I drove a 10 speed split Gillig school bus in Malibu, CA. Going down Encinal Cyn. without braking from the top to bottom of Canyon...it was so in sync that it would 'fall' into each gear when the rpms and speed matched..was smooth as butter...a pleasure to drive.

any manual transmission truck or bus should be able to do that or something's wrong. my international gas V8/5 speed bus could be shifted thruugh all the gears without using the clutch- that is until somebody using my bus for a field trip tore up the 5th gear synchro. it was never the same after that- you had to wait a second .... and then it would fall into gear nice. once i got familiar with it, I wasn't so angry about it. but I still don't think buses should ne shuffled amongst field trip drivers/driving. there's no accountabilty.....

San Dieguito High School in Encinitas CA
The Last Crown They Bought in about 1981 or 1982
They still had a few early 60's Crowns still in service.

I driven a 2012 International Prostar and it had a 10 speed manual, but now all of the freightliner trucks are now auto shifter. I miss driving a standard shifter.

Bad ass crown school bus rode in these for several years, I remember one afternoon a Honda civic was making a left turn as we were approaching the intersection the Honda had. Chance as we drove right over the hood and smashed half the car.

Gotta love the old Crown school buses. The school district I lived in had a whole fleet of those. Unfortunatly they don't have them any more, I wonder what they did with them? They also had some old Chevy buses as well.

Shift 2nd to 4th pull up button go to 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th, 10th. Don't have to use all the gears all the time-commonly called skip shifting.

My district STILL uses those buses. While I admire them from a technical standpoint, ours are in horrid condition and I just don't think they're very safe for transporting 80 kids. =(

@kimballfamilyproduct The hell they have. What makes you say that? MUSD, here in CA has quite a few of them still in use every day. So do neighboring school districts.

Steer withg all your might, no power steering on these ol
' beauties; shift nine times (five, pull range change peg on stick box to next level), clutch ten times (double clutch, clutch in, pause, clutch out 10 times over)..etc. and watch out for that dang traffic..not that there IS any...I'm guessing Detroit Disel 6V71 or 8V71..
