I just want to say that I found your channel by accident. I love you, your style and your videos. After watching your videos I had to get started on purchasing myself a receiver and got myself a super cool 80s Onkyo like you suggested in one of your videos. I love music and have toyed with idea of getting into this hobby for a while. You reignited that desire and I’m on my way. Thank you so much for your passion. Much love from the U.K my friend.
The advice about sealing items in plastic after purchasing is spot on. I bought a pair of D9 speakers years back from a "shady" person, and he threw in mice for free! My wife was real happy.
I worked in terrestrial radio for nearly years. Radio isn't dying it's damn near dead. The telecommunications act of 1996 is what killed it. Prior to this act the number of radio and tv stations anyone could own in any given market was regulated. The number of locally owned stations was high and so was the variety of formats and competition for better and better programming. After 1996 those restrictions were removed and the doors were opened for corporations to sweep in and buy all the stations they wanted. In the market I worked in there were half a dozen owners each being restricted to operating no more than 2 stations... one FM and one AM. Soon however there were just two or three media corporations that owned nearly every radio station in the country. Cumulus and Citadel owned nearly everything in our market. Our station was (and still is) owned by a local family who operates 4 stations in the city I live in and another 4 in a nearby city. The rest are controlled by media conglomerates. What that did to radio is that both air and sales staffs were fired. A single DJ could record a 4 hour show that would air on a dozen or more stations in just 20 minutes. So this one person would record a country show, then a classic rock show, etc., etc. and each show was uploaded to the network to be aired in different markets. Sales staffs were replaced by a handful of marketers who sold blocks of ads for multiple markets. Each local station would retain one or two sales people to service the local businesses. I retired from broadcasting 6 years ago and find that there is far better broadcasting happening at Sirius XM. The DJ's there are doing what I was taught and strived to do 40 years ago and they are doing 99% better than the terrestrial broadcasters today. These new voices on the radio are not being taught how to create and deliver compelling content. They are just there to fill a time slot.
I am thankful that as a teenager radio was hot. I didn't own much music so radio was the medium for many of us in the 70's & 80's. I wonder if the President would consider shaking radio back to its roots? I'd love that.😊
On your recommendation I purchased a restored Pioneer SX-850 and love it. I added a restored Pioneer CT-F9191 cassette deck along with a restored PL41 turntable. On your recommendation I also grabbed some JBL Century L100 speakers and everything is amazing! Thank you for getting me back into HiFi stereo.
The Rotel RA-1412. I loved that amplifier. I was 16 when I got one of those, initially driving a huge three way DIY speaker running a 12" bass driver, 5" mid, Dalesford drivers that basically were like Kef at the time. Later running Nightingale NM-1 three way transmission lines. Personally it hit like a truck, was an absolute beast to house due to the size and weight, but man, I could not put that thing off, I was continually playing music, buying cassette decks, speakers, tuners and turntables while playing with that thing during it's life with me. 110w into 8 ohms, dampening factor of 80. VU meters went up to around 300w if I remember. Sadly it blew, and what blew it was surprising, my friend played with CB's, he came around, popped the ariel out the window, I lived high up at the time, and every time he clicked the MIC, there was a small pop from the speakers. At first we were looking around wondering what the hell it, was, we went silent, he clicked the mic, and a pop came through the speaker, then a louder snap like pop came from the amplifier, no smell, no noise, simply on but silent. A local electronics repair guy at 1st gave me some fuses to try, I was only 16 so not going to be doing anything, he had a look at it later when the fuses proved futile, and he could not sort it for me, some part he could not get a hold of, I could not work it out. It sat for years, eventually went to landfill. It had to be replaced with a few cheaper similar amps before I got the Harman Kardon HK-725/770 pre/power, I even bought an Awai AD-2000 with VU meters to go with that, as it was the same width, and had the Technics SL-5 Linear tracking direct drive, from previous, but it was bright red. The Harman Kardon was not in the same league, but I made a mistake and traded those in for a Sansui amp that I ended up enjoying less, then big Pioneers and Technics 90's amps before getting really into what would be deemed audiophile. I have never seen another mint Rotel RA-1412 second had available to me at a price I would deem reasonable. It is still something I would love for the nostalgia, maybe even in the second system. But the prices and availability to the UK are pretty crazy.
I picked up an inexpensive Onkyo TX-910 (early 90's era) after that last video, just to have something to plug my vintage tapedeck and turntable into--it sounds great, and the tuner is surprisingly good for not having an antenna hooked up to it (yet).
Missed your show this morning I was out flying my planes. Just finished watching another great show Kevin, and Erik see you the end of this month. Skylabs should be on everyone's bucket list. js
Deltronics in Woodridge, Illinois. His shop is extremely busy, 4-6 weeks turnaround time. I recently acquired a Teac 4010s reel to reel tape deck. I took it apart to clean out the various nests. Put it back together before bringing it in. Works like new.
I would again suggest considering either a late 70's Vector Research VR-5000 (45wpc) or VR-7000 (65wpc) receiver. Very nice robust build, more like discrete circuitry vs IC's. Clean layout inside. Big transformer. Nice clicking detent all-metal black knobs and nice feel heavy tuning flywheel. Anodized metal faceplate. Also kind of unique dark color and Made in Japan. Great sound. I bought mine new 45yrs ago, and only needed one cleaning of controls, as other components still tested in spec. And VERY affordable working examples in nice shape on ebay or hifi Shark, Reverb, other resellers.
I have a JVC JR-S301 with the EQ. Haha. Now my only issue is that the 15kHz Slider doesn’t work. BUT I’m 72, a former professional trumpet player in big loud horn bands and a retired music educator with close encounters with cymbals in loud percussion sections, so I don’t think I can hear anything above 12.5 kHz anyway 😂😂 I bought mine because it was only $60. 60 wpc@8 ohms and it has pre in and outs. A dollar a watt seemed like a good deal. But I can see an issue with those sliders versus rotary potentiometers. XRayTonyb is an excellent technician who does all sorts of electrical repair on almost anything electrical. He’s a Medical Equipment Technician and his presentations are always wonderful teaching videos. Any experience in your shop with the Acoustic Research AU Integrated Amplifier?
Kevin, ebay has other trickiness, if you search for "amplifier" you might miss listings that used "amp" to not get too long, etc. ebay used to allow "wildcarding" but that's different now. best not to include "integrated" either, both because some people don't include it, and some people misspell it as "intergrated."
Denon had some very nice early 80s receivers (DRA-700) and integrated amps (PMA-757). I suspect units in decent condition might be less available then some
I like for sellers that have great feedback. I also look at the least expensive vintage units first as sometimes they cost less because of few scuffs or very minor problems. Also some sellers just don't know enough about the unit and price them just to sell without making a huge profit. Rotel and Onkyo sell for less then their counterparts and might sound quite nice. I ask the seller how does it sound, static, hum, etc. 'sleepers'. All vintage units are going to have some problems but the less is better. Some sellers say the unit was just serviced but what kind service was done on the unit ?? Just picked up a very nice Onkyo a-8067 intagrated for 60.00 - great sound, no hum, static, some scuffs and missing the speaker selector knob - no big deal.
Kevin, if you're not seeing things come in, the most likely reason could be that people want to hold onto them. Suggesting that maybe you should go looking for them. Although it's also true that names like Rotel and Tandberg didn't sell as many units as Pioneer to start with.
I bought a Pioneer sx-1000tw as my first project then come to learn cap coupled stereos are not for the beginner... only have 100$ in it local pickup with a set of Cerwin vega R-26's that I've replaced the tweeters and today was about to do the foam surrounds on the 12s but the surrounds are not the correct size...
So is it the pre-amp or the amp stage that gives that 70s flavor sound? I have a pioneer sx-950. I could use a larger amp but don’t want to loose the sound. Thanks
Ever heard of a voxson receiver I had one back in the '70s it sounded fantastic till my buddy shorted out one of the speaker terminals and blew the outputs nothing was compatible at the time I never saw another one since it sounded fantastic it's Italian made
I just got a set of KG2’s and a Pioneer SX 838 the speakers have been gone thru looks like someone may have tried staining them but that can be fixed they work fantastic the Pioneer is cosmetically really nice it may need a good going thru in the future I’m looking for a tech in eastern Iowa I’m about 3 hrs from Des Moines
Kevin, ebay listings are tricky for sellers. If you just say something is "used" ebay rules specify that must mean "fully functional" so if there turns out to be even a minor issue that the seller didn't discover, they may be liable for a refund. "Parts or repair" is the only way for ebay sellers to really protect themselves.
I bought a nice 1978 era JVC JA-S22 amp, 40WPC, more than adequate to power my living room stereo setup. No integrated EQ. Attractive silver face unit with two meters. Got to admit I am a sucker for faceplate meters. JVC gets zero love, but I like this amp and it is under appreciated so available at lower cost. Bought locally for $150, so I avoided shipping and eBay premium. On these more consumer level products, if you are patient, you will find one at a reasonable price. It's irritating when eBay sellers sell them as untested. To me, untested means parts only.
My first audio component (1971) was a JVC receiver - the 5550. It had a 5-band equalizer and, like many receivers of that era, it was built like the proverbial tank. I traded it in years ago but still have the manual.
Tape decks. Reel, cassette, 8 track. We know Skylabs doesn't want to buy or sell or repair or even talk about them. We get it, but magnetic tape is a huge part of the vintage audio community. Yes, we remember the episode where you were organizing cassettes, and comparing a high dollar reel recording to other formats. A kind suggestion, take this medicine, and carry on.
Thanks for the video keeps me inspired check out this album kak it's a great psych record I always look for equipment but I'm not buying anymore I got too much junk have a great day I'll keep watching I guess next repair is a Kenwood KR 9600 it works it just needs some work power packs are good that's a good thing
Unfortunate about the status of FM radio these days although it doesn't really affect me. I've been a regular listener of non-profit radio stations for many years. Most of them except one station located to the left of 92Mhz. They play all kinds of music on a regular basis. I also listen to streaming stations via Winamp and Vlan such as Alex Jones, Jeff Rense, Art Bell, and certain music channels. I use tablets and hooked them up to the aux or tape in of amp or receiver.
The JVC JA-S41 (60WPC) build is a little inferior to the likes of the Pioneer SA 8500 (60 WPC), Kenwood KA 7100 (60 WPC), ... but I have the three units. Of the 3, my JVC gives me by far a better audio listening experience and is well worth the money I spent. I have tried finding the JVC JA-S71. You are right; parts are an issue, and the inscription on the JVC washes off easily.
I have a matching JA-S71 and JT-V71 pair, plus matching JA-S77 and JT-V77, plus JA-S55 and JT-V22 (there was no 55 tuner), and more. Also I prefer JVC cassette decks with Sendust Alloy heads, everything else sounds like mud by comparison.
I have a Rotel RA 1070 integrated amplifier that has been an excellent performer very reliable no issues it's over a hundred DB signal noise ratio and when I use my NAD CD player which is also over a hundred The sound is incredible and I play it through a set of JBL century 100s that I've had forever The Rotel is 105 Watts per channel by the way 20:3021:38
You're right I really like luxman a few years back I picked up a luxman R17 receiver it needed work it was dropped and it was in a flood yeah I got it going it sounds fantastic it's really nice but it was a lot of work the guy bought it from he bought it at a state sale and he couldn't repair electronics I got a cheap but it was many painstaking hours but it's up and running now I had to take breaks and then get back to it a few weeks later cuz I couldn't just burn out on it and a few other Luck's been things too that are nice this everything sounds good and build quality is fantasticHave a great day
I have a few Luxman pieces, including a Laboratory Reference Series (LRS) set with 5T10 analog tuner, 5C50 preamp, 5M21 power amp... very happy. Many of the Luxman cassette decks used JVC's Sendust Alloy heads, which are important. Everything else sounds like mud by comparison.
Always been odd, in my mind, how jvc is such a hassle with both build quality and aftercare, considering their origins; thus the name: Japan Victor Company, once a subsidiary of Radio Corporation of America (RCA) ...thru their aquired branch Victor Talking Machine Company, who started jvc in 1927 ...
But JVC amps etc are wonderful, I have several, and JVC produced most of their cassette decks with Sendust Alloy heads which are the way to go. Anything else sounds like mud in comparison.
Thanks @@kerryedaviswill have to take your word on that. Have seen (not owned) some innovative products, like a mini system with a liquid crystal touch screen remote, back in the '80's ...
Not many people work on B&O I do sound Smith does I do it for myself people want me to fix their stuff that stuff's really hard to work on you got to be mentally focused to do it and I'm old geezer so I really got to be in the mood that stuff looks cool and I'm receivers do sound good those speakers sound fantastic the best thing about b&o are there speakers thanks again🙃
Any thoughts on theses brands Crown, Adcom, NAD, Linn, Carver, Bryston, Sony ES, Dennon. Phaselaner, audio source, manaplaner speakers I would travel to Wisconsin Rapids in my high school year to visit a Stereo store call Salon One 3 rooms expensive , more expensive and don’t ask how expensive - get time
I can’t understand how some of these Tandberg receivers demand that kind of money. Not knocking the brand, but I’ve heard them, and I just don’t see the money there.
Colorado here .How about doing some 1980s and 90s units. Are they silver? No but they still sound very good.Your ignoring twenty years of good vintage hifi.
The JA-S11 is I think the lowest model amp JVC ever made at that time. Nobody should be looking for those now, unless it's just to finish a collection.
This bothers me!...What is your opinion of an item closing on a "No Reserve Bidding" with 1 hr left and it has 1 bid whey over priced and you know the seller has placed it as a hidden bid?
I sold a pioneer sx 880 perfect working. Also sent pictures of it working to his personal email. Gets it and comments wow this thing sounds good. Next day after changing lights says problem with phono. Deox then says working again. Next day not working again wants money back I said nope. He sends it back to me after putting lights back. I argue my case with eBay showing them his comments and how he took it apart. I win. I got to keep the $600 and they paid him and took the loss. Pioneer worked perfectly after I got it back lol. Everything worked I sold it locally for $600 doubling my money lol. Watch out for the assholes you’ve been warned. I’m done selling on eBay never again
Had a similar experience on marketplace with a old yamaha dvd player I quickly tested worked good then posted for $50 old guy bought it said the player and remote didn't work I said it all worked well he brought it back and I gave him 40 back this time I completely tested everything on it the only thing I could find was it didn't play this old bur t cd I had but played everything else sent the guy a video to prove him wrong then sold it again
I’m saw the live show. I thought the highlight was the talk and showing of the Rotel RA-1412. Thought you live show was a good idea but after the fact, I wished both of you would have interacted with the live chat more… but maybe that wasn’t your objective.

nicely done Kevin, just a ton of fun to watch / hear your thinking process etc re buying units on the fly.
i didn’t get to watch it live but enjoyed watching the replay. looking forward to more of these!
Deltronics in Woodridge, Illinois. His shop is extremely busy, 4-6 weeks turnaround time. I recently acquired a Teac 4010s reel to reel tape deck. I took it apart to clean out the various nests. Put it back together before bringing it in. Works like new.

I loved the X00 receivers, but the X01s had that stenciled lettering that came off way too easily.
I find a lot from eBay. I like it. Love your shows from Fresno California
Enjoyed this livestream while making breakfast. Thanks for this and the Nakamichi video reference. I have 3 and would enjoy their history.

Thanks, kevin! Now handwired fans perv pioneer vintage!
The JVC JA-S41 (60WPC) build is a little inferior to the likes of the Pioneer SA 8500 (60 WPC), Kenwood KA 7100 (60 WPC), ... but I have the three units.
@@kerryedavis Nice, I have the tuner JT-V71, just waiting to snag a good priced amp.
@@edwardbagu1252 It might be easier to find a matching pair of the 77s. And then you get power meters too.
@ true, I love the meters, I have a JA-S22/JT-V22. My JA-S41/ is matched a JT-V41 tuner.
@@edwardbagu1252 I also have the 11 and 31 pairs, but they're not for serious use.
Harman Kardon VXi series are awesome.
What has been your experience with Dahlquist dq 20's?
I have a Rotel RA 1070 integrated amplifier that has been an excellent performer very reliable no issues it's over a hundred DB signal noise ratio and when I use my NAD CD player which is also over a hundred The sound is incredible and I play it through a set of JBL century 100s that I've had forever The Rotel is 105 Watts per channel by the way 20:30 21:38
You're right I really like luxman a few years back I picked up a luxman R17 receiver it needed work it was dropped and it was in a flood yeah I got it going it sounds fantastic it's really nice but it was a lot of work the guy bought it from he bought it at a state sale and he couldn't repair electronics I got a cheap but it was many painstaking hours but it's up and running now I had to take breaks and then get back to it a few weeks later cuz I couldn't just burn out on it and a few other Luck's been things too that are nice this everything sounds good and build quality is fantasticHave a great day
I have a few Luxman pieces, including a Laboratory Reference Series (LRS) set with 5T10 analog tuner, 5C50 preamp, 5M21 power amp... very happy. Many of the Luxman cassette decks used JVC's Sendust Alloy heads, which are important. Everything else sounds like mud by comparison.
Always been odd, in my mind, how jvc is such a hassle with both build quality and aftercare, considering their origins; thus the name:
Japan Victor Company, once a subsidiary of Radio Corporation of America (RCA) ...thru their aquired branch Victor Talking Machine Company, who started jvc in 1927 ...
I like the show but no way do I have time to watch this. Ill just have to take your word for it this time.

Are there or is there anyone know of 1152DC Marantz amp available? Thanks , oh would like to find a pair of HD770 ' s too....
I can’t understand how some of these Tandberg receivers demand that kind of money. Not knocking the brand, but I’ve heard them, and I just don’t see the money there.
Levels good

Please Please do a Mug!
The JA-S11 is I think the lowest model amp JVC ever made at that time. Nobody should be looking for those now, unless it's just to finish a collection.
No mga?
Project/one mark xxii integrated amp
This bothers me!...What is your opinion of an item closing on a "No Reserve Bidding" with 1 hr left and it has 1 bid whey over priced and you know the seller has placed it as a hidden bid?
"DUST" on LP
I bought a Yamaha a500 amp off the bay and lucked out. Superior piece
Are y'all fb - centric with your live chat? Notice this (RUclips) comment stream isn't part of your broadcast
I don't want anything to do with fb
Right there with you,@@user-mv5bu2kk8b
I’m saw the live show. I thought the highlight was the talk and showing of the Rotel RA-1412. Thought you live show was a good idea but after the fact, I wished both of you would have interacted with the live chat more… but maybe that wasn’t your objective.
