    I miss the sound of that Detroit. I used to ride an '87 Phantom back in middle school, but it was sent to the scrap yard a few years ago in accordance with ARB regulation. I'm glad you were able to save this one!

      They are becoming increasingly rare now. Most of these Phantom school buses have been sent to be crushed as part of a cleaner air emission program here in Southern California.

      6000beachboy That's what I'm referring to. It's a statewide regulation.

    Awesome bus. I'm a Crown guy, but this is my fav Gillig school bus look. The front (cap) look is amazing. Really nice find!

    I thought the rich and private schools only got to ride these buses they looked so fancy nice at the time still do. I wish I had the chance to ride in one of those in middle school a long time ago. School buses don't have that city bus looks often these days.

      The Thomas HDX does - the first one of those I was a passenger in was in 1977 (a chartered bus for a school field trip) - as does the Thomas EFX. (The Thomas ER and West-Coast ER were retired.) (There are MFSAB and TransitLiner versions of both the EFX and HDX - the University of Maryland has versions of the former in their shuttle fleet, and PGC DPWT has the TransitLiner versions - both are in my my home county of Prince George's in Maryland.)

    It looks a lot like a Wayne bus from around 1970. It would make a fantastic conversion.

    Excellent catch and if Gillih are making school buses to this day they would have been modified from the regular low floor transit version by having an stop arm amber lights retaining the transit versions low-floor ramp for easier loading of wheelchairs or students with crutches

    • @rosecitybusman129
      @rosecitybusman129 Год назад

      I would have a feeling that the Phantom would stay in production as a school bus since there isn’t any low floor buses.

    • @EpicThe112
      @EpicThe112 Год назад

      @rosecitybusman129 thank you for telling me about that so how about modifying the successor Gillig Low floor as a School bus? In theory it should work and finally give school buses accessibility via ramp rather than using a wheelchair lift on them.

      @@EpicThe112 I guess they can try to do that as a sped bus. I forgot that there is a low floor bus by Collins. It would be a unique bus for sure. It would work as sped.

    There is a more rare site than the crowns, I've never seen one of these in person before.

    that Gilligphantom school bus look like the city bus because of the body type from 1986- 93 with the 6v 92 TA Detroit diesel engine with the MT 648 Allison automatic transmission

      Gillig started out as a school bus builder, they entered the transit market in late 1982. Akron Metro (Ohio) got one of the first transit bus orders from Gillig in early 1983.

      Actually, the first prototype Gillig Phantom transit bus came out in 1980, but regular production and sale was not until 1981, and deliveries outside California didn't start until 1982 (also the same year the prototype 102" wide bus was produced). Kitsap Transit of Bremerton, WA, was another company that ordered this bus in 1983 (theirs, unusually, came with the 6V71TA engine instead of the 6V92TA).

    I would make money off of converting these buses to something better, putting Mercedes seats in it, putting a CAT diesel in it, re-wiring it, putting better heating and air conditioning
