    The Trio (Scott, Kirsten, Mitch) were all theater kids and Avi was studying opera, so also theater experience. I know Kevin performed musically (Carnegie Hall), but don't know if he did any acting. The point is, they were trained in how to command a stage and tell a story with their bodies, faces, and voices. I'm sure it set them apart from the start. And even though PTX was put together for this competition by Scott, and they had never performed together before, their immense talent just elevates them. Plus I think there was magic dust involved because the fact that PTX exists at all is kind of miraculous.
    Edit: The First Mitch Slap is coming up, won't say which performance, but you will know it when you hear it. :)

    The most amazing thing about the Avi/Kevin combo to me is that they had never performed together before they got on this show. It just blows my mind how in sync they were with each other. Truly an act of God these 5 people came together. Youll have to wait a long time for a real hard Mitch Slap but its come.

      Avi and Kevin both met the trio the day before the audition for _The Sing-Off._ The audition song was "Telephone," which The Trio already had down pat; I assume they'd sent video of themselves performing it to the other two since that would have been a way to help them get up to speed quickly, but I don't believe they've ever said. However, Mitch had to miss his high school graduation ceremony to attend the audition, which puts the audition in the spring, and the season didn't begin until autumn. So even though Kevin and Avi hadn't "performed" together before (except for the audition), they HAD spent the summer rehearsing together.

    The 12th performance is when they released the Mitch atomic bomb, which probably cinched the win. They were very innovative compared to other groups. You can watch some of the other groups performances to compare. The Dartmouth Aires came in second in case you want see the second best group. You might think the judges were like this with all the other groups, but the had much more “constructive” criticism of the other groups performances. PTX mainly got praise.

    This is their roughest one in my book (other than the finale technical mess one....) but it has some cool traces of what they will become and some tricks they will refine in the future. It's also always good for a giggle with Scott and Mitch mooning over Kirstie like that, haha!
    I like Ben as a judge. He's not critical for the sake of being critical. He's an educator and you can tell that he enjoyed Pentatonix from the start because he gave very specific critiques to them. With much rougher groups he gave tips that were on their level. "Try to center in the key" for example. While Pentatonix got stuff like "A half beat more in the bridge would build suspense". He only nitpicked for groups like Penatonix, Afro-beats (who were a jazz-based group and way above all the other groups in sheer music theory knowledge) etc. Pentatonix loved him because he gave them actual tips on what to work on.

    I’m so glad you are doing these. It’s so fun to look back. They are pretty good here but stick with it. They grow so fast and by the 5 th week they start to soar and then 7-12 is insane. Scott and Kirsty had both had one year of college but
    Mitch was very shy and missing his high school graduation He really hadn’t been away from home before this. He struggles with stage fright. Also the show wanted him to sing in a ( Mitch calls it masc). Masculine way. Don’t worry with intense support from all of them
    Mitch finds himself in this series. They all do. When they win Kirsty is crying in an interview and says she’s so happy that the world will hear Mitch’s voice now 😂😂.

    Mitch does get a small moment to shine on the 12th performance a 'mini-mitch slap', he definitely doesn't go as high as we all know he can even in that performance. The producers of the show kind of stifled him and wanted him to be more 'masc' - he refers to this time as 'masc-mitch' because the producers didn't want to put any spotlight on him or his sexuality. In fact later on they do a charity thing with the Trevor Project and the producers totally gloss over the fact that it is a program that helps LGBTQIA+ youth with suicidal thoughts.

  • @ruth2141
    @ruth2141 Год назад +4

    Not sure it's clear, but for each performance there is an assigned category that the song must fit into (here it's "Radio Hits"; Scott calls it "Current Hit"). Song choices are also probably limited by the show being able to get permission from the original artist / label. The good thing is that the more established groups can't just come in and perform their best songs. But that means that every week for 11 weeks each group must arrange one or two songs, memorize them and learn choreography. Also, every episode starts with a group number performed by members of all the groups performing in that episode. So that's another arrangement to learn, and complicated group choreography. You'll see how exhausting that gets as the show goes on.

    • @hernameispekka_Rebecca
      @hernameispekka_Rebecca Год назад +1

      Yep to all of this. They did say they had songs picked and arranged that didn't go through either with labels or what the producers wanted. And the group number rehearsals were at like midnight and stuff like that....

    @555Vibes , Avi was performing his overtone singing throughout _The Sing-Off,_ though the judges never seemed to pick up on it. Any time you hear some kind of strange buzzing sound in the bass notes, that's Avi's overtone singing.
    Another song where he used it is "Aha!," and he's given several demonstrations; here's one, beginning at 3:14 ruclips.net/video/3gnSTPT-2GQ/видео.html
    Here's Avi explaining how to do it: ruclips.net/video/fEEAfNij_JU/видео.html and this is an interview where the trio and Kevin demonstrate that they also know how to do it: ruclips.net/video/FKm5zNC-maE/видео.html (the question about overtone singing begins at 17:11, but the whole interview is worth watching). And since Avi's explanation wasn't quite enough for me to understand how to do it, here's a tutorial I found: ruclips.net/video/w42DQoZ-z_c/видео.html

      @@555Vibes You're welcome. The really unexpected thing is that Avi is correct when he says it isn't that hard. There's nothing special about my voice, but learning overtone singing is well within the realm of possibility for me - all it will take is a bit of practice.

I watched this season as it aired real time, and no one else stood a chance. And yes, we were speechless and stunned! 😂 But…if they weren’t in this season, AfroBlu or Dartmouth Aires would have definitely won…and they were both amazing. Never was a Kesha fan myself, but appreciate what PTX did with her music. I think it was criminal how the show limited their performances, but they still blew everyone else away! They took all the judges comments for what they were - praise and constructive criticism - and applied it to every decision and performance. They all (even Mitch) get their chance to shine. Avi's overtone singing is the only talent never acknowledged by the judges. This (and one more) are my two least favorites of all. They just keep getting better every episode. They come so far, so fast, they leave everybody spinning in their dust!

  • @ruth2141

    The "second" performance he's talking about will be Pentatonix's 3rd performance in the video lists. In the video lists the judged performances are numbered 1-12, but that does not match the episode numbers. The scheduling is complex; groups don't do every show at the beginning and in some shows the groups sing once and sometimes twice. SO, this is their 2nd performance but is from the 4th episode, where each group sang twice. Get it? Good ! FYI -- if you really want to get the details, there's a Wikipedia page, "The Sing-Off (season 3)".

      Scott was also out since he was 17 and decided to be full on out when he moved to LA for university. But being on the show and in the band kind of made him back in again, at least publicly. He was still out to the people around him but vague enough for many years that people were left to speculate. He has talked about how he was scared it would hinder their chances. Since he's more "passable" than Mitch (well, he was back then. Not so much now unless it's maybe a photo haha). I also think the level of confidence had a part in Mitch being in the background, not only the terrible choices of the production.
