I happen to know alot about this bus because I worked on it until we sold it. She originally had a 270HP Detroit Diesel 6-71 Horz. with a 5 speed trans. Not so good when we went to mountains. So we repowered it with a 400HP Cummins Big Cam III NHHTC and a 10 speed road ranger trans. Yes that is the correct steering wheel for a 1988 TRW/Ross. It was keep very clean as you can see that's the condition we gave it to present ower. No School Bus was built better than a Crown Coach.
Very cool! I had the opportunity to ride this bus as well, and I remember that it was a very good riding bus. Crowns are definitely something else, thanks for sharing your knowledge on the bus!
I don't think ive ever noticed the drivers side mirror being tilted. I have one on an old cabover. Its amazing how well it works. Keep the cool videos coming.
Reminds me of my junior and high school days. I always liked riding on the Crown buses versus the other makes. I also liked the international made buses as well. They seem to climb hills easily!
The bus that put Crown Coach out of business 🤣 because of Kalifornia AQMB all of LAUSD Crowns went to the Scrap metal yard. Good by 3131 I still miss you today 20 years later.
I would've loved to have those buses the precise model. I'll just need a parking place. My eldest brother is a school bus driver. Atlantic Express, his company, went out of business. This one, several classrooms could be riding in this one!
This bus went to a private seller but that's about all I know. I'm hoping to be able to go to this years meetup (which is where this bus was at), and hopefully it'll be back there. I linked below a video of the ride along of this bus, as well as an album of pictures, there's a handful of that bus in there. ruclips.net/video/TU9YjT3l6lw/видео.html www.flickr.com/photos/60299469@N08/albums/72157698100567062
Thoughtful placement of the parking brake actually, probably with inquisitive little children in mind. Conventional placement would be too enticing not to monkey with.
There was one when I was in high school. I think I remember it being rear engine, but if it was than it was a rare bird. At least as far as the 3 axle goes.
@@nimbly1693 Tandem Axle referring to 2 rear axles. The front axle doesn't go into the equation. Its like tandem (2 rear) axle dump trucks or tri (3 rear) axle dump truck or quad (4 rear) axle dump truck.
@@Briebabcock8052 I've driven truck for 14 years now. I understand what a tandem axle is. A bus or straight truck with a single steer and tandems is a 3 axled vehicle. These buses are fairly rare because unlike a lot of transit style buses, these have dually tandems. 10 wheelers.
There are some collectors who actually have some of these in the East coast. but these were specifically designed for the West coast, mainly California. There's definitely a lot of really cool unique things specific to California though.
saftlinerc2 Yeah, I saw some for a really cheap price over there, anything like that over here in Alabama would go for a high price though. I’m a college student looking to convert one into a rustic motor home. It’s just way to hard to find anything aside from a recently decommissioned school bus for a cheap price. I’d like to find something that looks unique.
@@haydenbritt1237 Definitely hear ya on that. Look on Public surplus and GovDeals for cheap buses. They might not be as unique as Supercoachs, they're definitely going to be a lot cheaper than bringing it back to Alabama.
saftlinerc2 Heck Yeah, besides, I’ve been thinking about experimenting with bodywork, might find a way to give it a retro/atomic age vibe, on a budget of course 😂
Very nice! Do you start these by turning a key to the on position and then pushing a button to crank the engine over? I seem to remember watching the driver(s) doing that. However, correct me if I am wrong!
From what I know, California required tandem axles instead of the normal configuration on 90 passenger buses, I'm not exactly sure why. They definitely look cooler this way though!
Because of the axle weight laws , otherwise they would be too heavy for Cali . ( bridge formula ) I rode in a Supercoach back in elementary school, to this day ... It's #1 when it comes to school Busses!........
As school buses, no, they went out of business in the early 90s. That being said, you can still get these through places such as eBay, FB marketplace and Craigslist (check the west coast). Condition varies, but I see them there on a regular basis.
Unfortunately these are pretty hard to find, and since they're extremely reliable/collectible they usually run tens of thousands of dollars. You can sometimes find these on eBay, however FB marketplace and Craigslist are more likely to have these. I'd also recommend filtering your search results to California (Oregon and Washington State sometimes have some as well), since that's where the majority of these were.
Me llegan esos buses culo redondo acá en mi país Honduras les llaman sandia por su forma y se ven como clásicos de los 50s no de 1988 como dice el título

For a 1988 bus this has the lines and form of something out of the 1950's.
1988? boy, that bus looks like something out of the 50's.
No kidding! The design pretty much stayed the same for a VERY long time, but it's just so unique that I can't really knock it.
@@saftlinerc2 yup
We had these same buses in my school district, "up the hill" in Apple Valley, CA. I always thought they looked so cool!
This Bus is in excellent shape.

The 1988 Crown School Bus is in great Condition it looks good
That's ridiculously cool! I've never actually seen a tandem axle school bus in real life either.
The rims really set this coach off. Great job.

A few upgrades since this was done . New Paint, updated 10 speed shift control / converted from an RT to RTO and a couple more add ons coming
Nice video! What a beautiful bus! That’s the original 1988 steering wheel btw. Thanks for sharing!
Rode one to middle school in San Marcos ca back in the day
I love Tandem Crowns

The year is 1988 but the design language says 1958
No doubt about that!
1948*

You need to open the back "engine compartment" on one of these.
hence the quotes
Some of them did have rear mounted engines, but I'm not sure if any were tandem axle

Are these still for sale on the market?

HUNGARIAN HUNGARIA HUNGARY IKARUS 55/66 FAROS BUS!!!
The seats on that bus are more Conformable than the seats on the planes today. I rather travel on that bus than to fly.
100% agree!
Somehow I do not trust these bus seats for being comfortable. They don't look comfortable
@@paname514 They are not the most comfortable considering they are 30 years old, but compared to a plane they are definitely more comfortable.
@@saftlinerc2 Sure! But actually it's more about the shape itself, the bench seats are not ergonomic at all, but it's nice thick foam

Tandem axles 🤤🤤🤤
You got a lot of crowns
I wish! This was taken at a Crown meetup event, I don't own one unfortunately.
