My wife and I are up for suggestions for similar new videos in the future heh heh :-)
What is the digital rev royalyy free song called? I could never find it. Also u should try formats you've never filmed a video on before like m43. The gx80 i think is a great place to start as it does amazing 4k video for its price.
Based on this video, you can perhaps make other videos like comparing same focal length lenses (say, nifty fifties) over the years, to show how they increased (or maybe decreased) in quality, ease of use and cost-to-performance ratio etc. Same can be done with cameras over the years where the megapixel stays the same (24mp in 2013 vs 24mp in 2023 for example).
Great video and it was nice to see you in front of the camera, but I think more fair comparison will be to pair the R5 with new cheap lens with RF mount.
How about the cheap camera, with the terrible lens, compared to a mobile phone!
Let's hear what your wife's top ten lenses are. We have heard the ones that you like, but maybe she has different criteria.
Who's this gentleman with Chris's voice?
Bahahaha facts
Yeah and why didn't he say "howdy" ?
Yes correct
No s required after the apostrophe
@@HezyTech 😂 we all love a pedant 🥰
DigitalRev is what got me into photography. I still follow Kai and Loc. Great to see such an homage video!
He is Lok )) And just a fun fact: Alamby is married and recently had a kid 🙃
Love that signature Kai careless handling of camera gear 🤣
The cheap cameras of today hammer some of the high-end full frame cameras of yesterday. Third-party lenses of today aren't that far off either.
I audibly winced when he set the 28-70 down on the sand
@@bardofhighrenown SAME!!
Too bad there are no cheap cameras today anymore, entry level camers as they were, it's basically out the window... Less and less places even sell new APS-C DSLRs
@@InterMaus the R50 is less than $700, and has incredible specs for what it is.
@@Augnos don't know about you but compared to ~300$ of entry level cameras of yesteryear, that's not cheap.
Love the use of DigitalRev music. Hilarious premise for the hypothetical. One mistake is getting an expensive 60MP FF camera, then realizing diffraction sets in 1.5 stop earlier. No lens can fix that😁
As a R7 owner (80MP FF equivalent) and a F11 lens i can confirm that
even with 60mp any lenses that are sharp enough won't get diffraction until F11 or so
@@hypeuprise7026 60MP is not much at all
Love the new video format! It's a lot of fun to see you do something other than technical reviews. Personally, I'd go cheap camera pro lens. Good glass is good basically forever, good bodies typically become 'outdated' after about 4 or 5 years.
Amazing! Please don't stop making these types of videos Chris. I thoroughly enjoyed this.
It was absolutely terrible watching you lay down the 28-70 on the sand - such Digital Rev nostalgia.
Please keep these kinds of walk and talk review/comparison videos coming!
Absolutely loved this vid, Chris! A new type of camera review with elements of your usual style, combined with a neat little wink back to Kai and Lok of the past haha. Nice to see a bit of an updated version of the original video. Would be nice to see you out and about shooting around some more in this way, though I'll always appreciate your top notch lens reviews! Keep it up :)
This was great! I also really enjoyed those DigitalRev videos, and really wish they'd have made more. This really nailed the feel of those, and was informative too. I'd love to see more in this style.
I guess it would have made more sense to compare the 28-70 f2 to the 24-85 f4-7.1 - so you would have compared two r lenses, one cheap and the most expensive zoom lens in the r-system.
Or use camera thats from 1995 to pare with 28-70 f2
a fairer comparison would have been as well
I think we consider for example the R7 or R10 with a RF-S 18-150 as well as budget lens with higher end camera. Since it was anyways FF vs APS-C i dont see the sense in comparing the worst possible lens from 30 years ago on a R5 vs a pretty decent, not even cheap camera from 2023 AND „superior“ glass
All i can say this video is a bit misleading. Cheap glass is not directly bad.
I love for example some super affordable, yet very good lenses. And except for a very few lenses (600mm 6.3 zoom and a 135mm 2.8, radioactive vintage lens from the 60s) basically all my lenses are noticable cheaper than my R7
And despite having cheaper glass, none of them is in any way too bad or worse than expensive glass:
EF-S 17-55 2.8 IS USM, basically the only good performing „premium“ kit lens we have from canon.
Asahi Takumar 50mm 1.4 vintage lens, cheap but awesome (just not too sharp but amazing sharp considering its from 1961 thanks to thorium inside the back element)
EF 28-135, especially great on full frame, but not so much on APS-C
Sigma 50mm 2.8 macro lenses, partially even 105 or 100mm ones somewhat cheap
Canon 70-300 lenses, the older, cheaper 75-300s also on full frame usable
and so many more! All of them cost anywhere between 20 to 200$
I was thinking the exact same thing. I don't think it makes sense to compare two lenses for this if one of them is no longer in production and hasn't been for some time.
A collab with you, Kai and Lok would break the internet!
😂🤣. I'd pay good money to watch that!
Own an ancient EOS650. It cost me 30 quid.
Bought a brand-new 24-70mm F4L to fit on it because somebody bought me a voucher for a camera shop for christmas without realising everything I own is obsolete. Now that's a thousand euro lens on a 30 euro camera.
The results were stunning. Even image stabiliser' worked. I don't think anyone in Canon ever thought the combination would be joined together. But it works flawlessly.
A bit extreme, but it gave noticeably better pictures that the original 28-80 I had.
This feels like an invitation to Kai and Lok for collaboration!
Love how the video is presented, the voice, music, script is indeed written in a way similar to DigitalRevTV!
Really missed back then when everytime their video pops out, immediately watching their shenanigans lol.
After they left, the channel did make more interesting video but less charm though.
Thanks Chris for this nostalgic reminder!
I was looking for this exatly topic, thank you A LOT Christopher, top tier video.
Whenever I needed recommendations or reviews for Camera Lenses. Yours is the only channel I always come to. Thanks for your hard work and Keep Going.
Thanks!
I was a huge fan of this style. Takes me back. Please keep these going
Love this format of video. Hopefully we'll see more of it. Also that place where he's at is just wonderful. 🤩
Fun and informative video Chris. I would love to see more videos in this format!
As long you make up your own opinion for a buying decision then…
The thing is, you get a lot of cheap, yet good performing lenses as well, in the canon world just a few i have also experience with:
ef s 17-55 2.8
ef 50 1.4 or 1.8
ef 28-135 is usm
ef 28-105 3.5-4.5
many vintage lenses
many canon lenses in general
many 3rd party macro and portrait lenses
I personally love a modern, faster body (EOS R7) and to use „budget“ glass like sigma 159-600 adapted or the RF 800 F11 or many listed above. The thing is you should not get too bad glas for a better camera, and this tamron 28-80 is probably one of the worst picks possible (just the raw numbers… over 30 year old KIT LENS for like 10$ or for free compared to a „cheap“ but modern, brand new 700$+ body?
mount on the R5 in this comparison even a RF-S 18-150 and its outperforming the 24-70 F2 in most things
Absolutely loved this video, Christopher! Cant wait to see more like this!
0:09 omg!! So glad to find a fellow DigitalRevTV fan. What a wonderful time. My favorite was their 7D torture test.
Best RUclips channel about lenses. Thank you so much for the great work you do. If I need a lens, the first move is to watch your video about it. It always helps me a lot.😊
Really enjoyed watching this “DigitalRev” style review, Chris! It was also great to put a face to the voice that we all know so well. Keep up the good work! 😀👍
i am watching your channel from the first days you started, you helped me get some amazing lenses and seeing your reviews just make my days. i am kinda happy and sad at the same time. a realisation hit me that we both got old'ish. keep on your amazing work, there are many channels about photography but none can compare to yours. it's special :)
This vid was so amazing and light-hearted as well as informative and insightful. Thanks for clearing the a lot of doubts, big fan over here! Cheers from Perú, Chris 😎
it's worth noting that it's only been a few years since the highest end cameras exceeded 24Mp, the 5D mk 4 is only 30MP.
I think the harder question is if you get a new lower end camera or a older high end camera with the same lens (this is really where the APS-C vs full frame debate can happen)
I just watched that video for the first time yesterday and now here you are Chris. Nice! Love the comparison.
At extremes it was a forgone conclusion what would be interesting would be to throw in a balanced setup - say Canon R8 + RF24-105 f/4. I suspect this would smash it. The advantage of extreme setups is when you save the money you can upgrade the neglected half of the kit and you see a step change in results
Great to see you in the shot Chris! Awesome video! Keep it up!
Love this. What a nice homage to the old DigitalRev vids. Thanks :)
Thanks for the video, Christopher! I recently sold my Sony A7 III and picked up a Sony A7 RII and used the leftover money to go towards upgrading my lens to the Sony 35mm f1.4 GM. While I’ll miss some of the camera improvements the A7 III offered, my A7 R II has a higher resolution sensor and now I get excellent photos with my much nicer lens.
I bought Sigma 50mm f1.4 art lens for my Canon 7D. Based on your review.
What a huuuge difference...
Images from Sigma are from another league even on an almost 20 year old APS-C DSLR.
I would definitely go cheap camera expensive lens over expensive camera and cheap lens. Although finding newer lenses for a DSLR is becoming very difficult.
Chris You were my first photoreview channel to watch.
Your delightful and pleasant and calm voice educated me in the field of photography equipment for morw than 10 years for now.
Thank You so much for your work!
Loved this Chris, I was also a fan of digitalrevTV content on RUclips back in the day!
Loved that Digital Rev reference. I watched that video back in the day too.
You definitely should do your reviews in this style from now on - also love the humor 😂 the asthmatic dinosaur really made me giggle.
Love seeing you on camera Chris, hope to see more of these kind of videos in the future!
One thing to note on more "expensive" cameras is the shooting experience. I love Fuji's style but their AF system leaves a lot to be desired. Bought myself an A7IV and never looked back. It's just so easy to capture what you want, it feels like it knows what subject you're trying to take a picture of.
Other than that, more expensive cameras usually have more buttons, including front and back dials, and custom buttons for various functions.
Just my two cents.
This was fun. You nailed the humour of oldschool digital rev :D
I still remember that Digital Rev video from back in the day, weird for me to say but Digital Rev TV was my childhood lol, and they definitely were the inspiring reason i got into photography ❤
This was just great, keep em coming :)
I also loved those videos by DigitalRev
Asthmatic dinosaurs in mating season 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 The best description of loud/slow auto focus EVER!
This was so cool to see the man behind the voice! Great video! Hope to see you make more like this in the future!
Life is chaotic, and I listen to CF’s voice for tranquility.
This is a fantastic comparison! Much more useful for one's worldview and understanding than one might guess.
I would prefer however to see an EF-S 18-55 kit lens on the R5 or an RF equivalent, to compare the results as of today's tech. No need to go to an unnecessarily soft and old lens in my opinion. That said this comparison was very interesting as well!
That is an excellent suggestion! I am using the new f4 lens and it is very sharp!
I enjoyed seeing you so enthusiastic! Props to the camera person as well!
Very interesting video, it answers to many questions from us beginners
I've just discovered your channel and I like it, I will keep watching many videos from you
The music at 2:35 !! Nostalgia!!!
DRTV taught me so much. Thank you Lok and Kai!
The autofocus is like an asthmatic what? 🤣 I hope you had as much fun making this old DigitalRev style video as we get watching it.
“It sounds like an asthmatic dinosaur in the mating season”
Hahahahahaha. Oh Chris, you and your sayings. Still, my favourite line is “this lens is about as useful as an ejector seat on a helicopter”.
Love the homage to DigitalRev!
This was a good laugh Christopher. I thought perhaps you scrapped the very bottom of the barrel however with the Tamron lenses…😂🎉
First comment! Love your work here so much. Happy to have a face to match the super soothing voice I've been listening to all these years :)

Great video Chris ! There is no substitute for good glass! I have the EOS R and good glass and I get stunning images !
Man, that DigitalRev format made me all nostalgic >_
Love your videos! I am new to photography and I am about to buy a new Canon T8i (Body Only). I will be buying a couple of lenses that each cost about as much as the camera. I expect great results. In the past, I have been involved with precision rifle shooting. The sport has a saying- you want to spend as much money on the rifle scope as you do the rifle. Both are equally important. I think the same is true with camera and lens...
I must say the production quality on this video was stagering. Superb job!
what a refreshing video, excellent! Poor uncle to end up in a fireworks factory, absolutely love your humor, lol 😂😃
Love this format!
you're so nice! thank you for the lovely video! I was wondering about your thoughts on the dpreview closure...how? why???
One of the important videos you have to watch as a beginner. Thanks for doing the test and showing everybody. 👍
I think the brand new R50 kind of outclassed the 30 year old Tamron lens, but still a neat video.
Digital Rev also had a pro photographer/cheap camera challenge that was pretty good.
High MP camera + cheap but good lenses for me. I had an old EF 24-85 kit zoom and it was razor sharp on my A7R2.
This may be the only video I've seen of yours where you're on screen live! Nice one!
Lovely to see you in frame Christopher 👍. Right - on with the vid.
Ok. Watched it all now. A very interesting and entertaining experiment there 👍.
Next up lets see the EOS-R5 with that expensive lens and the EOS-R50 with the Tamron 👍😂
Seriously though - that's what I love about Fuji glass. I bought an X-T2 a few years ago which is practically ancient now we have the X-T5 but the quality of images are still outstanding 👍
Nice video christopher, i started my journey in photography a few months ago but i had to go waaaaaay cheaper, i bougth got a used canon eos rebel xs + 28-105 usm lens. now ive got a 50 mm stm which is giving me way better pictures but im having fun after all. Im looking now on save money to buy a good camera body and another lens, so this video gave me some ideas, thanks a lot!
Using 'asthmatic dinosaur in mating season' to describe the focusing of the lens is a legend
I love the nostalgic music at 2:36 lol
That's actually an excellent question to ask, especially for beginner or when it's time to upgrade from kit lenses. Cheap or entry level camera + pro lenses makes more sense to me, when getting more dedicated as an amateur photographer. I had great time with a cheap camera like a Canon 800D, I rented a EF 24-70 F/2.8 for a week-end it was a game changer. Also, starting to build a collection of good lenses leaves open the option to upgrade the body at a later stage while keeping the same lenses.
Well done video Chris. I have been looking for this melody/music 2:35 - 4:20 for a long time. What is the name of the song/author?
Easy Math by Olive Musique. It's not license free though, you have to pay for it.
Why the lens will appear more important to the result. I think it's because for the subject being photographed the lens is in front of the camera and the light enters the lens first. The lens is not capable enough, and even the best camera can't do anything.
in my opinion, if u are trying to be a photographer, focus on the lens. while videographers, focus on the body. I do believe the most important part of photography is the sharpness of the photo, while video you want the video to be as stablelize as possible and make sure ur camera has a minimal rolling shutter.
The background music is so nostalgic!
So without having watched the video yet. My thoughts on the subject are; If you want the best picture quality possible, cheap body and good glass is probably the best bet, often the sensor in the entry level cameras are the same as in the high-end cameras, as long as they are the same sensor size ofc. That said for me personally I find it MUCH more joyful to shoot with a really nice camera body with a cheaper lens. Entry level bodys are aimed at beginner photographers and it tends to really show, they have loads of modes for beginners that I would never use and that just get in the way. Also cheap bodies often lack some more advanced options I want. Lastly high-end bodies often just feel so much nicer to handel with much better build quality.
this comparison was just too extreme
replace the tsrmon with a rf s 18-150 on the R5 and the cheap 18-150 wins against the overpriced 24-70
Loved this video. Do them more often. It was good and funny. Dahlek lenses do really suck.
An R5 sensor is a challenge for any lens, so of course it is going to tear an ancient Tamron lens apart at the seams. You could probably stick that f/2 zoom on an iPhone sensor and get great photos!
Oh wow! The music really brings it home! 😅 I feel old now.
And combine this amazing information with the information, that much experience (cause of practice and reflections of the results) is much more important for creating a good picture then technical skills ...
"an asthmatic dinosaur in a mating season" is not a group of words I expected to hear today.
Thanks so much for sharing another wonderful video like always, it's awesome to see you on the field making more awesome videos 👍👏🤗
Another great video! Interesting to see the face behind the voice. Although, for my style of shooting, I disagree and am happy I invested in a full frame 61mp (sigma FPL). Finding deals on used lenses and finding high value prime lenses and vintage lenses is all part of the fun for me.
I freaking love this video! I miss kai and lok in digitalrev just painlessly man handling the cameras back and fourth and background music is so nostalgic haha
great to SEE you Christopher !
Thanks for the video! Although I can't really disagree with those who emphasize glass, at 7:46 I do see that the L lens can't save the picture on the left; not only is there less detail (the R5 captures much more detail in the hubcaps), but the *colours* are way off. Look at the roof and the shutters (especially the shutters on the wall on the right side of the picture); the shutters are actually *brown* in the R50 picture!
I've also read some techies who say that a higher MP camera can also bring out the true value of non-L lenses. I've been looking to upgrade my EOS RP to an R5 (sadly I already know I can't afford the EOS R5 Mk II even though it hasn't come out yet!) as I want the extra detail for my art. I was wondering if you could do a video on the EOS R5 using non-L RF lenses, e.g., the RF 16mm, 35mm, 50mm and even, perhaps, the 24-105mm kit lens I got with my RP? Thanks! (PS - I will never give up my EOS R7 as I love it too much!)
it’s really cool to see the man behind it all showing us nice offerings 😁
Just went sailing for a week and didn`t want to bring my high end equipment on the boat. So I just used my old Sony A7 mark 1 with the wonderful Sony 24/105 F4 zoom lens. You can easily get this combination used for around 1000,- Euro. As the lens ist good, the outdated body really doesn`t do much "harm" ... obviously a bit less extreme than your example, but a real life implementation of the same principle. (PS: also brought my Sony RX10 iii for all my zoom and video needs; used around 700,- Euro. The only thing I would add next time would be one or two cheap primes like for example my sony 28mm F2 and/or my 50mm F1,8 for the low light stuff) ... Video idea ... best affordable travel combo, curious to see what your choice would be.
Chris,
I love this second person, on-location style shoot! More of this. ;)
That's Llangranog and Neptune's tooth behind you, had many holidays there when I was a child in the early 70's
Love this idea! Perhaps you could try this again and keep it 'modern' only? because budget lenses are getting better and better over the years. Perhaps throw in a third contender - middle of the road body and lens. I hope you could also one day explore best camera and lens combos for different systems at a fixed budget and see which one offers the best value.
What aperture are you using for filming this video? Thank you!
Good lord! I never heard a word you were saying when you had that RF28-70 F2 out with no camera strap!! ;)
What a beautiful place. Loved the video 🎉
I love the old digital rev review style makes it nostalgic and funny
shooting on a Canon 70D with a Sigma Art 24-70mm. $1200-$1500 USD lens with a camera I got for $300, works like a charm! My next camera im going to go mirrorless for video, but still gonna keep on a budget and save for those better lenses
Commenting before watching, but it's always been true that you prioritize the lens over the camera. In the days of film, the camera made very little difference. With digital cameras and sensors, cameras matter a bit more, but images have been lens-limited for at least a decade. So lens, lens, lens! Then camera.
I was holding my breath every time you switched the cameras around in your hands!
Dear Christopher, isn't it finally time to include the arsenal of premium and second-rate lenses for mft cameras in your test program. You will be amazed at the great image quality this sensor format makes possible. Webwide your lens reviews are unrivaled. Lumix and M. Zuiko are now waiting for your reviews. Thanks for your work and best regards Andreas
Hey brother, it would be cool to see you review old cameras that still work well today. I've been looking at micro 4/3 and Pentax cameras. Weird to handle at times, but great pics.
Imo there's much more depth to the full frame image even with a bad lens like this Tamron. There is also a small difference in the dynamic range.
Though, for many photographers it's just good enough to have a cheap camera with a decent/good lens just to make the images look "cinematic"
I love how you just casually throw it back into the bag without attaching the cap lol
When I got my first digital camera a350 back in 2008 I was not satisfied with the sharpness of the images .. I wasn’t aware that this is could he a problem from the lens as I was completely beginner with DSLR .. until one of expert friends suggest that I use sigma lenses at that time and I tried them .. I was so happy with the results and my images was a lot sharper I was so surprised with the results! .. I’ll always choose a good lens in any find body, and as they .. date your camera, and marry your lenses :)
I still say one of the best camera kits in history is a Canon APS-C body with the EF 40mm Pancake, the lens is compact and very sharp, and the APS-C bodies tend to be very lightweight as well.
Then if you want some extra reach the "EF-S 55-250mm IS STM" lens is one of the best budget zoom lenses ever created, and it will still pair beautifully adapted onto any EOS-R body.
Kinda blows away the old yarn you hear from some photographers that a good lens can be used forever. The newest glass isn’t that it’s just “new” but that it has updated coatings and far better motors and image stabilization. Great review.
