When Putin was asked to name his heroes, who he admired,he gave 3 names: all people who expanded the Russian Empire. One of those was Stalin.
Putin was also asked what was the worst disaster of the 20th century. Putin said it was the fall of the Soviet Union- not WW1 or WW2.

This comment is perfectly right... and absolutely wrong. As always, we make the mistake of not understanding that, for Russians, human beings, wellness, economy, everything is disposable when it comes to "the greater good", which is usually a benefit for the empire/state/boss. Stalin achieved a lot by exploiting his own people. From a Russian perspective, he achieved a lot, period. The fact that he lost millions of people is not relevant.

The fact the Ukrainians were fighting with one hand behind their back for so long let the russians get so complacent is the only reason this kind of operation has been so successful so far. After this, all troops might need to return home to defend their border if they do not want this to happen again.

It would be interesting to know if the type of soldier being taken prisoner by Ukraine in Kursk Oblast will have an effect. They tend to be conscripts, as conscripts cannot be sent abroad. And they are younger, 18-30 mainly. So they are more likely to be ethnic Russians.
