This is so true. I used my GH3's from 2013-2017 for professional work - finally upgraded to the GH5 because my GH3's were starting to wear out and show some quirks (I still use 'em as b-cams though) and I was making enough money that it made sense to have a camera with 2SD card slots, IBIS, 4K, and have the 10bit recording. But I'm looking now at upgrading my lighting and lens lineup currently - even though a GH5s would be a great additional body to have - precisely because I feel like the lenses and lighting will make a bigger impact on my video productions right now. 95% of the time I don't end up in situations where my footage is unusable because of low light - even if it's noisier than I'd like from time to time. My wedding clients have never commented on it - so I think its me being super noise conscious after watching too many camera reviews. Haha.

i agree with you on this, in this creative commmunity. A lens can change the whole dynamic of the image. I would say as you said, master your camera, story telling, angles, lighting bc a lens will always produce as its suppose to. People get carried away with 4k this 4k that but they lack the fundamentals of what brings it together.

I also bought a Sigma 18-35 mm f1.8 and created some quality content (in my opinion). Freelanced for 2 years with a Nikon d5500 and a $196 35mm lens. Traveled with it. Saw Trinidad like 5 times, went to Canada, shot in Miami, I didn't have the best gear but it worked! I've switched over to systems that can handle video better but most people (potential clients) just care you can produce decent quality images. Probably feels like you'll disappoint your favorite creator that you watch daily because you don't have the cash for the latest gear (that's a real thing, feeling like you have to keep up) Honestly, just start off with what gets you out there shooting sooner than later.

I am french ;), i bought the gh5 because my Canon 700d was too limited. Gh5 you have so many options ( slowmotion, picture profil, menu item, 5 axes stabilisation ). I would say it is good to start with à basic camera and do everything manually instead To buy à expensive camera and do in automatic. Lens is more important for me as you said you do not loose money! I spend so many time to compare lens it is like jungle but when you undersand the technics you buy for what you need !

Yeah for me investing in actual photography books and online courses/tutorials made all the difference. I've been using the 80D for so long with mostly a sigma 18-35, canon 10-18 and a nifty fifty and my photography/video work didn't get any better until I actually studied and learnt stuff. Better gear helps of course, but it's not everything. Good video bro 👊

Now the question becomes WHEN do I make the switch from reliable DSLR to Mirrorless when the DSLR with new lens does everything I need a camera to do? Answer based upon this video - when my DSLR stops providing me the quality I need in finished photos. Love the part about the noisy camera strap attachments. I also have a Tokina 11-16 which I only use if the look calls for it. When I do music videos, I shoot half with my kit lens and the other half with my iPhone. I try to push and maximize everything within my reach. Most people are so focused on getting the next best thing when they haven't mastered whats right in from of them, and in the long run will end up with 20 different cameras and still unsatisfied. Yes I do plan on upgrading soon, as my brand grows, but for now im putting that money aside until the time comes.

Also, I think that you should get a camera. The first point, then start getting your lens. I would say the holy trinity 11-24, 27-70, 70-200 (canon). Or the ranges that are in your camera brand. I would even say look into sigma. They still make some bomb lens a lot cheaper. Then after you master that camera and understand the basics then look into another camera. Also, make sure the camera fits your shooting needs/style I think people get caught up in the hype of new camera.

I don't know... since upgrading from an outstanding crop sensor camera with poor AF to a full frame camera with eye AF, not only has shooting become a much more enjoyable experience, but the image quality and color are leagues ahead of what I was able to get even with the best premium micro four thirds lenses in the system. So for me, there does come a time when switching bodies makes more sense. At the same time, love lenses!

  • @MoniJohnson
    @MoniJohnson 5 лет назад

Definitely lenses over bodies. My footage from my old T2i still competes with the 5 cameras I have purchased since then. BTW, lack of 4k isn't an issue for me. My newer, more expensive lenses make a huge difference in the final product though. In fact, if the T2i had a flip-out screen and continuous autofocus (I don't trust my eyes) in video mode, I could have stayed with it. It's a body with a crop-sensor and not as good as my other bodies in low light, but there are simple ways around those issue.

Also would love to get your Sony profile and setting configurations. I love my sony but don't feel that adjusted to it like I was with my canon. Keep up the great work YCimaging!

This definitely helped. I literally use an A6000 professionally as a real estate and portrait photographer, I've got 4 lens plus a vintage. I can wait but eventually, I just want full frame, so tired of crop factor. An A7III and I'll just keep it as long as I can. Just gotta find $2000 lying around.

I'm at those railroads 2 weeks ago bc I film with the T6 and low light sucks but my lighting sucked more...I adjusted my setting between 600 & 800 with f2.8 I think...and WHAT A DIFFERENCE...it adjusted my way of thinking about it...lighting and what shoots I get will be my focus....I still want to ungrade camera only bc I can't hook a monitor up to the T6

This year in June will be my second year as a content creator and I'm finding I do need to continually work on everything outside of camera equip. but I'm using a Lumix G7 which I really like except for the focus so sometime this year I'm looking to get a GH5. I don't make money with my content (yet) so I don't want to spend too much money on equipment.

I'm all for using what you have until you max out its usage potential. I have the same 2 cameras that you have in this video, and I currently use the A6000 as my secondary cam. I've used the hell out of the A6000 but now that I'm shooting everything for the most part in 4K with my A7III, and I'm trying to push my image quality on the videos I produce, I think it's about that time to upgrade... my secondary camera. (First World Problems... I know).

Features is driving me to upgrade. Shooting portraits to being able to Shoot Sports/action, need faster buffer and faster frames per second. Now I want to shoot video and have log so now I need a mirror less over a DSLR.

Great video YC, once again. I actually think it's more cost efficient in the long run to upgrade cameras as soon as possible. Here's why. If you I buy a camera now, for simplicity and context let's say it's the A7iii. I spent 2,000 for a camera. Cool. Now. If I wait 3 to 5 years to upgrade this camera and decide to sell it, here's the problem. I will only get back around $700-$800 for it. In 2022 the A7iii will only sell for at most $800. Ok, now I obviously need my upgraded camera, yes? Ok. Now let's say it's 2022, the A7iiii just came out and it's selling new for $2,200. I now have to match my $800 that I got from selling my A7iii with $1400 new dollars to equal the $2200 that I need to make the new purchase. My suggestion is as soon as an upgraded version of your camera gets announced, immediately start the selling process of the camera you want to replace. So in the A7iii example, as soon as the A7siii release date is announced by Sony themselves, start selling the A7iii. Possibly selling it BEFORE the A7siii is actually released. You can now get at LEAST $1800 from selling the A7iii today (January 6, 2019) combine this amount with only about $300-$400 to match the price of a brand new A7siii and there you have the latest camera for only $300-$400. If you do this every about 18 months within a 6 year period you would have spent only $1200 in camera upgrades with a total of 4 camera upgrades. If you wait to upgrade cameras at a rate of let's say every 3 years, within the same 6 year period you would only have 2 camera upgrades and will have spent well over $2800 in camera upgrading. So using this method not only are you ALWAYS using the latest and greatest in camera technology, but you will have spent a significantly lower amount of cash in the process. Basically upgrade your camera at the same rate you buy new cellphones. Trust me you'll save a ton of money AND it'll satisfy that itch we all have to use the latest and greatest in Camera Technology. Cheers! Oh and BTW the methodology of upgrading works with most camera equipment with an initial cost of $600 or more. So yes use this method for your gimbles and lenses as well. Especially if you are a Sony shooter. New lenses are great. Just look at the difference between an older GMaster vs the latest generation of GMaster. As we enter into more digital i guarantee you will find yourself upgrading lenses much more frequently then you think.

I have Sony a6300 with sigma lenses and I bought Fuji xt3 with kit lens. I can say I use my old a6300 more with my client work. I also used fast prime lenses with xt3 but still a6300 is better with gimbal work and more natural auto-focus with half price setup. First time I understand new gear wont make you better always.

Upgraded my camera when my canon 70d broke and it was going to cost about almost half of what I paid for. So got the A7iii and love it. I would say it makes more sense to buy better lens unless your camera breaks.

Which Canon camera would you recommend for music video, filmmaking and photography?

I just bought a Sony A7 ...like the first one from like 5 years ago.. I figured with one of the only big differences being image stabilisation, which can come in lenses, it wasn’t worth paying anymore than I did... now I’m trying to figure out the best lens and stabiliser I can get with a reasonably low budget..any help?!

The reason i'd want to upgrade cameras (I have the a6300, amazing camera btw, been using it for years) is because I need that 4K 60fps. My camera just won't give me the best of quality when using slow mo in my opinion. Also need in body stabilization cause I don't always want to depend on my Ronin M. My lens till now has given me many amazing videos (Sigma 30mm 1.4) but I do also need different focal lengths. My main thing to change right now is the camera, and then my lighting. That's about it.

First, with intellectual honesty, decide if a new camera can facilitate the needs. Several years ago I was torn between the Nikon D610 and D750, which I bought the latter because on paper it did what I wanted. Bought myself a Nikkor 50mm f/1.8 with it and ran with the combo with no looking back. Six months later I added a Sigma Art 24mm f/1.4 to my arsenal.
Around the time when Nikon announced the 105mm f/1.4, I was interested in buying the D810. Luckily I was tasked for a job and rented both. I loved the results but to purchase both, it was too daunting on the budget - the lens retails for $2200 and D810 at the time for $3300. Fortunately I got to try the 105mm on my D750 and was very pleased with the results. I came to conclusion that I should buy the 105mm and hold out on the D810 or the successor as it was due anytime and I was right, the D850 was announced.
Around February of last year I bought the Peztval 85mm f/2.2 for fun. A very specialized lens but I love using it when I can. Finally a couple months later I bought the Nikon 105mm f/1.4 and have been using it since.
But, yes there is a but, around the announcement of the D850, I have been keep on buying that. From the beginning I knew I was going to grow out of the D750 but wanted something in the middle - not the entry D610 nor the near flagship the D810 was at the time. Well, I have rented the D850 when it was announced and loved it too. When the Z7 became available for rent I tried that out. After that experience I wanted the D850 to be my next camera - that was until I went to the local camera shop. One of the guys there knew I rented the Z7 and knew my heart was on the D850. Well, I was in for a shock - the shop received a trade in from the previous day. A person traded a like new D810 (1657 shutter actuations and pristine body) w vertical grip for the new Z7. They offered me $1600 for the body and vertical grip (which retails for $460 by itself). Since November 3rd I have owned pretty much a new D810, which has 44% more megapixels than my D750 and 26% less megapixels than a new D850 but for 200% less money! So yeah, rent lenses and see what works best for you and then upgrade the glass. Rent camera bodies and wait for a deal when it happens.

I've been shooting with a t5 for 2 years now and im burnt out with it. I will never front on it though cause it made me lots of money but i need features. I need a good low level shooter and I need more ratios so i can get some good quality slow mo popping. My shooting skills are there, i just need my shooter to catch up. Sony a6500 is what im looking at or canon m50.

I feel the only time you should upgrade your camera is if your existing camera limits your creative vision ( if that makes sense). But you have to be honest with yourself on your knowledge of cameras and what stage you’re at in your filmmaking career. For example, the movie, ‘The Possession Of Hannah Grace’ was short entirely on Sony A7S ii’s. The movie ‘Unsane’ was shot in a iPhone 7. The movie ‘Searching’ was shit on iPhones, GoPro’s and webcams.
So to reiterate. If the camera does not support your vision then upgrade. But for the most part you can make great content with whatever you have. If the pros are using consumer cameras for features now a days...
