I think giving one of the Pegasus knights a shot could be interesting. Definitely have traversal advantage on most maps, but I can see them struggling to survive quite a bit. I've never had an even halfway decent Vanessa.
My issue with Ross is that he always ends up too strong and dies because he keeps killing people who attack him, thus freeing up the empty space beside him.
The curse of the glass cannon, I had Lucius go down in FE8 a few times for the same reason, he doubles everyone and hits decently hard, but shit defense and low HP.
I love the mental image of the Tirado fight. Ross vs Tirado with the mages throwing spells, Ross kills Tirado and staggers into the throne and all of the mages just give up because reasons.
Im really surprised by how many times Ross was 1dmg away from killing in 1 round after he capped his level at 29str. I guess the 30str really is crucial, huh
Other people have already brought up the comparison to pokemon runs and I agree wholeheartedly. Would love to this concept expanded on. I must have watched every Jrose solo run imaginable so seeing it in FE is great.

Glad you enjoyed! Ross is really good. Death counter is a hard add because it's harder for me to go back and track because the Demon King is most of the time luck base and it's hard to ascribe the correct "value" of what a death is worth. I've thought of maybe adding a reset counter tho.
The reason you got double crit on the gorgon map is because when you’re hit by Stone, the enemies are set to 100 hit and 30 crit on you. So getting crit twice is relatively likely

I did some research on your Ross' strength stat because I felt something was off and I'm an FE nerd I guess so here goes: Ross gained 1 strength upon promotion, which took him to 21 strength. The two energy rings you gave him took him up to 25 strength. That means, he got 4 strength from level ups as a berserker. We start counting at berserker level 1, so Ross gained 19 levels, 4 of which were strength level ups. According to my calculations, and I'm pretty sure I'm right, the chances of getting 4 strength or less on 19 levels are absolutely absurdly low: it's 0,96%. Less than a 1 out of 100 chance this actually happens. Let's just say your Ross was kinda cursed lmao.

FUN FACT THAT NO ONE ASKED FOR: Tirado was the map that I grinded to lvl 20 pirate on. Alot of time that payed off till I got Ross killed and was to far into the game to want to restart the map and save him......😢 Edit: this wasn't a solo run just one of my early playthroughs of the game.
I am absolutely LOVING these playthroughs. Would love to see the other trainees get some spotlight, Ewan is a MUST at this point. Seeing Ephraim run through the game would be pretty cool too. I imagine he would have little difficulty clearing the majority of the game either.

Give them the monster weapon skill and give them the zombie claws or one of the eye magic attacks. 2. Start them as pre promotes with the same statline (does not help with dancer). 3. Give them rapier proficiency like Erika, it will let them use rapier even though they have no rank.

Im glad to see this run. I was very optimistic about it since Ross is usually my MVP in this game. Tho I almost every time go for Hero + brave axe and obliterate everything.
Berserker and Hero are definitely Ross' best options. Hero has slightly better promotion bonuses (It really helps his Speed, which both he and Garcia need a ton of) but Berserker adds some much-needed Con, as well as the crit bonus and extra mmobility.
I really need more of these runs, I have already played this thrice on the Background. I find interesting the really bad early Level Ups, the bad RNG always happens to me either on Binding Blade or Radiant Dawn. Keep up the great work! Loving It!

Awesome video! Poor Eirika and Ephraim are going to be at a disadvantage in these since their promo items come so late! My bet is that Ewan, Artur, and Lute will be the toughest (excluding the healers) just because of how fragile they are, especially early game.
that SPECIFC soldier with the weird ass A.I. in chapter 1 has a specific flag in his code that makes him unable to move and attack at the same time. So he can spend a turn moving, or if you end turn next to him (like you did on turn two) he can spend a turn attacking someone, but never both in one turn.
The chapter 1 soldier has his ai set to "only attack when adjacent" which means he will only attack someone he starts his turn adjacent to, so if you never end your turn adjacent to him, he will never attack.
I remember the first time I unlocked the Super Trainees and did that to Ross. Absolute DEMON. Sure, the Con hit was a little unpleasant, but come ON, guys
You could have just replaced the second Ross in chapter 2 with the Eirika he swapped with. You could do that in every future run, having Eirika in place of the unit you're using. Kinda inconsequential, but it'd be neat and at least all the items available would be completely balanced out.
You asked about the AI early on in the video, so here's what I've been able to suss out. The AI seems to follow a checklist for determining who to attack: 1. If an enemy is in range, a unit programmed to move and attack always will. 2. The unit first prioritizes its own survival. If it has a higher chance of surviving against one unit than another, it seems to take that chance. This includes attacking melee units at range, or attacking archers in melee. 3. The unit then prioritizes damage. If it would take the same amount of damage from two units, it then chooses the one it has the highest probability to do the most damage to. I have no idea why the soldier doesn't attack though. Probably a glitch.

Ross berserker is my favorite unit by far. I used to effectively do this challenge even when playing the game normally cause Ross would be soloing every chapter as a level 20 berserker while my other units were very underleveled
The AI is pretty simple IIRC, basically there are 2 big checks, First check is can you counter attack, if you cant they will prio that unit, then it goes to most dmg possible with a non zero hit rating.
something else berserker ross has over hero ross is 13 constitution vs 11 (fighter ross should get +3 while pirate gets +2). Pirate also gives +1 speed and defense while fighter gives +1 skill and res (both give +2 HP and strength). Ross struggles with doubling early on, so that +1 speed can really help him, though the 1 less constitution as a pirate vs a fighter does mean he takes a bit more attack speed penalty from heavier axes, but iron axes weigh 10 and they'll be what is most often used. Hand axes also weigh 12, so berserker ross can use them with no speed penalty, but hero ross would lose a point of speed (until you use the body ring found in the desert, assuming you get it). After using the body ring with berserker ross though, he can use all axes with no speed penalty except brave axe (-1) and devil axe (-3) Style points also go to berserker ross, and the +2 defense and +40 avoid from peak terrain doesn't come up in every map, but it does come up in a fair number of them, including later maps that are the harder ones amusingly your first ross ended up being strangely res blessed-his average stats say he usually won't have 4 res until a level 12 pirate of note for future axe user runs-there's a warrior that spawns with pablo in chapter 13 that carries a swordslayer that can just wreck carlyle. That warrior also carries a hand axe, and will drop whichever he isn't wielding when he's beaten. Of course, getting that swordslayer means having to deal with pablo's entourage which can be pretty hard to deal with for a single unit since it's a mix of magic and physical enemies with most weapon types covered and pablo has purge and deals heavy damage for the desert chapter-I'd honestly say probably the best way to handle the duessel and ephraim situation is having duessel grab ephraim and sit on a fort to make sure he doesn't die and expose ephraim to being killed, just making sure to send the solo unit south first to wipe out the enemies around duessel, hopefully before they break their weapons on him. That seems the most consistent to me, though I suppose having duessel wait on the village tile can work too, just having the solo character go south still to wipe out the enemies and make sure duessel doesn't die from repeated hits. Edit-it occurs tome you can have ephraim hold onto vulneraries/elixirs in chapter 8 before finishing the map and have duessel grab them in chapter 15 and then use those to heal, that might work too if you don't want him sitting on a fort ch 18-you probably should take out the stone gorgons first to try and minimize chance of getting hit by stone, and the gorgons that only have demon surge can be counter killed with handaxe/javelins, while stone has 1-3 range and they'll almost certainly attack from outside your unit's counter range unless they have a longbow equipped or other enemies are blocking all the tiles to attack from 3 range ch 21 vs leon is probably safer to to remove most of the gorgons around leon before trying to kill him unless you can one round him consistently, otherwise it'll be a lot of resetting because of getting ganged up on by all the gorgons for future runs-what are you going to do for units that use rare weapon types like dark magic or light magic where you can't get more tomes for them to use until quite a few levels have passed? They're almost certainly going to run out of weapon uses by like chapter 3 or 4. Will you end up doing runs with the bonus units like ismaire, orson, and lyon?
Thanks for the very detailed comment I appreciate it! I may try future runs with non-playable and enemy characters in the future, but we'll cross that bridge when we get there. As for tome users that use rare tomes I'll have to be creative and think on my feet for sure.

AI in FE8 for most units is to attack the unit where they will do the most damage assuming they will hit. (This is part of why phantoms are so good). Some units are programmed to go for specific units. Also, Leon is the reason to go for warrior. Longbow lets you chip away at his HP safely.
It's been a while since I played the GBA games, but I'm PRETTY sure that the way the AI works for targeting isn't the amount of damage they deal, but how low the player units HP will be if they hit, presuming they can deal some damage. Assuming Seth was unequipped in the prologue, then there might be a factor where being able to reduce HP to below a certain threshold will overwrite their usual propensity of avoiding counter-attacks.
Man, if Ross struggled that badly with Chapter 18, Cormag gives me pause just thinking about that chapter. At least Ross had a great luck growth rate to help with dodging. Cormag, on the other hand...

I totally get is it was a choice for the limited inventory, I was just curious! Great ending to a fun challenge!

LOL tbh, it never really came to my mind at first because I didn't have to do more than 3 attempts on any given maps, because if it would have come down to an insane amount of luck I probably would have looked at items of that kind to make my life a little easier.

I'm a judging them on in game time because sometimes I have to do these in multiple sittings so it's hard to track IRL time correctly. I'm glad you're enjoying the series.
AI have different priorities, some will prioritize accuracy and some prioritize Damage, However there is a "standard" AI that tries to find the best of both worlds and will engage in battle even if it's a losing battle. NPC green units actually also have different AI as well.
5:00 that soldier can attack or move, but never both. There are some enemies in sacred stones who have this AI. I believe there is a revenant reinforcement in the top left of the artur map, the one with a sharp claw, who does this as well.
5:10 > Soldier AI Hes set to "Chance to Attack 100" and "Wait 1 Turn then move to enemy" I guess the lethal attack AI overrides that wait 1 turn to move.

Yeah, when I use Ross or Garcia I always go for berserker Ross and Hero Garcia, even if I don’t use them too often.

Poor Eirika and Ephraim are going to be at a disadvantage in these since their promo items come so late!
My bet is that Ewan, Artur, and Lute will be the toughest (excluding the healers) just because of how fragile they are, especially early game.

that SPECIFC soldier with the weird ass A.I. in chapter 1 has a specific flag in his code that makes him unable to move and attack at the same time. So he can spend a turn moving, or if you end turn next to him (like you did on turn two) he can spend a turn attacking someone, but never both in one turn.
The chapter 1 soldier has his ai set to "only attack when adjacent" which means he will only attack someone he starts his turn adjacent to, so if you never end your turn adjacent to him, he will never attack.
I remember the first time I unlocked the Super Trainees and did that to Ross. Absolute DEMON. Sure, the Con hit was a little unpleasant, but come ON, guys
I'd have to try Super Trainees at some point!

You could have just replaced the second Ross in chapter 2 with the Eirika he swapped with. You could do that in every future run, having Eirika in place of the unit you're using. Kinda inconsequential, but it'd be neat and at least all the items available would be completely balanced out.

You asked about the AI early on in the video, so here's what I've been able to suss out. The AI seems to follow a checklist for determining who to attack:
1. If an enemy is in range, a unit programmed to move and attack always will.
2. The unit first prioritizes its own survival. If it has a higher chance of surviving against one unit than another, it seems to take that chance. This includes attacking melee units at range, or attacking archers in melee.
3. The unit then prioritizes damage. If it would take the same amount of damage from two units, it then chooses the one it has the highest probability to do the most damage to.
I have no idea why the soldier doesn't attack though. Probably a glitch.

Ross berserker is my favorite unit by far. I used to effectively do this challenge even when playing the game normally cause Ross would be soloing every chapter as a level 20 berserker while my other units were very underleveled

The AI is pretty simple IIRC, basically there are 2 big checks, First check is can you counter attack, if you cant they will prio that unit, then it goes to most dmg possible with a non zero hit rating.
This Lv20 Pirate Ross is better than my Gonzales save state arena level manipulation. So IT IS AN AWESOME UNIT!

something else berserker ross has over hero ross is 13 constitution vs 11 (fighter ross should get +3 while pirate gets +2). Pirate also gives +1 speed and defense while fighter gives +1 skill and res (both give +2 HP and strength). Ross struggles with doubling early on, so that +1 speed can really help him, though the 1 less constitution as a pirate vs a fighter does mean he takes a bit more attack speed penalty from heavier axes, but iron axes weigh 10 and they'll be what is most often used. Hand axes also weigh 12, so berserker ross can use them with no speed penalty, but hero ross would lose a point of speed (until you use the body ring found in the desert, assuming you get it). After using the body ring with berserker ross though, he can use all axes with no speed penalty except brave axe (-1) and devil axe (-3)
Style points also go to berserker ross, and the +2 defense and +40 avoid from peak terrain doesn't come up in every map, but it does come up in a fair number of them, including later maps that are the harder ones
amusingly your first ross ended up being strangely res blessed-his average stats say he usually won't have 4 res until a level 12 pirate
of note for future axe user runs-there's a warrior that spawns with pablo in chapter 13 that carries a swordslayer that can just wreck carlyle. That warrior also carries a hand axe, and will drop whichever he isn't wielding when he's beaten. Of course, getting that swordslayer means having to deal with pablo's entourage which can be pretty hard to deal with for a single unit since it's a mix of magic and physical enemies with most weapon types covered and pablo has purge and deals heavy damage
for the desert chapter-I'd honestly say probably the best way to handle the duessel and ephraim situation is having duessel grab ephraim and sit on a fort to make sure he doesn't die and expose ephraim to being killed, just making sure to send the solo unit south first to wipe out the enemies around duessel, hopefully before they break their weapons on him. That seems the most consistent to me, though I suppose having duessel wait on the village tile can work too, just having the solo character go south still to wipe out the enemies and make sure duessel doesn't die from repeated hits. Edit-it occurs tome you can have ephraim hold onto vulneraries/elixirs in chapter 8 before finishing the map and have duessel grab them in chapter 15 and then use those to heal, that might work too if you don't want him sitting on a fort
ch 18-you probably should take out the stone gorgons first to try and minimize chance of getting hit by stone, and the gorgons that only have demon surge can be counter killed with handaxe/javelins, while stone has 1-3 range and they'll almost certainly attack from outside your unit's counter range unless they have a longbow equipped or other enemies are blocking all the tiles to attack from 3 range
ch 21 vs leon is probably safer to to remove most of the gorgons around leon before trying to kill him unless you can one round him consistently, otherwise it'll be a lot of resetting because of getting ganged up on by all the gorgons
for future runs-what are you going to do for units that use rare weapon types like dark magic or light magic where you can't get more tomes for them to use until quite a few levels have passed? They're almost certainly going to run out of weapon uses by like chapter 3 or 4. Will you end up doing runs with the bonus units like ismaire, orson, and lyon?
Thanks for the very detailed comment I appreciate it! I may try future runs with non-playable and enemy characters in the future, but we'll cross that bridge when we get there. As for tome users that use rare tomes I'll have to be creative and think on my feet for sure.

I used to use Ross as a wall of flesh in one-tile doors, and he would die because every enemy in the map would make it their life’s goal to kill him

AI in FE8 for most units is to attack the unit where they will do the most damage assuming they will hit. (This is part of why phantoms are so good). Some units are programmed to go for specific units.
Also, Leon is the reason to go for warrior. Longbow lets you chip away at his HP safely.
Yeah, I learned a lot about the AI, by making this video. Fair Lyon point, but without Berserker you don't get the SWEET crit finish ;)
Thrives can also cross rivers, I use that to get the energy ring from the mage on chapter 7 and get Neimi across the river.
That's true because they have 6 movement allowing them to be over that river threshold.

It's been a while since I played the GBA games, but I'm PRETTY sure that the way the AI works for targeting isn't the amount of damage they deal, but how low the player units HP will be if they hit, presuming they can deal some damage. Assuming Seth was unequipped in the prologue, then there might be a factor where being able to reduce HP to below a certain threshold will overwrite their usual propensity of avoiding counter-attacks.
So it'd be HP percentage then interesting 🤔

I honnestly believe you should do these challenges with the average growth hack, will remove the luck involved in stat softlocks while saving you time
A lot of people have proposed this, but I like the luck aspect of it, to me it's much more interesting that way.
Man, if Ross struggled that badly with Chapter 18, Cormag gives me pause just thinking about that chapter. At least Ross had a great luck growth rate to help with dodging. Cormag, on the other hand...

LOL tbh, it never really came to my mind at first because I didn't have to do more than 3 attempts on any given maps, because if it would have come down to an insane amount of luck I probably would have looked at items of that kind to make my life a little easier.

AI have different priorities, some will prioritize accuracy and some prioritize Damage, However there is a "standard" AI that tries to find the best of both worlds and will engage in battle even if it's a losing battle. NPC green units actually also have different AI as well.

5:00 that soldier can attack or move, but never both. There are some enemies in sacred stones who have this AI. I believe there is a revenant reinforcement in the top left of the artur map, the one with a sharp claw, who does this as well.
