Modifications for my Michigan Sloyd spoon mule

  • This video focuses on modifying my Michigan Sloyd spoon mule to be able to assist me in making shrink pots. I’ve made an adjustable (and removable) set of wooden vise jaws that will hold my workpiece while I hollow it with an auger in its beginning stages.
I also made a removable mount for a 3.5” vise to aid me in hook knife sharpening. And as if all that isn’t enough, I decided to finally make a draw knife test for the front of the mule head. This will allow me to safely keep my drawknife at arms length while making adjustments to my spoon’s orientation.
    Enjoy the video!

Just finished a spoon mule accessory for my shave horse. One thing I did on it was to add a slanted hole in the side of the upright portion to fit a pencil. Out of the way and yet convenient if needed. Like the draw knife holder!

Awesome! I purchased the spoon mule plans from Dawson & made the mule and it has served me well! The plans were great - easy to follow. I will certainly be making these mods. The hanger for the draw knife will be the first mod I make as I, too, am always looking for a place to put it to keep it safe. Thanks for sharing!

I just finished a very similar spoon mule as I had no plans to work from so tried to build it to my body size with size ergonomics to match my knee and elbow heights for both comfort and efficiency. I, like the others think that draw knife shelf is a good idea. Time will tell if you should have put it somewhere else on the horse like the side of the head's riser as you will soon know by how many times you walk past the horse and accidentally knock the draw knife out of its intended home. I get the impression you are a fairly tall man like myself, I'm 6'2'' tall and a few decades older than yourself. If I may in order to save you some discomfort suggest that with items like your vice mod that you make the riser higher so you are not working in a hunched over bent over position. Your back when you get to be my age will really thank you for it and you will find you can work harder and for much longer time periods with out the fatigue caused by bad working postures. Cheers. Good Video. Good mods.

I’m 5’ 10” tall and can see what you mean about hunching. The wooden vise jaws are intended to be stood at however, not sat. I use a large T- handle auger while standing above it. As for the drawknife rest, it is only used while I’m sitting at the mule. The sheath is always on otherwise.

I just finished mine yesterday! The idea of the drawknife rest is simple and brilliant, I think I'll do it too. I was thinking in to do a shavehorse head for the same base as well, I saw a video in MichiganSloyd channel where he was showing one. Great video by the way...

Ouida Brady thank you! I have a couple more ideas for attachments but want to make sure I think them through first.

great ideal..i think i would raise the medal vise higher, so that im not hunched over so far to sharpen the knives.....

While it’s not perfect, I find it comfortable as far as body posture. It only takes me a couple minutes to sharpen a Sloyd. The vice mod was something I made for when I had very little space to work with and was done with materials I just had lying around.

My spoon mule was made by Dawson Moore at Michigan Sloyd and my shave horse head was made by Adam Kowalsky. I rebuilt the bed to be longer so I could use both mechanisms on it
