I am a 51 year old New Zealand woman and I have never met a Maori person who can't sing. When God was handing out talent, they got the lion's share and hearing a group singing together is absolutely breathtaking.
I unfortunately was NOT blessed with this talent.

My late step father was a musician. He explained that the first Maori concert party that toured Europe were initially regarded as a scam. Polynesians can sing in 1/4 notes which provides rounder, smoother, fuller, more flexible tones. Europeans can only sing in half notes. So the surprise is when Maori cannot hold a note.
