    I just brought home my first baby “cober” and i am in love with him. He is so tiny and has so much spice! I just brought him home yesterday and I was terrified he wouldn’t eat because he was so tiny, but he took the first pinkie right alway. I got him at an expo and i was worried that the seller wasn’t being truthful about his voracious appetite and eating FT. Poor little dude was a little dehydrated from travel and sitting in a dry display box all day. He dank water from a bottle cap in the car on the ride home. I almost died from cuteness.

    Western hognose are some of the best pet snakes in my opinion, mainly due to relatively small size and easy temperament. I have found that he Terra Sahara substrate from The Bio Dude is a great substrate for them. But of course, they thrive in aspen too.
    Update: Also Dig-It from Josh's Frogs, another good soil substrate. I add a little playsand in both.
    In the wild, the soil they live in - their burrows - are often slightly damp, or at least higher humidity than the surface for sure. They will search for food in full daylight too much like gartersnakes.

    I got a male hognose snake quite recently and he's a sweetheart. Only minus I've experienced so far is that since it's not a very big snake especially if it's male like mine, they can get into tight spaces where they're very hard to reach if you let them explore on their own, so definitely keep that in mind if you do so.

    I have seen charts that imply rats aren’t inherently more fatty, it’s just that between a rat and a mouse that are the same size, the rat will be much younger and younger rats have higher percentages of fat than adults. I believe an adult rat and an adult mouse will have around the same % of fat, as will a pinky mouse and pinky rat. But if you have to choose between, say, an adult mouse and whatever rat is the same size, you should stick to the adult mouse. In addition, an adult mouse should have bones that are more developed than an equivalent sized rat and therefore should theoretically have a little bit more calcium.

    I mostly watch these videos just for the cute hognose footage nowadays. I've no chance of getting a snake anytime soon. I want my first to be either a hognose or a Mexican black kingsnake. I know some people in the community would not call them ideal beginner snakes, whereas others do disagree and they show up on some lists, but not others. They're adorable snakes though. I love how chonky the females get. Even if they get grompy, they're something about their dumb little shovel-faces that makes it impossible to be scared of them.
    I also love your little shoulder gecko. I honestly used to find leopard gecko's kinda boring and don't see the appeal of them, but they've definitely grown on me. They can be relatively active and handleable, come in really cool colours and morphs and the entire species share about 5 brain cells. I think I just really like dumb reptiles; it's the most endearing thing to me for some reason.

    I purchased my small male anaconda morph Western hognose snake for $250 as a baby 7+ years ago (pet only not breeder). He has lived all of his life in a ten gallon tank. Although now I am going to upgrade to a twenty gallon. He has never had any issues and been kept on aspen bedding, because he adores making tunnels. I did have feeding problems with him. He only ate live baby mice until finally deciding to eat f/t this year. He also goes off food for a while in the Winter (doesn't lose weight and has been doing it all his life, so I am not concerned). I have kept a lot of different snakes (for 50+ years) and my Aspen is my favorite. So much personally in such a small package! Aspen is very tame and doesn't even hiss at me anymore, although as a baby he was a hissy little noodle. I cannot say enough good things about this species of snake. Not sure Western hognose snakes are my favorite species, but Aspen is hands down my favorite individual snake. Oh and he has never bitten me or even struck at me, such a sweetheart.

      But to my absolute delight I found a breeder in Stockholm who seems to breed lavenders, snows, condas/supercondas, arctics and more.

    I think my tiny guy is the rare climber. He's in a baby bin but uses every inch he has, including exploring up to his lid and of course all his tiny burrows. Can't wait til he takes a few more meals so we can upgrade to a bigger enclosure with more room to explore!

    I find it funny that you can buy a Hognose at a pet store since I live in the Ozarks of Missouri where Hognose snakes can be found in their natural habitat same goes with a few other species of snakes that are found in the wild in my part of Missouri but would see the same snakes being sold in petstores in Kansas and Texas, I've also seen Grey tree frogs being sold at pet Co and petsmart with a $10-$15 price tag when I find Grey tree frogs all the time for free in the wild lol

    The picky eating is the reason I got a Kenyan sandboa over a hognose, and my sandboa turned out to be a really picky eater. So I'm going to try and find a decent price hognose normal morph at the crbe next month.

    • @6strings735
      @6strings735 5 лет назад +3

      In my experience, hognose are far less picky than sandboas can be, but hognose are very "seasonal" in their feeding, meaning they will refuse food at times. Mine do that at the same times every year. They seem to always be ravenous or else refusing, and they never lose weight or suffer from it. Do not buy into the "feed them each week" crap that is on too many care guides. When hognose are hungry, they feed often and eat a lot, much like garter snakes do. And when they do not want food, they don't want it. Once you get to understand their rhythm in captivity, it is no big deal if they take a break from feeding.

    I would suggest aspen or sani chips for hognose snakes. They hold the shape of their tunnels better than coco coir does. Also, less of a risk with aspen getting in their nose, eyes or mouth. I honestly wouldn't suggest coco coir for any snake, even with my ball pythons I keep them on coco husk.
