is written well.

Yujiro no diffs
Yeah, having a bigger number in a calculator is a very boring concept compared to strategy, or having both strong and weak points.
Love this comment man. Someone who got it!
