It surprised me when you said you use Bristol paper. I always thought I should use textured paper so it could grip the paper. But this makes a lot more sense.
i use tiny circles to shade and blend instead of lines because lines force you to shade in "blocks" because you can only move your hand so far side to side, and when you need to shade a really big surface you'll still get lines in between each "block" of shading. Tiny circles or "scrumbling" don't do that. You can go on and on growing out from one point into any shape that you need. it does take a bit longer but the results are amazing! especially for portraits because skin isn't exactly perfectly one smooth shade (you'll end up with unrealistic porcelain doll-like faces otherwise) using scrumbling gives it texture while maintaining a smooth even shading. hope this helps :)
I think a combination of both works best, depending on the drawing. Like you would use the back and forth motion for wrinkles and creases, but circulated motions for smoother areas of the skin or fill in larger shapes.👍
red macbeth Unfortunately you’re probably right. Sounds typical of society. Gladly there is still a large percentage of civil people who make up for other people’s lack of appreciation for free expert advice on how to create something beautiful. Weapons of mass creation... That has a ring to it.
You can see the difference. I guess it depends on what you're trying to accomplish. My best advice is to use the 40-50% coupon for Michael's on a small set.

Good video. As someone who has used colored pencils a lot, and has often been frustrated with the results of my experimentation, I appreciate you making these. Just one minor point, though: A set of lines at right angles to a previous set is not in the "opposite" direction, it's *** perpendicular *** to the first set. Just FYI. ;)

I am only 12 and I just bought some new color pencils with my savings and I am here to learn to blend cuz my school just told me to go one direction and many artists do the opposites and it works .
I know a lot of portrait artists prefer to burnish. Doesn’t it kill your wrist? I just can’t do it that long before my wrist is worn out and I have to stop.
Peggy Henderson I don’t get any wrist pain when I burnish. I think this is because my Luminance pencils are so soft and creamy that you don’t need to apply much pressure at all to blend them out. My wrist ache more when I use other brands of coloured pencils that don’t blend as easily.
I really want to be very good at color pencil i dont know if i should be getting better with sketching. Should i need to master proper sketching first or I could go directly mastering color pencil? is everything follows? like improvement in sketching while trying to learn realistic art with color pencil?

Hi Kirsty, i'd like to ask you. I love using coloured pencil. I'm also really good at it. My problem is that my drawing usually fades about 3 weeks later. Do u know how to prevent that happen? I am upset seeing my good artwork starts fading :((
Kirsty the correct statement would be blend at 90 degrees to the lines, the opposite direction would be the same way but starting at the other end of the lines. cheers love you skills and lovely clear teaching skills
practice. use your free time to practice. it sounds so odd but most of the artist my age (Im 23) that i know regret it so much not to practice more while being young(er) and having time. do studies and SKETCH. it doesnt have to be finished and polished pics all the time. try different poses, play with colors. dont be afraid making mistakes.
Cass Gray cross hatching leaves evidence of both sets of marks going perpendicular directions usually very close together so the eye blends them at a distance. This method is designed to hide those lines completely
Wow thanks for this tutorial. That was really very helpful! I mainly draw anime art and don’t really have much trouble colouring just a solid colour with straight burnishing. Now I realise I need to colour gently if I want to blend a few colours together before burnishing at the end. And the opposite direction burnishing is a really useful tip too.

I think if you attempt to learn colored pencil now, you may struggle with adding shadows, but either way you will improve artistically.

Now I realise I need to colour gently if I want to blend a few colours together before burnishing at the end. And the opposite direction burnishing is a really useful tip too.

I have an Art project and we have to mix pencil and colored pencil and I'm drawing Jimin (BTS) and I planned on making his eyes in colour so this was very helpful

Thanks for sharing Kirsty! Ha ha ha, my "Portrait" drawings always look like the subject has had a stroke 🙂 I guess practice makes perfect IF I can suss out my mistakes. Just using colouring in books to practice my blending at the moment...
