@@Nocturnalux I bet the girl who let the dentist widen her gap really regrets it now. Any dentist who would damage someone's teeth for vanity is just unethical.
@@PerpetuallyAnnoyed Absolutely. Any reality TV show that includes permanent bodily modification should not be allowed to exist, period. It is one thing if you have a gap tooth, another one is you widen it artificially...with time, the gap is likely to be widening and in a couple of years it may cost you your teeth!
@@Nocturnalux she actually did get it fixed. They compromised and had the gap significantly smaller reduced but still noticable instead of closing it completely.
Girl: "im uncomfortable, the guy is touching me, my friend died, im anxious, i was molested and i'm traumatized, im afraid of heights, etc" Tyra: "When i was 16 i was in Paris and i went through the exact same thing and i had control over that bc that's what models do, so that's no excuse. You're eliminated"
So true i'm a star and completely out of touch with reality, did you so no, oh well your not trying it's really not that i'm a massive bitch because people can relate to me i went to paris. 🤢🤮
When she would say that I would be like damn bitch I don’t think so you never have control over sexual harassment, being a model is hard I was doing modelling when I was younger so glad I got out of it I was far too skinny
I’m sorry but this is a fucking business. If a client hires you for a specific shot and you can’t do it you’re out! What she went through is tragic but girl. This is a modeling competition.
same - I used to totally love this show and just slowly grew out of it. i haven't watched it in more than 10 years. Now i am horrified at the stuff that I accepted as 'entertainment' - they were horrible to those women. This could have been a great platform to push for change and instead they just reinforced a lot of the terrible things that are done to women in the industry.
@@LucyLioness100 Thank you 😊. I am definitely in a much better place in my life and so very humbled and grateful for it all. I hope all has gone well for you , too!!🙏🏽
This is abuse. Forcing these girls to do something they are not comfortable with. Sexual harassment and abuse. Never let someone force you to pose naked. What happens to these photos ? Who has them? This show should be canceled
Abuse when they actually signed up the contract or waver to do nude all u see is drama its a reality tv show they come there with a consequences they were not" forced" its a part of their contract as a contestant.
Just for the record straight. Before a new season begin they already planned every weeks photoshoot so it was coincident that kahlens friend died exactly the day when they about to shoot that 7 deadly sin. I admit maybe they gave the 'wrath' to her because of episodes drama but atleast kahlens did a great job doing that
Let's not forget how Jael (may she rest in peace) also had to deal with her friend's death and had to do a photoshoot pretending to be death... The show is just wicked and nasty
Remember when someone literally got hypothermia after repeatedly trying to tell the photographer and staff that she wasn’t feeling okay and something was wrong, and then got chastised in judging for not speaking up? She literally told you but you didn’t listen. And the contestant who cheated on her boyfriend and then they recorded and aired both her and her boyfriend’s side of the conversation while she was sobbing on the ground trying to hide from the cameras?
Yes that was CariDee. She ended up winning. They made such a big deal too when she asked Nigel if he pulled the stick out of his ass since the last judging. They made it such a dramatic thing but Nigel even later admitted that they played that up in editing and he actually made a joke back to her after she said that to him.
They did Isis so wrong. Even back then I knew they were being disrespectful. Producers included simply because they kept all of that disgusting footage in
As disgusting as they treated Isis it really humanized transgender people for me so much. Like I was so disgusted but it was the first time I'd ever seen how harmful anti trans language and behavior was to the recipient and definitely made me take a hard look at some of the humor of the time
Well would You have liked it if they didn’t include footage like that? I thought it was informative to hear that there r people that have those thoughts and made it very clear how ignorant some people could be. If they never aired what Clark said then we’ll never kno what trans models or people go through on a daily basis
I wanted to cry watching those scenes. She's still modeling today and she had a part in When they see us. She's more beautiful than ever, I'm so happy she's so strong and living her dreams. She's my favorite contestant 😍
and Tyra's iconic "we were all rooting for you speech"... when you look back it it, was really not justified at ALL. Tiffany reacted very understandably to being voted off for me.
@@ronnie6534 right? like I recently rewatched it and, honestly... knowing Tiffany's background I completely understood and even resonated with her reaction. I'd wanna joke it off too, I hate crying over something I can't change
ANTM was always toxic -- then and now. Tyra's ignorant, violent outburst directed towards Tiffany was made into a popular meme. She is a mean girl and a bully!
I agree, whenever I watched that episode I'll always skip that part since it made me feel so uncomfortable. I can't imagine how Tiffany stayed there listening to Tyra, I'd have slapped the shit out of Tyra. How entitled must Tyra have to be, to believe she can yell at a girl just for not being sad over been eliminated from her show.
I started to believe you. She kept saying that Naomi was a bully, but herself bullied other girls using nationwide TV show. Naomi had no issue with Iman & Veronica Webb during her era, except Tyra. I guess public know who the real villain is.
I was only into ANTM for one season and I had no idea what the context for the meme was. I feel bad for Tiffany, because she can't even escape it since it became a meme. I don't think I'll ever reference it again.
When they mistreated women for their hips, like they can't actually control the shape of their hips. Cassie was so thin and she had wider set hips. It was her f*&^ing bone structure, people.
@Mara L yes but they could reject her in the pre auditions. Not every person applying is selected to be televised. They could have eliminated her in the beginning. They just wanted to have issues for views. That's the sick part.
Mara L sorry but if designers can only design clothes for a single type of body they SUCK as a designer and shouldn’t be in the industry 🤷🏼♀️ you should be able to make clothes that look good on everyone, not just a size 0
@@courtneykent988 seriously. I’m 5’3, 122 lbs and those asshole designers would say I’m fat because I have hips and a butt. Their unrealistic image of how women’s bodies are is psychotic.
I have a feeling Tyra thinks she can get away with her terrible attitude about race and representation because she is black. In her mind, that 'absolves' her.
Tyra flip-flopped a lot. I remember she told one contestant her braids were not "versatile" enough, so gave her a weave instead. Then a season or two later gave a contestant waist-length braids.
People give Tyra a lot of flax for these photoshoots but forget that Jay Manuel was the creative director behind ALL of these photoshoots. He was also notorious for having very little empathy when pushing these girls into doing something they were uncomfortable with often giving them an ultimatum if they refuse. He really should be getting just as much hate as Tyra but somehow he’s skirted under the radar.
He's actually come forward about how little choiced he had and how he was treated if he spoke up. Tyra treated him like total crap when he tried to leave the shown
Go watch Jays Chat, he Jay Alexander and several other guest talk about each cycle, including the infamous different races photo shoot. He even said he was very uncomfortable with that.
@@RheaBaby27 he had a lot of choice, he could have said no and just walked away. It’s like trying to excuse the nazi soldiers because they were “just following orders”. He’s still responsible for his own actions, Tyra is a horrible person but he played along with it for a check and now he’s trying to back peddle because the ship is sinking… he gets no pity from me 🙄
It’s really eye opening when you’re older and you know to take a step back and really think about a situation as a whole and realize that the behavior of some people was really messed up and very attention-seeking and drama inducing. It’s hard not to get caught up in the drama of a show like this. I used to, but now since I’m older do I realize what behavior like this means. Great video, Mojo!!!
that's why it's funny when you look back at being young ppl tell you when you're older ull regret this or try to give u advice & tot. Ignore them, these girls were doing things for the first time and it happens to be on national TV can't imagine!
taurnguard Yeah, that’s also what I’m saying. For some people, it can be super easy to get caught up in the drama of it all and forget that these are real people and real lives.
Lu Lu yeah she was, but Tyra held SOOOOO much power in this show that she practically controlled everything. And she knew that what that guy said to Winnie was pretty effed up ESPECIALLY because she expressed her discomfort to the “helpful nickname” so Tyra could have most definitely done or said something about that to the photographer. I’m pretty sure that she controls who and when she has certain photographers on set and if she wanted to she could’ve had a private conversation with him, told him that that wasn’t ok, and made him apologise to Winnie. But she didn’t.
I agree with you. I know it's Yu Tsai thing, but Tyra is the one who approved the editing result. I can't believe they use people's uniqueness as the object of insult.
Are some people really fans of Winnie Harlow? That girl is one awful person. It's sad that people don't seem to realize that, just because she hangs out with Kim Kardashian and other celebrities.
Bojan Tomic oh I’m not a fan of her but when I first saw that scene I got so mad and wanted to defend her. I only kind of found out about her nasty ass personality recently. If it was any other person with vitiligo, or any condition really, I’d still be making the same argument. One of my “uncles” (family friend) has vitiligo and I can only imagine some of the horrible things he gets told.
That was definitely one of my top least favorite things about this show. Even a few years ago when I was like 12 watching how the other girls treated Isis. I absolutely hated it but I’m so happy that she went for what she wanted and even if she didn’t win I think it’s amazing how far she got since a lot of people were against her
I've never been a fan of Tyra in general and its mostly because of this toxic dump. She abused her platform and set a very bad precedent for the modeling industry
being a model was not a smart decision for someone who feels that way. modeling means being free and happy with all of your body, and enjoying having people see it. If you don't like that, then being a model is not smart.
I remember when Amanda got in trouble for basically being blind and not being able to see the stage before walking it. Eva chimed in and was like “well my shoes didn’t fit but I still walked!” And the judges agreed... Bruh!!
Same... we came up with the idea because of the video going viral about how the judges spoke to Danielle about her tooth gap, but we were so shocked with all of the other stuff that came up during our research!
@@MsMojo lol "research" I wanted to believe you guys would do your due diligence and really suss out those nuggets of truth on both sides, but this is beyond the pale, poor workmanship. You are catering to your base, so I guess, kudos. Disinformation central.
I was addicted to this show but also here for the tea. Sad now that she discouraged the pre med student. We need doctors! It’s not uppity to be able to save lives!
I can’t help but feel like future historians in the year 3000 are going to look at ANTM to draw points on everything that was wrong with society at the time
That Nigel Barker judge: "you will have to find a way to overcome your blindness" 🙄 I guess that will be much easier than him finding a way to overcome his idiocy
Saying it “hasn’t aged well” is an overstatement because the show is not that old and it even got lots of backlash and criticism when it first aired. I’d say it’s not that the show hasn’t aged well but more so the target audience has grown up and learned that many elements of the show are negative despite being entertaining. I’d say the show is a guilty pleasure of mine but there were many things that had me going “WTF”. As for those who wondered why contestants who were discriminatory weren’t eliminated, it’s because they were only judged for their performance and behavior during shoots and challenges, not outside of that. It’s unfortunate, but that’s how it was.
it was the transphobia for me. "I'll kick that man right out" girl there's a line between being competitive and being transphobic. she should've been disqualified right after she made that comment.
Yes. But even more than the contestant, Tyra is the one who should be blamed. Because she created the environment in which such behavior was accepted without any backlash, at all. Most of the girls on this show are very ignorant, young and lacking life experience so I am not at all surprised they should express such views...I am much more bothered by the fact that Tyra did nothing to correct them. She had an opportunity here for intervening and teaching them a valuable lesson. It's not up to Isis to do so, she is in a very vulnerable position as it is, but up to Tyra who is the one in charge and with power. Imagine how powerful it would have been if she had showed these girls how rotten their attitude was...and then yes, by all means, eliminate them if need be.
@@Nocturnalux exactly! She had the chance to correct them and the platform to raise awareness that those comments are derogatory and offensive and yet she didn't. I mean, that's the same woman who had models in blackface. Nothing she does surprises me anymore.
@@tmiletticc I remember being utterly stunned at the blackface episodes...! I wonder if Tyra thinks it's okay since she's black...? I have no idea. Did anyone refuse to do blackface? Because if I were on the show, I am almost sure I would have refused! I am part Indian (from India, that is) but am white. In blackface, I'd look like I was mocking my ancestors...it is...not cool, to put it lightly.
Well considering the amount of people who constantly ask legally blind people things like “Why don’t you just get glasses or have surgery?” Or accused us of faking our vision impairments because we don’t “look blind”, are seen using smartphones etc, His comment never surprised me.
The whole show is disgusting. And what a messege : "Do ANYTHING to be a f.. king model" "This is a rule, this is the only and true way to be a model, if you transform into an empty doll"
I'm for one am GLAD this show was on tv! It shows the dark reality that the modelling business is. No one would reasonably think they would have to endure through this emotional abuse when they sign the contracts. They literally brainwash you into thinking you have to sell your soul in order to be successful because if you don't you are told there's a million other people waiting to take your place.
There is a reason why lately so many contestants have complained about the way they were treated. Back in the day I remember hating Keenyah for how she was portrayed in the show, now, after years watching her cycle, I honestly don't know how she managed to pull it together with the whole criticism about her weight, being sexually harassed, even Shannon from cycles 1/17 stated how she was constantly pressured to be "more sexy", yet they lose it whenever a contestant has had a past as an escort or past work with Playboy, smh. Talk about double standards 🙄
I remember watching one episode where a girl was in cold water too long and got hypothermia, I believe. Well, throughout the whole show, they were saying "You need to suffer if you want to be a model!" "If you don't want to do this shoot, then you must not want to be a model!" so she tried to tough it out until she got sick and then they told her she should have told them and they would have let her get out. That's not what y'all were saying earlier.
I'll never get over the fact that they sent Toccara (the first plus-size model to be on the show) on the SAME casting calls as the other models. They knew she wouldn't get cast and get critiqued for her size; they set her up to fail that week and it was sh!tty
It’s sad because most of these girls put their pride aside and still did the challenges/ photoshoot knowing they wasn’t comfortable.. they STILL ended up getting sent home smh.
@@syria0110 Yea I still don't understand what we are at fault for in the end but I guess that's just more telling of the entire production than the viewership.
She also addressed the whole scene where she yelled “I WAS ROOTING FOR YOU-“ to that contestant. She admitted she was wrong for yelling and if she could take it back she would. So at least she admitted her wrongdoing there.
Remember when there was this girl Dani who said "I don't like gay people, I don't like muslims" on her audition tape and they brought her anyway? The she questioned why there were so many black women auditioning right in front of Furonda - a black woman, and got into an argument with Danielle - also a black woman and the winner.
Right? The crazy, often terrible hair was one thing, but widening a tooth gap is completely different. Hair grows back, dye fades. But widening her tooth gap could cause serious problems farther down the line.
It might seem pointless to analyze these problems after the fact and after we gave the show our, yes I was obsessed with this show for a while, attention, but MsMojo is right, they had a perfect platform to improve the modeling world and they didn't do anything. This is one of the reason why as soon as they announced Tyra as the new host of DWTS I decided not to watch it anymore. I'm not one to immediately "cancel" a celeb, but I'd just rather spend my time doing something else.
The actual modeling industry never wanted anything to do with ANTM. They treated the alumni like amateurs and thought of the show as a joke. ANTM couldn't change the "modeling world" even if they wanted to. Its a reality show. Its like saying that Dancing with the stars can change the dancing industry.
Time has changed (thank God!), I think back then it was so normal to us see this toxic behavior on tv, so we didn't mind and it was actually enterteining. Like you, I used to love ANTM, I was a kid the first time I saw it and wasn't aware about how problematic it was. It's great that now we know better and we can choose not to accept this kind of shows anymore.
Yes, I agree with the whole video. I felt terrible for the girl who had been sexually assaulted being encouraged to kiss a man when it made her so uncomfortable. I understand the format of the show was what models experienced in Tyra’s era of modelling. Tyra had a platform to make change instead of normalise these terrible scenarios. I watched this show so much as a little girl, now I’m grown up I am so disgusted at some parts of the show.
I know my comment is WAY after when you first posted, but you are absolutely right. I always *hated* it when the judges would say it's "just pretending" when any of the girls expressed discomfort with having to kiss some stranger. It's "just pretending" when they are posing as a mythical creature, or one of the seven deadly sins; kissing is a very real act.
I stopped watching after they used those girls to advertise Enrique Iglesias's video.....they made them think they will be used....I guess they were too 'regular' 🙄 And Yaya Dacosta being brushed aside for embracing her Afro culture
I wanted to slap Tyra for shutting down Yaya like that. Not only was it rude but in retrospect she was straight up racist toward her own race. Tyra might call herself an advocate but her show proof that she's nothing but a HYPOCRITE.
I couldn't *stand* Robin on s1 but when she said "My body is mine", she was absolutely right. Being on a tv show wanting to be a model doesn't mean they have a right to YOUR autonomy.
Well sharoun who told that in the confession that isis shouldn't be america's next top model because 'because she's a drag queen' but jokes on her she was the first one eliminated
Banks was abusive and discriminative and thankfully no one is forgetting it but calling it out so these young women can get vindicated. I hope Tyra watches this and understands her wrongs so she can educate herself to be a better person.
This just shows how in the fashion industry models are not humans but things, and it's all a representation on how the world works since many people aspire to be in that industry, times are changing and now we're realizing the lack of self-love and love in general this world has been living in for decades, perhaps it's not about this show or the fashion industry but what they are teaching about ourselves, it's time we remember our self worth.
Instead of saying "Hasn't Aged Well," this video should be labeled "Is Problematic." These issues are still a thing and will probably always happen. Also, this show is still on and not THAT old. It's not just a difference in times. Also, a lot of these ended up being teachable moments for those involved and the audience. I learned about Aspberger's for the first time because of Heather. I learned about transgender identity, sexual discrimination, racial issues, and to not judge a book by its cover. I take these lessons with me all the time and I always think about how I learned them from the show, despite all its flaws and issues. Lots of times, when Tyra talked about her personal experiences as a working model, it broke that facade of glamour and perfection that many people have. Learning stuff like that made me glad I didn't pursue a career in acting and the grass is definitely NOT greener.
ANTM was toxic back in the day, but it was "reality TV" and "the modeling industry is just like that", so everyone ignored the problems. Looking back now just makes the issues even more obvious. With the exception the contestants, I don't think I could support anyone who had a hand in this show. They had a chance to make a positive change in their industry and instead they exploited people for ratings. It's disgusting.
I used to like this series back in the day but it DEFINITELY hasn't aged well. Like it's problematic on so many ways that this video only scratches the surface.
There have been sooooo many toxic things happen in this show but exploiting Kaylas sexual assault trauma was the absolute worst. She was shown zero sensitivity. Disgusting.
@ Chelsey Parker That was so bad! Plus, it seems like barely anyone in the comments find that as horrible as I do. Or they are just focused on other things
I always think it's interesting that they wanted Daniel from season 6 to get rid of her gap but in season 15 they made Chelsey get her gap widened. The show was constantly hypocritical. "You were uncomfortable? well you should have spoken up, because we can see it in your shot" "nobody cares that you are uncomfortable, if you speak up people are going to label you a diva and not want to work with you."
The gap tooth thing bothers me the most because a few seasons later another girl had her gap WIDENED because it was trendy then and now people’s unique physical differences can make you very popular.
Yes it was Cycle 9 and her name was Chelsea. I remember thinking that for Chelsea it's ok but for Danielle it's not marketable. Then u look at Slick Woods a model with a gap said that made her feel insecure.
I don't know if Season 1's Elise is the best example of how badly the show treated people who wanted to pursue higher education. I 100% agree that going to med school is far more practical than a career that usually doesn't last much past 25 or 30! Being a doctor is an incredibly important profession, especially right now. I think people misunderstood how they treated some of the more educated contestants. Elise mocked religious girls, saying that were ignorant for having faith, and described some of the less educated girls as low class trash, so calling her uppity was about more than her educational goals. Frankly, she was a more toxic bully than any of the judges. I think the point they were trying to make was that the show was offering the contestants a chance to get their foot in the fashion door, to use the opportunity to have a career in modeling. That would only work if you were willing to commit a lot of time to it and move to a place where there were more modeling opportunities (like NYC or LA). I never felt like they were shaming people for wanting an education, but rather questioning if giving the opportunity to someone who was only doing it for fun would be a waste.
Elise was good tv, she reminded me of Wynona Ryder but with a bad attitude. I didn't like her but I did like her at the same time. It was funny that she didn't realize the irony of her personal views and being apart of a modeling reality tv competition.
And the saddest part of it all is, that she refuses to be held accountable for her past mistakes. This, at least for me, is proof that she felt entitle to treat girls like that. Some of those girls were underage, nudity was a legal issue aswell.
None of the contestants were underage on that show. Although I disagree with about everything on that show, you can't crucify someone for problematic behavior that took place nearly 15-20 years ago...especially when no crime was committed. People grow and change, people make mistakes of different magnitudes.
@@theTruthSeekerishere sorry but the argument you made does NOT always work. Do you know Tyra personally? If you think she’s changed I want proof from you. You’re argument reminds me of my parents constantly justifying my younger sibling who’s on his early 20s now. “You can’t still be mad at things he did at 4 yrs old. “ umm yes I CAN because he NEVER grew out of certain habits. That “a long time ago” argument only works if ppl DO change. If this show was still going I guarantee Tyra would still do some of the same things. Your “a long time ago” statement can also be used for exploitation. For example, I can do wrong things NOW on purpose and get away with never apologizing for it because it will be history soon right? That’s just irresponsible. Another example. They don’t catch many murder of criminals til years later because you can’t always catch killers within a yr or 2. Even if that person DID change, does that mean they should escape consequences? No. We can forgive others but for the sake of justice, no one should escape consequences. Those killers still go to prison if they’re ever caught. And don’t try to use the”killing is worse so it doesn’t count” thing. There’s only 2 categories: right and wrong. There’s no middle. Plus ironically some of Tyra’s activities DID risk ppls lives anyway.
i feel like, compared to other "...next Topmodel" shows, Americas next topmodel has by far the most disrespectful contestants. its also quite boring aswell lol
@Juan Ardila but so far i knew that girl who won Ausntm doesnt have bright career in modelling and vogue cancel to put her on the spread regarding this issues
@Juan Ardila I remember this and was so so upset. It was the ultimate injustice and slap in the face to the girl who was bullied and from the votimg public ... disgusting.
I remember one episode where they did an underwater shoot and the one girl spoke up and said she had asthma. During judging Tyra said something like “you CLAIM to have asthma” and then went on to say there were many athletes etc who had asthma who had gotten through it 🙄
The clips of these girls having to wear and walk in those outrageously high heels alone had me wincing the whole time. I was so scared I was about to witness some women break their ankles.
Ugh... I hate myself for having once loved this show. I am glad we’re having this conversation about toxic behaviour and the exploitation of young women. So important for all of us women to see what damaging behaviour we are modelling for others.
Top Model is probably the reason the modeling industry is so much more progressive today. It made them look at how toxic they were. Millennials my age made fun of my gapped teeth all my life. Only in the last few years has it become socially embraced.
I don't think it's a problem with the show, it's showing what the whole modelling industry is like and so that is where the real problem was (and likely still is). I'm surprised after the whole Hollywood Weinstein scandal that the modelling industry didn't have a similar reckoning itself.
definitely, but still a problem with the show, too. you can't say all the stuff they were forced/shamed into doing wasn't for ratings or creating challenges that would make for "good tv" at the time. and Tyra's massive ego. they became even more exploitative and did whatever would bring the show back to life. there were some legit contestants and professionals on the show but it wasn't ever fully about modeling. it was a show first and foremost.
I feel like they should have shown that although this is how modeling is they should have still spoken about how it's not okay instead of just telling the models to suck it up even when being sexually harassed. They had a large enough platform to push for change instead they supported toxicity. The show is a problem by supporting the problematic modeling industry.
The hipocresy of the show is way too much. You have Tyra saying beauty comes in all colors, shapes, ages, etc yet the production always make fun of the older, black or full figured models specially during the photoshoots... LIKE COME ON!!!!
Jay confirmed in his chat the Kahlen/Graveyard incident was coincidence. I believe him and it makes sense from a production standpoint. It very likely took weeks to get a permit to shoot in a graveyard + dig a new grave for a photoshoot. No way it was intentional to mess with her.
@@candicehoneycutt4318 He said that was also coincidence because the elaborate costumes had to be made far in advance and were already assigned before she happened to gain weight. But I'm less convinced by this than with the graveyard shoot.
I remember being super young and watching this, yet I was very uncomfortable with how they pressured the contestants. I could tell that it was wrong! I’m sad to have ever supported this show. 😔
Unfortunately, ANTM was the exact reflection of the model industry at that time. It was such an extreme emotional experience to grow up as young woman inside that industry. I'm so happy with the changes in the last years, but I can still see the toxicity in the background.
Thank you for pointing out that the show had the power to bring change to the modeling world, but chose to play into the toxicity. Tyra painting herself as a champion for women intensified that toxicity. That shoot with Keenya and that clip with Yaya still get to me.
Using Robin as an example for the forced nudity doesn't make sense though. In that shoot she exposed her breasts to Jay thinking it was ok since he is gay while Tyra was next to him after claiming to be such a Christian woman. What about the fact Jay didn't ask to be flashed like that? That move of hers made her stance hypocritical.
They should have shown that although this is how modeling is that it is not okay instead of just telling the models to suck it up even when being sexually harassed on national TV. They had a large enough platform to push for change instead they supported toxicity. The show is a problem by perpetuating the existing problems in the modeling industries. Her show normalizing abuse doesn't say anything to you?
@@Hello61Jello Oh no, the show and Banks are still problematic. BUT people gotta remember that getting rid of her/the show doesn't get rid of the underlying issues surrounding the industry. All I'm getting at is if you're gonna go after them for what they've done, you should also be going after the industry as a whole.
@@memorysdancer exactly where I said that? I'm just making a pop culture reference (Mean girls) because WatchMojo has a lot of ANTM videos, never said that it was something good or bad.
I actually remember two girls getting eliminated for losing weight and being too thin. Sara fr Cycle 9 got eliminated because she lost weight as a plus sized model, and Anamaria fr Cycle 15 got eliminated for being too thin and was told to eat a burger. But Cassie and Keenyah were chastised for their weight gain. I never knew this was bad as I was a teen when I started watching ANTM. Now I know how toxic this show is
My friends used to think I was weird for not liking this show, but I was young and didnt know how to put into words exactly how uncomfortable some episodes made me. I just used to say "I just dont like it for some reason". But they used to say I was weird for not liking it and I started questioning myself. This video makes it so clear why I felt icky about this show, I'm glad other people see the issues too
Yeah, I hate it. Also, I never know whether to believe them or not. I always feel it's staged. And the fucking music they put in is very much over the top.
The one that has bothered me the most was one girl can’t have a career it’s a gap in her teeth. Then one girl has her teeth permanently disfigured for her make over. I bet they polished that floor really good before those girls wore those heels. The rape victim having to kiss a male model. So disgusting. Not good tv, disgusting
Okay Kaylen found out her friend died in the evening and the grave yard photo shoot was literally first thing in the morning, they can’t come up with a concept/location/wardrobe like that in just a few hours. Plus they told her she didn’t have to do the shoot
If she didn't do it she would be disqualified. Also yes they can do that. They have a lot of influence and a huge budget. Not only that it's not the first time they did something like that to a contestant. They made another contestant pose as a dead girl after her friend died.
Danielle’s story always bothered me. Not only did they criticize her for her gap, not only did she only sprain a toe. But during that same season Tyra also criticized her accent and kept telling her that she needed to change her accent because she sounded to “country“ 😕😕
@@lizzybethnj617 Ironically, Naomi provides really useful advice that can advance a girl's career. The Face proved that beyond a doubt. Yes, Naomi is harsh and will not take any crap but she listens, provides feedback that is practical and invests in the girls she mentors in ways Tyra does not. Tyra gives some advice about booty position, neck, looking for the light and 'smizing'. It only goes so far, really, and a lot of it is more Tyra being Tyra than useful information you can take aboard in order to become a better model. Naomi, however, worked with each girl and gave them detailed instructions that went a long, long way. She always seemed to view each girl as an individual and wouldn't press them into blackface. Let's be honest, most of the challenged on ANTM were conceived just to mock the girls and make sure they failed, hard. A few were very interesting but for the most part, they were only tangentially connected to modelling as it was.
What's even worst is that a black woman (Tyra Banks) actually pushed for the models to wear black/brownface. When it was used to mock black people in the past.
The way they treated Mariah Watchman in cycle 18 as the first Native contestant was terrible. They made her dress as Pocahontas and said it should be "easy" for her.
I felt Elyse’s critique so much. My supervisor called me out at work in a similar fashion and speaking approach Tyra had, about the precautions I was doing to make myself safer for the pandemic and it felt hurtful and demeaning. Elyse was such interesting person, I’m glad she found some success post-show, despite the hardships.
If fell an afinity to Heather as I am on the Autism spectrum too and that is how I am treated. People feel that they are able to treat you like that because you don't have a visible disability. If they had called the other girls out it would have sent a message to others saying that no - it is not OK to treat people like that because they are a bit strange.
I was so mad at this show when they gave Amanda a hard time for performing when she was freaking out about not being able to see the runway but “then how was she able to do it? I thought she couldn’t see!” Was that not her finding a way to deal? And Ms.Jay taking her walking stick and being like “don’t ever bring this again.” This show was soo ableist.
Tyra chastised one girl for leaving the gap in her teeth, yet literally had a dentist damage another girl's teeth to create a gap! Make up your mind.
Yes! I am glad the contestant did not get her gap 'fixed', it was the right call...and feel sad for the other one who let a dentist widen her gap.
I totally remember that!!!!!😳😳
@@Nocturnalux she actually did get it fixed. They compromised and had the gap significantly smaller reduced but still noticable instead of closing it completely.
Girl: "im uncomfortable, the guy is touching me, my friend died, im anxious, i was molested and i'm traumatized, im afraid of heights, etc"
Tyra: "When i was 16 i was in Paris and i went through the exact same thing and i had control over that bc that's what models do, so that's no excuse.
One of the reasons why I always hated the show.
Jajajajajajajaja sooo true
I’m sorry but this is a fucking business. If a client hires you for a specific shot and you can’t do it you’re out! What she went through is tragic but girl. This is a modeling competition.
Growing up, I didn't realize how toxic this show was. Now that I am older, I wish I never supported it.
same - I used to totally love this show and just slowly grew out of it. i haven't watched it in more than 10 years. Now i am horrified at the stuff that I accepted as 'entertainment' - they were horrible to those women. This could have been a great platform to push for change and instead they just reinforced a lot of the terrible things that are done to women in the industry.

Y'all failed to mention Tyra's nudity bias, she's never posed nude herself.
Huh?
Ty Johnson Tyra and Judges would eliminate girls if they didn’t pose nude, while Tyra herself never posed nude.
She’s deflee poses nude or ‘stimulated nude’
That used to piss me off

This is abuse. Forcing these girls to do something they are not comfortable with. Sexual harassment and abuse. Never let someone force you to pose naked. What happens to these photos ? Who has them? This show should be canceled
And producers and hosts should get arrested.
It's like this in the industry, unfortunately. Just not many come out about it.
Abuse when they actually signed up the contract or waver to do nude all u see is drama its a reality tv show they come there with a consequences they were not" forced" its a part of their contract as a contestant.

Candice Honeycutt to be fair they did not have to sign the contract, nobody forced them to sign or even audition for the show 🤷🏾♂️.
Model: My friend just died
Tyra: lets go to the graveyard
Damn...
She should've been excused
Just for the record straight. Before a new season begin they already planned every weeks photoshoot so it was coincident that kahlens friend died exactly the day when they about to shoot that 7 deadly sin. She literally told you but you didn’t listen. And the contestant who cheated on her boyfriend and then they recorded and aired both her and her boyfriend’s side of the conversation while she was sobbing on the ground trying to hide from the cameras?
That was Carrie D., I think.
I remember that one. They tried to blame her.
And she ended up being in the bottom that episode..Caridee
Yes that was CariDee. She ended up winning. They made such a big deal too when she asked Nigel if he pulled the stick out of his ass since the last judging. They made it such a dramatic thing but Nigel even later admitted that they played that up in editing and he actually made a joke back to her after she said that to him.
Watch Caridee's chat with Oliver Twixt..not only is it really funny and entertaining but Caridee read the letter she wrote to Nigel in it's entirety
They did Isis so wrong. Even back then I knew they were being disrespectful. Producers included simply because they kept all of that disgusting footage in
As disgusting as they treated Isis it really humanized transgender people for me so much. Like I was so disgusted but it was the first time I'd ever seen how harmful anti trans language and behavior was to the recipient and definitely made me take a hard look at some of the humor of the time
I just had the same thought I was young so I didn’t fully understand but I did understand that they were treating her wrong
Well would
You have liked it if they didn’t include footage like that? I thought it was informative to hear that there r people that have those thoughts and made it very clear how ignorant some people could be.
I guess public know who the real villain is.

taurnguard Yeah, that’s also what I’m saying. For some people, it can be super easy to get caught up in the drama of it all and forget that these are real people and real lives.
I think Winnie Harlow being called a “panda bear“ should be on this list.
She was called by yu tsai not tyra
COMPLETELY AGREE!
That kind of remark is completely derogatory

The show didn’t aged well
“Over come your blindness”
Gee what a fantastic idea! Thanks for bringing that up because I would have never thought of that...

She was also stalked and abused they didn't even help her
Just wow
I remember watching one episode where a girl was in cold water too long and got hypothermia, I believe. Well, throughout the whole show, they were saying "You need to suffer if you want to be a model!" "If you don't want to do this shoot, then you must not want to be a model!" so she tried to tough it out until she got sick and then they told her she should have told them and they would have let her get out. That's not what y'all were saying earlier.
Caridee...it was ridiculous
I'll never get over the fact that they sent Toccara (the first plus-size model to be on the show) on the SAME casting calls as the other models. They knew she wouldn't get cast and get critiqued for her size; they set her up to fail that week and it was sh!tty
It’s sad because most of these girls put their pride aside and still did the challenges/ photoshoot knowing they wasn’t comfortable.. they STILL ended up getting sent home smh.

You are spot on. I was just thinking the same thing.

Right? The crazy, often terrible hair was one thing, but widening a tooth gap is completely different. Hair grows back, dye fades. But widening her tooth gap could cause serious problems farther down the line.
Erm... things change over time, including fashion. On Danielles season it wasn’t popular... YEARS LATER it was. Jussayin.
I was about to say that but thank you. Like now a Gap tooth is maketable

I stopped watching after they used those girls to advertise Enrique Iglesias's video.....they made them think they will be used....I guess they were too 'regular' 🙄
And Yaya Dacosta being brushed aside for embracing her Afro culture
I wanted to slap Tyra for shutting down Yaya like that. Not only was it rude but in retrospect she was straight up racist toward her own race.

That was super messed up having them think they'd get to be in a music video just to replace them in the end

Exactly, but in some places it was clearly overexaggerated for views
"You were uncomfortable? well you should have spoken up, because we can see it in your shot"
"nobody cares that you are uncomfortable, if you speak up people are going to label you a diva and not want to work with you."
Honestly! It was so strange. The show is so damn hypocritical.
@@lizzybethnj617 it's cycle 15 and her name was Chelsey, but yeah I agree with you.
Trends change. For example, being too obese and unhealthy is now praised. 🤷🏻♂️
Agreed. I liked Elise (she made good TV) but she was very condescending to the other contestants
Whoever reads my comment hope your parents live long to see you succeed!
Awwh! Thanks, same to you if you’re in a similar situation as me. 🥺😘😘😊
Awwww shucks thanks my dear!🥰
Mine are both gone....so...
i feel like, compared to other "...next Topmodel" shows, Americas next topmodel has by far the most disrespectful contestants. its also quite boring aswell lol
That’s why I quit watching America’s next top model
@Juan Ardila but so far i knew that girl who won Ausntm doesnt have bright career in modelling and vogue cancel to put her on the spread regarding this issues
@Juan Ardila I remember this and was so so upset. It was the ultimate injustice and slap in the face to the girl who was bullied and from the votimg public ... disgusting.
@@chansin5115 at least there is some justice
@X it wasn't boring for the first 50 years. The second 50 years, been there, done that, got a T-shirt. 😆
I honestly want to see the judges panel work those heels too imo. 😶
Ugh... I hate myself for having once loved this show. I am glad we’re having this conversation about toxic behaviour and the exploitation of young women. So important for all of us women to see what damaging behaviour we are modelling for others.
@6:35 Ginger actually ended up becoming more successful as a model than pretty much most winners. Her name is Ginger Wells.
I agree. Hollywood, the modeling industry, is FINALLY getting exposed for the devils they are. 😏
definitely, but still a problem with the show, too. you can't say all the stuff they were forced/shamed into doing wasn't for ratings or creating challenges that would make for "good tv" at the time. and Tyra's massive ego. they became even more exploitative and did whatever would bring the show back to life. there were some legit contestants and professionals on the show but it wasn't ever fully about modeling. it was a show first and foremost.
I feel like they should have shown that although this is how modeling is they should have still spoken about how it's not okay instead of just telling the models to suck it up even when being sexually harassed. They had a large enough platform to push for change instead they supported toxicity. The show is a problem by supporting the problematic modeling industry.
I WAS ROOTING FOR YOU WE WERE ALL ROOTING FOR YOU
The hipocresy of the show is way too much.
They plan these shoots well in advance, although I have to wonder about them making Keenyah the elephant
@@candicehoneycutt4318 He said that was also coincidence because the elaborate costumes had to be made far in advance and were already assigned before she happened to gain weight. But I'm less convinced by this than with the graveyard shoot.
@@pb.j.1753 the thing is there to many instances for it to be always coincidence
And how about Jael having to pose as dead, right after her friend died?
They could have changed the shoot
Nataleafrost yup! Shannon didn’t take the nude photo and made it top 2 and came back for all stars
Says more about the problems with the modeling industry than the show itself if anything.
@@Hello61Jello Like don't get me wrong, I agree with you 100%. People just need to keep in mind that it's not JUST her and her show at fault.
Why am I pissed off now that any of this was allowed. They were really racist, Trans phobic, bigoted, sexist ect......
- MsMojo: makes another ANTM top ten.
- ANTM: "Why are you so obsess with me?"
The show they're always talking about is RuPaul's Drag Race
@@Wafflehouse-k5u nah, they're talking about the show because it gets them a lot of views. 🤷🏽♀️
Are you saying its not problematic?
Now I know how toxic this show is
Love this vid
My friends used to think I was weird for not liking this show, but I was young and didnt know how to put into words exactly how uncomfortable some episodes made me. I just used to say "I just dont like it for some reason". But they used to say I was weird for not liking it and I started questioning myself. This video makes it so clear why I felt icky about this show, I'm glad other people see the issues too
I still say "I was rooting for you we were all rooting for you." to this day
Same lol
"Everybody loves a good sob story" No, Americans love a good sob story thats honestly American TV 🙄
We will never get another cycle after these months of the show being dragged. RIP Top Model
good
Also, the previous contestants have opened up about their experience on the show and they even exposed Tyra. No way, she can make a comeback.
Adrienne, the winner of the Cycle 1 NEVER got any of the prizes they promised. So messed up!!!
“Your not ready to cut your hair?”
“No”
“Get off my set..”
Tyra: Danielle, why you didn't do it?
Also Tyra: Chelsey, open it more!
Could you possibly do top 10 reasons why dance moms hasn’t aged well?
Danielle’s story always bothered me. Not only did they criticize her for her gap, not only did she only sprain a toe. But during that same season Tyra also criticized her accent and kept telling her that she needed to change her accent because she sounded to “country“ 😕😕
all that and she still won
@@ghostflxwer very true! It just sucks the bs she had to endure 😣
And then runner up of Season 13, Laura is a Southern girl and nobody even critize her Southern accent.
”I’ll stomp that man”
*has a man’s name*
Lol, yes. Clark for a...girl? That's interesting.
Tyra accused Naomi of being a bully through out the years- now the word “bully” describes Tyra actions towards women and especially women of color....
I always preferred Naomi Campbell over Tyra. Naomi was 100 percent real. Naomi never implied that she was a sweetheart.
@@lizzybethnj617 Naomi is a great tutor, I'll give her the credit, but we shouldn't forget how she mistreated her servants.
"My body is mine" 5:57.
contestant: i dont feel comfortable
judges: feel comfortable then
EBONY Ended up in BEYONCÉ’s freakum dress video. What a great accomplishment!!!! 🥰
Blackface is never ok
What's even worst is that a black woman (Tyra Banks) actually pushed for the models to wear black/brownface. When it was used to mock black people in the past.
@Joan of Arc I dare you to walk down a black neighborhood dressed as blackface. See what happens
That's 100% unacceptable, but I would like to point out that Noelle even said she was part black in that same episode.
I mean, I enjoyed Tropic Thunder.
