Kevin had just graduated Yale and was accepted to their Medical School when Scott called him after seeing him cello boxing . He is fluent in several languages including Mandarin. He had planned on being a medical missionary. Prior to PTX, he played Carnegie Hall twice. Once on the sax and once with the cello. He came in second in a Yo Yo Ma cello competition. He never knew he could sing until Avi and Mitch started giving him lessons. He is incredible. Loved watching you light up at his sheer skill and talent.
"Loved watching you light up." I came here to the comments to write everything you wrote, Marie Bellamy. And what a great reaction! So wonderful to watch an obviously knowledgeable reactor discovering how indescribably miraculous Mr. Kevin Olusola is.
Hi Marie, I’m intrigued by your comment. Where did you get the info that Avi and Mitch giving him singing lessons? I like to read all I can about them. Please give me the link. Thank you.
@@mulan2217 I don’t have a link. I know I watched Kevin talk about he didn’t even know he could sing when he joined PTX and that Avi and Mitch helped his voice develop. He and Avi were roommates.

It's an electric cello so he can change the tone from "normal" cello to actually electric, but it's still definitely a cello. He's doing things it would be harder to do on a guitar.
He and Avi were roomies on the road and at an apartment in LA. Kevin had never done anything with his voice so Avi became his vocal instructor. Avi was just days from joining an opera house in LA when Scott Hoying found him.
Smart move. If Pentatonix worked out, he was in, and it was a once-in-a-lifetime shot at a musical career. If not, starting med school one year late was not big deal.
What's even more amazing is that this was all done in a one take. Lol. Sure, he may have had to start over, though I'm certain the number of times he had to start over were limited, but it's all one continuous shot. You see everything he's putting into the performance. This man is a real treasure, for sure. Love your reaction, couldn't wait to see your face when Kevin started the cello part of the song, and you didn't disappoint. Great video.
Been waiting for you to react to this one! I think we all knew you'd be blown away! Also please react to Kevin's own creation, "Renegade" - to round out an excellent view of his talent! Great reaction!!
It's SO HARD to shred the cello like that because the instrument is FRETLESS. He has to maintain perfect pitch as he shreds his solos. He's incredible.
Yes!!! The reaction I’ve been waiting for!!! Watching your face throughout this whole video was priceless lol I really hoped that you would love this as much as we all do, Kevin is just insanely talented, it’s honestly mind blowing 😍 would love to see you react to his cover of ‘Sign of the Times’ I wasn’t much of a fan of the original but I absolutely love KO’s version. I’ve also been desperately hoping that you would react to PTX’s new song ‘Coffee in Bed’ it’s such a great song but Kevin is on another level in it. Thank you for another awesome reaction 😁

There are a lot of people doing reactions today. You are one of the 2 or 3 best, because your reactions help educate me, as someone who knows nothing about music. Thank you.
I was absolutely blown away the first time I watched Kevin’s video of “Down”! I knew he was an amazing beatboxer and cellist, but I never really heard him sing much with PTX. I love his voice! His tone is like butter! His diction is top notch! Everything about this video is mind blowing! I really loved your reaction! It’s so cool to see people who are musicians, vocalists, or vocal trainers react to this type of talent!
I love when guitar players watch this video. Their faces are just so amazed that he is making that sound with a freaking cello! And he looks so natural in that studio. The smirk as the screen went black is the most adorable part. He just crushed it and he knew it! Great reaction!
I have to say as a string player myself, one thing Kevin always impresses me with (no one else probably sees it) this man's double bowing technique is flawless. It is bowing two strings at the same time to make multiple notes. It is f'n difficult and take tons of practice. He does it flawlessly. Much love and keep on keepin on J.
I read a comment one time that said he makes overachievers look like slackers. Can't disagree. I mean this fairly seriously, if he takes up painting or sculpting he could be this millennium's DaVinci.
I’m not musical I like what I like and I love this! Totally in awe of Kevin’s talent. The reaction was sooo good, the look of joy, enhanced the experience
Hi Janelle! This was super fun to watch you watch! I also loved your comment about how you resonate with Kevin's hand movements as a guitar player. The dancer in me feels the same about how he moves his body while plays! Much love to you!
So great to watch you being blown away by Kevin. He is truly a master musician, and deserves your intelligent commentary. Happy to see you covering the PTX five again.
Okay. This Kevin background is out of a couple of newspaper articles. Avi and Kevin became roommates when Pentatonix first formed. They formed the rythmn portion of Pentatonix and worked alot on that Avi got to the point according Kevin that he could tell when he needed to take over so Kevin could take a breath, but Avi also taught him to sing. Avi had majored in 2 areas in college before he got into Pentatonix, as an opera singer and a choral director. You can hear him (Avi) do similar placement and breathing techniques in Change On the Rise. The 2 of them are totally unreal as both musicians and composers. Kevin Olusola, Pentatonix’s beatboxer, is a Yale graduate (pre-med). He speaks fluent Mandarin Chinese, loves classical music, and plays piano, cello, and saxophone. He had performed at Carnegie Hall twice as soloist on the cello and saxophone and has appeared on NPR’s “From The Top.” In 2009, he won second place in an international cello competition hosted by Yo-Yo Ma. In 2011, his “Julie-O” RUclips video was featured by CBS, AOL, Huffington Post and the Washington Post, among others. He was named one of 100 “History Makers in the Making” by TheGrio and was chosen by Quincy Jones to represent him in concert at the 2012 Montreux Jazz Festival alongside Bobby McFerrin and Chick Corea.
I have missed your ptx reactions. So glad you did this one Kevin is unbelievable. Would really live to are more ptx from you. I really enjoy your breakdown of the music and their new original album is great, especially the ones they haven't made videos for yet.
