    You Sir are 100% right about turning easy! My neighbor has a big Kobota diesel Z mower, just last week he was complaining about it tearing up where he turns. He's talking about trading in the Z mower and going back to a tractor. I was trying to tell him about doing a 3 point turn, but he want listen.

    Hey Pete, I can't thank you enough for all your videos. In the past six months, I have taken my elderly mom's lawn from 50 percent weeds, to the start of a really great looking lawn. Nothing other than mowing had been done to it since my dad passed away 12 years ago so...bad news. I sprayed the hell out of the weeds all summer and killed out all the bad stuff. Quit spraying 8 weeks ago...Got some really good quality professional seed here in Greenville SC, watered daily, applied starter fertilizer, and got a schedule going year round. Milorganite...got a great local service to cut the new grass weekly with good equipment and sharp blades. She can't really afford a total lawn service, but I learned so much and got her lawn looking great now. Thank you!

    Thanks Pete for the very informative videos. I walk my dog around the neighborhood every morning and observe everyone's lawn and find very few that look acceptable. What is obvious is the worst looking lawns are the lawns that are mowed the shortest.

    Great video as usual, Pete! I aerated and over seeded this past Tuesday and have been watering as per your guidelines (I just installed a sprinkler system last month). I also spent the extra money and purchased a weed-free, high quality seed from a farm/landscape store instead of the name brand seed we all know. I did, however, purchase Scott's "starter fertilizer," so hopefully that will work. Maybe next year I can get my hands on some GCI seed and fert!

    Thanks for the info, I like to mulch my clippings back onto the lawn. I though still question when I should mow. I have had to put down new seed in overseeding bc of high wind weather and improper applying. I have watered it a lot and am in a most shade area. But I would say about 50% of it is less than 3 inches tall. The other 50% is around 5-7 inches tall. What should I do, do a half mow, leave it all till the new seedlings are at 4-4.5 inches tall? Will leaving it cause problems for growth of established and new seedlings? Any help would be helpful

    Pete, I know tour not suppose to cut the grass with the grass blades wet but my question for you is this, people like you with lawn care companies that have many hundreds of yards to mow do you follow this same advice with your company or do you mow your clients yards occasionally with it wet or with dew on it? Reason I ask is lots of weeks there's just not that much completely dry grass with all of the rain we get and if you didnt mow their grass slightly wet occasionally, you may possibly not get all of those customers yards mowed..?The lawn companies around me start at daylight and work till dark usually and the dew isn't even burned off the grass till around 11:00.Great video's Pete!

    Great video, I do have a question if you're seeding in the fall do you cut your grass just a little bit lower because when you add the fertilizer would that spike the growth of the old grass as well as the new grass so you're getting less sun on the new grass because the old grass is outgrowing it? Thanks

    I have a question in regards to cutting for the first time. I over seeded from dirt on 9/19/2021 and started having growth overnight on 9/23 to 9/24. On 9/25, the grass when crazy and just started taking off. Grass height is between 3.75 - 5.00 (Had a serous down pour 2 days after over seeding. the heavy rain moved the peat moss and seed. So I put down more seed and covered it with peat moss. The seed that ran off of course it grew and what I put down started germinating shortly afterwards - explains 3.75 - 5.00).
    Is it ok to cut my grass now and should I mulch it or bag it or side discharge? -- It is Tall Fescue

    Awesome video Pete. Question : I have a Honda HRX 217 mower which gives you 2 options when it comes to mulching. You can either mulch clippings under the deck or discharge them through the back (weird I know) Which one do you recommend?

    • @RobertTorres27
      @RobertTorres27 7 лет назад +2

      In my experience, if you're mulching, don't side/rear discharge, keep them under the deck. The reason being is the longer you can keep the clippings circling under the deck, the better. This is especially true with Honda mowers and their twin micro-cut blades. The twin blades of your Honda will pulverize the grass clippings, resulting in a finer mulch. The finer the mulch, the faster it will decompose, thereby returning nutrients to the soil quicker.

One area I had to hand water so I might not have been diligent enough. It's about 10 by 10 feet. The other few areas aren't bigger than 6 square feet. Another great video Pete. Couple questions. I'm transitioning to TTTF by overseeding into into my KBG. Going good so far. I live in Montana and used to mow fairly short before the snow flies. We have full snow coverage all winter. Still keep the TTTF around 4 or cut it shorter like I did the KBG? Also since I'm overseeding, the current grass is getting pretty tall but the new grass has just germinated. Can I lightly mow or is it better to wait as long as I can? Thanks much!

    Hi Pete, 13 days ago I power raked, aerated, over seeded, and threw down some Lesco starter fert on my tall fescue lawn. I used a high-quality blue lable tri-blend fescue seed and the germination and growth is great, but it's not near the 4" mowing height yet, maybe it's at 1.5-2". My existing turf is pushing 6 inches. Am I fairly safe to push mow the lawn? The seed was pricey so I hate to mess it up by mowing too early. Thanks!

    Do you recommend cutting at 4" going into winter even up north? We get a lot more snow then you and with a foot or more of snow on the lawn for extended periods will that hurt it if it's left tall?
    In PA we can either have nothing or a few feet it's hit or miss.

      Brian Smith man I just got an email from Australia about snow mold. I leave my grass at 4 inches all winter. I wouldn't know what to tell you because I've never even seen snow mold. What is it??? Fungus???

    • @BrianSmith-ex1eg
      @BrianSmith-ex1eg 7 лет назад

      GCI Turf Services not sure if it's fungus but I got it bad 2 years ago. Killed off a lot of the new grass I planted. That's why I make sure to overseed now and not later in October like a lot of folks around here do.
      I've been told to shorten up to around 3 or a tad less over winter to keep it from "laying over" under snow weight...supposed to help prevent issues.

    • @robwright3064
      @robwright3064 7 лет назад +1

      I live in Northern Indiana and have had snow mold. I was also told to cut it shorter before winter. The longer the grass the harder it is to breather during the winter. Allowing the turf to breathe easier will help it recover from snow mold. I had it bad a few years ago. I raked the areas that had it to loosen up the grass to help it breathe. It took a little while longer than other areas to recover from winter, but it eventually did. It's like a fungus with a mild pink tint.

    I cut my new grass (complete new Reno) at 3 weeks when it reached 4 inches. The push mower wheel marks are still laying down the new grass after a few days now. Should I be worried? What can I do?

    • @GCITurf
      @GCITurf  7 лет назад

      Tatersalad NC nah. It's gonna do that. Just each time you mow be sure and cut it in a different direction so the tire tracks aren't in the same spot each time. Answer these 3 questions
      -Do you have irrigation?
      -how long ago did you plant seed?
      -did you fertilize when you seeded?

      New grass is at 3" (overseeded). Will go back and fill in spots once temps drop back down to 70s. (Mooresville)

    • @GCITurf
      @GCITurf  7 лет назад

      Jess Stanley if you're at 3" then you can back off. I'd try and give the lawn 1 inch of water per week now. Until freezing temps. Remember keep rainfall in consideration

    Gci turf, I'm up north and I get lots of snow and want to keep my lawn at 4 inches do you think I can get snow mold by keeping it that short?

    • @GCITurf
      @GCITurf  7 лет назад

      I think most of the "residential" style mowers just will not cut that high. Sorry man....I do not know the first thing about now mold.

  • @Sara-L
    @Sara-L 7 лет назад

    We had some seeding at the place I work - I do the mowing there - I put off mowing until the grass grew in pretty good. My reasoning is I didn't want the soil to be disturbed until the root system could take hold.
    I let it grow a little longer than 6 inches. Big mistake, bogged down my little mower as it was thick, wet St. Augustine. The mower couldn't mulch it up at first. Took mowing every three days for it to get under control. I prefer cutting dry grass, but with this..well. We could have dry weather for a week and it would still be wet.
    I've seen contractors around town that will scalp the lawn down to 1-1.5 inches every cut. It's still green but you can't even see any grass blades anymore - it looks like it's mostly clover now.

      Grassology4610 you may. Why would the height of cut matter????

  • @chaddonschaddons7084
    @chaddonschaddons7084 3 года назад

    I'm sorry but I have to disagree with this person. Although I didn't hear him answer the question 'when to mow newly seeded lawn', I have an answer that depends on two things. What kind of grass and what kind of mower. The first depends on the grass species because if you are using for example turf type tall fescue then wait till 5 inches generally. If you have bermuda then wait till about 2.5 inches. And then there are a dozen of different species between them.
    The second question has to do with the mower type. If you are using a rotary mower you don't want to mow too early as you will vacuum up the weakly rooted new grass. They can't grip the ground yet so your vacuum will just pull them from the roots so you must wait long enough for them to have developed roots holding them down, so for this refer to the first question regarding the type of grass. If you are using a reel mower you still cant mow too early either because although it acts like a scissors which doesn't vacuum them up, there is regardless a small amount of pulling action that happens as you push the reel mower forward. Think of it as using a scissors on a piece of paper that while you are cutting the paper you are meanwhile pulling the scissors to the right or left while cutting forward. You will tear the paper. So using a reel mower is certainly better for cutting earlier than the rotary mower, there is still a little bit of time you have to wait as well.

    1) no but I'm giving 1" per week
    2) seeded 3 weeks ago
    3) provided starter fert heavy 1.5N/1000

    • @GCITurf
      @GCITurf  7 лет назад

      Tatersalad NC good rule of thumb. Never feed more that 1lb/1000 at a time. Wait 2-3 weeks then feed it another 1lb/1000. All quick release. The grass will begin to stand up better as it matures

    • @TS-zo3uj
      @TS-zo3uj 7 лет назад

      GCI Turf Services this might be a good video idea. So my questions are how do you tell when I fertilizer is quick release or slow? And when do I need to be using either or?

    Gci turf, I can't believe they don't listen to you and cut at 4 inches well I guess as long as they are paying it doesn't matter to you so sad. I see people in my development pay for fertilizer program and cut and my yard looks better and I do it myself.
