They say necessity is the mother of invention, and it's so true! I really wanted to paint and make some SheleeArt blooms, but I was out of my Glidden Essentials house paint and Home Depot was out of stock too. So I tried Glidden Premium Semi-Gloss paint instead. When I opened the can and transferred 4 cups into my measuring cup, I noticed it was much thinner than my Glidden Essentials (and yep, I gave it a really good stir first!). So, what to do when you want to paint NOW instead of decanting and waiting several hours or a day for the paint to thicken up? This hack may help you! Please note I did not change the consistency of my pouring medium, or the consistency of my cell activator. The only difference is the thinner base (house) paint that goes on the canvas first. I was really impressed with the dried result--so incredibly shiny!--that I will definitely let the Glidden Premium thicken up and try in again as usual without the hack. I hope you find this useful!
Apologies for the weird background noise--those are the BroodX cicadas!!
I post 2 videos regularly each week--one on Tuesday and one on Saturday. Both will air around 3:00 PM US east coast time. Occasionally you'll get a bonus video for premieres and collaborations--but Tuesdays and Saturdays are firm. xoxo --Karen
Colors/Brands/SheleeArt Bloom Recipe:
House Paint-base aka puddle for the canvas:
Glidden Premium Semi Gloss White House paint (Home Depot) 4 cup batch mixed with 1/4 cup Golden GAC800 to prevent crazing.
Pouring Medium aka PM-mix with all colors EXCEPT the cell activator:
Behr Interior/Exterior High Gloss Enamel DEEP Base #8300 (Home Depot)); Minwax Polyacrylic Gloss varnish ; 2:0.75 ratio paint to varnish. Mix well.
Brands/Colors mixed: Golden Fluid Acrylics: Quinacridone Nickel Azo Gold, Benzemedazolone Yellow, Permanent Violet Dark; Utrecht Fluid Acrylics in Red Violet, Primary Elements Pigments in Ginger Peach
Second Bloom: PearlEx Pigments in Apple Green; This Little Piggy Pigment in Lemon Sorbet, Emerald, Nebula, and Golden Fluid Acrylics in Permanent Violet Dark.
Several drops of Golden Fluid Acrylics into a 3 oz cup of PM (filled about 3/4s to the top); stir well.
All pigments are 1/8th tsp. pre-disbursed with a small amount of JoSonja Varnish to wet it, then added into 3 oz. cup of Pouring Medium; stir well.
Cell Activator (last color on your puddle before you swipe or blow it out-no PM):
Australian Floetrol + Amsterdam Turquoise Green. 4:1 ratio Austrialian Floetrol to paint

Very pretty! Congratulations to your baby! They grow up so quickly 😢
Thanks so much. Beautiful 🤩
Glad to see you miss. Karen missed seeing your videos!!!
Nice video!! The base paint differences from essentials to premium is remarkable!! I love the colors in the first piece but they are all fab!! I usually turn my fresh bought paint upside down for a few hours to let the stuff at the bottom rise to the top. But I like your hack too! It’s a must try!!
I do that too! Should’ve mentioned it!
I often store my paints upside down.
I did that once with one of those Home Depot paint lids though. Not recommended!! Lol 😂 leaked everywhere

First let me say, I love your lighter hair color! Boy your hair is so thick, I’m jealous. Ok, enough compliments. 🤣❤️
Great hack, colors are beautiful as always. Wow, the shine is awesome. I see a change coming! Have a great vacation with the fam! 👍👏❤️
I liked both of the first 2. I don't know if you didn't over because I didn't want to see another beauty destroyed. I'm just learning to do this kind of art, and the second one you did on this video would have been perfect for one that I want to make for a friend.
Omg Karen!!!! Love your new color of hair. You absolutely look fabulous. 😍
Thank you….I haven’t changed anything though!
@@WaterfallAcrylics really?? Your hair looks lighter. 😍
And you're glowing
Absolutely gorgeous..glad you scraped and scraped 😆the last one as it turned out great! I have a commission piece that I have scraped twice now and waiting till my mood improves before trying again...grrr...love to watch you...have a relaxing vacation !
How exactly does one scrape a canvas to get paint off but not damage the surface of the canvas? Thanks Cheri
New to your channel. Loved Your pictures today.
Love it
Love you hair color, beautiful 🤩
I'm in Idaho. You're mistakes are way better even the best I've done. So it's kind of hard to hear you complain about them Lol Great work I'm new to your channel I'll check you out some more.
Love ❤ so pretty
It's very nice
Gorgeous results! I wonder if the high gloss look was from the new paint not being mixed up completely? Let us know if the glossy look continues as you get through the can! Thank you, as always, for your generous heart!
Your hair looks amazing in this video. I just had to say something. 💯
New haircut? Your hair looks awesome today. Good luck at the show! Beautiful paintings.
Thanks Karen!!😁
I love the turquoise but not enough contrast for me. But having said that, I absolutely love your blooms.
Omg I just realized the first one is hanging in my kitchen 😂😂
This is gorgeous Karen, these are my absolute favorite color combos. May I ask you how it is you can layer purple and yellow without getting a muddy blend? Just stunning 💜💛🧡.
Amazing , interesting and joyful....🤩🤩
New friend here.....🤝🤝🤝🤝🤝

Sorry for so many questions just trying to learn. When you say the cool setting on the blow dryer do you mean the "no heat setting" or do you hold down the "cool shot" button the whole time? As far as the order of the paint,is it always best to alternate light and dark? Why do cells appear just from blowing air, I really never understood this? I was surprised that you scraped the wood twice and left in on the board.Weren't you concerned there might be too much paint in the center? What is it that causes you to dislike your work? Was it the way it was blown out or the paint order and when learning how to blow it out is it best to not blow hard so you see the pillow or what is the objective you have in mind? I feel like I want to know what goes through your mind as you say, Thats a big fat No",or "I like it" or other real time reactions because it would really help us newbies understand what makes for a "great piece" vs. "a not so good piece that you scrape". BTW your only one of a few who I have seen scape on camera and admit its not turning out well, which I really appreciate since it's nice to see that even awesome talented people can still make mistakes and be willing to admit it. Debbie
So reassuring you have to play to get the colour combo right 😁
You're looking foxy😜
Hello! From México 🇲🇽❤️🥰
Could you please say what the opacity is of the different pants as you're mixing them? No one ever says when they're mixing their paints. But I know that that's an important consideration.
Yes I like it
I 💘 it all
You are so amazing Karen. I’m learning so much. So quick question…when you say that you leave your glidden premium paint out overnight decanted…do u mean uncovered? I’m assuming that’s what you mean but u know what happens when you assume…😳😉
Yes!
Wow is all I can say.
Absolutely stunning! Thank you for your work and your instructions! I have a question: When you say "my cell activator paint", do you mean "just" paint? (In your instructions below the video it said that it's the last color before the blow out, but without pouring medium. That confused me. In other videos I saw people refer to the "cell activator" as it being the pouring medium itself. Can you help a beginner out? What do you mean with "cell activator" exactly? Thanks so much for clearing up my mental mess! M.
For the bloom technique cell activator refers to the one color mixed with Australian Floetrol and all the other colors are mixed with the pouring medium recipe.
Holy Cow! That's beautiful! What a great tip. Are those cicadas I hear in the background? Are they still around?? So glad we don't have those in NH.
Love those colors together. I’m learning so much about composition from you. That second one has gorgeous colors. Love that purple! That cell activator seems to be taking over on the third version. Not many focal points on it.
Hi Karen, those are absolutely gorgeous 💕
Could they be extra shiny because you didn't mix the pillow paint before using it?
Nah
Great tutorial! And results! Are you able to tell me what spinning stand you use? (I have had bad luck with them not spinning well!!!)
A cake spinner from Amazon. It’s in my Amazon shop under paint supplies. Link is in the description section.
@@WaterfallAcrylics awesome ty I looked but apparently not hard enough!
Awesome Karen! I also use the Glidden essentials, but I was shocked by the red can you used and the gloss it left. Did you mix that with GAC 800? Anyhow, all of them was excellent! Thanks dear for sharing your knowledge! 😉
Yep always toss in a little GAC!
