They are anti-tank bomblets - If the cluster is dropped on a column of say ten tanks theoretically ten tanks can be knocked out in one go. The bomblets are all shaped charges and although small - each weighs like 2kg, they are strong enough to punch through the roof armour on say a tank's engine bay.
Awesome vid some cool shots lmfao when you smashed your prop on that IL2 It happens to me too often like aiming at ground targets too long and hitting trees :P .. that never happens ..Cough ..Cough.. hardly never :)
Cheers :) There was one vid I should have included, which was an IL-2 wing came tumbling back after I shot it off and the damn thing is made of steel and it collided with my fw and basically chopped it in half lol.
Yes i have been hit by parts too ... what a beast the 190 is, never fly it never knew they had double gun pods available geez thats sick firepower !!
It really is awesome firepower, I can see why they started to replace the Stuka wit it. If I was a Stuka pilot, I'd want to upgrade to a 190, because it is faster and can outrun a pursuer on ground attack missions.
I think better survive ability across the board,guys like Central and others pick it over the 109 for all the obvious reasons ...I just love the 109s since EAW I cant make the jump :)

were these gun pods used on the FW on the western front? in air to air combat with allied bombers?
I would say the main motivation to develop the cannon-pods would have been the appearance of heavy bombers over Germany.
From what I have read the FW had Cannon pods as well as rocket tubes to attack allied bombers over Germany. these were retro fitted as the factory armament was not enough to down a B-17 in one pass. As allied escort fighters could fly all the way to Germany late in the War these gun pods lowered the manuverability of the FW making them less effective as bomber intercepters.
The use of the gun pods in your wonderful movie, you have an FW with the gun pods designed to kill tanks as the FW was not a high altitude fighter.
But in this situation the FW is going against the IL- Stormavicks that were very suseptible to any German fighter if unescourted. The FW was placed in ground attack role by 1943 as the STUKA was too slow and vulnrable to allied fighterrs. The FW became the STIKA's main replacement even attacking English ports long after the Battle of Britton. Some took on night attacks over London. More ground support roles for the FW were in France after the D-Day invasion.
Hmm I might have to try the FW out on some T34s. lol. Yeh thats it and they tried bolting mortar tubes with single projectiles in them on to the wings which caused too much parasite drag, so they then developed better wing mounted projectiles such as the R4M rocket and I think quite a few other exotic air to air unguided rockets, which I assume would have had both detonation on impact and also after travelling a pre-set distance.I imagine if a salvo of 10 or more R4ms were loosed towards a B17G, it would be quite effective.
This modification actually was for heavy bombers. The 4x20mm gun pods were installed in only a few Fw190s but they did see action. What would usually happen is that Fw190As would get escorted into battle by Bf109s and Fw190Ds, and then they would focus on bombers while the other fighters covered them

There we go again, "hunting" pigeons with more guns. (As if 4/20mm and 2/15mm weren't enough.) But this time, there's a tiny bit of danger, since these IL-2s have myopic rear gunners. Still a boring mission, with the added drama of a crash landing because you got too close to a disintegrating aircraft.

Sorry, I went from flight simulators to role playing games to music and video long before Y2K. (Microsoft Flight Simulator 1, Chuck Yeager's Air Combat, Lucas Arts Battle of Britain, Battlehawks 1942) Ye Olde Flightstick is somewhere in the closet, along with my ancient Pentium 3 tower clone computer. I did the Space combat simulators such as "Wing Commander"/X-Wing/TIE Fighter back then. (Call me "Keyand Farlander.";) After that, Roger Wilco, Indiana Jones and "The Dig" finished the RPG years. I also prowled Castle Wolfenstein and Doom for a while.
