Glad to see you’re getting back into it! I had a glute strain that I didn’t realise I had because every time I would warm up and never feel it after the warm up until i realised during one session of 200 repeats that I was really quite badly injured. Then due to school pressure to participate and the poor management of warm ups in schools as a general thing, it took almost 2 months for me to recover. Can’t wait to leave school in a few months and not have this issue if I get injured in the future. Getting back into it really well currently though, using all your tips to progress training really helps. Finally going back to the track for the first time on Monday even though I probably won’t be able to keep up but fingers crossed.🤞
I just injured my calf on Monday, shame I couldn't watch this video then as I did an easy run on Wednesday and it's now feeling worse! I'm going to the gym tonight so I'll try the elliptical trainer. Thanks for the advice! Hope you can get back to running properly now.
Nice one, Ben! Great tips too. I took 6 weeks off following a calf strain. I basically spent a lot of time in the gym building up lower (and upper) body strength before getting back out there again. I lost a lot of fitness but regained it and more soon after a bit of patience. I felt the niggle in the calf for a while after yet seemed to disappear after warming up in a run. Now I stretch them properly after each run and it has even helped rid of a long-term plantar fascitis issue.
Great video as always Ben. Wish you a speedy recovery. Funny story, this is how I discovered and felt in love with triathlon. A year or so ago I was (run) injured and did some swimming and cycling as cross training. Felt in love with the sports. Now my run mileage is way lower then before but I am a lot fitter, like you mentioned, I do all my easy aerobic sessions on the bike or swim, plus a few key sessions for those sports. My running sessions are basically a track workout every Tuesday, a brick (bike+run) session on Friday and a long run on Sunday. I don’t think you have felt in love with the elliptical but that was very relatable. Cheers Ben
Shame about the injury, hope you're fully healed up soon. Currently nursing shin splints in my left knee, as did a fair bit of hill running in Wales over the holidays, and I think the downhills took their toll. Glad I saw this video, as it's made me realise the elliptical trainer could be a viable alternative in the meantime, as I cannot really afford to fully take time off cause I'll be running the Manchester Marathon in 12 weeks. Thanks for the inspiration Ben.
Glad to see that you have patience as one of your steps. Pushing it too much in the beginning can make things even worse and I'm happy you've identified that. Well done on your Essex placement!
Congrats on getting into the Essex team! that's incredible. You deserve a good rest. Hope you feel better both physically and mentally/emotionally mate!
Good to see the injury has healed. Sounds like you caught it just in time and did the sensible thing. We often try to just push through injuries and often end up worse off.
thanks ben, just did an easy 3k after a couple weeks off from shin splints. Used cycling to keep the aerobic progress and now to ease myself back into impact sports. Congrats on the Essex call-up!!
Awesome video! Picked up a niggle a few months ago and tried to push through it. It obviously got worse and I’m still recovering atm! Wish I had this video to watch back then! Been loving the content lately, thank you! 🙌💪
Hey, I got the exact same injury from my race last Saturday. I was fine until about 5 miles in (10.5 mile race). It only seemed to hurt when I was going uphill. I still went on to finish and luckily won the race but been on rest ever since. I wish I’d seen this blog before and I would’ve done the elliptical machine and see if I could’ve done that also. Definitely affects your mental health when you can’t do something you love and it gets you away from daily life and stresses. Glad you seem better buddy.
had pain in a simmilar area and radiul into the inside of the gastroc muscle and that turned into a 6 week recovery put me out of my own county champs and has put pay to my county team qualification for sussex. Gotta say easing back into training now has improved my mental state ten fold , one of those you only miss it once its gone :D
I’m sorry to hear about the calf but happy you’re well in the mend! I really like this type of content. I’d be happy to hear more in this topic, as this always feel like the largest risk to my programming.
Just got back from some nagging Achilles tendinitis from new shoes so this hit close to home! Glad you’re feeling better Ben! No better feeling then getting back on the grind 😁
Had a little pain in the shins for few weeks, maybe because of working in construction and doing the running part little too hard, but definitely gonna use your tips in the future. Glad you're better and keep up with the great work 👊
I’m feeling with you, Ben. I have had a really solid 2021 in terms of staying injury free, which have let me to aim for Berlin Half Marathon in April. However, I’m suffering from runner’s knee. It is a major set-back mentally and physically. Keep pushing, champ. Running is a injury prone sport unfortunately. Seeing you motivated for cross training is helping me do the same as well. Cheers mate!
Hi Ben, I'm in the exact same boat! Just been selected for Staffordshire for the inter county XC. However have also sprained my soleus calf and will probably be out of action for atleast a week. Hopefully can say hi at the inter counties!
Great video Ben. I've been in a similar position this week not being able to run as much as I'd like but due to back problems. Just about got into a position to be able to race my first club championship race tomorrow.
Hi Ben, I've been following your RUclips journey since the beginning and would like to thank you for all of the great content you provide. I do have a question regarding recovery, I have seen that you use CBD from Pure Sport. Do you find it helps aid general muscle soreness after exercise?
Last year I had a massive calf strain that took about six months to recover from. Now I have some weird ankle injury that started during my warm ups sessions.
Unfortunately it’s just one of those lessons we all need to learn for ourselves. No matter how many times it’s said it only makes sense after experience! Hope you recovery is going well :)
Thanks for sharing the recovery tips, I'm also suffering with my Achilles Tendon at the moment, it does suck not being able to run at the moment and definitely has an affect on your mental health. But as you've said I don't want to rush it and then get pushed right back to the beginning again

Sorry to hear that Finn! Glad you’re on the mend and good luck with that first session back. Don’t go too mad :)
Really good point about accepting the injury, I think sometimes it's easier to just try and keep running in the hopes it will sort itself out.
keep going lad, tough to have to have a break but I know you'll come back even stronger, best wishes
Thanks James! Hopefully won’t be too long

Seems like a lot of people are getting a few niggles! I think the cold weather doesn’t help :)

Well said, I did suffer a knee injury, it was really frustrating, as a runner we must always listen to our body

Thank you Hannah! Can’t wait to compete for the county
Really good advice that I would guess most runners have failed to take at some time and regretted it!

Right on time Ben! I have the same problem, hopefully I will recover as soon as possible

Tore part of my right adductor doing sprint reps on 23rd Dec. This is the video I need right now after 3 weeks off 😭
Sorry to hear that! Hope you have a speedy recovery

A great insight to injuries as a runner. Its not always hunky dory! Keep it up mate!
Cheers bud! Hopefully I’ll be able to resume full training soon :)
Very helpful tips Ben -Thanks!
I’m sorry to hear about the calf but happy you’re well in the mend!

I've had shin splints since November and I'm feeling your pain, hope you recover quickly

You know the drill mate. Take it easy and things will be good, you'll be back before you know it 👍
Congratulations on the selection and glad that your calf is feeling better. I'll see you in Loughborough 😁
Go Ben you got this mate 💪🏽
Appreciate it josh :)
Running is king cross training is good but I just don’t get that same rush glad to hear your calf is nearly healed :)
Agreed cross training is nowhere near as fun but am grateful for it nonetheless
Really enjoyed the video made me sit back and think about when you have that niggle sit back think take it easy.
P.s love all the videos
Keep your head up Ben! Hopefully you get better soon :)
Thank you buddy! I will :)
Just rewatched this after getting injured. Hey Ben where can I listen to that Phil Sesemann episode?
Fingers crossed you're ready to go again mate. Take it easy though. Step 4 is always the hardest. 👍🏻🏃♂️

Love you keep the cheatsheet on your phone ! Smart move
Is the Elliptical the best alternate machine you think?
Last year I had a massive calf strain that took about six months to recover from. Now I have some weird ankle injury that started during my warm ups sessions.
I always wondered how the hell you race so much and don’t get injured :D.
You ever do any swimming Ben?
I got runners knee just before Christmas decided I could run through it now iv made things worse 😅 live and learn! 😂
Unfortunately it’s just one of those lessons we all need to learn for ourselves. No matter how many times it’s said it only makes sense after experience! Hope you recovery is going well :)
@@BenIsRunning yes you’re right I’m just learning that now! Thankyou mate, congratulations on being selected for the Essex team 😄
Thanks for sharing your 5 step process. However you missed out the 4 preceeding stages - denial, anger, bargaining, depression. 🙄
Thanks for sharing the recovery tips, I'm also suffering with my Achilles Tendon at the moment, it does suck not being able to run at the moment and definitely has an affect on your mental health. But as you've said I don't want to rush it and then get pushed right back to the beginning again
That black avocado is giving me nightmares
It wasn’t too bad 😂
Nearly switched off after that haha
