  • Are all Terrain tires really that much louder? In this video I use a decibel meter to discover just how much louder an all terrain tire is compared to a highway tire.
I changes to a slightly larger BFG KO2 from a Bridgestone highway tire.
I was not able to tell a huge difference my self at highway speeds. At lower speeds of 40 MPH I could tell there was a deeper tone, the lack of highway difference could be due to the higher wind noise of my older LX470.
I want to make clear these tires are not a big difference at all, and the noise is totally bearable, they sound just fine, and I don't regret going from highway to all terrain.

You’re amazing - this was so helpful! Putting the KO2s on my 100 series

Yup, that sums up my experience using AT tires on a unibody car. 😢
3:57 is exactly what it sound like on a concrete road.

Appreciate you doing this. I’ve been thinking about doing the same thing and wondered how much louder the KO2’s would sound. Sounds like not much.

Glad you liked it, I will say after running them for a few thousand miles they are not my favorite onroad tire, they took about 1mpg out, and have a slightly "top heavy" feeling to them my next set will be more highway. bias

My KO2s were amazing and barely gave me any tire noise

Got the same tires BFG K02 on mine. Allthough 285 / 16 inch. Sound is a bit higher than my michelin but not significantly. Fuel consumption is much higher … about 20%. And the grip on road is not as good as with michelin. For my purposes the AT are the best choice. Only in winter I drive some bridgestone wintertires. Thx for the video 💪

The fuel consumption is really high, I went from 14-15mpg daily average to 12-13 mpg daily highway and city mix. Ill be going to some local trials soon, I hope the AT pays off there.

Do you think that size 275/70/18 would rub at all if the stock front bumper was installed? I put a hold on a stock 06 lx and am trying to figure out if I should go 285/65/18 or 275/70/18

I second this question. I hear people say no rubbing with the 275/70r18 on a stock LX470, then I see people commenting that they had to cut this or that, or they had to hammer back the pinch weld. I'm not interested in doing that. Pretty much decided to go with 275/65r18, regardless of which tire I buy.

I have Goodyear Duratracs on my 4 Runner and BF Goodrich KO2s on my truck. I am trying to decide what to replace the Nittos on my 470 with.

I like these so far, I will say my MPG did go down about .5 though

@@loutwofinally took the Nittos off the LX 470, and put the Goodyear Wrangler Duratracs on it - Just like my 4 Runner. The BF Goodrich K02’s I put on my 2000 Chev 2500. New tires look great and ride awesome. I lost a fair amount of gas mileage on my pickup, but it looks and rides great!

Great video. Have you noticed a difference moving to a heavier tire? I like the KO2s but the LT275/70r18 is about 15 lbs heavier and wondering if you can feel the weight difference in road. Thanks.

One will not feel the weight as it they are on the ground below the suspension. Tire weight is a factor when it comes to fuel consumption. Trade off to be considered in this manner... Heavier construction also means higher weight, more weight more energy it takes to turn a tire.

Mercedes-Benz strongly recommends to its customers that tires should be changed at 6 years regardless of tread wear. Sooner if sun rot has started to show in hair line cracks in either the sidewall or tread areas.

The all-terrain would perform worse in every measurable metric on the road. grip, noise comfort. would have to be a very old tyre.

So Im about to blow your mind, but, the reason the tires hold so well with just a small point of contact is because there is more weight in a smaller area. If you spread the weight out more you will get less traction on wet roads. Changing the tires 15,000 miles before its time is pointless. If the tire has tread and the wear marks are not even with the tread, its still gripping just as good as a new tire.

Not true, contact area is independent of grip. Changes in an off road situation though.

Don't try mud tires your ears might bleed. I don't even hear my tires over the drone of the exhaust.
