Honestly, someone should have talked to Tyra about cutting the hair of dark skin contestants. It's not something that is normally discussed and that's why you hear the contestants are afraid of looking masculine. Dark skin women have always been minimized and seen as masculine just because it's one way prejudice and racism rears it's head. I don't care if you think this exists, because it does and happens to dark skin women like me. I think Tyra should have known better than to do some of these makeovers for shock value too.
Tyra, unfortunately, does not care about any of the contestants. She cares about what will get her ratings and money. Even if it makes her racist and sexist towards her own race and gender. You’d think she would with the way she preaches being comfortable in your own skin but she just means comfortable in the skin someone else deems perfect. I obviously don’t know anything about being a woman of color but I do know hair is a very, very important and serious part of culture. To sit there and cut it off or treat it like it’s just another thing is so disrespectful. I feel like all the meltdowns in this video were justified. You can’t just start messing with someone’s hair and expect them to be cool with it. It also felt like she was trying to put all the women of color in a box, giving them all the same haircut. It’s like you said, it plays into the prejudice and racism of “you all look alike” crap. The producers, Tyra, the judges, they should all know better. All women; however they look, should be able to make the choice for themselves on how they want to look. When someone feels good, that’s when you’re going to get the best photos anyway.
Personally i thought all of the dark skinned women looked absolutely stunning with short hair, they have amazing bone structure and features and it highlights their beauty. But it makes sense they shouldn’t have to do it if they don’t like how it looks on themselves.
@Terri Badger - First...Tyra ABSO-FREAKIN-LUTELY did the "makeovers" for shock value & ratings!! Its BEYOND irritating when they say we don't cut your hair just to cut it because they surely did and we could ALL see it!! Second - I'm clearly white but I see what you are saying about dark skinned women feeling masculine when they had short hair because we watched several break down over that fact after Tyra cut their hair. But I can't see that it's a racial thing because look how many white girls had even worse freak outs after getting their hair chopped because they too looked masculine. I do feel that women with short hair are treated differently by a large portion of society. However I don't see it as a racist problem but rather a FEMALE problem. No woman should be treated like she's less feminine due to the length of their hair. NO WOMAN NO MATTER WHAT HER RACE
Thank you for this comment! As a white person this wouldn’t have even crossed my mind how this would have further affected the dark skinned ladies!! They looked gorgeous to me but completely can understand why they were always so reluctant to shave/cut it regardless.
This makes a lot of sense. I’m a white Swede and I never ever considered this when I watch ANTM as a teenager, but now that I’m older (and hopefully wiser), I can’t believe I never thought about the racial dimension. It did cross my mind when I was watching this, so thank you for clarifying things further and allowing me the opportunity to learn more.
Because letting hair stand in the way of something you say is your life's DREAM is stupid and immature tbh. They're not signing a life contract that says they have to have this hair for the rest of their life. And hair grows back. And it is so hard to get into the modeling industry, it just makes you look so ungrateful. If you don't care much about modeling that's fine, but the point of being on this show is that it's your life passion and you would do anything for it.
@@lalaitscherryxo1711 - A LOT of the makeovers were terrible though. They were done for shock value and not to genuinely help the girls. Some makeovers were intentional sabotaging their chances at winning the competition (which was likely rigged anyway). If you watch the Oliver Twixt interviews, a lot of the girls call out Tyra for the BS surrounding makeovers. Did you know that after the makeovers, they didn't provide the girls with the proper tools or education to keep their hair in good condition and manageable? @@danakscully64 yeah I definitely think the lack of care they provide sucks. There were a lot of raggedy weaves and fried yellow blondes. That being said I would still do it for my lifelong dream. Not when their hair is actually damaged in the process.
@@lalaitscherryxo1711 Here is the thing about “your dream”... it’s reality tv. This show did nothing for any of these girls careers. Most of these girls didn’t even get the prize they were promised for winning. The Jays did an entire expose thing on Live. And in REAL modeling, they do not drastically change your hair. You get a wig, extensions, and hair pieces. They do not do any of this unless the model decides to. Because what one company wants won’t work for others. If they want you blonde on Tuesday and Brunette and Friday- you get a wig. They gave white girls weaves- girls hair was thinning and falling out after the show was over. And what did they get out of it? Nothing.
The worst makeovers were the two where they were basically forced(unless they wanted to get kicked off) into cosmetic dentistry. I couldn't imagine shaving down my natural tooth structure to have a more "marketable"gap. Or Dani who was talked into getting rid of her gap that she was proud of.
They gave Joanie the WORST veneers! They were all the same size and just looked so unnatural and honestly painful. It was like she couldn’t close her mouth around them. I felt so bad for her.
Jay Manuel liked to give these models hell for being upset over their makeovers, when I'm pretty sure he had the same spiky silver hairstyle for almost the entirety of him being on the show. He had dark hair in C1, and had longer hair for C11, but aside from that you never see his hair change whatsoever. I'm sure he wouldn't have been too happy if his hair got buzzed, bleached, or had some ugly curly weave sewn in either.
“Those red bumps right there, especially in the tight spots that’s normal, that’s the beauty is pin thing just got to suck it up” that’s why she had no hairline for a long time and neither did Naomi Campbell. No edges, no hairline. Ladies that is called traction alopecia, those bumps mean your hair is being pulled it is too tight and you should take them down ASAP. :)
@Hannah Scudder ~ I agree!! I felt so bad for her. She was gorgeous and Tyra F'd it up on purpose IMO! It was almost like if she REALLY saw potential she sabotaged them. Oh and she HATED pageant girls. IMO that's why she did what she did to Cassandra. She does nothing but mock and bad mouth pageants.
No, Tyra. A weave should not be so tight that it causes those tension bumps. That means it is pulling your real hair out at the follicles. She has to know that. I hate when people give bad and damaging advice to impressionable younger people.
Can you imagine them telling Tyra "With that forehead + 2 that she would have to buzz cut her hair and shave her eyebrows and wear dark brown color eye contacts. She'd be pissed.
Haven’t even watched yet, but seeing Jael in the thumbnail isn’t fair!! She sat there for eight hours trying to get extensions, which they should’ve known weren’t going to work, and then had to take it all out... she was allowed to be upset
Poor Jael. She was such a beautiful person that experience so many personal demons. She suffered from a serious drug addiction after the show and later died after losing her battle to breast cancer. I hope she is finally at peace
Tyra needed to stop treating these girls like her personal Barbies. Guarantee if someone had told her early on that she had to get a blonde pixie cut she would’ve fought it. Jokes on them anyway Cassandra Jean looks hot as hell with long dark hair and she’s doing just fine for herself without their help.
Jael's "meltdown" was understandable. 8 hours in a chair, get the whole makeover done and then have to have it taken out and redone. Id cry too... after going off!
About Jeana , production played her dirty when Tyra said she was going to get a new wig that looks like her natural hair from childhood and then NO , we will remove you old wig , shave your head ... IKR Tyra is not okay. Did you watch Jeana's video she has about her experience with Tyra. It confirms all the speculations about how manipulative and just evil Tyra actually is
I also don’t like how the narrator says that she hid her alopecia to make the video go along with the clip when in reality, they straight up lied to her and she was emotional.
The way they treated Cassandra was cruel. At the time it aired I thought she was being a brat and not a good sport but she was treated unfairly in my opinion.
@@paul8926 i disagree, the haircut was atrocious though granted if they had done the shorter hair like tyra wanted it could have looked good but i think her long brown hair suited her better imo
Jeanas makeover had a huge impact on me when I saw it as a kid. I never knew that someone could go through that, and it was beautiful to see her reclaim her bald head. Years later, shes said that she said the show exploited her alopecia- she has every right to feel that way, but it doesnt mean that it didnt touch the hearts of many young girls and redefine beauty. I hope shes well and I thank her for going through that
The fact that Terra had to go through that uncomfortable makeover just to be sent home right after, just because she didn't like it at first, it's really messed up. Production were very abusive.
I can’t blame Bianca for the breakdown. There are a lot of people, man or woman, that would have a moment if they were told that their hair was so damaged that it had to go. However, here’s my question: why did they not do some kind of consultation between the stylists and the models before deciding on and attempting the makeovers? Certain things do not work with certain hair texture. They should have done some sort of assessment before then, and they would have been able to see some things ahead of time. Things like, “Okay, this girl has really damaged hair, so it really needs to go,” or “Her hair is really fine. This type of weave is not going to hold with it.”
@Anon Ymous ~ because they didn't care! They did so many styles that didn't work with the hair type and several that were just plain ridiculous. They didn't GAF!! It was all about ratings and money
I stopped watching the show after that. it was _awful._ she was bawling, "i just wish they had done this _before they cut all my hair off!"_ and they did this in front her _sister_ (who was completely powerless to stop it).
When a contestant does not want a short haircut and they get it anyway, they are not just taking hair away from them, they are taking away their confidence. Pretty important to have confidence in a freakin' modeling contest!
I would be upset if they have me put in a full weave for 8 hours like they did with Jael and then " No , we will cut you hair like pixie cut " .. I would be pissed !!!
Jael did not have a meltdown about getting her hair chopped off. She had a breakdown about sitting in a salon chair in pain for 8 hours only to have them change their minds about what they wanted. Who wouldn't feel like having a "meltdown" about that painful waste of time?!
I can't blame any of them for freaking out. They're models; they literally make a living off their looks. So when you want to do something drastic to their hair it's not like a whiny child throwing a fit but rather a person concerned about their goddamn career. And we all know they do some of these things *knowing* it'll really upset the girls because TV drama, not because it'll legit look good on them. Also, shearing off a woman's hair has been a method of punishment for centuries. Now, short hair on a woman is not a problem at all if that's what she wants but if it isn't...yeah. Giving a woman with 3 feet of hair a pixie cut when she doesn't want that is a form of psychological fuckery.
What is it with these awful, yellow, brassy blonde cuts? There were like three in this video that looked like something a 15-year old who failed at bleaching their hair at home would..
I hate that makeovers we’re forced. It’s sad to think someone like Tyra would say that to these girls that without the makeover they won’t ever be enough
Giving the girly twin short hair and the tomboy twin long hair was definitely to start a rivalry between them. Not so people would look at then and think 'oh thats that girl' or whatever.
They did Terra of Cylcle 15 DIRRRRTTTTTYYYY!! Cut all her hair off and then immediately eliminated her! Of course she wasn't making them "believe the makeover"!! She didn't want it. She didn't like it. Yet they gave her NO time to adjust. That was crap! If they did that to show they weren't putting up with makeover tantrums then Tosh in Cycle 23 should've gotten the boot! But they kept her because she was a twin and they wanted to show the comparison! Bull!
I think Tyra took things way too far. At times. And when she had teeth filed, that was it. That gal has to live with her dental health for LIFE. Dental issues can be fatal, and dental anything is costly. To deliberately shave your teeth or carve a gap is removing protection.
Honestly, hated how ANTM 24 usea Jeana to get fame and just to play with her. She said in an interview that she was so emotional bc her original makeover was her childhood hair, and then they changed it for the bald head. I also dont get why they diyed Cherish hair even reader, like, it looked literally the same as before
“We’re not making decisions for shock value” My brother in Christ, I saw the application form for ANTM and it has a number of questions explicitly designed to sniff out sources of drama.
2:58 "We're not making decisions for shock values" Mhm, yeah sure. I always loved the makeover episodes as a kid, but as an adult I really hate them and would wish for ANTM to stop with this. Every single "Meltdown" is justified in my opinion. No, these barely grown-ups do NOT have to let their hair cut or dyed. And I mean "barely" in an absolutley non mocking way. "This is only hair, you can let it grow" Sure you can, but just imagine letting your hair grow for years, keeping it healthy, spending hours caring for it, only for some random people to cut it off for a TV Show, that hardly brings any success. "This is only hair, you can re-dye it later" In fact, no, you can't really. I am a natural brunette, and let my hair get bleached, because I wanted them white. The damage was there, even though I let the job be done by professionals. And I don't even wanna talk about how it would be the other way around. And I always hated how they always made the girls look like psychos if they refused. Even though most of them were more like "I do not feel comfortable with this" in the beginning and only started crying later. Yeah, let them go to a professional hair stylist nearly noone can afford, pamper them, make them feel pretty and neat, and let them decide by themselves whether they want a drastic change, thats how it should be! Also, why did they make Eva 3:44 look 10 years older AND like a massive Karen?
Some of these girls had severe damage to their hair and scalp. Not to mention some of these makeovers are NOT versatile. Mohawks, tons of extensions, horrible coloring and the list goes on we’re not good for employable models. It was definitely done for shock value. I feel so sorry for Jada. To disregard her feelings was just too much. I BLAME TYRA.
Some of these makeovers worked but honestly some didn’t and I feel bad that after going through all this a lot were quickly eliminated thereafter. It was just psychological torture for shock value.
"We're not making decisions for shock value." Okay, so why not give the girls some time to adjust the fact that you're about to cut 15+ centimeters of their hair? My opinion is that many of the girls overreact, but I would be in shock if someone told me "I'm gonna give you a sidecut this instant!". I took MONTHS to decide that I would get a sidecut and cut and shave my hair, it was not something I just did. Many overreacted, but it is justified overreaction.
I really feel for the girl at number one. I did pageants for 15 years (ages 4-19) and hair is a very big part of the image. Like Big hair, long hair, sexy hair. Not a pixie cut. I was in pain watching when it first aired and I'm in pain watching it again.
They kept referencing Mia Farrow, Twiggy, "the pixie cut", the buxxcut, but never actually went through with any of those cuts. The cuts were always like an inch too long to actually be similar to those edgy styles. They always left the models looking like they were starting to grow out that cut (source- have actually had a buzzcut and later grew my buzz into a Mia Farrow style), of course that awkward length leaves people feeling off. You promised a buzzcut and delivered a pixie that's 3 months overdue for a trim.
I've grown my hair long & got it cut short so many times in my life. No big deal. But not only have friends & family melted down for one of my haircuts, frequently the hair technician would keep asking me during the process if I was alright, clearly anticipating emotional turmoil on my part, that never manifests.
I guess I don't understand the comment after Catie said "I feel like my hair makes me look like a boy. I don't want to look like a boy" that by 'today's standards' that would've gotten her kicked out of the competition? Why? She's not being derogatory to anyone. She is saying SHE doesn't like HER hair that short and it makes HER FEEL unfeminine. She's not allowed to have her own feelings about it?
How the hell would that even get her kicked off? If anything, I’ll still be thinking “women not wanting short hair because they think they look like a boy can probably be blamed on society”
16:59 what about her ? She kind of deserves an honorable mention. She was also eliminated that same episode, and she look great before the makeover, but that "no eyebrows and dark hair" look, doesn't suit her at all.
7:58 if they had styled her hair exactly like this one frame for the entire season instead of doing a weird fauxhawk then she wouldve done so much better
They used makeovers as psychological torture. They ruined some of the girls hair. A basket weave should never go on a girl with fine hair.

I think it’s because they probably make up their minds who’s staying and who’s going before they even take them to elimination and they want to get the last bits of entertainment out of them.
They probably get them to sign contracts, too, so they’ve covered themselves for any future suing.
As someone who once worked in a hairdressers, I can tell you that the environment in these places are EXTREMELY bîtchy.
Gây Men are the worst - they may be fun friends, but they’re insanely difficult to work with, always.
Jeana being very emotional and tearful is absolutely 100% justified, especially because she thought that she would be getting a new wig instead of going bald.
She's the only one that had the right to break down.
The same happened to Jael, imagine sitting at 12 hours for extentions and then all of the sudden, they announced her to have her hair chopped down.
She did look very beautiful bald.
Yes and the fact that she pushed through and got quite far in the competition is so amazing to see
@@margarethmichelina5146 right. I thought Jay was being so insensitive toward her. She wasn't crying because of the style she was getting. She was upset because she just sat there for 12 hours for nothing. That would've taken a toll on anyone
As a redhead, I’m upset that the judges wanted to dye that models hair to a more artificial shade of red. Red hair is never the same after it’s dyed (from the multiple stories I’ve been told)
How would it never be the same. The color is growing out your roots the chemicals can’t alter virgin color hair naturally produces
@@tajsimms8976 I've heard from the experience of relatives, friends, & others that when they dyed their naturally red hair, it never grew back as vibrant and was more muddled. I can't explain why but somehow red hair seems more fragile when it comes to dying it

@@tajsimms8976 The chemicals alter the folicle and the color does not come back the same.
That's a myth. Your hair grows out of your head, so color can't change how your hair comes out.
“We’re not making decisions for shock value” that’s...literally exactly what they did. In every season.
The makeovers were fun but they were fucked up with some of their choices and forcing the girls to go through with them.
I know!! It was absolutely manipulative shock value and for views. That whole line of judges and photographers should be ashamed of themselves.🙄😤😤
I agree! That's some gaslighting b.s., can't believe he actually said it.
@@julesrules7297 I stopped watching after Tara ... i remember them telling ppl that they can cry if they need to, then it turned out !?? _that was "the challenge"._ it was WAY WORSE than what this video showed. "I just wish they would have cut me BEFORE they cut my hair!" and her sister was still in the competition.
imagine someone hurting your sister like that in front of you and not being allowed to say anything. and then feeling like you have to keep participating in that sadism. i couldn't stand it.
it would take me YEARS to get my length back. my hair is STRAIGHT. bullies who give their targets a swirly aren't that cruel. this was devastating to watch.
Tyra and the other producers really were downright sadistic.
Yes. Joking to cut somebodies hair off until they cry isn't funny, it's sick.
@Terri Badger -
First...Tyra ABSO-FREAKIN-LUTELY did the "makeovers" for shock value & ratings!!
Why is the narrator so judgmental?! The girls are justified in their breakdowns... A lot of girls, are very attached to their hair...
Attached to hair. Now that is the psychological issue dear.
ANTM is a reality show, not a modeling competition.
@@danakscully64 yeah I definitely think the lack of care they provide sucks. There were a lot of raggedy weaves and fried yellow blondes. That being said I would still do it for my lifelong dream. And my comment is mainly geared towards the ones who cry and even consider going home for having their hair cut/just feel they look ugly. I just think that's childish.
Nothing.
For Tyra to see Molly's weave and not see how absolutely wrong it was is very telling of her level of
"professionalism"
The worst makeovers were the two where they were basically forced(unless they wanted to get kicked off) into cosmetic dentistry.
I couldn't imagine shaving down my natural tooth structure to have a more "marketable"gap. Or Dani who was talked into getting rid of her gap that she was proud of.
And Dani today is very successful as a model and still has her gap!
They gave Joanie the WORST veneers! They were all the same size and just looked so unnatural and honestly painful. It was like she couldn’t close her mouth around them. I felt so bad for her.
@@cheesecake134 definitely a rush job. Producers want the before& after as quickly as possible rather than as accurately.

Same with Ms. jay who almost always wore his hair long, and in straightened styles.
While sure, some of them looked better with their new looks, this is still psychological torture to these poor girls.
Mr. Jay: We don't do things for shock value.
Me: Sure Jan. .

Kari's makeover was awful, she looked so much better as a brunette. I think the makeover contributed to her going out not long after.
Maybe keep the blonde but not bleach her beautiful eyebrows :(
And oh my god the eyebrows
It was awful, I felt so bad for her
Her Brunette was much better but if they were going to bleach it then make it platinum at least. Yellow un-toned hair doesn't work.
I agree 100 percent.
No, Tyra. A weave should not be so tight that it causes those tension bumps. That means it is pulling your real hair out at the follicles. She has to know that. I hate when people give bad and damaging advice to impressionable younger people.
Right they don’t even know how to do weave 🤨
Can you imagine them telling Tyra "With that forehead + 2 that she would have to buzz cut her hair and shave her eyebrows and wear dark brown color eye contacts. She'd be pissed.
Omg 😂😂😂😂
Someone should have told her something. I wanted so badly for someone to go off on her.

I was scrolling comments during this part of the video and was thinking exactly this. Hello 2021!
Amen!
I feel like Tyra Banks is jealous of these models' beauty and confedence, so she wants to runied it
Tyra needed to stop treating these girls like her personal Barbies. Guarantee if someone had told her early on that she had to get a blonde pixie cut she would’ve fought it.
Jokes on them anyway Cassandra Jean looks hot as hell with long dark hair and she’s doing just fine for herself without their help.
I hate that the elimination was pretty much right after the makeovers, so some people got the haircut for no reason
She said in a interview with Oliver TwiXt that she cries when she is mad .. So was those tears of sadness ?? .. I guess not !!
IKR Tyra is not okay. Did you watch Jeana's video she has about her experience with Tyra. It confirms all the speculations about how manipulative and just evil Tyra actually is
glad someone pointed this out. totally awful what they did
I also don’t like how the narrator says that she hid her alopecia to make the video go along with the clip when in reality, they straight up lied to her and she was emotional.
Brandy was annoying, she got pissed when they weren’t going to give her a makeover and then she gets one and still wasn’t satisfied.
Maybe she expected some plastic surgery. ✌️😁

I hope shes well and I thank her for going through that
What they did to Jeanna Turner was so upsetting, but amazing. I'm glad she embraced it. She's the most beautiful contestant ever.
Yeah especially since they kept chopping her hair and she didn’t know how short she’d get it
@Anon Ymous ~ because they didn't care!

R.I.P. jael she will be missed . (If you guys didn’t know she died )
Jael did not have a meltdown about getting her hair chopped off. She had a breakdown about sitting in a salon chair in pain for 8 hours only to have them change their minds about what they wanted.
Who wouldn't feel like having a "meltdown" about that painful waste of time?!
Also, when they told her "I understand the tears for ONE minute..." like...dude...you're a sociopath.
Bem-vindo a vida das mulheres negras
Now all Eva wears is super short hair and looks FANTASTIC!

Funny that Tyra bullies these girls to get a short haircut when Tyra herself was never seen without a straight weave or a wig.
I’m sure Tyra enjoys the power she has over these makeovers. You can see it I. Her face
I swear they would give girls makeovers and give some of them bad ones on purpose just for the meltdown they have after seeing it and not liking it.
Jeana did not have a meltdown. She was not negative about her makeover, she was emotional about a medical condition.
"We're not making decisions for shock value."
Okay, so why not give the girls some time to adjust the fact that you're about to cut 15+ centimeters of their hair?
My opinion is that many of the girls overreact, but I would be in shock if someone told me "I'm gonna give you a sidecut this instant!". I took MONTHS to decide that I would get a sidecut and cut and shave my hair, it was not something I just did. Many overreacted, but it is justified overreaction.
Control freak? It’s literally her own hair wtf
Bre is always always always so damn professional. The way she speaks always conveys peace even when she’s upset.

Well, in the end she married Stephen Amell so she's living her best life now.
I totally understand the red head girl cause red hair are so much unique!
Tbh I now appreciate "Germany's next Topmodel" way more bc Heidi never really messes up the girls' hair THAT much 😂
I really feel for the girl at number one.
I think they meant it was more whiney than they tolerate on the show now.
How the hell would that even get her kicked off? If anything, I’ll still be thinking “women not wanting short hair because they think they look like a boy can probably be blamed on society”
