I watch the weight of the fish more than anything - wild fish go through feast or famine and if anything, it'll live much longer than a fish fed too much or a diet of mostly fatty frozen foods
I'm not saying this is one of them, but ideally your tank should have diversity to the point fish could hunt for morsels if really interested in having a snack. I dose every now and then Artemia eggs. I strongly believe that the corals don't manage filtering them all and some make it into live food. Also, peppermint shrimps in large numbers - invaluable source of live food for the other inhabitants.
I'm impressed with the green polyped toadstool growth, but not totally. If it was a Tyree Neon Green Long Polyp Toadstool I'd be super impressed because that is a very slow grower. It took mine about 10 years to get from a 1"diameter to a 7" diameter. I sold it about 2 years ago, but I cut a little frag for a tank I setup for my nephew and it's only about 2" diameter now. Man that thing grows slow. I need to get my nephew one of those Weeping Willow frags. A LFS that closed used to have tons of them for very cheap as well as what are now called Bloodshot Palys (they had them long before developing that name) for very cheap (about 8-10 polyp frags for $25. Unfortunately that LFS closed a few years ago.
i keep on revisiting these old nano videos, they're so good such a nostalgic vibe! jake, would you do maybe some video with some starfish content on how to keep, tips and tricks etc etc.. it's so hard to find some info on starfishes on reef keeping out there
Thanks for sharing. It at least helped me to see one way to do a nano tank been trying to figure out how much filtration I would need. This video helped. Appreciate all you do. 😎
I really enjoy your channel. I also appreciate the fact that you keep the jump cut edits to a minimum :-). I have a 17g and a 4g with a similar set up. Can you provide links to the items that you mentioned for dosing?
i wish you would do more on doseing and why. I'd like to see more on how you came to the conclusion that a tank needs XYZ. Because I would imagine if I let a tank like this "run" for 3 months...everything would be dead at the end. How did you reconginize that the tank need Kawwakwaser* dose?
Thanks for the tip on dosing acropower (amino acids). I am running a low nutrient QT tank and after dosing some amino acids the corals have started to thrive.
You should go with a kessil a80, to go with the low cost vibe. You could always get the kessil timer as well and mess with the intensity; given the time of day.
I have a 10 gallon tank with at least 20 different corals. A meat coral covering half of tank. No water changes nothing. Only 1 fish and yes the key is low nutrient. I feed him 3 times a week.
Jake you should throw a kessil A80 on that little boy, it's also timer compatible and I think is controller compatible to. I've been using it on my 5g for a year an a half with outstanding coloration and pop
Hey what did you use to make those holders for the hammers?? Just sold off my established 30 gallon, and am about to move across the country! I remembered this tank and want to set up the 10 gallon version of this when I move into my new place
What equipment are you using for the setup. Tank, Light, Filter? Also, what is the blank tube thing in the tank? I really like the size and how clean it looks.
I worked at a reef store and people would ask me how to fix algae or po4/nitrate and I’d have them get the food they use and show me how much they feed and it was always far too much. And I’m share some or most would feed more at home.
Question for Jake, I’ve kept several reef tanks previously but I’ve been out of the hobby for a few years. I’m kind of green in the area of starting a tank from scratch as I only did that with the first system and all tanks after that were upsizing and using live rock from previous tank. I am starting up a 60g cube this spring, I’m going to use Marco dry rock, I have 50lbs of it, and I’ll also be using Dry sand. I’ve got my brute trash can ready to mix saltwater and “cure” the dry rock, my question is a two part question, first is there any benefit to “curing” dry rock? Second is what steps would you take to have the dry rock ready for the tank? I’m about 10 weeks away from setting up the system and I want to utilize this time in the best way possible so that I can minimize the tank cycling process once I set the system up.
I was actually pretty interested to see how you were going to clean that tank up. I had hair algae last year and it was pretty annoying to get rid of, but I keep it pretty pristine now, Haven't seen any algae in months. Also...After you cleaned the tank, you have those white spots on your black filter. What are those? My tank has some as well and I'm not sure what it is. Thanks
I worked at a fish store for a year... and you wouldn't believe how many complaints we got because of that stupid light that can't be put on a timer. So stupid! lol... Great lookin' tank!
the main reason for the tight fitting lid is to practically eliminate evaporation so I don't have to top if off. The Euphyllias grow fast enough so not worried if they slow down from a little reduced pH.
@@ReefBuildersVideo could you tell me what a safe PH should be. Same corals only with clownfish. So if it ever gets near that PH value i could do a 10/20 % water change. My guess is i would have done a water change before it drops to that danger lvl of ph. Thanks !
You should see some of my DIY's. LOVE this style of vid. It was exactly what I needed to see. Working on fabricating a clear lid for my small bow front nano. Designed one already & my cousin is a mech engineer of some serious #!@... My first design I will sorta preview unless he sees$ bills. I really just need a solution...and my iwn 3D printer. Btw...you have a Mardarin dragonet's vision of heaven there with those pods...lol.ty for sharing. Stay safe!
Great content once again Jake. Huge fan of those acrylic(?) cylinders you use as coral mounts. Where can I get those? Would very much like to use them myself.
@@samcostin7586 I've tried both naming and not naming them. My heart still breaks each time. Guess I'm just a wuss that get too attached to his fish... I try my best to wait till their through quarantine before naming them, but if I don't intentionally name them, they end with a stupid nickname anyway.
Question: how do you think the minimal feeding affects the health and longevity of that fish?
I watch the weight of the fish more than anything - wild fish go through feast or famine and if anything, it'll live much longer than a fish fed too much or a diet of mostly fatty frozen foods
ATF intheHouse positively its much harder to starve a fish than you think and it’s easy to fix. Most over feed and under export nutrients
Overfed fish live less. And they live in nasty water conditions.
@@um02122 but in-between. Saying I hardly ever feed the fish sounds bad.

Looks great Jake!! I look forward to each and every video you upload from the new studio! I wanna come visit!
How things have changed
Your passion for the reef keeping hobby is so inspiring.
Love nano reefs!! Please continue uploading 😀😀

This has been a fun ride. Looking forward to seeing more.
Love to see this simple nano tank... Great bro!
Love this nano
Very soothing video. You have a nice voice and the music was nice as well.
Jake thanks for doing the updates on your nano- not enough done on nano tanks..
I was waiting for a focused video on this nano, looks awesome!
Those gonis look awesome! Nice little tank Jake!!
Love it Jake, you just gave me the inspiration to set up my own!!! Your vids are first class!!!!

That tank looks great

It’s peaceful right?

Love the content lately Jake.

Time for another update for the nano in 2020
I love your fish tank and thank you and see you soon.
The light I use on my nano is a current USA Orbit Pro with a little actinic blue led strip for added color pop.
I have the same tank and light. And the touch controls drive me crazy! I hate manually turning it off and on. Kessil a80 here i come
Brandon Eaker how many gallons is it?
Vibe Style 8 gallons
a80 all the way brother. Firmly believe its #2 after the AI prime
Nano looking great. Love the toadstools.
I'll be stopping by WWC Monday to get some.
Do you know what brand/model filter that is? I've never seen one like that, it looks like an internal hanging all-in-one.
I have a 10 gallon tank with at least 20 different corals. A meat coral covering half of tank. No water changes nothing. Only 1 fish and yes the key is low nutrient. I feed him 3 times a week.
"Haven't done a water change in 3 months and it has red algae along with green hair algae, kinda cute". Freaking Jake you crack me up!
Looks good 👍
AHHHH!! I haven’t had a connection to the internet in a while and I’m liking the blue hair man!! Also the nano is looking sweet :)
All the salt on the lid, do you just rinse that off in the sink and discard it? Or can you reuse it?
For a light you should check out the Aqua Knight LED it’s a cheap nano light I have running on a timer on my tank
Nice video. Looking good

Boy that thing needed a shave
Awesome vlogs! 🍻
Thanks for the advice I'm trying the same type of filtration in a 10 gallon nuvo fusion hope it works out for me
We want a clean up crew
Hey what did you use to make those holders for the hammers?? Just sold off my established 30 gallon, and am about to move across the country! I remembered this tank and want to set up the 10 gallon version of this when I move into my new place
Cool very simple tank. I’d like to see you put some of the corals on some rock. Just my idea.
Love it

Nice update. What star fish is that inside the nano? is it good for a nano tank?
It’s a Fromia and it is a good ⭐️ for a nano
Great video! Quick question- How do you decide how much buffer, acropower, and replenish to dose?
dosing a tiny little bit, like 2-3 ml every few days - is infinitely more than not dosing at all. I use a soap dispenser to freestyle my dosing.
Thanks! What kind of buffer do you use? 2-3 ml of that too?

Time to upgrade that light then Jake...AI Prime on a flexi mount would be my recommendation
A little overkill, but I think I'll try a few different ones and see which one sticks.
Got mine on a 6 gallon mixed reef 😎
I agree love the AI prime. I have mine on a 4 gallon pico. Just turned it down.
Personally if not a tall system I really like the aqua knight I have it on my 10gallon nano tank and it does great

glad I'm not the only one
What lights would you recommend to change to for this tank?
I'm going to try a few and see which one looks, works best
Nice ! 👌👌👌
How do you top of the tank ? Every day manual or a ato ? A lid will cause ph problems right? Or only stagger euphyllia growth ?
the main reason for the tight fitting lid is to practically eliminate evaporation so I don't have to top if off. The Euphyllias grow fast enough so not worried if they slow down from a little reduced pH.

meatspin has them
What size is this tank?
Nice nano
That light won’t hold up. First thing I noticed that will do your corals in.
More videos plz!!!! :)
Is the nozzle above the water or under water
Filter model?
Seems that most of the light stops before the netting.
Sorry if I missed it but what is the volume of this tank?
8 gallons
No heater on the tank?
yeah there is a preset heater that keeps it at 78F
Reef Builders is that what you keep all your tanks at? I have mine at 79.9 and I don’t think my corals like that
Am I crazy? A 5 dollar Christmas light timer would fix your problem - with the little press down prongs...
this light reverts to OFF anytime the power is interrupted.
Comment number 3, AbominableBro’s Fish are the phatest
leaning tank of pisa? or is that just me? thanks for sharing!
Why hair algae? Is the tank still not stabilized?
I mention how it gets direct sunlight for half an hour most days - that's what caused it.
do you have the same light that came with the tank on this reef?
so far
Reef Builders thankyou jake you have really inspired me since I was in 6th grade.
What is the filter system you’re using?
Just the basic one that came with it, simple powerhead with sponge and biomedia
Notification gang
Where can I get this nano tank ?
Algae filled reef tanks are like hippies... they just let the hair grow
Muito legal 😁
I would love to see some sexy shrimp in this tank, Thor ambionensis I think they are called. About a dozen or so would be nice.
I want a nano tank
you have no rock or sand which makes me think thats why you have so much hair algae
Hi guys
Who makes that tank?
JBJ
Thank you
This I’ve gotta have so I will be duplicating
If your not supposed to name fish then someone needs to tell my daughter and grandbabies they named them all
Put up a blind on the offending window?
i like
How many gallons is the nano
I want to say 8 gallons
Reef Builders that’s a good size nano. thanks for responding. made my day and I love the vids
👍😍❤
Why are you not supposed to name fish?
Dharma Bum my question exactly
It sort of bad luck...when you name the fish it dies. It’s one of those things
James M oh I gotcha I seem to have the opposite reaction the 4 fish I named lived for a long time
Hugh's Aquariums it’s a possibility though. I had a puffer that I loved and he/she died and left me in tears
Sam Costin sorry to hear that
