I use speedlites all the time with octaboxes and strip boxes for professional shoots, and I’ve never had a complaint from a client. I love these videos.
I started 12yrs ago with a second hand 5Dii I needed a lens and couldn't afford the canon 24-70 2.8 so went with the Tamron sp 24-70 2.8. Still using the same gear today. Still make a few quid every now and again ;)
I’ve used speedlights for over 50 years, learning how to use them assisting wedding photographer/teacher Monte Zucker who introduced using off-camera flash to shooting weddings back in the early 1970s when photographers were switching from B&W to color prints in wedding albums and struggling with exposing detail in white wedding dress and black suits in the same photo. He applied the technique long used in studio photography, always having a foundation of even ‘skylight’ like shadowless fill to lift the entire scene to the point shadow detail was recorded then overlapping the off-axis key light which does the 3D modeling. We shot with fill flash mounted on a bracket directly above lens and I’ve done the same with every digital camera I’ve owned since 2000 with the same Stroboframe camera-flip bracket which keeps the flash in the same place relative to lens in both landscape and portrait mode. I started using Canon ETTL flash which allows dialing in the ratios in 2004 finding that a A:B ratio of 1:2 would record a full range of detail. With Fill over the camera on a bracket directly above the lens you don’t even need to think about it, just move the off camera flash(es), and dial in the ratio to control how dark/hard or light/soft the shadows look.
completely agree with you, because I have been working with speedlights for a long time and I am totally happy with the results. I hope it encourages other photographers to do the same with this equipment and not to think that only the big bazooka will bring great success.Greets
Love your work and agree there is so much jargon especially on youtube so many user’s just bagging gear. I went to a Nikon speed light launch years ago and they had one of their ambassador’s there who was a corporate photograper travelling the world shooting coporate photo’s with speedlights his work was amazing needless to say after that i bought several nikon speedlights 😅. I have only recently transitioned to my first mirrorless camera in the fujifilm eco system as I wanted a smaller footprint, it was only a couple days ago was checking out the fuji speedlights.
OMG! Very nice work with just three basic speedlights! It goes to remind us that expensive gear and elaborate setups are not "do-or-die" necessary for most of the work a portrait photographer does. Plus, the model looks just like a real-life Bratz doll! I should know because I practice my lighting patterns with two of those I got for free. 😊
1:30. I have always had to school people who used to turn their nose up when they saw my kit lens. So I would show them some photos and asked them if they can tell what lens was used to take the photos. Of course they couldn’t. Also, I only use speed lights for everything I do. I did buy an AD600, but it is just gathering dust.
Nlce shoot set up. Liked yellow gels. Like to see your event set setup. I do lots of events. Tough getting good lighting with one speedlght. And working with mixed ambient light. Used quantum flash for while. Keep the videos going. Thanks
I paid only $600 for my 28-75 G2 on special, definitely worth the money. Worked great for a wedding I did recently, even under heavy cropping on my A7R IV it was still quite sharp! While I still prefer carrying the Sigma 24mm and 50mm f/2 primes most of the time, it can be nice to not deal with the lens swaps. Really cool to see how much the gels change the backdrop, gives me some ideas!
I don't do studio-style portraits often (mostly events) but realized that I'd need some lighting. I have a Godox V860iii and TT685ii with the former now my primary on-camera flash. I have a Godox 32x32 inch softbox, a Godox 48x12 inch stripbox and the Godox Speedlite Accessory Kit. I also have a number of Neewer 5-in-1 reflectors in various sizes. These allow me to undertake occasional portrait shoots and I'm happy with the results. The only area I feel I'm lacking in is backdrops, I need some highly-portable solution for that.
I always trust the older folks who've been professionals doing the job for decades. They know more and have seen it all, so whatever they say it's 99.9% of the time so true! Some of the younger folks simply repeat what they've heard or thought they heard before without having much experience.
nice tuto. I like magmod softbox and all magmod products except the stripbox. I purchased three and send them back because the opening and close is a nightmare due to the center ring and strong rods asymetrical due to the shape of stripbox and the ring twist before plugging and sometimes rods go out of the ring and after three repair they become floating. I switched to westcott rapidbox 1x4 ones
That is a fair point. It can be a nightmare. I kept trying to do the even push to lock open (which is impossible) but then found that it still works with one side going down first.
thanks. in my case it plugged inclined not at exactly right position and it was impossible to lay down the other edge of the ring. This is how i ejected rods from ring. Of course i succeeded several times but always sweating a lot to fail. very innovative ideas but bad design only due to asymetrical strengths in rod and ring due to 1x3 shape
Most speedlights are rated in guide numbers, so hard to compare to studio lights that most often are rated in Watt seconds (Ws), but the Godox V1 is rated as 76 Ws on its web page (one can assume that most other brands largest speedlight are about the same). 76 Ws is not that far from their smallest studio light, the AD100 (100 Ws).
Question: When you are using speedlights, do you point the flash towards the back of the softbox, etc. or just point it out towards the diffuser? I point it to the back so that it reflects then goes out thru the front. It isn't centered unfortunately, but it seems to work. Is this the best way or...? Just wondering.
Hello, thanks for this. I am impressed that little flashes can do this. I do not know how I can fit the back of a small speedlight flash into the back of a diffuser. Could you please provide me and others with the names of the diffusers and light stands and connectors for both flash and diffusers.
How about a super-budget 1 speedlight, 1 stand, 1 umbrella, 1 reflector shoot? I noticed most of the Magmod range is out of stock in the UK, is this normal worldwide or just a UK issue?

Thanks for the video. It reminds me of the old old saying that image quality doesn’t make a quality image.
Exactly.

Thank you and thanks for encouraging others to
I totally agree about keeping it "Simple n Affordable" n Have FUN !!!!!!!!! :) :) :)
One just needs to know how to use the lights, like you. The RUclips photographers, well... and its always great to see Bruna :D
This does make it a little easier to learn.

I've been using Godox flashes and remote trigger to great effect on my Fuji X-H1 cameras, with a variety of lenses.
@ yeah Godox has become increasingly popular over the years

It is always easy to convince ourselves that we need X to do Y. Use what you have. I’ll tell her. She will get a good laugh from that

Love Love the Sony Speed Light shoots!

For weddings I love the 28-75 - like you said it beats the lens swap. Def play with the gels. Can create some nice effects.

I love the X-Drop Pro from westcott for my portable backdrop

Well at my age I’m at the genius level. 😂😂
😊gracias
Which Tamron lens are you using? And, is it native Z or adapted FE? Have seen you use Nikon bodies in other videos. Thank you😊
I use the 28-75 FE and the 70-180 FE Both amazing lenses

These soft boxes only work with it pointed directly out. I have umbrella soft boxes that reflect and I do like that as well.

The link is in the description for these. Also check out the Angler FastBox.

Will do. I think the stock is good in the states.
